OMG, it happened to me too. My cart was emptied several times too. I ended up being so frustrated that I went to Yoseka and at least got my A6 Hon Hiroko Kubota -Crescent Moon. As I recently lost my job, I am very cautious about my planner shopping and trying to rein myself in, which is hard but necessary to do! Even though I had other things I wanted to purchase, I have decided the Hon is all I'm getting right now.
Same here. It was my first time trying to order on the Hobonichi website. I got frustrated - even staying up until 2 am Central - and went to Jet Pens. I got what I needed plus a few extra pens from them instead. IDK why Hobonichi dropped the ball this year.
I woke up with a “Hobonichi hangover” this morning thinking, “What have I done?”. I had 4 orders in with 3 different places and spent way more than I had intended. Regrets! Instead of feeling good about my purchases, I felt sick. I know it’s was my own fault for thinking I needed to have my stuff on day one (FOMO queen, here). I canceled everything and put in one order with Hobonichi and it came to about $200 less.
That’s exactly what I said to my husband this morning, that I had a Hobonichi hangover! I didn’t wind canceling my 3 different orders with 2 different stores, but did wind up placing a 4th order with Hobonichi directly the next morning for the items only on the Hobonichi site, and of course paying for shipping because I no longer met the minimum, and way overpaying at the other two stores. Argh!
this is such a common feeling amongst the community. and for me, it's the time of year I'm paying more attention to finances, so the hangover feels WORSE! ugh.

I experienced all of the same struggles you did. Was able to get almost everything the next morning with no trouble. I hope things are better next year
I’ve been ordering from them since 2014 and have found that waiting until the day after launch has always worked really well. I’ve never found anything I wanted was out of stock the day after. I placed a large order today and everything was available!
My one “late” order an hour later did result in what I wanted being out of stock. That keeps me coming back at launch time. I’ll still be there at launch time next year, and hope for a better outcome. 😅
That’s not exactly how it was. For example last year the little gifts cover sold out in minutes after the release. Also the blue tambourine some years before as well.
I struggled too! But my “what the…” reaction wasn’t as church friendly. My hubby also tried to help; he was shocked at how much trouble I had. He’s used to me gliding effortlessly through the process even when others had trouble. But not last night. I finally got it to work at 2 am. 3 am your time. Bless you for vlogging about it so we can all feel a little less alone or stupid. Because we’re not. Virtual hugs to you!
Yeah, such a frustrating experience!! I wasn’t on social media…because it was late and then church, so I missed that others were also struggling. I kind of wish it was just me since it was such a bunch of nonsense, but glad we can all bond in the rant!
Stuff was never out of stock. I knew no one was actually able to check out, so i wasn’t worried. Once it started working again, I was able to get everything I wanted.
@@samplans I know girl! But since no one was able to check out, I knew it was probably just glitching. That’s why I just tried to ride it out and not stress too much. It was annoying definitely, but I know the hobonichi team was doing their best!
It was a nightmare as well for me. I went to jetpens and placed an order because everything I wanted was sold out. My cart emptied several times as well. I check again this morning and most of what I wanted was in stock. So I did end up placing my order at hobonichi, and was able to cancel my jetpens order in time. I really wanted the dark purple weeks mega in English. I spent over an hour trying to refresh my browser to try to checkout. I am there with you and the trauma the initial launch caused. But I am grateful I checked again this morning like you in hope that inventory would refresh.
It was horrible. I live in Brazil and it was 11 pm here. My husband also tried to help, but we gave up 1 hour latter. I woke up at 5 am and finaly was able to place my order. I've been using the weeks since 2017 and never had any issues. I hope they fix this for next year. Love your videos and looking forward for the unboxing.
Well, maybe not one single planner, but multiple books for me and my husband, the accessories that would cost and arm and a leg alone ordered elsewhere, and getting to experience multiple books in person is worth it to me!
Agree - and I love hobonichi - but have learned through experience that if I have “panic” to buy I need to step away, if it does sell out it wasn’t meant to be - plus they do tend to restock items and I can probably buy everything a little later before the start of the year - I have to tell myself “fight the FOMO”

I have months to get just a weeks which is what I really want as I order a wonderland 222 and at that point I was like i don’t care what weeks I get as long as I get one which I know I will and they restock but after my husband kept trying and got through I tried it again a few more times with zero expectations and got to order. Next year I’m not doing that again I will add stuff to favorites and wait a few hours after launch and try to order or wait till the next day. So not worth it for me and putting my family through it lol

So true - I feel like we are creating these requirements for planner acquisition and perfection that don’t need to be there - I fell hard down that rabbit hole a couple of years ago and I have worked to climb out of it - looking back on my behaviors I think it was a feeling that everything will be great when I get …. Fill in the blank I find that the “need to have” thoughts start circling in my brain and won’t let go - so am trying to make a very conscious decision that - for me - it is not worth having my mental/emotional health wrapped up in acquiring something - I can sense the desperation and fixation of my thought patterns and don’t like it - I don’t want to give a “thing” that kind of power over me - through life experience (a.k.a. the hard way) - and trust me I still struggle with it - but really trying to keep that “need to get” feeling minimized in my life. It crosses over to a lot of things - purses, clothes, shoes, make up - maybe it is just me, but it is a struggle across my life I appreciate Sam making this video and voicing her emotions and experience. She is not alone - but I found that her reaction and so many of the comments kind of cemented the ridiculousness of it all to me. I will most likely still get my beloved hobonichi and I will probably “agonize” over selection of which cover to get - but I don’t want to obsess over it. I am trying to intentionally wait until closer to the end of the year and maybe into the beginning of the new year before buying - I decided to stand back and wait this year All that to say… I think the release date was so hyped up and so many people were logging in and doing the same thing at the same time that they overloaded the system.
I do also want to mention-1. Hobonichi is the only brand of planner I’m buying this year. 2. I have a YT channel & people want to see unboxings at this time of year. If I didn’t have this channel I would have not been in such a rush or would have been happy to wait for a restock if needed.
It was my first time getting stuff at launch, and when I saw everything getting sold out I was so disheartened and bought the most neccesary items at the us based stores. The ones I really wanted at least! I was so taken a back by the rate of out of stock items. The next morning, I checked again it was all in stock! I was upset they made me go through all that! I dont plan on canceling my us orders tho. The stores that helped me deserve that sale lol.
My Yoseka order has already shipped, but I’m still a little salty they haven’t answered my email about why I was charged shipping. Hobonichi generally has fantastic customer service, so I’m sure they will learn from this.
I suspect part of it was to deter bots and scalpers, especially since some out of stock items were back this morning. There was also a typhoon and some crazy rain in Japan that could've affected servers.
I was there 15 mins before launch and my cart emptied 7 times after 3 hours of reloading I was finally able to get the stuff I wanted when they relisted all the sold out stuff.
Im glad that Im the oddball out. I dont get FOMO until I start to see all the unboxings. I dont know why but I dont buy new planners until the new year around February. What I wish I had better control over was my love of stickers 😂 cant wait to see all that you got 😊
@@samplans Honestly, even if I waited until February, I would still be wondering what I want....lol. Nereida is smart to wait. In my mind I need all of the planners in front of me to decide....lol. I think I am going to order the Weeks with a cover next month just because I want to carry it around and see if it's for me. Planner life is expensive for now. I hope to have it all figured out one day.
Lol the cart emptying multiple times was almost the END of me! I have no idea how many times I had to reload each individual item in my cart 😭 Looking back though, I kind of laugh at it all. Glad I was eventually able to place my order and get everything I wanted.
I was waiting for a video about this and you were the first one. YAY! Yes, it was crazy for me too. The same experience as you. I have never seen it that wicky wack! As soon as the items in my cart 'sold out' to below the free shipping level, I gave up... then was able to add them all back about an hour later but couldn't get through to pay due to the servers not responding... I finally gave up around 2am. Then when I got up this morning, and checked my cart out wondering what would still be available. All was there, signed in and payed via PayPal like it was nothing. So glad I got everything BUT yes, last night was very stressful.
Gave up after 3-4 attempts, but left my order page open… when I returned to it Sunday morning, my order went straight through in less than a minute - nothing I ordered was out of stock
It was a total nightmare!! I spent AN HOUR AND A HALF trying and failing to check out. I logged in at 3am UK time and was ready to check out by literally three minutes past 3. My basket kept emptying and it would come up with a message saying that item after item was sold out. I was so confused because I didn't think anything I wanted was that popular (e.g. the Ivory Slash A5 English HON), but basically everything I wanted ended up saying out of stock while I was trying to check out. In the end I gave up around 4:30am, managed to find the HON at a UK shop, and then went and essentially cried myself to sleep. Then this morning my planner friend messaged me and said everything was showing up as in stock. Huh???? So I managed to get everything in the end. What in the world was that about?
I know!! It was worse on my phone, at least things were showing out of stock on my husband’s laptop, and it would allow him to edit, just not actually checkout. Each time I tried to remove what it told him was out of stock, my entire cart emptied EVERY SINGLE TIME. So painful.
Same horrible experience and then gave up and tried again this morning. Everything went better but even though I checked my address twice when they confirmed my order they used my old address … so I don’t even know if I’ll get my order but it’s paid for😢
Ooh interesting - I was on my phone too and I had to refill my basket about 6 times before I finally gave up. It never occurred to me that all I had to do was go to sleep and order in the morning! Who would think of that??

