    When I die
    bury me deep
    Place two speakers
    At my feet

    On my head

After a brief sojourn to other artists and genres I was wrestled back to my roots thanks to a local bar that has booked GD cover bands. It went by a few weeks ago and was reaffirmed and renewed. Reaffirmed by the wonderfully kind and spiritual fans who came out to enjoy community, friendship, and the music. I didn't realize how much I missed the uncomplicated, loving and unassuming nature of the people who miss live music in general and the Grateful Dead in particular. I reconnected with old friends, met new one and discovered 'closet' fans I would have never expected. As always, no shortage of surprises among a generous crowd. It saved me from myself.

This was my first Grateful Dead show. I was 17 years old, and had just graduated high school the month prior. The thing about the Dead is that the shows were all special, but they were a continuous event. Like an old friend, the conversation never ends, they were always there. Seeing other bands was a "special event." Seeing the Dead was just having a good time and seeing the Dead. I saw the Who 2 days after seeing the Dead twice, both times the Who seemed like a bigger deal, but the Dead shows were more fun, by a lot. Hard concept to explain, but I bet many of you get it.

The era in which the GD broke into mainstream consciousness with their only chart topping hit. The accompanying Touch Of Grey music video is an absolute classic! I still remember it rotating on MTV like non-stop around this time. Friends who didn't know them wanted get to know them because of that video. Their resulting plunge into GD music was like a bottomless wellspring of good vibes, good times, and moments of spiritual enlightenment as the rest was, as they say, history ;) What a long strange trip it's been !! And we're ALL still on the ride!!

I'll never forget that evening when they asked us to come back in for that taping it was so crazy fun with Bill the drummer telling off the wall jokes as we all partied it up!

2:21:35 This Black Peter is one of the best I've seen or heard. Jerry gives such a powerful performance and you can see he's lived those words he sings.

What was great about that Black Peter is there was a dude in the back of the stadium where I was sitting. After every song from the beginning of the show he screamed BLACK PETER!!!!! He never missed a beat with any break in the action. BLACK PETER!!!!! When they played it the whole back half of the stadium went nuts. It felt like one gigantic family and we were all the same wave length with the band.
