Finch Nest Parasitized by Cowbird!

  • This nest was built by a house finch. The mother finch laid 5 eggs. A cowbird laid a 6th egg. Cowbirds are a type of bird that lays its eggs in other nests and does not raise its own. This is known as brood parasitism. The finch mother does not realize that there is an imposter egg in its nest. She will brood and raise the cowbird as if it was her own chick. This video shows the nest with the cowbird egg in it and the cowbirds first few hours. Cowbirds hatch in 10-12 days whereas finch chicks hatch in 13-14 days. This gives the cowbird an advantage as it will be bigger than the rest of the chicks. Stay tuned for more videos of the finch nest!
    Another well known parasite bird is the cuckoo.

    I heard that cowbirds don't do too well in house finch nests, as the house finch chicks are fed seeds while the cowbird chicks need insects to survive.

      That’s exactly what happened here. I was surprised how well it was doing up till this point just being fed mainly seeds.

    This is really cool. According to wikipedia though, finches feed their young a vegetarian diet so the cowbirds that end up in a finch's nest often don't meet their nutritional requirements there and don't make it. I hope this is was an exception. Imagine being born an obligate parasite, lol

      The father bird was passing on the food he got - to the mother bird - so she could feed the chick later. He flies back to get more food.

    The fact that the mother didn’t totally remove the cowbird egg shell is suspicious that the parent birds do in fact know this isn’t their offspring and know it will die. Leaving the mostly intact cowbird egg shell maybe enough to trick the cowbird mother into believing it wasn’t found out.

    • @NaturalWorld253
      @NaturalWorld253 3 місяці тому

      @@yamato6114in actuality the cowbird doesn’t remember what nests they have eggs in. But a cowbird will be less likely to predate a nest that has a cowbird chick in it.

      Even if he did, the original cowbird mother would come back and destroy the nest and all remaining eggs. They watch from afar to ensure their young survives and is being fed. If not, they return for revenge. It's crazy!

      It did die, choked on seed. Then the cow mom tossed the remaining eggs in revenge . You can find the vids on the channel.

      it’s not our job to play god with the animals same way as god doesn’t interfere with our lives every time something evil happens. you could argue the morality, sure, of standing by and watching something happen that was preventable. but that’s not the purpose of this channel. the purpose is to show what nature is really like WITHOUT the interference of man. and this is it bud.

      There is no need to remove the cowbird egg, they can not survive in a house finch nest and will die a day or two after hatching. In actuality it would likely be more humane to remove the cowbird egg instead of making it have to suffer slowly suffocating over a couple days.