I placed and order via a shop who goes on at launch and buys what we want. Shes stoic and got it all done while I slept! I then ordered an A6 cover and deco rush tapes from another UK stockist. Cant wait for your unboxing x
I'm so sorry for your bad experience; I thought I was the only one! Several things I wanted were 'out of stock', the repeatedly emptying cart, etc. and I finally went to bed furious. I tried today, no issues at all.
I had the same experience on Hobonichi lunch. And when my my shopping cart was emptied the third or fourth time, I gave up and went to sleep. The day after I tried again, and everything I wanted was there, I need not buy anything from other online vendors (no shop sells Hobonichi in my country). My very first Hobonichi purchase was last year, and then everything went so smoothly, I was surprised by this year's experience.
I'm so glad you mentioned that it said items were out of stock that were later in stock! I ended up panicking and spending an extra $40 to get my absolute essentials at one of the US-based shops, but then when I was finally able to place my order of the nice-to-haves at 3 a.m. EST, the items I had bought separately were all in stock and I felt kind of stupid for spending the extra money. But I could have sworn at least one of them went out of stock for me while I was waiting!
I’ve not seen any comment from Hobonichi, but I do know there is a typhoon that’s been basically sitting over Japan causing major flooding. Not sure if that caused any of the issues or not. I ordered locally via Atlas.
Exact same experience and I’ve been a “buy at launch time” diehard for 6 years now. Usually done in 15 minutes. Took 2.5 hours this time and had to reload my cart multiple times. One thing I wanted sold out. I’ve also never had to deal with that. My partner got multiple texts about how Hobonichi had me nearly choosing violence last night.
I don’t even want to talk about my experience, because I’ve been already anxious and cranky lately, and I responded completely irrationally to the whole server down and sold out issue. I wound up spending way, way more money than I intended at 3 different shops, and I’m very annoyed at myself. We can’t control outside circumstances but we can control how we react to them, and I definitely shifted a lot of stress and anxiety in my life onto the failures of the launch!
You were not alone on this. IMHO, this was unacceptable to both the consumers and the local shops. Perhaps next year, they need to release partial items on different days if they cannot handle the volume.
I’m so glad I wasn’t alone in the frustrations and profanities. After a few hours of trying and things ripped out of my cart when systems decided to work then everything I wanted was sold out. Tried again at midnight (5.5 hours later after launch) after calming down from hours of frustration and everything was back in stock and I had no issues. After 10+ years, I think this is the first time I was this frustrated with the Hobonichi website. It shouldn’t be so hard to use my hard earned money. 😂😂
Thank you for sharing your experience, I had the same issues! Did the same thing - was logged in and had my favourites ready to go and then - nada! Sever not working. I spent about 2-3 hours trying to check out as well. I laughed when you said you saw that the pistachio weeks was sold out was your last straw because that was mine as well! Hahaha 😂. I was sooo mad and unimpressed. I even left a comment on their IG about it lol. I ended up going to sleep as I refused to purchase from local shops to me because of the insane mark up. It’s just cheaper for me to purchase from hobonichi directly. I did get to a point where the site wasn’t emptying my cart anymore but still couldn’t check out so I gave up and went to sleep. I woke up randomly after 3am and decided to check the site. My cart was there with all the things I wanted originally and I was able to check out without issue! I was so happy but so drained from the experience. I did end up going back to my IG comment to let them know I was able to purchase and glad a fix was deployed. I just really really hope they take the lessons from this year’s launch into next year. Cuz this really was not a great experience at all. I really do not blame ppl if they jumped shipped from hobonichi as this experience was just a crazy one!
I had the same problem last night. This morning everything that said was out of stock was actually in stock. Placed my order with no problem and got everything I wanted.
I gave up after 3 hours. Just resigned myself to not getting what I wanted. Checked this morning and I was pleasantly surprised to see that everything I wanted was still available. Placed my order with no problem. 😀
I have ordered from Hobonichi on launch day for several years. Occasionally, I’ve had problems checking out, but not anything crazy that did not correct itself quickly. Last night? Whole different story. Items said sold out, cart emptied - all the same things as you. I ended up on Jetpens and purchased everything (I cut some stuff because my order was expensive). Woke up early this morning and checked Hobonichi to see if they were still having issues and everything worked!!!! I found I could cancel my Jetpens order because everything I wanted was available in the Hobo store. Not a huge deal, but I wanted the Hobo box and the “freebies.” Not sure what happened with their servers - I know from my work that our servers crash at the most inconvenient times. It was a hot mess, no doubt.
It certainly was a hot mess, and if I could figure out how to cancel Yoseka I would, only because of the “free shipping” fiasco. Not cool to advertise one thing and do another.
This was the first time I was going to order from Hobonichi and the whole experience was frustrating. I just went to jet pens and made sure I got the cover I really wanted, plus more stuff than I actually needed.
I fought with the Hobonichi website for 90 minutes, and then I gave up and ended up making purchases from both Yoseka and JetPens because no one had my full list in stock. Still have a couple of items I didn’t get, but I’m so angry about the website failure messing with my budget and my sanity. It’s my first ever launch, and it was not a good experience.😢
Same experience here and I was ready like you Sam with everything saved to my favorites. I am in CST, so I had it in my cart by 9:06 pm and got the same message. So it took me 4 HOURS of trying and re-adding everything to me cart again and again. I ended up sleeping right through church! The most frustrating part was not really the wait, I get that things happen but that it showed things sold out when they were not. I ended up buying less because I thought things were sold out but if I would have waited until morning I would have gotten it all. Luckily, the most important (and expensive) things I wanted were in stock. But I might do another order to Hobonichi, which I was trying to avoid. I find the mark up from retailers is so much that even with the shipping cost it I still come out less.
I was SO frustrated too and while I did have to go to Oblation Papers to get my 'Through the Night" Weeks (thank goodness) and I hopped on again on Sunday and actually got everything that had been "out of stock" on release night. I did have everything in my favorites and on release night, my cart got dumped 6 times! I was like you, I did all the things, to be ready lol. It was a dumpster fire for sure but thankfully the next day I got it all. Looking forward to the unboxing which is going to be my re-entry back to doing videos. So...hopefully Hobonichi figures out what went wrong and upgrade their servers. I have bought from the website on release day since 2016 and this was the first year that I had any issues at all. There were strings of curse words for sure lol.

