If only we could trust the people who do the assessments to get it right and not work to a hidden agenda to cull benefits regardless of people's genuine need for help. It's a shame we no longer live in that world of trust.

I won't say. I sit around doing nothing. I am disabled. But I do make my own lunch. I do wash my own dishes and heat my own food.
But then I started in paid work as soon as I possibly could. And feel I had to really work hard to. Earn enough. To.
A. Pay rent.
B. Pay for taxes , food. Water and electric clothing and transportation.
I was annoyed with a lot of employers who were located in places. Expensive to access. As a Worker. I would not often catch a taxi. I had to cycle to put the hours in.
All that. Generally left me. Tired. Time poor and rather angry and Single.
My desire to profit from work. And stay out of debt often made me grumpy.

Future assessments will in future be done not by a doctor, but by a skilled and specialist professional, who will have an office on at the minimum the 10th floor of a building with no lift.
Claimants will be called for an interview. Those able to climb the stairs will be immediately passed fit for work, without exception or appeal. Those unable to climb the stairs will be sanctioned for their non-attendance at the interview.
Bodies will be cleared from the staircase of the building at the end of each working day.

I'm 26, I work for a charity on a basic salary and don't take any govt support- I wouldn't be eligible. I've changed my career because I'm sick of compromising my own ethics for someone else's pocket. I pay rent privately and have some partner support but I'm still crippled every month by bills and tax. I get a takeaway once in a blue moon- like in an emergency every 6 months maybe, literally never get to go out for dinner, get my hair or nails done like normal women my age, holidays?! Yeah right! The best I'll afford this year is petrol down to the new forest for some camping (borrowing mums car). It is not 'takeaways' as you say that's hurting people, it's literally cheaper to go to McDonald's or the chippy than buy fresh veg and pay for gas or electricity to make a proper meal. Not to mention transport to and from the shop if you can't afford a car. The knock on mental health impacts have been significant, making work even harder. It is a spiral and reductive opinions like yours are damaging lives. Stop listening to the bullshit in the telegraph and leaving uninformed comments like this

The NHS do not have the resources to help people with mental health issues into work. I've been waiting 15 months for an ADHD assessment and told wil take another 6 months. No support offered in the meantime. Sick of this government who keep throwing up half baked polices and ignoring the real issues.

Most employers break the EA2010 in employment. Ive heard of 9 companies (Medirest under the nhs banner) leave disabled employees unable to fullfill their duties due to overloading them, failing in procedures but most people have no idea they have legal rights.
Disgusting lot, sack this man! Nobody voted for them GET THEM OUT!!! Maybe try not paying for 5 start hotels for economic migrants pretending to be refugees while ignoring our old and homless, and perhaps not inviting millions of economical migrants to come and live rent free. Instead of reforming the welfare system, reform the whole country, if we had faith in the government, and a happy country to live in, health overall would improve. Improve healthcare, improve education, improve emergency services, reduce the cost of living and nationalisation of essential services would go a long way to help.

I have severe ADHD with bipolar symptoms. I left college, tried to work, then crashed out of that. Tried to take my own life, luckily had a lovely group of friends who were there for me and helped me get onto Universal Credit and then I went through the health assessment, and my instability and suicidal tendencies made them give me LCWRA
For myself, and those like me, losing the money and losing the ability to support yourself will quite literally drive them to suicide. I'd pray for Sunak and the entire cabinet, but I'm afraid that the fact that this is occurring is proof that God is either oblivious to the horror taking place within his kingdom, or is powerless to stop it
You can still keep yourself on normal benefits. Millions do it every month. 🤦

This move is actually crucial. Anxiety and depression is a grey area to write people off from work and fund them with tax payers money for the rest of their life.
Very ignorant comment. It’s almost impossible to claim if you just suffer from anxiety and depression. You have to be completely debilitated by it to even have a chance of claiming. The benefits assessment system is brutal and very hard to pass.

