    Regarding Swedish become the official language. There is in effect no difference between a de facto and de jure official language.

      I love you Swedes, do you know that? You have such an comforting way of patriotism, its very pragmatic and including. To say, yay we don't have to make swedish the official language, because it is anyway is such a cool thing 😊, its so different to the nitpicker mentality of most Germans 😊

    About the relationship: yes, Germany SHOULD have been there, Germany has influenced Sweden ALOT, from the Hansa, Reformation wars, royal marriages to Prussian royalty to our language and the stoic engineering and innovations. Germany and Sweden have a lot of history together.

    After ABBA huge success in the late 70s (1976-1980) - ABBA took a break in 1982 that lasted for 40 years.
    In Germany, ABBA had 23 TOP10 hits and THE best-selling album of 1976, 1977 and 2021 (#5 in 1979 and #2 in 1980).
    Also, the members of ABBA did plenty of things in the last 40 years like solo albums and musicals (that includes "Mamma Mia!" stage & movies) ✌️

    11:23 A little wrong there with glassblowers, who are not associated with Skåne, but with Småland "Kosta" and Kalmar counties "Orrefors", which are north of Skåne and Blekinge, at the bottom of southern Sweden. 😉

    Eurovision 1974 was ABBAs first big international peformance/their breakthrough on the global stage. Then they continued to be hugely succesful and toured the world but took a break from the band from 1982 up until recently. The members were very active doing other things individually during this ”break” though. Björn and Benny wrote the music for several very succesful musicals for an example.

    Regarding that Germany not was mentioned, one could add that Germany is Swedens second most important trading partner after Norway, with about 10% of Swedens export going to Germany.

    I live on Gotland, Sweden's largest island. We have had a lot to do with Germany. Many of the houses in Visby were built by Germans who moved here in the 13th century. Visby was also part of the Hanseatic League with Lybeck among others.

    Also disappointed that nothing was mentioned about our neighbours (except the Nordics). Most look at the Baltic Sea as some huge void, but I see it as another border to a lot of nations. So we are close to Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Poland and of course Germany.

    I have no idea why we don't have statistics of foreign born citizens.
    It is Astrid Lindgren on the 20 crown bill.
    Yeah we have a harder time understanding Danish than Norwegian lol.
    Plan also means flat, as well as being short for flygplan (airplane). Swedish is a small language compared to German or English and we use the same word for many things. And similar to German we have a lot of compound words. Flygplan is one such word, consisting of flyg (fly(ing)) and plan (plane). The longest Swedish compound word consists of 17 different words and has 131 letters. Usually though our compound words only consist of two or three words on average.
    Karolina comes from Skåne which is Sweden's southernmost province, and it used to belong to Denmark in the past, so the dialects they speak there have some Danish influences. The phrase "Det är nimmt men tradigt att köra rullebör" (which actually means "It is easy but boring to drive a wheelbarrow.") is pretty outdated and is mostly only spoken by older people of that region.
    Yes Sweden did indeed fight in the Thirty Years War on the Protestant side.
    The man who we imported as king, Jean Baptiste Bernadotte (king name: Karl XIV Johan), was one of Napoleon's generals. His wife Désirée (queen name: Desideria), was the sister in law of Napoleon's brother Joseph Bonapare, and was even engaged to Napoleon at one time, but they broke up after he met and fell in love with his future first wife Joséphine.
    No we are not ensured for healthcare like you are in Germany. Instead our taxes pay for it.
    I believe you asked in one of your other videos if we also watch Dinner for One on New Year's Eve here, and the answer is yes, but it isn't nearly as popular as in Germany.
    No Kiss is not Swedish. They're from America. Keith likes Death Metal, and that is huge in Sweden. Norway likes metal too, but Black Metal is more popular there.
    ESC was ABBA's breakthrough moment which made them superstars overnight. They were active (and hugely successful) until 1982 when they went on a 34 year hiatus before they were reunited again in 2016. In 2019 they released their last and final album before officially dissolving the band in 2022.
    No Sweden isn't in NATO yet. Tukey did finally say yes, but Hungary still hasn't.
    Historically Sweden has always been influenced by Germany, but after WWII, Sweden has been more influenced by the UK and the US. We are still good friends though and a lot of Swedes live, work and study in Germany, as well as vacation there, and there are airplane, bus, train and ferry traffic between between Sweden to Germany. One ferry line goes from Göteborg where I live to Kiel in Schleswig-Holstein.
    Maybe for you next Sweden video you can check out some of our bigger cities Stockholm, Göteborg or Malmö. Or one about Swedish food? Oh and we also have an Ice Hotel...