I'm in computer science and it's always interesting when someone mentions and organic ddos situation (overwhelmed servers). I'm glad you managed to snatch most of the stuff you wanted despite all of it!
It honestly sounds like a frustrating experience. I read several posts about it yesterday. I am boring, so I ordered from Jetpens. Really, all I want are the books, so I quietly ordered my Cousin Avec books and had no issues. I guess boring has its payoff sometimes. 🤣I will be excited to see your unboxing when it arrives!
LOL, I will allow myself to laugh about it now but my story is much like yours except I gave up and went to bed after an hour and a half of trying. I did check out Jetpens and Yoseka but the mark up and lack of freebies felt like another punch in the gut. I was ordering for my sister as well and felt so sad for her. The next day, after church, I laid down for a nap. Thankfully, my dog jumped on the bed and woke me up. That’s when I saw the text from my sister, saying that there were things back in stock that had disappeared. This was around 2:30pm eastern time. So we both agreed to try again, and take the chance of our hearts being ripped out of our chests for a second time, he he. Things went smoothly. YAY!
I did the same thing you did: struggled for 4 HOURS (but 20 minutes in I caved and went to JetPens) before the site would let me check out with the few things I still wanted. I’m hoping I still get the pen :/
Thank you posting this! I was also caught in the Hobonichi disaster last night. I did the same and prepared my favorites. All the things. I ended up getting everything but not until late into the night. I really needed to hear someone else rant about it!! Very therapeutic for me. I’m looking forward to seeing what you picked. Wow! That’s too crazy.. I skip launch days for most vendors to avoid that panicking feeling. I’ll place my order later on this fall once I know exactly what I want.

I went through the same thing! I carefully planned what I would buy to meet the free shipping threshold. I watched as much of what I wanted to buy went out of stock. So I went to Atlas and bought what I wanted most. It was so frustrating! Then I woke up I saw almost everything I wanted to get was in stock. So I placed an order from Hobonichi without a problem. I too will sell what I don't want to keep. It's so fun to see the different covers in person.
Yes, that way I’m sure about which one I want to choose, and then others who don’t want to hassle with shopping on the site will get the freebies that the US shops don’t have!

Hi Sam.!! I’m so sorry you had such a frustrating experience.!! I’m doing it differently this year, I did not order anything from Hobonichi yet.!! I really wanted to think about which size planners. I really wanted this year. I’m retired now so I don’t think I’m going to get the A5. I don’t need that much space anymore for my journaling. However, my hand when I’m writing likes that size, but I think I’m going to try the A6 this year and of course I Have to my weeks, I do daily weather and plans for the day and then I use another weeks for my finances..! I’ve been using a Midori B6 slim for my daily food/health journal. Can’t wait to see your unboxing.!! Blessings Sam.!! 💖💖
I switched to Sterling Ink as the weeks size (N2) has more back pages for the entire year and sophisticated colors. Looking forward to placing my order 9/8!
OMGee same. I told myself I wasn't going to get a Hobonichi because I am really in love with my Sterling Inks, but I just couldn't resist the amazing designs. It was a crazy train but I couldn't sleep and checked again super early this AM and thankfully got all the things I wanted. Glad you got your goodies. Can't wait to see your haul!
I had the exact same experience! Was so prepared and did the favorites thing too. Kept hitting the Proceed to Checkout option ... for .... three hours. At an hour, I told myself that it was crazy to continue this. It's paper. But at that point, I wasn't just too worked up and angry. I finally gave up. Went to Atlas Stationers as I really wanted a Liberty Weeks - upset I had to pay the uncharge but I live by my Weeks. Tried to sleep at 1 AM and tossed and turned. Took me a good hour to settle down. My husband was up at 0430 so I checked the website. Everything I wanted so I went through and made the purchase. I had such a good experience last year. Remember it being so much fun. Was so looking forward to that too this year. The experience did have me reflect on the hype. Next year, no more rush at the start. I'll order in morning of the launch and just know I may not get all I want.
This hobonichi night was really crazy! As a European I set a timer in the night for 3.30 a.m. and locked in exactly at 4.00 and one second , put the most important items in my shopping card (these were all Hobonichi sold only), whereas my friend, who locked in 4 a.m. as well, wrote that she couldn’t get in , because the server was too busy. So I checked out 4.00 and 30 seconds and bought the three items (Piece , Paddington A5, Paddington A6) that I wanted the most, because I was scared that the same would happen for me and decided to buy the weeks, and other items in a German shop at 8 a.m. My friend and I I tried to get in and buy the items for her till 8.30 a.m. , but we finally got in at 8.30, meanwhile a lot of items seemed to be sold out and she couldn’t order what she wanted any more, and also didn’t reach the free shipping of 270 Euro and so bought items she didn’t even wanted. We then placed an order on the other items in a German shop a 8.30 , when suddenly a lot of items were back in stock? Like how ? So the "our of stock" was just a glitch in the website. But this was not the end. I went sleeping because I was so tired and when I woke up I got an email at 1 p.m. from Hobonichi, that my order from 4.00 a.m. got cancelled and I was asked to place a new order. I was soo stressed, if I would even get the three covers again, that I wanted so badly. Now in the end I could place the order again and got what I wanted, except I will not get a pen and also I missed on buying of a lot of accessories, as I was too scared to wait until everything is in my shopping card .
I went through all of that too. And the crazy part is that the main thing I wanted was the pretty flower washi tape. 😂 I did get a roll, and it did turn out to be one of the things that actually sold out, although it will probably come back in stock in October!

