Isn’t there a “law” stating passengers cannot be held on a plane longer than 3 hours for domestic and 4 hours for overseas flights? Someone needs to contact a lawyer for clarification and possibly a lawsuit, if they haven’t already done so! What they went through was cruel and in my opinion unconscionable!

Delta - no excuse. Either get the plane back to the gate or get a stairway up to the plane and get them off. You deserve to be sued big time for this. Even if no one died there will be lots of heat related injuries.

  • @NeedtoSpeak

Let me get legalistic here. The airline was on a tarmac….not in the air. Not returning to the gate and disembarking was “false imprisonment”. Anyone in the criminal justice system knows that event is one to avoid at all costs. Second, this should constitute reckless endangerment charges against who ever denied disembarkation. Third….if there were children onboard, addition child protection laws were violated. Until passengers and the media aggressively pursue this through legislation and civil lawsuit….what has the airline to loose? Everyone of these passengers, and crew, need to begin a class action suit. There were real and severe consequences to this malfeasance by the airline.

We will be moving from the cruise terminal to a cargo terminal tonight around midnight and all remaining passengers onboard will not be allowed to leave the ship for the remainder of our stay in Kiel....also the port missed was Gothenburg, Sweden.

We live in Henderson, Nevada next door to Las Vegas, Nevada and Harry Reid International Airport and I feel for the passengers on that plane. It’s been unusually hot this summer. I’m not 100% sure why this aircraft was delayed so long, but I can tell you that when it gets above 110+ here ATC requires further distances between planes. Hot air is less dense, something like that. Love the channel.

I don’t think this is an isolated incident. DL seems to have mtce pblms with their 757 fleet. P.S. We just spent over 7 hours on a Delta flight from JFK to Atlanta. Yup...2 hour flight time, but 7 hours from boarding in JFK to deplaning at ATL. Boarded at 11 a.m. and sat on the runway for 2 1/2 hours before returning to the gate and waiting for another 2 hours. One passenger got confrontational and demanded to be let off. He voluntarily deplaned while we waited at the gate. Needless to say, this is how in-flight incidents start. Finally taxied back out and got into the air almost 5 hours late. OK, we got there safely, but c'mon...this is getting crazy. We didn't get off the plane until 6:15 p.m. Then connecting flight was delayed another 2 hours while they waited for those pilots to arrive on an inbound flight...chaos much? I will say the flight crews were professional and kept us informed. Remember, it isn't their idea to endure these delays. I'm sure this isn't any fun for flight crews either.

Which port in Switzerland did the Carnival Pride have to skip? You seem to be reporting more and more cruise ships going to Switzerland and I am curious of the route and which ports are becoming popular? Does it go to Zurichsee or Lake Lucerne? or all the way to the lake at Geneve?
Did they build and underground canal from Germany down to Switzerland? 🙂
AIS now reports that the ship was moved from the western side of port starting at 21:10 UTC (23:10 local time) to a cruise dock on eastern side of bay and it took about 1 hour to do the move. The skip first pulled out backwards of port for quite some distance and then forwards to the new dock. Don't have enough access to know if it moved under its own power or not.

I am a “young” senior citizen-the older I get, the less able I am able to tolerate heat. I can see the lawsuits against Delta piling up already. This was just a common sense thing-an hour had passed with no relief in sight-those people should have been taken off the plane. All of the southwest U.S. is sweltering under these temps. Planes do have A/C on the ground that can be run from the engines or the APU (aux power unit) in the tail. It could of been off to save fuel, or not working. A four hour delay on the tarmac with A/C on may use enough fuel to require refueling before takeoff. At the gate the plane is usually powered off, so would not have A/C, so the only A/C in that case may be piped in from the terminal.

Don, I am forced to tell you that you were wrong about the airplane and lack of a/c. Modern airliners have an Auxiliary Power Unit commonly referred to as the APC. The APC is a small jet engine located in the tail of the aircraft that provides power to the aircraft when there are no engines running. The APC provides lighting, a/c etc. The engines when running will provide the power to do the same. Why there was no a/c is a question to be asked of the flight crew. A/C should have been available either via the main engines or the APC.

On aircraft: On ground, the APU would be running on the tarmac and this provides air conditioning on plane. And if it weren't running, it would not allow aircraft to start it engines and flight would have been cancelled because not much use if the plane can't start its engines. If the APU was running but not able to keep up with heat, it would be different story, but the inside of aircraft would still be much cooler than outside of aircrtaft. And if people were really suffering, the pilots could have started one engine to provide much more air conditioning capability. (unless this is a 787 where air conditioning is traditional machines not related to aircraft).
In traditional bleed air system, the air from outside is pressurized as it passes through engine core and becomes very hot. Part of engine core air is then "bled" to high pressure ducts leading to fuselage. A heat exchanger inside airctraft pulls in unpressurized outside air to cool the pressurized very hot bleed air. When that bleed air is then expanded to cabin pressure, its temperature drops and due to much heat having been remove while compressed, the uncompressed version ends up much cooler than the air that was sucked in by engine. (or APU).
(Of you look at aircrtaft belly near wings, you will see a "trap door" that is usually open on ground with warning of very hot air coming out, and that is the air that was sucked in a bit forward on fuselage and passed through heat exchanger and dumped back to the outside. Varying the amount of cooling at that stage varies how much cooling is done and the "air cylcling" machine can also use that heat to heat the aircraft.
If the amout of cooling was inadequate, it might not have retained normal 20° temperature inside aircraft, but doubtfull it would have been deadly since it would have still provided much cooling.

The airlines need to do better in getting flights out on time and stop canceling flights and/or changing flights itineraries.

Quite a few years ago I was flying Delta from Aruba, after a cruise, to Miami. Of course it was super hot in Aruba. We boarded the full flight and taxied away from the gate. And stoped still. Turned out the control tower was in curaçao and they had gone to lunch!
The pilots turned the plane so the port side was to windward and opened the main door to let the breeze in. I remember thinking at any moment I was going to tear off my seatbelt and run screaming up the aisle in a panic. But, since nobody else did, I decided I could tough it out, too. After about 45 minutes they buttoned everything up and we were airborne. 3 hours in Nevada must have been hell!

They don’t accept pets in extremely hot weather. They also have to limit cargo weight due to the heat. The heat affects takeoff and so they sometimes have to limit the weight.

We are on the Pride, stuck because immigration won’t let us run around Kiel and Carnival doesn’t want us in the commercial port or away from the ship if they suddenly find they can get underway. We are still offloading the last of the charter flight people tomorrow and are down to 700 people on board as of Friday at 6 pm. If you read a google translate version of the news from the Kiel paper it says we ran aground, which we did not as we were in the regular shipping lane. The motor in one of the azipods ate itself, so here we are. The overall mood is pretty relaxed, all the angry people got off the ship yesterday. Frankie sounds like he took a nap. You can go to guest services and ask everyday questions again. Carnival announced they are doing an abbreviated British isles cruise following this unexpectedly extended Baltic cruise and that cruise has already sold out. Of course we are still parked up in Germany so….? A mostly empty cruise ship is a delight, let me tell you!
