This video is a bit old but I think it's still relevant. I've been debating between Shelly, IOtawatt, Sense, and Lantern - a home made kit recently developed. The Lantern would be cheaper and yet covers each circuit individually but I'm going with the 6-channel you mentioned from CircuitSetup because I have three panels to monitor. This video was the first I heard of it and I think it'll suit my needs perfectly. Thanks!
I haven't heard of the Lantern one, but I can say out of the others, especially Sense, I'd rock my 6 channel expandable. I do have a full setup and calibration video on the 6 channel one. Not a whole lot has changed except the Watts is not templated anymore, the software was fixed on that and the IC does the proper calculations now.

5:55 that's useful here in Europe since in most cases your breaker panel is not so close to the electricity meter... so if you're taking too much power you can set the shelly to open the circuit before it's done by the electricity meter. Or another smart use is to connect a buzzer to the output pin so you hear an alarm when there's an overconsumption.
Interesting. Definitely way different panels there than compared to what I am used to. I am not one for trusting a smart breaker though when servicing a circuit.
@@digiblurDIY yes absolutely, I wouldn't trust this either. But if you connect a spring release coil module to the output pin of the shelly, it'll be the the shelly to tell the coil to open the circuit breaker.
Just got some ShellyEm myself, mostly to monitor my EV charging and logging info. One thing that could be done with a relay breaker could be to turn on the EV charging during the cheap rate hours and shutoff after. But I also didn't find any breaker that would have that feature.
Yeah, out of all the breaker panels I've been in I've never seen those either. Only worked on ones in the US though. The idea of the power monitoring shutting off the breaker at overload is a decent idea but they are already designed to trip at overload.
You can't use a breaker as a switch. Breakers are rated and listed for overload protection only. In the EU you can find DIN mountable line level switches. These must be protected by breakers.
FYI , anything with 120 amp ct clamps is preorder only. They only have 50 amp ct clamps available now i guess.
Would be good as a timer for hot water systems to turn off power to them
Its capable to measure bidirectional current? woud be return energy on 8:18 ?
the shelly uses Amps to calc the wattage.

Thank you for a great video. Is it possible to control the actuator output by current level detection? E.g. when current is over 5A then the output is activated. Then I can control other things in my house. Thank you very much!
I haven't used this with the stock firmware myself but you'd need to dig around the web interface and see if there is an automation for that. shelly.cloud/documents/user_guide/shelly_em.pdf
I've had a great experience with a similar product called the IotaWatt (opensource software!) that has more CT channels and feed it to InfluxDB + Grafana.
Depends on the resolution and number of channels you need. Circuitsetup.us one I did a review on is 16 bit and 42 channels.
Hi, any chance you could do another video on Node-red connected to Zoneminder please? I’m really struggling getting a flow working to motion detect and then turn on a light? Iv got Hassio running on unraid with Hassio node-red addon. Zoneminder a separate docker and integrated with Hassio. Appreciate any info thanks. Cheers
I don't use Zoneminder myself, I use Blue Iris.

For whole house monitoring do you use 2 CT clamps one for each legs for each US home breaker for total of 240volts? Will one CT clamps works for whole house measuring power usage? Also does this clamps bi-directional?
for split phase US power, you need two CT clamps.

Yes, it's just a daily total value that comes across during each sensor output. Set your automation to trigger off of that.
Great. Thank you. I work in an environment where code and other regulations are strictly enforced (academic situation). I have been trying to find out if ANY Shelly products are listed for US use. CE is never acceptable in our jurisdiction. Do you see any making that says "UL" or "UR" on the enclosure of any of your Shelly devices? I can't get an answer from the company. They just keep talking about CE. Anyone who understands the US NFPA would know that CE is useless. I really want to try these things but without a "listing" I am dead in the water.

