Brilliant stuff Richard! I don't envy you with trying to keep multiple tracks across two different levels aligned at the baseboard joints - I have enough trouble with my single line layout 😅
in this episode Richard says that he hopes that packing and gluing and ballasting will hold the rails firm on the curves without pinning down. In my layout in the garden shed we suffered with geographic tectonic shift.. The contraction and expansion of the rails with hot summers and cold winters combined with the slight swelling of the modular board base resulted in some serious land movement on my gradual station entrance curves. The lesson i take away is pinning the rail is as essential as the use of marine ply sub bases. Less is more.+ but but with five layers to rehouse I'm now busy building a bigger 18x10 shed to take the radius 4 and 5 curves. Thank you Richard; if you can do it then we can all do it. Great video series.
You look so relaxed in your chair with Lulu Richard 😆I hear you on the continual improvements layouts can be a major headache but worth it in the end. I've re-decorated my layout room after dismantling my previous one (no real play value) got a bigger 12 x 8 N Gauge with a junction and a loop which looks like New Mills Junction unintentionally, I may put a small stabling point but not sure yet really want to bring scenery into play, will upload a small video soon. Keep up the good work Richard, you are always a great view and congrats on the new job!
Hi Richard, thanks for the update and good luck in your new job. I have just ordered a 37 and 55 from Accurascale to run around my single line layout … under the sofa and round the back of the bookcase !!! All the best !!!

You took on a difficult build with this layout and you re finding the little snags that have to be overcome but there's no sign of fatigue in you as yet. The close running by the station platform is amazing. For me that was the highlight in this video. All the best at Accurascale. David.
Always love seeing these updates! I wasn't sold on the station idea previously, but you've done a good job there incorporating it. Also, that banking out of the tunnel is so much better now! If you can get the other lines running like that you're onto a winner.
Fantastic update Richard. Good to hear you have sorted out the running issues! that's something I should of done before doing the scenery on my layout. I like the new station too it's going to look great once finished. - Nicholas.

Great video as always Richard. The layout is certainly getting along now and looks good with the station now added, just imagine azumas flying through there! Take care James
Hi Richard, Looking good🙂I have a suggestion for the track joints for your super elevated section. 1st step. Try and give the track a natural curve over the joint so when cut it doesn't spring back straight. 2nd step. When happy with the curve and super elevation use araldite to hold the track in place over the joint making sure it comes up to base of the track and add ballast once happy and press it into the araldite, leave the araldite to cure overnight. 3rd step. Once the araldite has cured carefully cut through the track and araldite at the joint. I have used this method with great success. For extra strength use a brass pin with the top filed flat, I knock these in below the track and solder to them. Regards, David.
Wondered where you'd got to. Can see now! You have been busy. That cement rake looks great behind the 37. Looking forward to seeing the scenery develop. Congrats on the new job too.

Great video. I always stick to the golden rule....get the track and points working and ballasted before starting the scenics. I am just entering year 7 of my exhibition rewire and upgrade of my exhibition layout. When you get into your 70s it gets harder especially when it all has to be done one handed due to arthritis 😿. Keep up the good work.
Great update on the layout here Richard, nice to se that you have decided to put a station onto this layout, all layouts should have some form of station on them to be honest, good to see some trains finally running regardless of them all being on the same loop on the mainline at the moment, some nice additions there especially the accurascale class 37, I hope you enjoy it, I myself will be looking into one of the new tool bachmann ones personally as they have done some that I really like the look of, keep up the great work.
Really nice Richard and looking forward to seeing the garden layout too, you’ve got a dream job now bud ,I have a class 89 on order ,wish you well mate all the best Mark 😊😊
very interesting im currently working on the Manchester International layout in 00 and it is progressing with lots of electrical dropper wires going in and a complex junction box for the master and slave control panels as well as making the layout operationally interesting.
