- If you've ever wondered what a random Saturday afternoon looked like for me, here is your insight. Yesterday I spent a little bit of time working on the Sega Daytona USA Twin cabinet I picked up from Coinopwarehouse. So far things are looking pretty good! In this video we look at the VR light and buttons control assembly and replace the shifter.

Thanks for this detailed video guide. It was a wonderful help to me installing a new SuzoHapp shifter in my Daytona USA.
Oh nice! That’s incredibly niche and I don’t know that too many people would benefit from that outside of just watching it for “fun.” Thanks for sharing that, it’s nice to know things are helpful once in a while. Best wishes on fixing up your Daytona.
One of the staples of Sega during the promise time.
I know Daytona 2 is “better”, but you’re right, it’s about the time period. Also, this was relatively cheap for a Twin setup.
Love the WIP videos! A nice balance of overview and detail, without being to brief/drawn-out. Looking forward to the finished product, and an updated room tour!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Daytona was defiantly my favorite arcade racing game growing up. Honestly, growing up, the only arcade racing game I remember playing was Pole Position... but right around the time I was a Senior the thing to do was go to Dave and Busters and they always had the 8 car Daytona and it was always a blast to race all your friends. I always got a kick out of the Sonic references and the dangling rear view mirror ornament. I really got into the shifter and I’m probably one of the guys that beat the hell out of it causing guys like you to need to buy replacements.
So many people just went manual on that game. I was guilty of that in my youth even, save for a few times when an adult would encourage trying it out. I plan on getting much, much better with it now.
I had a similar issue with one of my Daytona USA cabs. The VR change view buttons would work when pressed but they would not light up. Swapping boards and bits of pieces between the cabs helps a lot with troubleshooting and narrowing down where the fault is. In the end I used a multi-meter to test continuity right from the light bulbs through every connector and board and discovered I had some dirty pins on one of the boards. Contact cleaner on the dirty pins brought the lights back to life for me. Sounds like your issue might be slightly different though.
That’s the kind of tedious work that I don’t think many realize can go into something like this. Glad you figured it out. Once I get the second monitor chassis back I’ll attempt something similar with the second board set.
You are keeping Arcade SEGA history alive. 👍🏽
It was somewhat unintentional but you’re right, 7/10 machines I have are Sega. It’s like when I realized how much I liked Sinestro when looking through my Green Lantern art prints.
I still hear that tune in my sleep... Great game.
It’s for sure a top ear worm of video games.
Love seeing videos like this.
Thanks man!
Next project: Scarlet Sprites builds an Out Run 2 cabinet with just a toothpick. Good job.
Hah, there was actually someone local selling an Outrun 2 Twin a few months ago. I have honestly never played the arcade version of that.
BRAVE SOUL buying a Daytona. Looks like you don't have any 3D issues on that side at least! My bro has a Daytona twin and he tries to keep 3 boardsets working as they inevitably flip out at some stage. The usual killer apparently is the fans die, then the ram chips die. So yeah absolutely keep your fans going and providing that cool air over those precious chips. Just last week we had a monitor die and geometry issues on one side but it turned out to be a bad ROM.
I wish you good luck in your mission that is repairing a Daytona then keeping it alive.
After fixing and restoring Virtua Racing I have that BDE flowing.
It’s so satisfying getting something up and running. I just built a Crazy Taxi out of spare parts. There were moments of frustration for sure but it’s worth it!
That’s amazing, congrats on that. The feeling when it finally kicks over and you know you have it running...gold.
It’s funny how incredibly simple the design of the gearshift is, especially compared to what you would find on a Hard Drivin cabinet which uses an analog stick instead of simple switches.
First time I've seen the insides of one of my favorite machines. Awesome video.
Thanks Erik, this one is for sure special.
Looking forward to the next update. Neat seeing how these machines were put together and how mechanical parts work like the stick shift.
The shifters are pretty neat, I don’t think it would be terribly hard to rebuild the broken one now that I have it out and can see how it works. That’s always the added benefit of these cabs, you learn so much by taking them apart and playing with the pieces. Gaining knowledge for decades old machines that has no practical application in the real world!
Its cool to share your saturday work! It’s nice have hobby, time go fast I think!
