the thing is that most scucesfull national managers dont come from top clubs, look at Spains coach, Luis De La Fuente, he only coached one club team Deportivo Alaves for only 2 months and got fired but spain hired him for their youth teams and after winning tournaments at the youth teams he got hired for the 1st team and won his first 2 tournaments, and the world cup winning coach Lionel Scaloni never coahed a team before Argentina and he won the World cup
Sure thats true, but the US has already tried this approach for 30 years and constantly get it all wrong. So its nice to see that the USSF is trying to bring in a legitimately great tactical mind. Either way we probably wont be truly compete until there is lower level football in united states.
What has Pochettino won as a manager? It’s so ignorant and a glaring example of American exceptionalism to think that we should even be in the conversation on the world stage. Once football is imbedded in our culture we can begin to have that discussion. It’s not a league, facilities, coaching, or all the money you can throw at our continued lack of silverware. Soccer is not a part of the culture. It’s an activity in the US. We play soccer we don’t live football. When kids play in the streets alleys and parks on their own with family and friends as well as for their clubs we can start the conversation. Do you really think that Americans can play a game for 4 hours a week for less than 20 weeks per year and beat countries who have kids playing 2-4 hours a day every day? We over supervise over coach and under perform. American parents are way too intense and put way too much pressure on kids with limited experience. Soccer is still a fringe sport in the US. If that changes so to will results. The US has over achieved, not underachieved. We do not have a divine right to success. While your kids play video games rather than kick a ball there will be Europeans and South Americans playing for the joy of it. Not for trophies.
I highlighted what pochettino won in the video. I understand where you are coming from and its frustrating to me as well. I coach a youth team in my town and the big conversations are we cant get anyone to play. And its not just soccer its every sport. But to say we cant be competitive is kinda ridiculous. We have competed on the world stage before with worse players and managers. Another thing is, the nation of 330 million people isnt going live and breathe soccer, it’s impossible to unify such a massive area with hundreds of different cultures into feeling the same way about one thing. What i do know is there are pockets of places where soccer is the life of thousands of people. I guess its about your outlook. Either way i am hopeful for the future, i cant change the circumstances surrounding whats going on here but i am trying to look at the positives.
