Thanks Pat! I really appreciate it.
Blast from the past! I was there that day. We spent the previous night camped out in the DC park in my boyfriends' converted school bus (Brown Sugar). When we woke up that morning the National Guard were everywhere. Not wanting to get involved in anything that might become violent we made the decision to leave early and started our way back home to NJ. Driving north on the turnpike we pulled off onto the shoulder for some refreshments and relaxation (LOL). Within no time, hundreds of cars also on their way back from DC joined us on the side of road to party. Before we knew it, the entire turnpike was shut down with cars blocking both lanes of traffic. I do remember the bonfire burning in the middle of the turnpike and seeing a police helicopter over our heads surveying the situation. Soon after the state police brought in a few of their own buses, loaded us up and took us to jail. I along with others who were not formally arrested were taken in by a local church where we spent the night awaiting rides home. Thanks for the memories!
Wow, Deb, thanks for sharing that story! That was truly a different time.
@@TheMickeyShuffle Yes, it was a very different time. Young and innocent, yet aware enough to know the war was wrong. Honoring all those who gave their lives and served our country this Memorial Day.
Really enjoy your channel enjoy all the history keep sharing

Another good one, buddy. And again, I was completely unaware of this. I learn something new every time. Thanks for posting. Well done.
Thanks Fran! I'm trying to find things no one heard of when possible instead of the same old same old. I'm glad you liked it and I appreciate you taking the time to watch!
@@TheMickeyShuffle I've passed it on to a couple of friends and they were surprised too!

Hey Mickey! It's Lauren Mayer. This is a great video - I had no idea this happened! I bet they were listening to some really good music while chillin' on the turnpike though. We miss you :-)
Hey there! I'm glad you enjoyed it:) Yeah, don't think a lot of people remembered it but I'm sure the soundtrack was pretty awesome! I miss you guys too. Hope all is well:)
I believe this day of antiwar demos was also the occasion for protesters to shut down hiway 1 in maryland, with many chanting " hiway one, hiway one, take saigon and washington !"
Wow, that is really interesting! I didn't uncover that in my research but seems very likely as cars were obviously also headed south from Washington after the week long rally! Thanks for the info.
@@TheMickeyShuffle thanks for your post--surprised i didn't know about this !
Born and raised in NJ, but was in Germany with my soldier husband when this happened. I barely remember hearing about it.
Hey Mickey, greetings - quick question! Mentioned to you I have some footage of our trip last spring to the old AC Speedway. I saw in your excellent video of the racetrack some old video footage. Is that public domain? From where did you obtain it? All I could find was some British outfit that wanted to charge me big bucks to use theirs (which seemed different). My video will be totally different than yours (more of a person on the site vlog style - less of a documentary like yours), but I wanted to open things with just a couple of the vintage clips for context. Your help is appreciated, my friend! (also feel free to delete this comment if you wish).
Hey there! Send me your email or email me at mfranz56@gmail.com. I'll give u the whole scoop.
@@TheMickeyShuffle Appreciate that! Shooting you an email now...
The protests and the war had one thing in common. They both solved nothing. Inflation and odd even plate gas rationing was next.
