4:20 - Rick, you now own an Andy Summers played Telecaster. Congrats!
I could listen to Andy reminisce for a whole day without a break
Rick…..here in the U.K…you are the “Musicians Musician” when it comes to your style of interviewing all these greats. Intelligent questions and a relaxed air. Keep it up mate……don’t sell-out….the current format is perfect.
Andy Summers is one of the greatest guitarists ever, his timing is impeccable, when Andy and Stewart Copeland played they were solid. His solo stuff is amazing.
Most certainly! I always enjoyed his tasty playing style in whatever the context was.
Yep, Sting, regardless of his musical pedigree now, would have remained a high school teacher if he never hooked up with those other two. His solo records are mundane compared to the raw material the Police produced. I recall he did redid a Police track, the way he had ''originally wanted to record it.. and the nicest thing I can say about it was that it is vomit inducing.
@@user-kv1lp8ih8g Aye, I always found Andy and Stewart as the engine of the police.
Stewart says Andy is a genius and that he never got credit for most of his playing
@@user-kv1lp8ih8g Sting was the one who provided the material, sang the songs and made them what they were......not decrying Stewart and Copeland - undoubtedly great musicians - but this was Sting's band in all but name, whether you like him or not....
It would be great to have something like this with Eric Clapton, I’m sure you could do it Rick!
Eric Clapton is a crashing bore. No. Keep Crapton away.
You know what’s next… Rick, you have to interview Eric and see if he still has it
Is Clapton allowed to talk about his experience yet, on UA-cam? Not sure they let you stay monetized and talk about negative effects of the rhymes-with-sax. They could probably do a spaces thing on “X”.
I believe Slowhand is like a fine wine. He had the energy and the excitement of his youth with the Bluesbreakers and Cream but his songwriting and singing has taken a new meaning after all his life experiences. I agree those two bands were his best period but he is one of the most influential musicians of the 20th and 21st centuries. I adore Slowhand; you have to 🎸🥰
There’s nothing wrong with Clapton’s guitar playing at any stage of his career.
@@jimmycampbell78you do know after the vax he wasn't able to play popperly for a while?
@@jimmycampbell78 r u sure? He was a beast in the Dominos era but because he was drunknin the 70s he lost it.he regained his muse in the 80s with Phil Collins.check Juan Les Pines 1986 live
We're dying to see Eric Clapton interviewed by you, Rick!
Andy is 81 and 3 years older than Eric. I never would have guessed that!
It is strange when you consider that Eric was a legend in the early 60s.
Great stories! Andy looks like a very humble, down to earth guy....❤
All these great stories and much more are in Andy's book, "One Train Later". An excellent read along with Sting's "Broken Music". Two of my favorite music books of all time. Man, can the English write well! If you love the Police, both books are a must read.
Great sense of humor and storyteller. Love it?
Man, what a fantastic conversation! Love Andy even more! Brilliant solo work. Thank you, Andy & Rick!
Two of my favorite guitarists! Summers and Clapton
Brother!
The best thing about your second channel is that it reminds me to go back and watch the interviews I may have missed on your primary channel.
Hey Rick. Just subscribed to your channel. Keep doing what you're doing. As a musician myself I really enjoy it. Peace.
Rick, you are one of my favorite interviewers. When you talk to musicians I learn so much. (I have zero musical ability, but I appreciated music). You respect the musician, but you're not overwhelmed by any of them. You are their peer, so you can ask these questions and they open up freely. Bravo, Rick.
Simply amazing Rick...Thank you!
Saw Andy live 4 months ago, one of the best experiences of my life
What a great story. Andy is a cool guy.
This and the original interview are great!
Thank you ❤. The algorithms landed me here. I subscribed as I’m subscribed to your other channel. Brilliant interview.
Two excellent guitarists
Andy Is incredible
Sub'd! When Zoot Money had a reunion performance of his band, Andy couldn't make it and I was asked to take his place . . a real honour!
Very, very cool!
An amazing experience, as the band was great, and Zoot Money was delightful. To add to the story, I played a solo in one number and Zoot asked me to keep going. After the gig, the sax player said he had never done that before with Andy! One of the highlights of my career!
@@uniqdzign2WOW! Hold your head up high!! Something really BIG and I am sure it was extremely well deserved. Never, ever forget that, kind Sir! Very Cool!
Wow! Great story! Great experience! Great memory!
@@clarkelavelle7303 Thank you so much, yes now at 74, it's those things that count!
Rick just subscribed! Didn’t know about this channel 😊
Nice! And great to hear of those early London days of the rising British guitar guys getting together, swapping tales, venues, and guitars!
Eric Clapton is incredible
Eric Clapton is God ! ( look it up , if you don't know about some graffiti on a wall in England )
No. He stinks. He is the most vanilla player ever. Dude can't write a song to save his life. Couldn't even write a song about his own son without a co-writer. "Forever Man" Are you serious? Wow. What a tour de force of the blues lineage.
Very interesting and entertaining interview!