I'm in GA and did all the things just as you until 1:00 a.m. in the morning, too having to get up early for church. Then the morning lightbulb went off just as you, "what if" I am able to get into my Hobo ID that I set up weeks ago, then BOOM - Got my Cousin Techo and clear-stripped pouch. It was a disaster for me too! I’ve been ordering through the Hobonichi website for the last 5 years and this has never happened to me. I had all my items in the cart 3 minutes after 11pm and couldn’t check out for an hour and a half. I ended up ordering through 2 Canadian stores. Like you, I checked the website this morning and everything was back in stock. I cancelled my Canadian orders and ordered through Hobonichi. What a mess!! I hope they fix this next year!
Last year I ordered from the Hobonichi website with no problems... this year my cart would glitch and get emptied. I always shop adding everything to my Jetpens and Hobonichi carts because I like going through the checkout process and seeing what would be cheaper (FYI Hobonichi's website is always cheaper shipping included and all). Last night my Hobonichi order would have been WAYYYY cheaper than jet pens, but the weeks I wanted went out of stock in MINUTES! It literally went out of stock while it was IN my checkout cart!!! I panicked and ordered from Jetpens, but it definitely sucks cause I paid the beyond inflated price. I am glad I got everything I wanted, but bummed that I overpaid severely.
Yes, that’s so painful! Unfortunately, Hobonichi likely got your planner back “in stock”. JP and Hobonichi used to be a little more in line as far as pricing, but it’s quite a bit more now.
@@samplans Went to the website and the Weeks I wanted came back in stock, literally five minutes ago (I've been checking throughout the day). Was able to cancel my Jetpens order and order from Hobonichi (about $40 cheaper), so happy!!! This year was insane!!

I had the exact same Hobonichi “experience”. However at 6am EST the next day, I was able to order everything that was “sold out” the night before. BUT many of the items I ordered will ship in approx 10 days vs the 1-3 day timeframe.
Oh Sam! My heart breaks for you! I ordered on Sunday and had no problems by I over ordered as well. Every year!!!!! If you didn’t get something you wanted I’m happy to check my order and forward to you. It’s mostly planners and notebooks. But I do not need 5 planners!!!!!
I had the same issue, and sadly the Paddington weeks was out of stock so I quit. I figured it wasn't meant be, moving on to a different planner company.
Ahhhh, this struggle happened to me tooo!! The launch was 3am UK time, usually I just get up in the morning after the launch and just buy what is left, there's so many covers so I always get one I like. - THIS YEAR however, they announce the SpyxFamily collection and as a huge fan I instantly knew it had to be that one! So I made the poor choice to be awake for this mess, also went through this madness of crashed sites and empty carts, by 4am I had to give up (found a UK stockist). Whew! Hobonichi was NOT ready for that launch. The Hobonichi wave gets stronger every year. I was saddened by free shipping moving from 250$ to 300$ 😬. My cart emptied once and I was done.

Oh wow, I had no idea all that was going on with the Hobo launch! I must have hit the right time, I happened to order early Sunday morning (also in Eastern time). I hadn’t ordered from Hobonichi in several years actually, because I’ve only been getting the weeks but I need a new 5 year planner and was shocked at the price difference, holy cow. So I did the same thing as you, ordered all I wanted (enough to get free shipping 😮) and got a few extras knowing I’ll sell them (since I’ve been on a Mercari selling/purging tear anyway). #2) Right there with you on preferring to stay home, petting my cats, just chilling 😅 #3) Seeing Twisters tomorrow, so glad to know it’s good (TLDR - husband and I had debated between Twisters and Wolverine/Deadpool last week, unfortunately decided on Deadpool 🤦♀️ I knew nothing about Deadpool - yikes - the fact it was rated R should have tipped me off. Oh mercy. Horrible. Thankfully it was the “cheap ticket” night because 3 minutes in I knew we’d made the wrong choice! Lesson learned 😅)

OMG! The exact same thing happened to me. I tried for 1 1/2 hours and watched all the things in my cart go out of stock. I finally went to Atlas Stationery and was able to get all the planners I wanted except the one Weeks I really wanted Yumi Kitagishi Beautiful Wallpaper. I woke up this morning and was able to get that one on Amazon. I was like you and had everything favorited and was ready to go, so frustrating.
This is my first time buying into the hobonichi brand. I was already a little overwhelmed with having to make planner decisions in august, so I made the conscious decision to not buy on release day. . . . however, after hearing about all the panic, I decided to avoid the website and buy my few essentials from atlas stationers instead. A bummer since the main site's prices are better, but at least there's some comfort in knowing I got the items. I also decided to hold off on getting my weeks for another month or so. Hopefully it won't feel so weird to me buying for 2025 then. I really like the chili pepper red and I'm assuming that that one won't sell out because no one seems to be excited about that color but me, lol. My one gripe is that if Hobonichi planned to build this hype around their products, along with the scarcity they created by having less inventory (presumably by how quickly certain items sold out), that they DEFINITELY should have boosted their server capacity for this launch specifically. They knew there would be a lot of traffic on their site on release day. It was poor logistics planning, in my opinion.
I agree, poor planning or something went wrong. They’ve been popular for years now, and I think they’ve honestly had better releases than this one, but the experience was much better. I’m sure they will fix whatever went wrong. And yes, it DOES feel weird to buy a planner in August/September!
Oh yeah. And all I wanted was a Paddington Weeks and pencil board. 😂 I took at as a challenge and I wasn’t going to lose. 😅 Finally got it ordered almost 4 hours after launch. 🤪
Same experience here, so I gave up and ordered everything I wanted from Yoseka.....I watched part of their watch party and then placed my order at 10 pm...I will re- think ordering Hobonichi in 2026 because of their server issues....,come on and get it right!!!!
I realized that I only need the weeks mega and some cute accessories. So i'm lucky to get what I needed from Amazon. Sorry you had to go through all that. Glad you were able to get most of what you wanted the next day. Yay!!!!
I order 2 items sometimes 4 every year. I order a A6 and a weeks . I get A weeks cover and sometimes order an A6 cover. This year it was 3 items. Everything I wanted was on AMAZON. I am a prime member so no shipping fees. I can not stand Hobonichi’s web sight. It sends my anxiety through the roof! I don’t do bright colors. So I always look for the most neutral earthy color. I got a gray Weeks this year. I did get the Dogs in the wind cover it is very cute!
I have been having a weird time with my planners the last 2 or 3 years, so I banned myself from getting Hobonichi this year, and your experience just confirms I did the right thing. Sorry you had such a hard time! I wanna say I went through a smaller version of what you're mentioning last year, where it happened a couple times, and then my card wouldn't working, so I had to use my husband's, and then I ended up ordering again when they restocked the little things cover. Too much money spent on planners and accessories last year with too little use to justify getting anything this year (there were 2 of the weeks that ALMOST got me, but I stayed strong, lol)