Thanks man. Not nearly enough time to work on stuff.
Another great video from you Scarlet. This Daytona USA unit is iconic on your channel. We need this to be preserved since it's one of the reasons the channel grew so largely with subscribers bro. 8^)
Anthony..
I’m doing my best. Next video on it, hopefully it’s finished and running.
This was great! Thanks for sharing your progress.
Thanks for taking a look. Hopefully the next time is it up and running.
How stinkin great is this? Blemishes aside, the side art is just gorgeous. Those warm colors. I can smell the cocoa lotion in the air. And I like the new shifter! The only way it could be cooler would be a chrome skull or something. Lol and the coin door lights are something I need to do on my machines. T10 you called the bulbs? Im assuming that’s generally universal?
Thanks man! Sometimes there are bulbs with different wattages but these are the ones I use almost universally...

Great video
Thanks man!
Best smile ever ❤️
Thank you!
@@ScarletSprites cant wait to see everdrive pro review though
Awesome! I'll look forward to see how progress is made! Congrats on this guy!
I've come to a realization... besides a Big Red, and besides an Ivan Stewart.......I want a Xenophobe.
Man it’s been a LONG time since I’ve seen a Xenophobe in person. It’s a cool looking cab. I like the ones like that that differ from the norm. They really experimented a lot there for a while with different sizes and layouts. I’m a sucker for the aesthetics even if I don’t particularly love the game.
Hey dude, good luck with the other car on this machine, at least you have one working. I was hoping to get some advice for MVS carts that have an SD reader on them. I have a 161 in 1 but all the hacked games are cheated and you can't turn it off. I eventually am going to set up a hyperspin pc in there, but I want to keep the mvs too.
The 161 is kind of garbage with all the hacked versions of games on there. If you’re not using the Unibios with Pick’N Mix (hides all the trash versions of games on the cart) then that may be a good bandaid. If you want a true flash cart with all the original games and no glitches, go with the NeoSD.
On this Monday Morning Day 6 of Lockdown Good Things happening there look forward to how it all ends up
Thanks man, I’m excited and optimistic about this one.
You show the connectors for the white plug joystick, do you know who makes those?
I'm doing a complete rebuild on a set of Dayton twins. Including repainting the base enclosure from bare metal and all new hardware. I'm also cleaning the PCBs and recapping the entire system.
Good luck with that. At some point I may decide to do that as well, I just don’t know when I’ll have the time to do more than just a touch up.
The connector came as part of the new joystick. I’m assuming Happ is producing those?
amazing great job! shame you cant swap out the shift stick on the happ for something better like an actual leather wrapped shifter from a real car. I did that for my thrustmaster shifter for pc mame and love it with daytona usa. Too bad the led lights didnt work for the vr buttons, my ocd would make me fix it somehow but it seems daunting. Did the cabs come with working marquee too?
It’s possible that I can swap the balltop off for something else but I really didn’t have anything to switch to and I was all on board with just getting it fixed. I’ve found that I sometimes dwell on details like that and then it holds the whole project up.
The marquee isn’t working but I’ve since fixed that by rewiring it for a 4ft led tube. Or so I think...haven’t actually powered it up yet.
@@ScarletSprites awesome pick up man and excellent work, im so jelly 😋
@Scarlet Sprites Looks like it might have been awhile on Daytona here, but if you need parts, hit me up. I have lots of Scud Race/Super GT parts, some parts are interchangeable along the Sega Model lines. I even have a control panel or two with steering motors (there are a few different motor models), button boards, shifters, and some other cabinet parts may be interchangeable...
Thanks man, thankfully everything works now. I needed a drive board for the one side and a chassis repair but all is well now. It’s not the prettiest machine I own but it works.
@@ScarletSprites yeah my super GT has been My money pit. Bought it non-working as parts. Bought a board set off eBay to try to get it working didn't work. Bought a second set of machines at an auction non-working as a pile of parts. Got two working monitors and two working board sets out of it which was a plus and also picked up a free parts machine that was a touring car converted to Tokyo cop. Got two Tokyo cop boards and a working monitor and a bunch of parts. So out of about six machines I finally have a working pair and a shelf full parts 😂 not to mention I picked up two Daytona USA 2 that were the two different versions mismatched. One cabinet looked like it had fallen down the stairs but the other was decent so I made one and put the other board set on the shelf along with more Sega model parts.