I am looking forward to you starting the scenery Richard. I posted a video of someone from my club pulling 54 of those Accurascale cement wagons with a class 58
Great modelling, however I'm surprised that you've not modelled Hadley Wood considering the tunnel is said location. With the heritage line you had options for station and running, plus you could have added a section for a small goods siding/yard. This would give you the best of both worlds, mainline running, stopping on the mainline and an option for shunting to keep the punters interested. Looking forward to seeing more videos
Great work as always Richard. Just one "fingers down the blackboard" moment. You're not "embanking" the track, you're simply banking it ! Regardless of my nit - picking, I'm looking forward to seeing the finished article.
looking good. Im building a layout themed on scotland, (or at least it will be), and have gone for a single track setup on an L-shaped board with one long loop, and a shorter loop with the station up against the backscene. I will be watching your progress for ideas
@@NewJunction i update weekends. Sometimes big updates, sometimes short 5 min ones. But its only just started. I have the back scenes to add yet, then the scenics and point drives
Layout looking good and would like to see what your going to do around the tunnel area as I'm building a layout and getting to that stage also. a change of job is like a holiday or so people say 😉
Great update - good to see it evovle and develop. With space issues on the mainline station, why not go for "slow lines only" platforms (like Sandy or Arlesley) which then would allow a curve platform and nice fast running shots of the 91s etc speeding through? Also gives some play value in that you can have trains coming off the ML onto the SL for stopping.... The heritage line side can then have an overbridge from the ML station and stairs down to the lower level island platform for the heritage line, kind of a LNER meet GCR "New Junction" :) That banking looks tight on the tunnel portals!
You could have a central island platform as per the GCR so you only need to move one line out a bit to give room in between the lines of the heritage railway
Hi Richard! 🙂 Well it seems that Operation Interchange is now well under way! 🎉 🎊 In terms of the building, I’d be tempted to treat the mainline station as a ‘modern image’ rebuild sometime between the 1970s-80s that has had a subsequent ‘tarting up’ of questionable success (like Stafford, Peterborough or, indeed, Thirsk!) and is a mere shadow of former glories. The heritage line could be accessed through either an adjoining bridge or an old subway (that is left over from the station in its former guise) which emerges from the retaining wall into a platform. This can either be the sole platform or have one on the other side accessible by a level crossing at the end of the station, which itself would make sense as this could carry the road access to the mainline station (via an under bridge) and a car park 🤔 Once again, I hope that all kind of makes sense…though I suspect after I sent you down this rabbit hole the last thing you want is another 🤷🏻♂️ If you want I’ll happily draw it again 😜 Lulu was clearly very at work thinking in her basket, so it is good that she got some much needed ‘down time’ in the garden 😄🖤 Cheers mate, always great so see an update 🍀👍🍻
@@NewJunction a siding on the heritage line next to its depot would be a neat spot to show off some various rolling stock, it has huge potential as a place to pop some more diorama type modelling of wagons and coaches in various states of decay/restoration as is often found. The stuff that we don't see modelled all that often but can result in quite intricate use of materials and weathering. Just a thought your layout your rules as always.
Hi Richard, Its great to see some trains running on what will I am sure be a super layout in future and pleased you do have a station on the main line as you say it gives some super film views for videos and pictures which I use a lot on my small layout and seeing how close your trains run to them I hope you will not be running Class 08 shunters through them as the connecting rods may well hit them as they did on mine and alterations were needed. I hope to see you again at GETS and as you now work for Accurascale will you be helping run any layouts this time? Keep well and I was surpriced to see the garden railway again as I thought you had moved away but it will be great to see work continue on it. Cheers Robert.
I was just thinking yesterday I haven't heard anything from new junction in a while. I hope to begin my n-gauge layout soon which is a fictional mainline with GNER & GWR modern stock wit a herritage and small goods depot near it
I do like the New Station :) thinking about the garage door end, could you use points (one in each direction for each loop) to connect up with the main lines that currently have to stop abruptly rather than, or as well as, an ABC ? I did a quick mock up in AnyRail that seems to fit - I could send if interested ? Dave.
Looks good Richard, but you should switch to N Gauge like me and have more realistic curve radii and effectively double the length of all your straights. 🙂
Wondered why you hadn’t been in any of the latest Hornby mag videos, you’ve moved on to Accurascale congratulations with the new job. I’d like to see the country scene develop with the heritage line.
On the heritage line I would go with one platform on the far side and keep the passing loop for operational value. The station building wouldn’t need to be that big so shouldn’t make the area look too built up. As you say you could add a bay platform/siding if there’s space to fit that in
I do think it would be best if you could find a way to have all 4 tracks of the main line operational as loops in garage mode. The heritage station could be integrated into the mainline station a little bit like Didcot?