Happened to me also. I gave up after 30 min of struggle. The next morning, like 12 hours later, I logged on to see how much was out of stock after so much had been in the first 30 minutes. And all the stuff I wanted that was out of stock was available. I made an order...not even sure what I ordered as I was so confused and felt like I had to go fast to not lose items. Hopefully, it will actually come. I feel like it could not actually be a real order??!!!
Oh man, that sucks that the cart kept emptying. I had it in my head that I only need a weeks so I ordered from Yoseka as well. They charged me shipping too! It did say there would be free shipping over $40. This morning I checked Amazon and they have everything with prime shipping (ordered a second weeks 😮)
I was there with you with my husband was also trying to do emotional support … I thought it was going to go so smooth favorited everything done 5 minutes in and went to check-out and nope :( after over an hour I was almost in tears (I know over dramatic) I finally at around 11:30 once all the cousins showed out of stock I was able to get an order yoseca and then getting up this morning the Hobonichi store appeared to have everything again I didn’t know what to think. I wish they would have done a better job communicating with everyone, I feel like tells us more would have helped the panic.
Yes!! Unfortunately I couldn’t stay up any longer, and was thankful Yoseka had something in stock for me. I just felt so sad going to bed without an order. 😩
I ended up not being able to get anything that I wanted to order as I sat at the Hobonichi store trying to get through for an hour and a half with most everything in my cart going out of stock while I tried to get through. And then they just closed access to the store entirely. I had wanted to get a cousin with one of the 2025 covers but ended up having to go to a US reseller store and buying what was left over and available, a HON, just to have a planner for next year and I had to pay a $40 up-charge for that HON. This whole experience has really soured me on Hobonichi as a whole and I may look for another companies planner as an alternative in the future just to not have to deal with this same mess next year.
ughhhh I stayed for the launch, it was my first time buying tbh. I was so angry LOL It was like 4am in Poland, so I was half asleep for staying all night. Then I was like nahhh, and went to buy from our polish retailer (Escribo - if someone wants to check it out, they ship international, so maybe they have some things you wanted :D) And yeah, I got hobo original a6, weeks, some pencil boards and stickers and the package was in my hands like in 2 days. Thats the plus, mayybe it was overpriced, but it ended up to be the same cuz the shipping was free :)
i had the same it was 3am here in the UK when it opened up i stayed up till 5.30am then gave up as half of the stuff i wanted went out off stock so i had to get my last choices at 5pm that day as i got so upset which isnt like them so will have to wait till they get stock in
All the hobonichi FB groups went crazy. I was only going to get 1 weeks so going through hobonichi website did not make sense with shipping. I was logged in jetpens like right before 10pm. Grabbed the Through the purple night weeks. Checked out by 10:01pm. I was lucky because of the hobonichi website crash turned people to rush like a frenzy to US retailers. And jetpens sold out for that one within minutes. Then yoseka sold out. It was insane. People were so frustrated. They missed out on the one they wanted especially that yellow cover and the bear weeks.
So sad I think everyone was having the same problem. I believe most of the shopping was all the stores in the USA were able to shop. I had to keep filling my cart many times. The only one planner I was not able to get was a Weeks that was sold out on every site. Hope in Oct 1 it will be like years ago. Thank you for your video hugs from me
Same to me. When I realize the Hobo website is too busy, I immediately went to Yoseka to buy the covers I want although it’s more expensive than original price.
I almost did the same thing but every item I wanted was marked up $20 more than Hobonichi’s prices. I do get that they have to make a profit and all of the US retailers have about the same prices. But my shipping from Hobonichi was very reasonable so I save money.
I did the same for the core items I felt would sell out. At least we’re supporting a great small business. I’m ordering a couple of One Piece 10/1 items so I’ll get some other items then.
Omg! Glad to know I wasn’t the only one! This was my first time ordering from Hobonichi and it kept losing connection with the server! I ended up ordering the Techo and Avec from Jet Pens. I waited until the morning to order a couple more small things from Hobonichi on Amazon because they wouldn’t be enough to justify spending for shipping from Hononichi, Jet Pens, or anywhere else.
Sorry to hear the launch was so crazy. I'm glad in the end you were able to get the items you wanted. I tried ordering from hobonichi years ago and had issues with my card not working because it was an international purchase and I had to talk with someone at the credit card company. Then my order was held up for weeks because I had to pay import fees. I decided I didn't want to go through that again so I just paid more and went through jet pens and plant paper to get what I wanted. I look forward to your unboxing. AAlso I'm jealous you are able to do HRT i can't because I'm a breast cancer survivor. I've had hot flashes and other symptoms going on 20 years now due to being put into menopause at age 35.

Idk if this is frowned in the hobonichi world but I only wanted one of the weeks and an A6HON so I ordered from Amazon. Both of them. I didn’t have any issues and I know shipping from hobonichi can be expensive which is part of the reason why I did this. The other reason is my credit card gets cash back from Amazon so I have been trying to buy most things from Amazon if I can. I’m sorry you and everyone else had such a rough time with this. I guess it’s expected when you’re buying from a brand that’s so popular on release day. Also, I bought my stuff September 2 and not the 1st so that could also be why I had no issues.
If I had a small order I would have 100% done the same!! This is only the second year, if memory serves, that other shops have had stock on release day. It makes Hobonichi much more accessible!!
Same happened to me... 💔 I wanted to secure gifts for my boyfriend and a friend at launch with the freebies (I'm using an older edition Weeks for next year. I wasn't a big fan of this year's lineup). 😢 Ended up ordering from Jetpens and some exclusive stuff directly from Hobonichi later. I wasn't taking any chances. I was at the cart 10PM-4AM. Soooo shocked how awful this year's launch was handled!! In light of this, at least it made me rethink how much I should get each year. 😅
Same sentiment about the launch. Wound up getting my items from Yoseka (which is local to me b/ seeing my cousin Avec for double the price was heartbreaking). I wanted the freebies so I placed 301.95 worth of items in my cart at hobonichi. I was bummed the server was down & my cart got emptied multiple times BUT hours later, I'm content w/ getting my items sans freebies- I spent less & put it towards my Kokuyo order this afternoon. All in all, money saved & I'm gonna get stationary storage on Amazon 😅
The same thing happened to me 😢 I wound-up purchasing at Yoseka and JetPens and then went to Hobonichi yesterday to get the rest. The only thing I missed out on was the Paddington Weeks. I’ll try again when they have the One Piece release in October 🥰
I just avoided the whole hobonichi launch this year. I didn’t even peek because I know I would have FOMO. I purchased my 2025 cousin from Jenni Blick. I purchased a couple of accessories from jet pens. And I’ll probably just buy my weeks from Amazon. I don’t have the time, patience or desire for these marketing frenzies trying to shop online at the same time everyone else does. And from what I’ve seen so far, I’m so glad I avoided all of that because there’s really nothing in the lineup that I feel I missed out on. I’m also getting heavy duty marketing emails, like sometimes several a day., from a planner brand that I purchased last year. I don’t know if I’m purchasing it this year, but man are they hounding me. And actually last year I didn’t buy the planner until halfway through the year when it was on sale and I wanted to just give the layout a try. So even though they keep sending me marketing mail saying, if you don’t purchase now, you’re gonna lose out on your favorite color, I know that’s not really true because there were plenty left in 2024 halfway through the year. And if I don’t get my preferred planner cover color, it is not the end of the world. Over on the Sterling Ink Facebook group I cannot believe the people whining because at the launch they didn’t score their favorite color cover. OK I get it. She launched a burgundy cover this year that is just stunning, especially if paired with the gold edges. But my goodness the way people are carrying on over a $35 passport size planner that they couldn’t get in burgundy when there were three or four other beautiful color choices, it’s just beyond me. Don’t people realize that these launches and limited, or so-called limited items are meant to create a marketing frenzy. I’m just over it lol
I’ve unsubscribed from almost every single company. The marketing emails are out of control for many of them. What makes them think that an email multiple times a day is acceptable?! I’m glad you only got what you wanted for 2025!! My order will finally be here in a couple of days. I’m excited to finally make my final choice for which Weeks will be the one.
OMG, it happened to me too. My cart was emptied several times too. I ended up being so frustrated that I went to Yoseka and at least got my A6 Hon Hiroko Kubota -Crescent Moon. As I recently lost my job, I am very cautious about my planner shopping and trying to rein myself in, which is hard but necessary to do! Even though I had other things I wanted to purchase, I have decided the Hon is all I'm getting right now.

