'A Pretty Understandable Killing'- the title for my next Western.

You're videos are always funny and informative :) I love to put on playlists of your content to listen to while working. I feel like I need to rewatch this saga when I can pay closer attention to the screen though. You are right there are a lot of names in this one.

      A screen full of names.
Who lives, who dies, who acquired the iron throne... Oh wait, nvmd.

Great saga. Read the book in my late teens. I still remember one specific quote even 30 yrs later: 'då treiv han atgeiren og hogg av han hovudet, så det trilla bortetter bordet, der kongen sat. Då lo kongen, og alle hirdmennene lo med han' - in english: 'then he grabbed his halberd and chopped the guys head off, so it rolled across the table to settle in front of the king. Then the king.laughed, and his entire retinue laughed with him' - my favorite saga quote. Nice hat, btw. Do you always wear a tie in the wilderness?

With so many murders, it's a miracle that there were any Icelanders left to be converted and pass on the stories.

Something that you have to remember is that there weren't really any wars in medieval Iceland (the largest battles involved maybe 200 people and they were rare). Population was small and spread out, political power was decentralized, so murders and feuds take the place of wars instead, but in the end there probably isn't much of a difference in how many young men are dying violently.

    Thor and Christ dueled?
O.O I wanna learn more about that! 😂

From what I recall, there's not much to it really. Basically it was used as an explanation about why someone's ship went down -- if the captain had been worshiping Thor like the rest of the crew, it wouldn't have sunk, but since the captain had converted to Christianity but the rest of the crew hadn't, the ship sailed into a storm (i.e. the bad weather was the "duel" between Thor and Christ) so the ship went down. Thor was the god of thunder and storms, after all, so this was the argument.

*Sarah Gray* Thor being dumb brute, quick to anger against magic, is more wanting to pull up some planks from the ship to make a crucifix and try to nail Christ to it. Which, I don't know how long ships are built, but I'm guessing that's what would sink it if the wrong boards are removed.

Quick question and you might have answered this somewhere, but do you plan on writing a translation of the Prose Edda to finish the set with the Petic Edda and the Saga of the Volsungs (+ Ragnar)?

Really? His teeth hit the ice like... confetti? That's what you went with?! Oh, Dr. Crawford. I am disappoint. Let me help you out here. How about:
Like a handful of pebbles. Like a busted bag of marbles. Like dice on a craps table.
Feel free to hit me up next time you're in need of a good metaphor. ;)

Beyond just the story where Thor bests Jesus in a duel, do you intend on making any videos about the time Odin defeated Yahweh in hnefatafl or Tyr massacred the Holy Spirit in one-on-one bandy? And don't forget about the time Ragnarr and Hvitserk owned Abraham and Isaac in a sack-race. I think that's in Egil's Saga or something. (Seriously though, love the videos. Keep the jokes coming too. Love it.)

I can see how a great world civilization could never originate from such a people (or the Vikings, or the Mongols, or the Zulus, or the Cossacks ....). Warrior culture? Yes! Civilization? No.