Looking good Richard - I take it you checked the platform clearances with an 08 ? Always remember building my platforms - track nice and close then found the 08 with its outside frames couldn't pass through 😂. I'd start with the countryside scenery..... cheers Euan
@@NewJunction oh i didnt notice them passing thought there was only a single curve laid at the opposite end to the tunnels....thinking about the coach loading gauges as trains pass on that section.....
Hi Richard, I've twice tried to reply to your comment about having a link, but I can't see it posted. So Peco ref SL-E1095 & SL-E1096. Hattons are showing stock of both.
Strikes me that with a mainline station, the hertitage line would possibly look better with the station located on the "other side" of the layout, where you have the diesels parked, and then by the mainline station is, just have the heritage line meandering through the countryside.
Very impressive, you've certainly cracked on! I have two niggles though. To me the tunnels just don't look right. Looking straight on it appears the track almost does a right angle and the loco looks like to bearly misses the tunnel wall. Would it not have been better to bring the tunnels out more on to the straight track. That way the curve would have been hidden. One more thing. Why have you used wooden sleeper points on the concrete track? Concrete ones are available. Having said all that I look forward to seeing it at exhibitions. It's definitely a credit too you Richard.
The tunnel needs to be moved forward ever so slightly so hopfully that will help. Point wise you can't get code 75 concrete points and half the ones up norf are still wooden 😂
@New Junction I'm sure moving the tunnels will help. You could even stagger the entrances, eh think about that! 😃 As for wooden points, Bamfurlong junction opposite my house is all concrete trackwork. That must be the half that has them. 😃 Peco do them, Hattons have them in stock. Although for some reason Peco only so them in medium radius.
Is that dodgy baseboard joint around 3 minutes? The cement wagons bounce a little. I tend to solder the rails to screws at the baseboard joints. One thing I would definitely recommend is to replace the garage door with a roller door, I have done so and it has vastly improved the conditions making it far less draughty and more conducive to playing trains.
You are certainly a braver man than I with multiple baseboards on multiple levels. I am loving watching this layout go together and always look forward to the latest progress. Although this type of layout is not normally my sort of thing, hopefully one day I will catch it on the exhibition circuit, I love the imaginative thinking behind this layout creating something a little different.
Very nice. Makes me sad though. I spent quite a while over easter playing with Ashbrooke Central in my parents' loft, and now my girlfriend and her sister own our flat. However, we don't own the loft and can't use it, so I still have no space for a layout here...
Looks terrific Richard and look forward to seeing tge landscape in there with those long trains running through it

Sadly the scenery won't allow it
Great to see and hows your 2nd helper going must be about 12 months old
Shes two and now there's another haha 😅
As for wooden points, Bamfurlong junction opposite my house is all concrete trackwork. That must be the half that has them. 😃
Peco do them, Hattons have them in stock. Although for some reason Peco only so them in medium radius.
@@csxrensville5105 do you have a link?
Is that dodgy baseboard joint around 3 minutes? The cement wagons bounce a little. I tend to solder the rails to screws at the baseboard joints. One thing I would definitely recommend is to replace the garage door with a roller door, I have done so and it has vastly improved the conditions making it far less draughty and more conducive to playing trains.
Top tip and yes the baseboards move if I nudge them
You are certainly a braver man than I with multiple baseboards on multiple levels. I am loving watching this layout go together and always look forward to the latest progress. Although this type of layout is not normally my sort of thing, hopefully one day I will catch it on the exhibition circuit, I love the imaginative thinking behind this layout creating something a little different.
@@lswr53 pleased to hear its of interest, fingers crossed it makes it to an exhibition... you can have a go!
as for the Siphon G, the coupling gap looks a little large- nice model though
It comes with close fitting magnetic couplings too 😉
Very nice. Makes me sad though. I spent quite a while over easter playing with Ashbrooke Central in my parents' loft, and now my girlfriend and her sister own our flat. However, we don't own the loft and can't use it, so I still have no space for a layout here...
All good things come to those that wait
Great update Richard the platforms look amazing is there a link for the chap that helped to make them
Search PJM models 😊