Same here. It was my first time trying to order on the Hobonichi website. I got frustrated - even staying up until 2 am Central - and went to Jet Pens. I got what I needed plus a few extra pens from them instead. IDK why Hobonichi dropped the ball this year.
I woke up with a “Hobonichi hangover” this morning thinking, “What have I done?”. I had 4 orders in with 3 different places and spent way more than I had intended. Regrets! Instead of feeling good about my purchases, I felt sick. I know it’s was my own fault for thinking I needed to have my stuff on day one (FOMO queen, here). I canceled everything and put in one order with Hobonichi and it came to about $200 less.
That’s exactly what I said to my husband this morning, that I had a Hobonichi hangover! I didn’t wind canceling my 3 different orders with 2 different stores, but did wind up placing a 4th order with Hobonichi directly the next morning for the items only on the Hobonichi site, and of course paying for shipping because I no longer met the minimum, and way overpaying at the other two stores. Argh!
Honestly, I’d cancel my Yoseka order if I could figure out how!

I’ve been ordering from them since 2014 and have found that waiting until the day after launch has always worked really well. I’ve never found anything I wanted was out of stock the day after. I placed a large order today and everything was available!
My one “late” order an hour later did result in what I wanted being out of stock. That keeps me coming back at launch time. I’ll still be there at launch time next year, and hope for a better outcome. 😅

That’s not exactly how it was. For example last year the little gifts cover sold out in minutes after the release. Also the blue tambourine some years before as well.

I struggled too! But my “what the…” reaction wasn’t as church friendly. My hubby also tried to help; he was shocked at how much trouble I had. He’s used to me gliding effortlessly through the process even when others had trouble. But not last night. I finally got it to work at 2 am. 3 am your time.

Yeah, such a frustrating experience!! I wasn’t on social media…because it was late and then church, so I missed that others were also struggling. I kind of wish it was just me since it was such a bunch of nonsense, but glad we can all bond in the rant!
Stuff was never out of stock. I knew no one was actually able to check out, so i wasn’t worried. Once it started working again, I was able to get everything I wanted.
But the website kept SAYING the items were out of stock. Each time it dumped my cart, less and less was available!
@@samplans I know girl! But since no one was able to check out, I knew it was probably just glitching. That’s why I just tried to ride it out and not stress too much. It was annoying definitely, but I know the hobonichi team was doing their best!
It was a nightmare as well for me. I went to jetpens and placed an order because everything I wanted was sold out. My cart emptied several times as well. I check again this morning and most of what I wanted was in stock. So I did end up placing my order at hobonichi, and was able to cancel my jetpens order in time. I really wanted the dark purple weeks mega in English. I spent over an hour trying to refresh my browser to try to checkout. I am there with you and the trauma the initial launch caused. But I am grateful I checked again this morning like you in hope that inventory would refresh.

It was horrible. I live in Brazil and it was 11 pm here. My husband also tried to help, but we gave up 1 hour latter. I woke up at 5 am and finaly was able to place my order. I've been using the weeks since 2017 and never had any issues. I hope they fix this for next year. Love your videos and looking forward for the unboxing.

Well, maybe not one single planner, but multiple books for me and my husband, the accessories that would cost and arm and a leg alone ordered elsewhere, and getting to experience multiple books in person is worth it to me!
Agree - and I love hobonichi - but have learned through experience that if I have “panic” to buy I need to step away, if it does sell out it wasn’t meant to be - plus they do tend to restock items and I can probably buy everything a little later before the start of the year - I have to tell myself “fight the FOMO”

I have months to get just a weeks which is what I really want as I order a wonderland 222 and at that point I was like i don’t care what weeks I get as long as I get one which I know I will and they restock but after my husband kept trying and got through I tried it again a few more times with zero expectations and got to order. Next year I’m not doing that again I will add stuff to favorites and wait a few hours after launch and try to order or wait till the next day. So not worth it for me and putting my family through it lol

So true - I feel like we are creating these requirements for planner acquisition and perfection that don’t need to be there - I fell hard down that rabbit hole a couple of years ago and I have worked to climb out of it - looking back on my behaviors I think it was a feeling that everything will be great when I get …. I find that the “need to have” thoughts start circling in my brain and won’t let go - so am trying to make a very conscious decision that - for me - it is not worth having my mental/emotional health wrapped up in acquiring something - I can sense the desperation and fixation of my thought patterns and don’t like it - I don’t want to give a “thing” that kind of power over me - through life experience (a.k.a. the hard way) - and trust me I still struggle with it - but really trying to keep that “need to get” feeling minimized in my life. It crosses over to a lot of things - purses, clothes, shoes, make up - maybe it is just me, but it is a struggle across my life
I appreciate Sam making this video and voicing her emotions and experience. She is not alone - but I found that her reaction and so many of the comments kind of cemented the ridiculousness of it all to me. I will most likely still get my beloved hobonichi and I will probably “agonize” over selection of which cover to get - but I don’t want to obsess over it. I am trying to intentionally wait until closer to the end of the year and maybe into the beginning of the new year before buying - I decided to stand back and wait this year
All that to say… I think the release date was so hyped up and so many people were logging in and doing the same thing at the same time that they overloaded the system.
I do also want to mention-1. Hobonichi is the only brand of planner I’m buying this year. 2. I have a YT channel & people want to see unboxings at this time of year. If I didn’t have this channel I would have not been in such a rush or would have been happy to wait for a restock if needed.
It was my first time getting stuff at launch, and when I saw everything getting sold out I was so disheartened and bought the most neccesary items at the us based stores. The ones I really wanted at least! I was so taken a back by the rate of out of stock items. The next morning, I checked again it was all in stock! I was upset they made me go through all that! I dont plan on canceling my us orders tho. The stores that helped me deserve that sale lol.
My Yoseka order has already shipped, but I’m still a little salty they haven’t answered my email about why I was charged shipping. Hobonichi generally has fantastic customer service, so I’m sure they will learn from this.
I suspect part of it was to deter bots and scalpers, especially since some out of stock items were back this morning. There was also a typhoon and some crazy rain in Japan that could've affected servers.