@@ScarletSprites LOL also forgot I used to have a Manx TT pair and a wing War pair so I guess I have had more Sega model hardware than any.
You really do like them fixer-upers. Doesn't seem anywhere near as bad as that legendary job you did on the Virtua Racing cabinet you did. This seems more like wear and tear that also needs a deep cleaning.
Yeah, that’s exactly it. Surprisingly all of the fans are even still running. Voltages in power supply seem good so I may not even replace those right away.
A lot of people are shooting for restoration with their arcade cabinets. What if you went for restomod? Make the shifter from actual car parts, the seat reflect an actual period NASCAR seat with safety netting, and helmet that matches the cabinet’s livery.
Who says I’m not wearing a helmet even now!? Jokes aside, the pinball community is pretty high on non-factory and third party mods on machines. It seems much more common/acceptable to collectors in that arena for whatever reason.
@@ScarletSprites That is a little too overboard, because when it isn't done "right", the modder can put in too bright L.E.D.s, or the light-animation looks weird, because the table's L.E.D. lighting turns off quicker than incandescent lighting. Pinball table's made pre-2009, have table light animations with the soft "after-glow" of incandescents iin mind.
Yeah, I’ve read about that. I know there is a whole thing about bulbs and color temperature and reaction times like you mention. I was actually thinking more of the installation of additional objects beyond just the lights.
👏👏👏👏
Thanks Linda!
Daytona 🥰
I won’t lie, when the machine kicked over the first time and the announcer said “Gentlemen Start Your Engines” followed by the roar and the seat rumbling...goosebumps
How’s the Daytona working so far ? how many games are in your collection now and can we get a room tour of your collection soon?👍 enjoyed the video
I’d like to wrap up the two videos I have in the works and possibly do that for end of year. Daytona remains everyone’s favorite game in the basement.
@@ScarletSprites I picked up a working virtua racing upright. I got I unloaded off the truck at home. Plugged up Now I get a blank screen 🫣. Something has gotten loose or I don’t know where to start. I guess I’ll start at power. That game has so many boards and 2 power supplys. Complicated
Definitely was easier to troubleshoot because I had two sides to go back and forth on. It’s A LOT of wiring and boards.
@@ScarletSprites have a good week What state are you located in ? I’m in NC I do find deals around this way
PA
This stuff is super interesting to watch, but good God, I'd never have the patience for this myself. If I can't hook it up to a supergun and be playing in 30 seconds, I don't want it. But hey - no dead rats this time.
In the past few years I’ve found it almost more fun and entertaining to troubleshoot and get these gems running than actually playing. Seeing them run complete once finished is pretty gratifying, but yes, I get your point. There are days when I sometimes want to put my foot through the glass and snap a pcb in half.
nice
Thanks man!
Any tips on the gas pedal. For some reason my gas pedal is not functioning anymore. Any help.would be appreciated.
I've unfortunately got nothing for you on that one. I haven't had to rip that apart just yet.
I just came across your video because a local seller has a sit down single Daytona USA machine he will sell. He says everything works except the screen. I am new to owning an arcade unit and was wondering approximately how difficult and ball park how much I will be looking at for a new screen.
In your case I’d pull the monitor chassis and send it to Chad at ArcadeCup.com. It’s going to be about $200.
@@ScarletSprites Thank you for the advice!
@@touringteg Sure thing. I’d also recommend avoiding the temptation to install an LCD. By the time you’ve bought the LCD panel, bought a new mounting bracket, and bought a signal converter, you’ll probably be spending more money than had you fixed the original chassis and kept your game original. Just another piece of unsolicited advice. Good luck!
@@ScarletSprites I may as well ask what you would offer for the single sit down Daytona USA unit. The seller isn't sure how much they want and I don't know what to offer. They are selling two Sega Hang on units (one working one not) for $750. I am thinking $500 since it will cost another $500 USD ($800 CAD) to get the screen working again. I'm in BC Canada.