I remember his Zoot Money days with great fondness at the Flamingo Club, they were hot brilliant nights
Andy! love this guy!
gracias señor beato
I wasn't aware of the second channel...subscribed.
Subscribed. Rick, you’re the coolest. And I say that to myself every time I look into the mirror “Rick, YOU are thee coolest”
Wonderful story!
Andy's autobiography is amazing- he has an incredible memory for detail. No personal childhood sob stories, just rock raconteuring ( if that's a word). He tells of buying a 335 as a teenager, leaning it against a tree for 2 mins and getting it nicked😢
I love Country Preacher by Cannonball Adderley. He was only 46 when he died in 1975. I recommend him to you.
Watch Andy playing at the Montreal Jazz Festival back in 1991. The Police are just a small piece of how well rounded a musician he is. Super talented and underrated!
It's just funny that he is the same age as Paul Mccartney. However, when I think of The Beatles I think 60's and when I think The Police I think 80's.
Riveting. Thank you.
I saw the Police on their first tour of America in 1978 in a small club, unbelievable. They were on the local radio station during the day and the DJ asked Sting why they called the band ''The Police'' and his response was ''every time someone sees a cop car we get free publicity'''.
Andy Summers has similar speaking mannerisms to me as Tony Banks of Genesis. When he talks to you, he kinds of mumbles to himself trying to recall these events. It's very funny. I wonder if they're from the same area of England and if it's a dialect thing.
I think it's an English thing! As we gather our thoughts!
Funny thing is, if andy would’ve bought that second les paul maybe eric would have used something different to record the bluesbreakers album, and those 59 les pauls would not be so valuable today as they are. Clapton gave those particular year and model guitars the meaning and the mystique they have currently just with that record.
I love that his Jazz heroes also are mine. Grant Green!!
I love GG!!!
Grant is my favorite jazz guitarist!
First time I've ever clicked the notification bell and thats only because you got Andy. Sorry Sting.
Andy looking pretty good for eighty! The Flamingo must have been a great training ground with all those talents interacting.
I'm subscribed to BOTH...because you're Rick Beato 👍
So did I!!!
Rick, is that a Tivoli radio on the table behind Andy?
I can relate, Andy. I sold an ANCIENT (in 1975) 345 cheap to a friend because there was a short somewhere and it was beyond my 20 year old brain, it was just broken to me. Get one that works.
OK Rick, now you need to invite one of the best drummers ever... you know, Mr Copeland!!! regards from Costa Rica
he is one man Andy humble dry sense of humour very funny man you could chat to for ever he gave to Sting And the police what Mick Ronson gave to Bowie, all the best rick ,Tim
Rick, your advert for the channel needs subtly changing. You say , "Better guests", That's not a nice thing for previous guests to hear. :)
Fair enough, then again, Andy would probably laugh his balls off when he hears that one 😊
You need to tell people on the main channel about “2”. A Beato subscriber for years, I was not aware of the second channel.
Andy has rubbed shoulders with everyone, even the Beatles!
Great memory/recall for his age. Probably avoided the drink and drugs or , at least, kept it to a minimum
“Fuckin ‘ell, it’s great! WHAAAT? Oh”
😂😂😂
I think Andy was one of the first musicians Hendrix met when he first landed in London at the end of '66.
I seem to recall a story about Jimi getting a guitar from someone in the Zoot Money crew, that would be Andy.
The guy who stole Eric's guitar probably waiting for Eric to die before he could put that guitar to auction. After so many decades i think it's not yet been found. Eric's children should be vigilant about that to get that back and put it in its proper place, if they're planning to build a museum for their dad, that's the absolute place for it.
One time Joe Bonamassa said it was in a private collection that he knew about, but then he kind of retracted it so who knows?
JUST SUBSCRIBED
Blimey can't believe Andy is 81, he looks about 60 .
T’was between him and Ronnie for the Stones gig, workout for them both in the end.

Everybody go and check out his phenomenal playing on Jon Lord's "Sarabande" Album! ❤️
It’s amazing that the GUITAR which changad the sound of rock is missing
gold
£200 quid in 1965/66 would be the equivalent of about £5000 quid today! the average wage was about £10-£14 quid a week
I was buying a Gold Top Les Paul De Luxe back in '72 on HP (credit). Price was £240.00. Damn fool that I was, a romantic distraction made me leave his band, and let him take over the payments! How I've kicked myself ever since! It played like a dream!
Imagine hanging out with so many famous cats as a kid/young adult you forget when you met The Beatles hahaha. Great stories
Proper Serious Musician Is Andy Summers, can you Imagine what London was like for Music back then in the 60s-70s , it’s nothing like that now, Killed the music scene there Heartbreaking 💔💔💔very sad
The Les Paul is now with Albert Lee: see 3min55sec video
“Albert Lee Remembers Amp Battles with Eric Clapton-Plus His Free Les Paul Custom"
Although 200 pounds was about 4800-5000 pounds of today, back then neither Clapton not Andy were world known, acclaimed, multimillionaire musicians, just struggling, hardworking musicians (although Clapton was a minor sensation in the area) and those kind of instruments were kinda hard to find but not extremely overpriced, overvalued and overhyped like they are today so it's only fair to adjust their price to inflation to give us an idea of how much they costed.