I was there 15 mins before launch and my cart emptied 7 times after 3 hours of reloading I was finally able to get the stuff I wanted when they relisted all the sold out stuff.
Also scalpers got in and bought a bunch of products and immediately listed on eBay for 4 times the price

Lol the cart emptying multiple times was almost the END of me! I have no idea how many times I had to reload each individual item in my cart 😭 Looking back though, I kind of laugh at it all. Glad I was eventually able to place my order and get everything I wanted.

I was waiting for a video about this and you were the first one. YAY! Yes, it was crazy for me too. The same experience as you. I have never seen it that wicky wack! As soon as the items in my cart 'sold out' to below the free shipping level, I gave up... then was able to add them all back about an hour later but couldn't get through to pay due to the servers not responding... I finally gave up around 2am. Then when I got up this morning, and checked my cart out wondering what would still be available. All was there, signed in and payed via PayPal like it was nothing. So glad I got everything BUT yes, last night was very stressful.
Unfortunately my cart wasn’t still there and I had to add it all again. What a wild ride. 😅

It was a total nightmare!! I spent AN HOUR AND A HALF trying and failing to check out. I logged in at 3am UK time and was ready to check out by literally three minutes past 3. My basket kept emptying and it would come up with a message saying that item after item was sold out. I was so confused because I didn't think anything I wanted was that popular (e.g. the Ivory Slash A5 English HON), but basically everything I wanted ended up saying out of stock while I was trying to check out. In the end I gave up around 4:30am, managed to find the HON at a UK shop, and then went and essentially cried myself to sleep. Then this morning my planner friend messaged me and said everything was showing up as in stock. Huh???? So I managed to get everything in the end. What in the world was that about?
I know!! It was worse on my phone, at least things were showing out of stock on my husband’s laptop, and it would allow him to edit, just not actually checkout. Each time I tried to remove what it told him was out of stock, my entire cart emptied EVERY SINGLE TIME. So painful.
Same horrible experience and then gave up and tried again this morning. Everything went better but even though I checked my address twice when they confirmed my order they used my old address … so I don’t even know if I’ll get my order but it’s paid for😢
Ooh interesting - I was on my phone too and I had to refill my basket about 6 times before I finally gave up. It never occurred to me that all I had to do was go to sleep and order in the morning! Who would think of that??

I had the same experience on Hobonichi lunch. And when my my shopping cart was emptied the third or fourth time, I gave up and went to sleep. The day after I tried again, and everything I wanted was there, I need not buy anything from other online vendors (no shop sells Hobonichi in my country). My very first Hobonichi purchase was last year, and then everything went so smoothly, I was surprised by this year's experience.

I'm so glad you mentioned that it said items were out of stock that were later in stock! I ended up panicking and spending an extra $40 to get my absolute essentials at one of the US-based shops, but then when I was finally able to place my order of the nice-to-haves at 3 a.m. EST, the items I had bought separately were all in stock and I felt kind of stupid for spending the extra money. But I could have sworn at least one of them went out of stock for me while I was waiting!
I had 4 or 5 things go out of stock before my eyes…all to magically be in stock again. And it was true on my phone AND my husband on the laptop!
I’ve not seen any comment from
Hobonichi, but I do know there is a typhoon that’s been basically sitting over Japan causing major flooding. Not sure if that caused any of the issues or not. I ordered locally via Atlas.
Their newsletter mentioned the server was overwhelmed but nothing about a storm.
Exact same experience and I’ve been a “buy at launch time” diehard for 6 years now. Usually done in 15 minutes. Took 2.5 hours this time and had to reload my cart multiple times. One thing I wanted sold out. I’ve also never had to deal with that. My partner got multiple texts about how Hobonichi had me nearly choosing violence last night.

I don’t even want to talk about my experience, because I’ve been already anxious and cranky lately, and I responded completely irrationally to the whole server down and sold out issue. I wound up spending way, way more money than I intended at 3 different shops, and I’m very annoyed at myself. We can’t control outside circumstances but we can control how we react to them, and I definitely shifted a lot of stress and anxiety in my life onto the failures of the launch!

You were not alone on this. IMHO, this was unacceptable to both the consumers and the local shops. Perhaps next year, they need to release partial items on different days if they cannot handle the volume.
I’m so glad I wasn’t alone in the frustrations and profanities. After a few hours of trying and things ripped out of my cart when systems decided to work then everything I wanted was sold out. Tried again at midnight (5.5 hours later after launch) after calming down from hours of frustration and everything was back in stock and I had no issues. After 10+ years, I think this is the first time I was this frustrated with the Hobonichi website. It shouldn’t be so hard to use my hard earned money. 😂😂

I laughed when you said you saw that the pistachio weeks was sold out was your last straw because that was mine as well! Hahaha 😂. I was sooo mad and unimpressed. I even left a comment on their IG about it lol. I ended up going to sleep as I refused to purchase from local shops to me because of the insane mark up. It’s just cheaper for me to purchase from hobonichi directly. I did get to a point where the site wasn’t emptying my cart anymore but still couldn’t check out so I gave up and went to sleep.
I woke up randomly after 3am and decided to check the site. My cart was there with all the things I wanted originally and I was able to check out without issue! I was so happy but so drained from the experience. I did end up going back to my IG comment to let them know I was able to purchase and glad a fix was deployed. I just really really hope they take the lessons from this year’s launch into next year. Cuz this really was not a great experience at all. I really do not blame ppl if they jumped shipped from hobonichi as this experience was just a crazy one!

I had the same problem last night. This morning everything that said was out of stock was actually in stock. Placed my order with no problem and got everything I wanted.
Hopefully whatever went wrong won’t ever repeat again.

I gave up after 3 hours. Just resigned myself to not getting what I wanted. Checked this morning and I was pleasantly surprised to see that everything I wanted was still available. Placed my order with no problem. 😀

I have ordered from Hobonichi on launch day for several years. Occasionally, I’ve had problems checking out, but not anything crazy that did not correct itself quickly. Last night? Whole different story. Items said sold out, cart emptied - all the same things as you. I ended up on Jetpens and purchased everything (I cut some stuff because my order was expensive). Woke up early this morning and checked Hobonichi to see if they were still having issues and everything worked!!!! I found I could cancel my Jetpens order because everything I wanted was available in the Hobo store. Not a huge deal, but I wanted the Hobo box and the “freebies.” Not sure what happened with their servers - I know from my work that our servers crash at the most inconvenient times. It was a hot mess, no doubt.
It certainly was a hot mess, and if I could figure out how to cancel Yoseka I would, only because of the “free shipping” fiasco. Not cool to advertise one thing and do another.
This was the first time I was going to order from Hobonichi and the whole experience was frustrating. I just went to jet pens and made sure I got the cover I really wanted, plus more stuff than I actually needed.
JP is fast and easy to shop, I love them!
I fought with the Hobonichi website for 90 minutes, and then I gave up and ended up making purchases from both Yoseka and JetPens because no one had my full list in stock. Still have a couple of items I didn’t get, but I’m so angry about the website failure messing with my budget and my sanity. It’s my first ever launch, and it was not a good experience.😢

