Rick…..here in the U.K…you are the “Musicians Musician” when it comes to your style of interviewing all these greats. Intelligent questions and a relaxed air. Keep it up mate……don’t sell-out….the current format is perfect.
Andy Summers is one of the greatest guitarists ever, his timing is impeccable, when Andy and Stewart Copeland played they were solid. His solo stuff is amazing.
Yep, Sting, regardless of his musical pedigree now, would have remained a high school teacher if he never hooked up with those other two. His solo records are mundane compared to the raw material the Police produced. I recall he did redid a Police track, the way he had ''originally wanted to record it.. and the nicest thing I can say about it was that it is vomit inducing.
@@PhilMcCrackin-f3n Sting was the one who provided the material, sang the songs and made them what they were......not decrying Stewart and Copeland - undoubtedly great musicians - but this was Sting's band in all but name, whether you like him or not....
Rick, you are one of my favorite interviewers. When you talk to musicians I learn so much. (I have zero musical ability, but I appreciated music). You respect the musician, but you're not overwhelmed by any of them. You are their peer, so you can ask these questions and they open up freely. Bravo, Rick.
Andy's transition from jazz to rock has given him a certain musical sensibility that is geared more towards taste and minimalism instead of flash and volume. His guitar playing makes the Police's sound one of a kind..his tones are pristine and delicate. He is truly one of the best. As for Eric, well, one of the first guitar heroes. Love them both.
All these great stories and much more are in Andy's book, "One Train Later". An excellent read along with Sting's "Broken Music". Two of my favorite music books of all time. Man, can the English write well! If you love the Police, both books are a must read.
Is Clapton allowed to talk about his experience yet, on UA-cam? Not sure they let you stay monetized and talk about negative effects of the rhymes-with-sax. They could probably do a spaces thing on “X”.
I believe Slowhand is like a fine wine. He had the energy and the excitement of his youth with the Bluesbreakers and Cream but his songwriting and singing has taken a new meaning after all his life experiences. I agree those two bands were his best period but he is one of the most influential musicians of the 20th and 21st centuries. I adore Slowhand; you have to 🎸🥰

An amazing experience, as the band was great, and Zoot Money was delightful. To add to the story, I played a solo in one number and Zoot asked me to keep going. After the gig, the sax player said he had never done that before with Andy! One of the highlights of my career!

Watch Andy playing at the Montreal Jazz Festival back in 1991. The Police are just a small piece of how well rounded a musician he is. Super talented and underrated!
Funny thing is, if andy would’ve bought that second les paul maybe eric would have used something different to record the bluesbreakers album, and those 59 les pauls would not be so valuable today as they are. Clapton gave those particular year and model guitars the meaning and the mystique they have currently just with that record.
Andy Summers has similar speaking mannerisms to me as Tony Banks of Genesis. When he talks to you, he kinds of mumbles to himself trying to recall these events. It's very funny. I wonder if they're from the same area of England and if it's a dialect thing.
I saw the Police on their first tour of America in 1978 in a small club, unbelievable. They were on the local radio station during the day and the DJ asked Sting why they called the band ''The Police'' and his response was ''every time someone sees a cop car we get free publicity'''.
I can relate, Andy. I sold an ANCIENT (in 1975) 345 cheap to a friend because there was a short somewhere and it was beyond my 20 year old brain, it was just broken to me. Get one that works.
I was buying a Gold Top Les Paul De Luxe back in '72 on HP (credit). Price was £240.00. Damn fool that I was, a romantic distraction made me leave his band, and let him take over the payments! How I've kicked myself ever since! It played like a dream!

I think Andy was one of the first musicians Hendrix met when he first landed in London at the end of '66. I seem to recall a story about Jimi getting a guitar from someone in the Zoot Money crew, that would be Andy.
The guy who stole Eric's guitar probably waiting for Eric to die before he could put that guitar to auction. After so many decades i think it's not yet been found. Eric's children should be vigilant about that to get that back and put it in its proper place, if they're planning to build a museum for their dad, that's the absolute place for it.
The "thief" to thought that commentary about the guitar would die down after a while. Or that Eric would not survive his addiction(s) and relapse(s). Speaking of "survive", Eric tragically has already lost a child.. . * ("Debbie Downer music" plays) *
Although 200 pounds was about 4800-5000 pounds of today, back then neither Clapton not Andy were world known, acclaimed, multimillionaire musicians, just struggling, hardworking musicians (although Clapton was a minor sensation in the area) and those kind of instruments were kinda hard to find but not extremely overpriced, overvalued and overhyped like they are today so it's only fair to adjust their price to inflation to give us an idea of how much they costed.

There was the original Beano burst, the summers burst, a dark burst, I believe another in there somewhere plus the one he has now.