@@touringteg Yeah, are both monitors out or just the one? Racing cabs are large and heavy; few people want them in their house. Daytona is obviously a popular game though so it’s market can be unpredictable and very region based. Offering $500 seems reasonable.
Ok, you MUST sing the Daytona USA song in your next video! PLEASE! or have your wife do it....
I don’t think anyone really wants to hear either of us sing.
Looks great man! Hey do you have a link for the coin door lights? I’m liking those a lot man, may need to do some upgrades myself!
Yep, here you go...

Thanks!
Quick question, hows the shifter from happ compare to the original? Does it have the same feel (does it have the wheels inside)? I’ve been debating upgrading mine. One of my shifters is super sensitive. It will shift out of gear even if you are just resting your hand on the shifter while playing. I think the micro switches are just so worn that it makes the switch with barely any pressure. Thanks man
How many machines are you at right now? I'm at 6 completed and 3 more to go.
2 Aeros, 1 Sega Swing, A TMNT cab, a 4 slot MVS, Thunderblade and a Sitdown Naomi.
I have ten right now (Neo Geo 4-slot, Blast City, Astro City, Virtua Fighter, Virtua Racing, Midway SportStation, Virtua Cop 2 (x2), Capcom Big Blue, Daytona USA). Should be able to finish Daytona by end of summer and then I need to see if I can work on turning a Virtua Cop into a House of the Dead.
Hey there, where are the monitor adjustments located?
On the monitor chassis itself. You have to remove the back panel and the pots should be staring at you.
awesome excellent video. i had just realized my son had unsubed me from your channel. i beat the shit out of him! jk lmao. he got upset because i went through and deleted all his stupid channels--hes 7. but i was wondering why i hadnt any notifications all week. Anyway, you know I love your channel and im subscribed again.
I don’t blame him, there’s not much here for most under the age of 30. He shut this arcade sh*t down and went back to Fortnite. Hah, glad to have you back Mark!
Que envidia loco, mí sueño es lograr eso
Thanks man! It was good timing and I was lucky to get this.
@@ScarletSprites saludos desde Argentina bro
Whats the best stuff to get rid of rust? I ordered a couple Virtua Stick High Grades and one of them has rust on the metal bolts on top.
Evaporust. It works magic. I went through two bottles of it while working on Virtua Racing. The only downside is the part must be fully immersed meaning you have to take apart whatever it is you’re working on.
@@ScarletSprites Thanks man, I appreciate it.
Are the led light bulbs plug&play? Or is there more to it? Can you provide a link?
Yes, the red leds are just plug and play...
www.amazon.com/dp/B013SW3KTE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_m97cFbTRF5FH2
Scarlet Sprites thanks! To be clear, the link you provided defaults to RED. But I assume you selected WHITE for all? Also, were the LEDs the same for the Coin Slots and the VR Buttons?
Oh, the link I gave were for the coin door lights. I always use red for those. The VR button lights were BA9s but they didn’t work.
Scarlet Sprites ah ok! I thought the issue was the board-not the lights.
When the LEDs were in with the swapped (and working) board they didn’t light. Putting the bulbs back in they worked fine. Something off with the connection on the first board but regardless, the new LEDs didn’t work.
Link for New Shifter please thanks!
They’re on Happ’s website. Not cheap but they’re the only place I could find them at the time. They’ll pop up used now and then on forums and sometimes eBay.
FIRST!!!!!!
I’m just glad someone was mildly interested. I never know how this stuff will go over.
@@ScarletSprites I hear that. Hope all is well man. Hopefully next year we can meet up at too many games again.
It’s rescheduled for September but man, even that seems like a roll of the dice right now.
@@ScarletSprites yea it's my birthday weekend that's its rescheduled for and also a car show in Ocean city which I go to every year. Channels doing well man. I enjoy the more laid back content. Can't wait to get back into it my self soon. I just watched your ASTRO video Im pretty excited for that thing.
Wow... how much was that?
Only $400 for both!
@@ScarletSprites Amazing deal!
Real Nascars run a ball top, I much prefer it.
Nice, I wasn’t aware of that.
Great video
Much appreciate you taking the time to stop by!
