    Hi, Zlata!! I remember that Simon Fischer also mentions in one of his books (I think it’s “Basics”) that one doesn’t technically bow in a straight line. Rather, the bow moves around the string. He said that if you attempt to bow completely, perfectly straight that it causes tension and lack of fluid motion. A ringing theme in his book is that the movements we violinists make is so small as to be imperceptible. I think it’s the same as these figure 8’s, that these movements are so small that it’s imperceptible, but it’s effective to keep us fluid and expressive instead of stiff and tense.

      Yes, the fluency is key for a good sound and it differs per player, violin and bow what’s the sweet spot.

    I have not played for several years and I’m trying to pick it up again. My experience is the same as yours. I was trained to keep the elbow still and bend my wrist as you do. This was very interesting. It also gave me confidence that I remember more than I thought. Thank you!!

    Very helpful!!! I’m working on English, French Canadian and Cape Breton music right now. There’s not much need for long bowing but this advice is still helpful. I find the “straight bow” difference interesting. I’m going to work on/with these ideas tomorrow during practice. Thanks much!🌞✌️😎

    Thankyou again. Regarding the Perlman tip; you did a video a while ago where you cited Perlman's advice to have the tip of the bow very slightly pointing away from you on the up bow (your bowing hand slightly towards you) and the tip slightly towards you on the down bow. I tried that and found it very helpful. I was actually astonished how much difference it made. In tonal consistency and in helping with transition from up bow to down.

    An angled bow will always start the strings vibrating faster than a straight bow, because an angled bow places more hair, and hence, more friction on the string. However, too much angle will allow the bow hairs to bend too much to get grip.

    • @violinlounge
      @violinlounge  3 роки тому

      Yes, my bow maker already said that it works for some bows to have more impact/grip that way.

  • @gawags4709
    @gawags4709 Рік тому

    The teeter-totter technique at the end makes a difference with my bow and violin. It feels like I can get extra grip on the strings with that motion. I am using a Fiddlerman Pro Series bow and I don't really need to do this. Straight bowing works the best for me with a very and gentle rounding of my bowing motion as I change directions. I love the figure eight idea. It helped me to get a better understanding of what is happening. Even if it's not quite a figure eight motion. These ideas are good for me to grab onto because it's still very easy for me to accidentally change lanes. From all the various instruction on this subject I feel I am being taught to focus on keeping the same contract point and producing not just a quality tone but developing the techniques to maintain that tone. 🙃 I do feel that my bow does a pretty good job of tracking straight across the strings all on it's own.

    • @violinlounge
      @violinlounge  Рік тому +1

      Wonderful! I have a Fiddlerman Pro bow here too and also feel it works best to just bow straight as it's stiff enough.

      @@violinlounge OMG !! Hi Zlata, Viola case got jarred between practice sessions.. I didn’t think much of it, didn’t anything happened until next practice session when the soundpost was rolling around in the case!
      I loosened the strings to take off any pressure after I realized this. Also, the sound-post is now out of the body. I was able to shake it out through an
      f-hole.. Unfortunately, it’s Sunday morning here and I can’t get ahold of the violin doctor right now. 😩

      @@violinlounge wow Zlata, my violin doctor Erika is amazing.. she met me at 3 pm and placed the post nicely within minutes and I’m back in business. I think it’s resonating better than before. We were thinking that maybe that wasn’t the first time it was disturbed. I did have an ‘accident’ with the viola several months ago, but I thought the post was ok. My advice to any students reading this, is that if you shock your instrument even if it’s in the case and you think it’s ok, have it checked out by a pro anyway. They don’t charge much for putting the post in, and it’s worth the piece of mind to have it set right, especially if you are noticing one string sounding more dull than another. I thought it was just cuz it was an inexpensive viola with deadening strings maybe, but no.
      It was also nice to have her confirm that my viola was actually one of the better examples for an inexpensive student viola that actually had a decent setup. Apparently everyone’s mileage varies. She pointed out the issues, but none were significant enough to impede even an advanced student, except for a slightly higher string height at the nut than necessary, which is one even I noticed, and she did some fileing, problem solved. Can’t wait to practice again 😉

    Both of my violins (with the Carrera bow), and my cello, respond better when bowing at a slight angle away from the bridge, though the impact varies. Low positions and sul tasto aren't very sensitive, but it becomes pretty critical in high positions and sul pont. Also, the student violin doesn't care much, whereas the cello is quite picky about it, and the new violin is somewhere in between. As for the "third 8," it seems that they all prefer that one bows parallel to the edge of the bridge by the respective string; anything else (especially overdoing it on the low string) produces a kind of "rubbery" response and tone.

    Greeting,
    I'm studying an Arabic music that is different in somehow from international music. However, my instructor only cares about reading and playing music that written in the note sheet. The sound that I make during playing is horrible. I can send you a video if it is possible to hear what I mean.
    I need a teacher like you to listen to me playing and tell me what part needs to be improve and how can I improve it. Is it possible to do it online by using Zoom or any other application? Or you don't do this type of teaching?
    Regards,
