Glad to see that the S. Steens herd has retained the pinto coloring over the years. I adopted a filly from this herd back in 1979 and showed her through 4H and won quite a bit all the way through State Fair. I had just been weaned so she was really easy. I had her outside leading in the pasture the day after bringing her home.

Thank you very much Steve and Oki. ❤️ I love horses so when she told us she worked there my heart kind of sank because the BLM, especially in that area, has had a questionable reputation with the locals in past years. It was very clean, the corrals were huge and most of the horses looked very healthy. Our friend loves horses too, she loves her job, and I trust her. Thanks again for watching! 💙 Have a great evening!

I became aware of the wild mustangs and the management of them through the Mustang Heritage Foundation. There is a wonderful independent documentary film called "Wild Horse Wild Ride" that you might be interested in seeing. It is about the adoption of some of these mustangs from the corrals. All of horses are not adopted by kind hearted families, however, and they end up at auctions for slaughter (sorry to bring up the unhappy ending for some of these magnificent creatures). Their management, and keeping a balance between nature, the cattle ranchers, and the herds of horses is a complex and complicated issue....at times driven by economics, politics, and beauracracies. Thanks for showcasing their beauty in your video, Ann.

We raised horses and I am all to aware of those that adopted with good intentions but ended up being the worst possible situations. According to our friend who works there and loves horses they have changed a lot of their policies including their adoption policies in recent years. Believe me when I say, I am very aware of these things and I am still skeptical if it is enough to stop things like that from happening. No system is perfect, but atleast they are trying. Thank you for watching and I will watch that documentary if it isn't one I have already watched. Take care. 💙

Thank you for posting this tour of Oregon’s mustang management facility. The narrative was pretty informative and I see in the comments a little more balance to recognize the downsides, as other posters bring them up.
The herds seem surprisingly calm if they’ve only been corralled for a few days. I’m guessing it’s because they are in their family herds, still. How these horses are affected by being adopted out and most never seeing a member of their own horse family again is maybe not often recognized.
If the BLM has an incentive to encourage joint adoptions within a family group the horses might have better psychological health over the long term.
Being able to tame a wild horse and keep it stabled or safely pastured is a more challenging project then many well-intentioned adopters probably realize. Sadly, it is these horses who most often slip through the cracks and into the slaughter pipeline. I suspect many rescue organizations have learned not to risk taking on obviously dangerous horses because of the risk they pose to staff and volunteers.
In such cases I’d maybe like to see humane euthanasia laws for any branded mustang to keep it from being sold to a kill buyer. Unfortunately there’s probably a black market for that type of horse, turn them into dog meat for puppy mills and so forth.
Maybe instead a rule that they be returned to a blm facility for rehab and re- homing. Even a few weeks back with other mustangs would probably help them recover, and being handled by confident and competent trainers.

Thank you for being part of the conversation and providing such food for thought. I absolutely agree with the suggestion of rehab and re-adoption. I believe that they have a vetting process for adopters that BLM has had to tweak over the years due to adoptions that had failed. Competent trainers at these facilities for that rehab is also a very good idea and I lack the knowledge of whether or not they are doing this currently. I will have to ask the person that we know who works there. Thank you again for watching and taking the time to make this comment. I really do appreciate ideas I had not thought of. Take care. Have a great day.

@@AnnJSundayDrives sure thing Ann, I’m always looking for ways to help horses live better lives as humanity seems to spiral farther into selfish depravity.
Maybe ask your contact about the Kiger variety of mustang, native to Oregon. I just watched a short video about them ( not a ‘UA-cam short’, but five minutes). …Emily Sparkle is the poster’s name..”All about the Kiger mustang..”
Often they are buckskins and also many grullas. Apparently much in demand and reportedly more easily domesticated than some other mustang types. Several of the ones near the start of your tour were fairly unique-looking, those pale tan paint horses must be pretty rare. There were so many horses there!!
Thx for your reply, have a blessed day.

I love horses. The Wild horses are absolutely beautiful to me. We actually have a huge population of them in the remote areas of Southern and Eastern Oregon. When the grounds are snow covered there is very little for them to eat, so this is one of the reasons why there is population control. Thank you very much for watching ❤️

Lilly the wild horses we have here in Oregon are mostly in Eastern and Southern parts of Oregon. It is a very humane way to handle the population control considering they would starve to death during the winter months while the grounds are snow covered. Thank you so much for watching. Have a great day.💙

How would you feel if you were torn away from your home and family?? A lot of horses that are rounded up don’t take to domestic life. They end up in auctions and kill pens. Shipped over the borders to slaughter houses. They don’t mostly end up in good homes. They end up abused and starved. This shouldn’t be glamorized. It’s just the beginning of a horrible end for these beautiful magical creatures.

    • @AnnJSundayDrives
      @AnnJSundayDrives  Рік тому +1

I understand the way you feel and this was not an attempt to glamorize anything other than the horses themselves. I myself had never seen wild horses up close, and they are as I had imagined. They are spectacularly beautiful. 💙
The BLM is a government agency that is constantly under scrutiny, as it should be. Sometimes it takes mistakes to learn better ways to do things, but to do nothing at all, is not an option. I am hopeful that the changes they have made in the recent years and the new changes being implemented will make a major difference in the adoption process for these beautiful animals. Take care.

@@AnnJSundayDrives darting with birth control. Easy. Less expensive. And the horses stay in their home and with their family’s. They’ve been doing it for years and still this happens. This is one of the nicer faculties is what I meant and the mustangs mostly end up in bad situations after this. It’s all about the BML pay checks, sadly. And of course cattle being more important. Even though it’s like thousands of livestock for every horse grazing on government land. Have you seen a herd wild horses run free just for the fun of running? Now that’s beautiful thing. These horses will never do that again. Very few end up in sanctuaries where they able to do that. I suggest watching Skydog Sanctuary videos. It’s an amazing place.

Thank you for commenting. The pens are actually very large and they don't stay there long. Thank you truly for your concern. I am hopeful that as the new policies get implemented and as the old policies change, or are replaced or even completely abolished, that the program and facilities will be reformed into something amazing. It is a Federal Agency that has to work within a budget, and bundles of red tape, in other words they need more money and it will take time. Thank you for watching and take care.