But what about policies rumoured to create a float of Strike Breaking Unemployed and people in work. Homeless and living in caravans or vulnerably housed ?
People in ongoing metalwork contracts for example . Metal workers who's earnings are so low. They have to live in a caravan. To afford to be able to drive to work. Or in a mobile home !
When an employer won't take people on for more than 3 months at a time and of course most jobs are dirty and detrimental to long term health.
So why not give young folks a break from. The full impact of the economy by providing University places where they can hopefully find a partner before entering the modern workplace.
With all it's heat. Heavy lifting. Risk of injuries. Hazardous chemicals and grumpy co-workers.
Or deliver benefit payments quickly. Because it takes so long to establish a welfare claim. If there's any break in the claim. It might take a year to get back on a decent giro.
You got your introductory giro. Then your double giro. And then possibly a triple giro for being unemployed for more than a year.
Why not have it the other way around maybe ? And folks might jump into temporary jobs more enthusiastically ?
Why do I agree with a lot of what he says in this speech. I am normally against what government says as it has an agenda.
I agree a lot of people are genuinely unwell physically and mentally but not this amount of people. A lot of people can work and you must understand one of the reasons this country is struggling is because we have become an entitled culture and want everything for free.
Also there are so many people abusing entitlements and it’s not morally correct.

The money quite simply is just not in the NHS for this to be workable. If mental health services functioned at all, then people wouldn't feel the need to leave work. Pieces of the NHS have been getting sold off and privatised for several years now, I imagine the extra strain of this will be a breaking point, and much more of the NHS will become private
If they just funded our health system properly, gave people the help they need, then they wouldn't feel the need to do this
Have you gone through the benefits system? I had to claim briefly whilst I was sick and it’s absolutely brutal system and very hard to pass the assessments. Even if you do get awarded the money is not enough to live on. Sunak is making it sound like people are claiming for all sorts of minor issues which absolutely false. I’ve never met anyone who wants to live a life on benefits.

If you look at the universal credit payments that unemployed people receive, with bills and food expenses it is difficult for people to survive. Also if you pay nothing to people who do not engage, it is inevitable that some people will slip through the cracks. It is already difficult to get disabled benefits, even when you don't have a mental health condition. Doctors and consultant's letters from people who are specialists in their fields are best placed to assess people's ability to work.
Human dignity and intelligence is worthy of respect. Controlling and repressive behaviour causes illness and death.

If you want people who have mental health conditions to get back to work, then put more money into mental health care.
This is literally it. It's this simple. If they just gave the NHS appropriate funding and allocated resources to mental health care, then this situation wouldn't be happening
I have yet to receive a quote from a builder or tradesmen who hasn't casually dropped a cash (off the books) price. Sadly there are many very capable and well paid members of society who see no issue with not declaring income - normally also the first and loudest to complain about the state of government. They may be right about many points - but clamping down on all of these people who don't meaningfully contribute to our economy is fair and necessary to fix investment in our society.
Here's an idea! Help them recover TO work don't say work or die. That'll work wonders for depression and anxiety! Month 1: sign in 4 days a week in person. That's it. Month 2: 1 day a week in the building chatting to helpers or others etc. 6 months and fixed you fool

Look i get that there is a massive bill, however what does he wanna do about the backlogs, clerical errors, sanctions, and the myriad of other draconian punitive nonsense? Also the mandatory reconsideration process is woefully inadequate, i've had six of these assessments only to be reinstated after 9 to 10 months due to severe mental , mobility and other issues namely convictions meaning i can't do jobs in the care sector, as i cruelly found out x i volunteer with Bromley mind, go to university, help my parents, well my parent now sadly, any side hustle i can get, i just despair
basic communication skills are a problem with much of the country is full of social discrimination it is true that one is a victim of theft and not given their money over the counter which one has made by their own talent like i have been ripped off where i live where i dont receive any justice for my effort
