As a cartoonist, the very best comic book boards I've found are from EON! Their line of boards are excellent! They're ultra bright, brighter than any others I've seen, the surfaces are smooth and really take pencil and ink very very well. I would highly suggest all my fellow cartoonist, give them a try! I think you will like them.
zuzana 94 I'm glad you found it helpful! Thank you for the kind words, as well. I plan on doing a video like this for inks, as well. The eon is amazing bristol board in terms of brightness and smoothness. If you prefer something with a little more tooth closer to the strathmore finish, their HD smooth is the way to go. Seriously, the HD plate is like glass.
The paper is not stapled at this stage. After it is reduced, trimmed, and printed it is bound for release. This stage is typically handled by the printer contracted by the publishing house, and I have no knowledge on binding, sorry.
Holy god u message quick, anyway thanks and I look forward to seeing more of your awesome work, those pictures on comics that you did with a brush really made me go like Wow I really love the one you did on canson, I seen other can son papers but none are smooth as the one u recommended
Yeah, I try to stay on top of my replies haha. And thanks for the compliments on my work, it means a lot. As far as Canson papers, their Foundation series Bristol is available in a lot of sizes and is smoother than the Artist Series comic boards, however they don't hold ink quite as well. Personally, I'm moving more towards Eon's comic boards. I just love the contrast I get with them, and it really helps my blue pencils stand out more when inking.
Can a canson sketchbook 80 pgs make a comic look as good' or do I need to get the other real smooth kind. Well out of all those papers I'll see what's cheaper and smoother
+bankaispirits In my experience sketchbook paper is way too toothy for ink work. Now that's not to say you can't do graphite comics. They're not as popular, but artists like Adam Warren pull it off really well. You ultimately want a paper that is smooth enough that ink wont bleed, and that holds the ink on the surface of the paper so it doesn't feather out for the best results. Strathmore 300 and Canson Foundation bristol are both very decent and inexpensive options. Manga paper is another VERY good option. It tends to be much less expensive per sheet, and holds ink very well (and extremely smooth). It's not as durable as bristol, and is thinner so you have to be more careful of the paper buckling when filling blacks. Some watercolor paper works well, as does mixed media paper.
Actually I can spend as much as I want xD but the 500 series, does it matter the size or is all the 500 series paper's as smooth, you just got a bigger size? Anyways thanks and 1 more question, does a zig manga g pen set do well, because last time I had a dip ink set, it was quail crow I think and it really tore my paper up, I'm just trying to make sure everything s alright for me to buy.
Strathmore and Canson boards tend to hold the ink on the surface of the board the best with any ink. I favor Strathmore. However, Fabriano just released a new product line (I think it's called 1264) which I've played with a little and have been impressed so far by.
Tyler Jones I did a review of Blue Line Pro in one of my other videos. To me, it's one of the lowest quality boards on the market and not suitable for nib inking.
Ragnorok64 Sorry for such a long absence. The computer that the scans are on is out of commission (power supply or mother board fried). I'll be ripping the hard drives out eventually so I can get all my files onto my other computer. Unfortunately I'm in the process of moving (AGAIN), so it may be a while.
i am trying to decide between getting Bristol board 11x17, or some of that deleter comic book paper with the blue lines on it. they are both about the same price, you get more pages with the deleter, but the bristol might be better i am not sure..anyone have any suggestions?
Go with Bristol. It's a lot thicker, and handles marker, heavy ink washes, and water color a lot better due to its thickness. Deleter paper also has a tendency to bleed with certain inks, and the surface isn't as durable. Since EON started releasing Manga format boards, I stopped using Manga paper all together.
As far as Bristol options go, the only stuff I'll use is Strathmore or Eon. The Strathmore 300 11x17 can be had fairly cheap, and even the prelined 200 is better than a lot of other options. Only the 200 is prelined from Strathmore.
My current top recommendations are Strathmore 400 or 500 series Plate (smooth) bristol, or Eon boards. If you don't want to go with the traditional 11x17 size, then Strathmore makes plenty of different sizes of Bristol that will get the job done.
Michael .W Roche It's really a matter of personal preference. I tend to prefer 3 or 4 ply Strathmore 400 or Eon HD plate for important projects or illustrations. I use Strathmore 300 or Blueline Pro (I have over 100 boards of this stuff.. it's ok at best) for practicing.
Ryan, I just came across this video! Very nice comprehensive review! I really liked what you had to say about Eon. Very good feedback. And yes... please stay away from using Black Magic on Eon Boards. That's why we released Eon Vortex. The two combined are a great pairing! www.eonprod.com. I tweeted this video, then Brett Booth retweeted to his followers (10.6K at the time I'm posting this). Again, great video and great review. Thanks for the kind words about Eon.
Brett Thompson Any kind words are because Eon Products just simply stand out. The Eon Boards are by far the brightest paper I have, and the Vortex ink goes on more consistently when filling blacks than any ink I've tried. Together, they give amazing results. I always highly recommend them. Thanks for the tweets! More videos will be coming on their way.
Marvel and Image boards are no longer sold directly to the public. However, you can get the same exact thing from either Blue Line or the Kubert School Store (where I get most of my stuff from). It's 3-ply Strathmore 400.

Eon does make a great board. I'm hoping they get the issue corrected on their HD plate boards fixed soon, but their smooth boards are great too.
Very helpful exactly what I needed , thanks and keep up the good work 👍🏻 the eon s look interesting I'll order some soon

I have a question how do u staple the paper

The link is broken :(
Are you sir related to Jack Kirby the great one ?
Locutz M Sadly, I am not!

Awesome info. Thanks a lot!
Can i ask? Which paper is the best in terms of less feathering? I mean which of them does not feather easily even in gentler strokes?
Strathmore and Canson boards tend to hold the ink on the surface of the board the best with any ink. I favor Strathmore. However, Fabriano just released a new product line (I think it's called 1264) which I've played with a little and have been impressed so far by.
@@RyanKirbyInks thanks for the info though by the sound of the paper you mention looks costly 😂.
@@joshuarecania9405 Strathmore 300 series works well enough and is fairly inexpensive.
@jameswilliams3304 the bristol+ is much better. The 1264 seemed great with pen and nib, but falls pretty flat with brush.
Have you thought of using blueline pro comic and manga art boards?
Tyler Jones I did a review of Blue Line Pro in one of my other videos.
To me, it's one of the lowest quality boards on the market and not suitable for nib inking.
Are you able to re-host the scans? The Imageshack link doesn't work anymore.
I will do that as soon as I get home. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

So does it mean that every comics in the market are bristol papers?
With the exception on Manga paper, this is pretty much the case and the industry standard.
Very nice your video. I´m looking for paper for inking page comics. Could you send me a suggestion? Thanks!

Thanks, Ryan Kirby.
My pleasure!
if i drew on 11x14 paper is that going to cause issues since the standard is 11x17?
It would only be an issue if you were working for a big serial comic publisher such as Marvel or DC.
@@RyanKirbyInks thanks man, as usual your videos cover topics that others dont
can I use the deleter comic book paper for making comics not mangas
No shit you can its paper....
Thank you, great info
but WICH ONE IS THE BEST FOR THE COMIC BOOK?

Ryan Kirby alright

Common Boi you can purchase it from their website, so anyone can use it. I've had really good results with their HD Plate paper

Boy where can i buy marvel or image comic art board
Marvel and Image boards are no longer sold directly to the public. However, you can get the same exact thing from either Blue Line or the Kubert School Store (where I get most of my stuff from). It's 3-ply Strathmore 400.
Eon also sells a board called "the Big 2" which has the bluelines for Marvel on one side and DC on the other.