      "I have no idea why we don't have statistics of foreign born citizens."
      The official reason is that its racist. The unoffical reason is probobly that ist trackable in stats. That would make it very hard for some parties. Its quite clear that some parties think the lack of statistics is benefiting them becasue they are clearly the on blocking it.
      While we do have numbers for immigration. So that can be checked up. If the people that imigrated stayed in the nation, we don´t have numbers for. But we also have numbers for emigration. And because most people emigrate and imigrate from the same nation (regardless of order), the numbers can be netted out to get a rought estimate.

    Sweden and Germany has for long periods of time , throughout history, have quite good relations. For hundreds of years, Germany was the dominant influence on Sweden and German was often thought in schools, as it was seen as an important language to know (these days it is English). In WW1, a lot of Swedes wanted our country to join in on Germanys side, for example. The 30 years war is a good example of not-so-good relations, as Swedish armies absolutely devastated Germany and Sweden came out victorious.
    The often German-labeled stereotype of being overly concerned with order can also be applied to Swedes. At least in Denmark and Norway, Swedes are seen as sort of uptight and very keen on having order. AS a Swede, I can see this being true, because our stereotype of Danes would be that they are drunk and sloppy, while the Norwegians are often the butt of jokes (often portrayed as dumb). Other than that, Germany and Sweden share other things, like both having great scientists and engineers and that many innovations have come from our countries.

    About the similarities between german and swedish. First: Both are Germanic languages but split onto protogermanic and protonorse sort of 500 AD. After that they devoped in different directions and up in north we started speaking ... old norse. which split up further. But the thing is that in 13-14:th century Sweden had a huge injection of german people that immigrated with knowledge about mining, new farming methods and crops and just culture. So german became the fancy language to speak and a lot of words in norse were exchanged to german, and we got a german church in Stockholm for example. Another injection of french come in 1700-hundreds followed by a new german injection in mid 1800's . Snälltåg means fast train in Swedish but the word is related to german "schnell" and not to the swedish snäll meaning nice. Swedish is full of theese misunderstandings that generated what is called false friends between the languages. Example stunde (Ge) = an hour, stund (swe) = a short time period (minutes)

    You don’t need a health insurance in Sweden, it’s taken care of by taxes. But you can get private health insurance if you want. Benefits to that would be a faster process, public healthcare can be a bit slow. But if the process is too slow, you’re allowed to choose private options anyway, so… For example, I needed a back surgery a couple of years ago and since public healthcare couldn’t ensure me to have it done within a certain stipulated period, I could choose a private hospital to do my surgery in time, without any cost, which I did.

    • @ChrisSweden
      @ChrisSweden  7 місяців тому +1

      Its a bit different in Germany "Krankenkassenbeiträge" payments for your health insurance and taxes are seperated, altough the amount also depends on your income. But basically its the same as in Sweden, because I think you are only be able to not pay taxes in Germany if you dont have a permanent address in Germany anymore and then you probably also dont get any German health insurance I guess.

  • @GuinevereKnight
    @GuinevereKnight 7 місяців тому +1

    Yes, it is Astrid Lindgren. It also wasn't that crazy when Sweden changed from drivning on the right side instead of on the left. I guess it just makes for a better story. It was carefully prepared. No, not because of Napoleon, our king was murdered, his son was later forced from the throne and the kings brother took over, he didn't have any children and the chosen replacement died suddenly so the swedish government chose a french military to take the throne instead, and he accepted. He did fight in the Napoleonic Wars, but Napoleon couldn't place someone on the Swedish throne. We don't need health insurance, you can pay for that if you want to, but you get care for at the most about 140 euros a year, and like 20 euros/visit (when you have paid for the max cost you don't pay for the rest of the period):

      The band on his t-shirt is Opeth, not KISS. ABBA:s international career and success was born in 1974 with Eurovision, 50 years ago this april. They were then active as ABBA until 1982. After that the two guys in ABBA continued working together, making musicals like Mamma Mia! (later made as a film) and the two women had solo careers - so they didn't do nothing - ABBA didn't do much though. Then they made a album after close to 40 years that came out in 2022 because they were preparing for the ABBA Voyage arena/concert with their avatars (or abbatars if you prefer) and wanted more material. So yes, they were launced with the ESC, as they hoped/planned. Sweden and Germany have a lot of history, so long back, they obviously don't mention (or know) everything. The ties were damaged during WW2, but even though we grew a little apart because of that (german was the first language in schools, since then it's english) we are again good partners and friends, of course, with a lot of germans visiting Sweden during vacations, röda stugor, Astird Lindgren etc.

    No Swede have a relation to Irak or Moldova, it's just business and politics but nothing of culture or even interest. The relation to the other nordics are more true for actual relations. It's not "abroad" in any real sense, it's like home, but weird. Germany is the closest country that is an "actual different country". The closest neighbour, considering that the nordics are so close they go by different rules. If the nordics were turned into one single country, I doubt anyone would note the difference, for better or worse.
