Steve by far is the most influential drummer on me and my style. He inspires me to grow in the craft. Thanks Steve for sharing your musical journey. Appreciate all of the interviews of these great drummers John.

I met Steve Smith in San Jose CA at a softball charity ball game in 1983 before going to the Day of the Green concert in Oakland CA. I have those old photos, I was on my 2nd year of college & was on summer leave. You & Ross Valery were sweethearts! You came out & greeted the fans as I watched from a distance & took some pictures. I also met Greg Rolie back in Tracy, CA at the Bean Festival around 2002 he was a living doll, a sweetheart & not a snob! You were yourself & I saw no greed or wants from you! All this talk about Neal Schon wanting to do a 50th anniversary get together but he's asking for some miracle & that man doesn't want to rest or just go on! He's asking to part the Red Sea, figure of speech! Keep looking young like Greg Rolie looks terrific for his age.

I love the look on Steve's face when John asks him about him playing Paiste in the late 70's "not this again"!

I have a friend that made a red snare or kit for Steve. I don't know if it was in the 80's or 90's though. His name is Doug.

Steve was playing with Ronnie Montrose who was opening for Journey in 1978 in Norfolk Virginia at the Scope Arena and Bruce Hornsby, before fame, was playing in the Holiday Inn Scope lounge. After their gig Steve came into the lounge with Greg Rollie then of Journey and sat in with Bruce on Seven Steps To Heaven. Definitely a cool night. I often wonder if Steve later ever put together who Bruce Hornsby had become.
