  • Second half highlights from the First Division match between Wolves and Manchester United at Molineux on 6th October 1973.
In the weeks prior to their match against Manchester United, Wolves began the 1973-74 season by winning their opening two matches at home to Norwich City and Sheffield United, but then failed to record a single victory from their following seven matches. It was a grim run of results for Wolves that left Bill McGarry's team in a lowly 19th position in the league, just one point above relegation.
Part of the problem was that striker John Richards endured a barren start to the season, going ten league matches without registering a goal. During Richards' worrying goal drought, his strike partner Derek Dougan and midfielder Jim McCalliog scored all twelve of Wolves' league goals between them - including both goals in the defeat of Manchester United. In March 1974, McCalliog was transferred to United following almost five seasons of fine service in the Wolves midfield.
Wolves ultimately regained their form in the league from mid-late November. An impressive 3-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur ( • Tottenham Hotspur v Wo... ) began a revival in results over the remainder of the season that enabled Wolves to haul themselves well clear of relegation with a final league position of 12th. Most memorably, Wolves defeated Manchester City in the League Cup Final on 2nd March 1974.
Manchester United were similarly in need of points from their match at Molineux after an unconvincing start to the season had left Tommy Docherty's team in a very modest 14th position. Their previous two matches at Leeds United and at home to Liverpool had produced creditable draws in each, but the fact that both matches ended goalless also highlighted United's overriding problem - a severe lack of goals. It proved to be a prime reason for their eventual relegation that season, as a paltry total of 38 league goals would testify, with Sammy McIlroy finishing as United's top scorer with just 6 goals.

"Picking up the crumbs off the rich man's table". Haha. Dear old Hugh Johns. And a nice goal from Derek Dougan on the eve of his fiftieth birthday.

Thanks for uploading this and bringing back more memories. I was sat in the old Molineux Stand and this was a big day out for me, the second ever Wolves game I went to and deserved the victory. I don't see how United could have been given the second goal, you can't kick a ball out of a keepers hands.

Just watched the 3min clip of the wolves v preston game in 1949 , yep colour footage absolutely amazing . The F.A. Cup is brought out and paraded on a sort of stretcher for the entire crowd to see as it makes its way all around the edge of the pitch.

if alex ferguson had been manager at time, he would have mentioned to ref- that the colour of the ball clashed with wolves shirt and that was to the home clubs advantage, brown balls were still used in the 1970s..

    Hello good afternoon,
I really liked being able to get the games between Wolves-Belenenses for the Uefa Cup in 1973. Do you have it? Do you know where I can get it?
    Best regards

As a 15 year old Wolves Fan watching from the Molineux Stand there was another event at this game that will always stick in my mind. Man U fans at that time had the reputation for being Englands worst. Before the game the United fans in the South Bank invaded the pitch and ran towards the Wolves fans in the North Bank. They got about as far as the half way line, I hadn't been to many games and at that time this was a shock for me!

at the end, there was loud chanting of..'' you're gonna get your fucking heads kicked in! ''
that was the main agro chant at the time...prob. went off big time outside Molineux after the game..
should imagine the Wolves dished it out as well.

At 7.40 - who's singing YNWA? Lots of clubs used to sing it before it became toxically associated with only LIverpool (in Eng).

John Richards would walk into the side, would take Hibbitt over Nunes or Moutinho