@@digiblurDIY thanks. I had a lot of issues getting the Dimmers to flash. I had previously watched the vid you posted and that's what inspired me to flash my Shellys with Tasmota. I -- like you -- like to keep the number of different systems I support to a minimum if possible. The Shelly firmware also seems a bit clunky in my case in that it falls on and off wifi from time to time.... and I have a very solid unifi system in my home that has no issues otherwise. Anyway, I finally got the Dimmer 2 flashed, but only after a lot of research and trial and error. It would flash fine, but only the on/off button was showing in the UI. Finally used this thread github.com/arendst/Tasmota/issues/6914 and the post by daxy01 and it worked.
Do we have to use the Shelly clamp, or is the EM compatible with the blue clamp?
You would need to flash it Tasmota or something as the calibration would be off. I don't know if they enabled the ability to modify the calibration in stock firmware.

I wander if Shelly EM could monitoring a solar battery and when battery is low disconnect the converter?
but how can the Shelly knows it is time to shut off?
I explain better, I have an off-grid solar system, charge controller and converter with 12v battery.
Winter no so much sun in middle Sweden so if I have the converter on all the time it will discharge the battery.
Maybe you or some one has an idea?

Yeah you could do that with some automations.
You can not use those clamps for DC power. Batteries and solar pannels are DC and inverters are AC.

I have been thinking if putting one Shelly 1pm between the battery and the charge controller, shelly 1pm has one contactor so you could disconnect the controller or?
Putting it just on the cables before controller. and set weekly schedule.

@@fabioESERI don't know if the controller will shutdown the inverter or it will drain the battery? I thinking that we don't have so much sun in Sweden winter time. Do you think the controller Triron will shutdown to save the battery?
Thanks for another great video... do you know how to get total KWh per day without cloud (MQTT doesn't send total). You can get Total from HTTP but not sure if it resets daily or how to trigger a reset. I have it connected to Home Assistant and InfluxDB if that helps (still trying to see if InfluxDB/Grafana can do it).

@@digiblurDIY i'm trying that, but its not working as MQTT only offers Watts, not KWh which the utility_meter needs. I've tried integration sensor, but not having luck with that either :(

they said 2 weeks when i was on there site last week.
I shipped 14 orders yesterday, still making more boards. If you ordered an add-on board I've only been able to ship 12 out of 20 of those those so far. I'm waiting on some custom headers (11mm long, 20p), which should be in shortly.

Great Video ! I was gonna go the 6 channel route but like the plug and play of this one. So the shelly will not combine both channels for whole home?
It only has one voltage reference option but in a split phase I believe it should work given the voltage is the same just out of phase. I only have one of their clamps so I wasn't unable to test in a whole home setup.
@@digiblurDIY Would be nice if someone could write a script to do the math and give kwh usage of both clamps combined and bring into ha as an mqtt sensor. Just thinkin outloud im gonna get one with 2 ct clamps , i bet someone writes something for esp home or tasmota pretty quick. 60 bucks for 2 clamps and plug and play hardware is a pretty good deal. Yep, decent little product for price, don't get me wrong it is a worthy device. Definitely a go to for an easy dryer monitoring for folks that didn't want to do the pure DIY one, and great for people that just want to do 2 channels. You can of course add another to get another 2 channels of course. Which might not be a bad idea to grab both voltage references in a split phase config. You do have to consider costs as well though when doing that project.
I'd love to see them expose the calibration settings in the config for the unit as well as possibly doing a 4 or 6 channel down the line. That would be great!
@@digiblurDIY Ok, I guess i am reading the manual wrong.? In the manual it shows what i thought was the ability to connect 2 ct clamps and i assume read separate power info on each . Is this not the case ? Will 1 shelly em with 2 ct clamps not read each reference in a split phase setup? If not the shelly em is definitely not for me.

Man, I love your videos. Seriously. But, I am not trying to be offensive here but why do you pronounce tasmota ending with an o, rather than an a? This annoys while watching any video of yours which makes use of tasmota software. Perhaps this has to do with the English language not being my first language, in all honesty. Again, I am not trying to attack you. Just wondering.
Talked about this many times and even picked on myself with it. Probably a combination of my accent from this area combined with working with Motorola products too much and we called them Moto or Motos all the time. So it just stuck and roles into Tasmota. Old habits don't die unfortunately.