Wonderful story, but please please, let's find out of a guitar player named Stewart Barnes, from yorkshire England, he was around in those days with beck clapton lee and menny more, he played with buddy Emmons, carel perkins., Carel perkins gives his guitar to Stewart Barnes, he was impressed by Stewart his playing, you find info about this in weekend magazine, som we're the 70 tis, menny fases of Wembley, Stewart passed away, but please find him on your UA-cam, love to you all
The Beatles
Interesting how Andy says you’d never see the four of them at once by the time he was performing regularly
whereas Mick Jagger said they in the early days they were never to be seen without each other
I believe he said you wouldn't see all four of them walking down the street together.
Not a fan of Rick Beato but Andy Summers is a British legend.
The mic'd amp, just in back of their seated positions. What make please ?
Six degrees of Andy Summers...
Was he on the one zoot money hit in the uk , big time operator.
What I wanna know is which of the 2 Les Pauls did Eric use on the Beano album? Was it Andy’s? 😳
No. Andy's Les Paul was used on "Fresh Cream".
♥️
When are you interviewing the GOAT?
Rick, get Clapton while we still have him! Shame Gary Moore is no longer with us... That would also be a hot interview / jam
First guy Hendrix met and played in front of.
The way I see it is that Clapton shafted him and then mocked him as he was leaving after the deal. I think that is what still rankles with him.
I’m 52 and look 81! 😪
Much more interesting is Larry Coryell”s mentorship of Andy.
REALLY now ???
Larry Coryell spent a lot of time at Electric Ladyland while Hendrix was there.
@@parallaxcontinuum7898 Yes.He went on to reveal that going out on tour with his American colleague & jazz virtuoso Larry Coryell helped to break his inertia.
” Larry is a very enthusiastic person and actually, he was a catalyst - he brought me back to it. And I’ve, you know, played and toured with Larry, I started playing all the time again, and it’s never gone away again.”
Jack Bruce had Larry as his "new Clapton" in Feb.70. They were STELLAR.The same evening Jack invited Leslie West & Pappalardi ( Mountain ). to join the tour as the opener, replacing The Kinks. Each band was flawless. The rest is history.@@leoosiku
andy was so good with the police ! but later he should never do jazz fusion ! lol ! ok he won a lot of money with police and he can do all that he wants ! but andy was not a soloist its a real fact ! but the guitar part on message in the bottle (a sting song ) was sooooo great ! and still great !
That Les Paul though. 🤤
Would be amazing to see John frusciante on this channel ✨
Rick, great interview. Loved the Clapton story.......Hey Andy wanna sell that Tele?
U earned a sub there, sorry, its just a lazy daze im always in.....anyway, andy is such a legend.
What did Andy say Eric Clapton say in the Studio that carried over the PA into the foyer of the studio? Darn, I played it over and over but can't catch it. Does anyone here know? I usually can understand English accents with no problem but it's just the way Andy retold it, LOL!
Eric says ‘Fucking hell…it’s great…’
@@dodgydave9651 Thank You!
Has Eric Clapton talked about Andy? Can't seem to find anything.
😊
Has ANY musician Rick interviewed NOT been referred to as being in “ one of the greatest (insert music style here) ever!”? How many “greatest” of a genre can you have?
I want to hear a story from some player of fame and talent about their friendship with a bus driver or a concreter ...
Should have gone to Macaris
Rock Rick?
The Police were big in the 80s, but there was no "Beatles of the 19__'s" No one matched their popularity in any decade
Actually you are wrong. The Beatles were good, but others have matched or surpassed their popularity, Elvis, Michael Jackson, yes in the early to mid 80s the police really were thst big
@@marcpaola1371 - The Beatles are the #1 selling group.... of ALL.... TIME. So no, no one has matched or surpassed their popularity. Not then, and they damn sure didn't retain popularity through the decades like the Beatles. Beatlemania is STILL a thing. Perhaps you are getting confused because Michael Jackson had the single highest selling ALBUM of all time (thriller) but overall the Beatles have sold hundreds of millions more albums than Jackson. And no, the Police, who I was a fan of in the 80s ever since my camp counselor Dallas turned me onto them in 80 when I was 11 during summer camp, were nowhere near Beatles status. Super popular, yes. But the Beatles were on another level and it's measurable beyond opinion. This, in spite of the fact that there was less people around in the Beatles prime (less potential customers) and a less sophisticated radio / tv network to promote the bands.
"We were the Beatles of the 80's" ??? Whoa, calm down there Andy...
What would’ve happened if Clapton never bought that Les Paul? Never created the so-called Beano tone?
Never played a Les Paul? Would all the Les Paul mania ever happen?