Same experience here and I was ready like you Sam with everything saved to my favorites. I am in CST, so I had it in my cart by 9:06 pm and got the same message. So it took me 4 HOURS of trying and re-adding everything to me cart again and again. I ended up sleeping right through church! The most frustrating part was not really the wait, I get that things happen but that it showed things sold out when they were not. I ended up buying less because I thought things were sold out but if I would have waited until morning I would have gotten it all. Luckily, the most important (and expensive) things I wanted were in stock. But I might do another order to Hobonichi, which I was trying to avoid. I find the mark up from retailers is so much that even with the shipping cost it I still come out less.
I agree, the pricing used to be a little better in line with 1101. I’m glad you mostly got what you wanted. Hopefully you’ll be able to get the rest.
I was SO frustrated too and while I did have to go to Oblation Papers to get my 'Through the Night" Weeks (thank goodness) and I hopped on again on Sunday and actually got everything that had been "out of stock" on release night. I did have everything in my favorites and on release night, my cart got dumped 6 times! I was like you, I did all the things, to be ready lol. It was a dumpster fire for sure but thankfully the next day I got it all. Looking forward to the unboxing which is going to be my re-entry back to doing videos. So...hopefully Hobonichi figures out what went wrong and upgrade their servers. I have bought from the website on release day since 2016 and this was the first year that I had any issues at all. There were strings of curse words for sure lol.

It honestly sounds like a frustrating experience. I read several posts about it yesterday. I am boring, so I ordered from Jetpens. Really, all I want are the books, so I quietly ordered my Cousin Avec books and had no issues. I guess boring has its payoff sometimes. 🤣I will be excited to see your unboxing when it arrives!

LOL, I will allow myself to laugh about it now but my story is much like yours except I gave up and went to bed after an hour and a half of trying. I did check out Jetpens and Yoseka but the mark up and lack of freebies felt like another punch in the gut. I was ordering for my sister as well and felt so sad for her. The next day, after church, I laid down for a nap. Thankfully, my dog jumped on the bed and woke me up. That’s when I saw the text from my sister, saying that there were things back in stock that had disappeared. This was around 2:30pm eastern time. So we both agreed to try again, and take the chance of our hearts being ripped out of our chests for a second time, he he. Things went smoothly. YAY!
It was all the emotions and disappointment for nothing. Glad most of us seem to have gotten most of what we wanted.
I did the same thing you did: struggled for 4 HOURS (but 20 minutes in I caved and went to JetPens) before the site would let me check out with the few things I still wanted. I’m hoping I still get the pen :/

I went through the same thing! I carefully planned what I would buy to meet the free shipping threshold. I watched as much of what I wanted to buy went out of stock. So I went to Atlas and bought what I wanted most. It was so frustrating! Then I woke up I saw almost everything I wanted to get was in stock. So I placed an order from Hobonichi without a problem. I too will sell what I don't want to keep. It's so fun to see the different covers in person.
Yes, that way I’m sure about which one I want to choose, and then others who don’t want to hassle with shopping on the site will get the freebies that the US shops don’t have!

I really wanted this year. I’m retired now so I don’t think I’m going to get the A5. I don’t need that much space anymore for my journaling. However, my hand when I’m writing likes that size, but I think I’m going to try the A6 this year and of course I Have to my weeks, I do daily weather and plans for the day and then I use another weeks for my finances..! I’ve been using a Midori B6 slim for my daily food/health journal. Can’t wait to see your unboxing.!! Blessings Sam.!! 💖💖

OMGee same. I told myself I wasn't going to get a Hobonichi because I am really in love with my Sterling Inks, but I just couldn't resist the amazing designs. It was a crazy train but I couldn't sleep and checked again super early this AM and thankfully got all the things I wanted. Glad you got your goodies. Can't wait to see your haul!

I had the exact same experience! Was so prepared and did the favorites thing too. Kept hitting the Proceed to Checkout option ... for .... three hours. At an hour, I told myself that it was crazy to continue this. It's paper. But at that point, I wasn't just too worked up and angry. I finally gave up. Went to Atlas Stationers as I really wanted a Liberty Weeks - upset I had to pay the uncharge but I live by my Weeks. Tried to sleep at 1 AM and tossed and turned. Took me a good hour to settle down. My husband was up at 0430 so I checked the website. Everything I wanted so I went through and made the purchase.
I had such a good experience last year. Remember it being so much fun. Was so looking forward to that too this year. The experience did have me reflect on the hype. Next year, no more rush at the start. I'll order in morning of the launch and just know I may not get all I want.

This hobonichi night was really crazy! As a European I set a timer in the night for 3.30 a.m. and locked in exactly at 4.00 and one second , put the most important items in my shopping card (these were all Hobonichi sold only), whereas my friend, who locked in 4 a.m. as well, wrote that she couldn’t get in , because the server was too busy. So I checked out 4.00 and 30 seconds and bought the three items (Piece , Paddington A5, Paddington A6) that I wanted the most, because I was scared that the same would happen for me and decided to buy the weeks, and other items in a German shop at 8 a.m.
My friend and I I tried to get in and buy the items for her till 8.30 a.m. , but we finally got in at 8.30, meanwhile a lot of items seemed to be sold out and she couldn’t order what she wanted any more, and also didn’t reach the free shipping of 270 Euro and so bought items she didn’t even wanted.
We then placed an order on the other items in a German shop a 8.30 , when suddenly a lot of items were back in stock? Like how ? So the "our of stock" was just a glitch in the website.
But this was not the end. I went sleeping because I was so tired and when I woke up I got an email at 1 p.m. from Hobonichi, that my order from 4.00 a.m. got cancelled and I was asked to place a new order. I was soo stressed, if I would even get the three covers again, that I wanted so badly. Now in the end I could place the order again and got what I wanted, except I will not get a pen and also I missed on buying of a lot of accessories, as I was too scared to wait until everything is in my shopping card .

I went through all of that too. And the crazy part is that the main thing I wanted was the pretty flower washi tape. 😂 I did get a roll, and it did turn out to be one of the things that actually sold out, although it will probably come back in stock in October!

It was a disaster for me too! I’ve been ordering through the Hobonichi website for the last 5 years and this has never happened to me. I had all my items in the cart 3 minutes after 11pm and couldn’t check out for an hour and a half. I ended up ordering through 2 Canadian stores. Like you, I checked the website this morning and everything was back in stock. I cancelled my Canadian orders and ordered through Hobonichi. What a mess!! I hope they fix this next year!

Last year I ordered from the Hobonichi website with no problems... this year my cart would glitch and get emptied. I always shop adding everything to my Jetpens and Hobonichi carts because I like going through the checkout process and seeing what would be cheaper (FYI Hobonichi's website is always cheaper shipping included and all). Last night my Hobonichi order would have been WAYYYY cheaper than jet pens, but the weeks I wanted went out of stock in MINUTES! It literally went out of stock while it was IN my checkout cart!!! I panicked and ordered from Jetpens, but it definitely sucks cause I paid the beyond inflated price. I am glad I got everything I wanted, but bummed that I overpaid severely.
Yes, that’s so painful! Unfortunately, Hobonichi likely got your planner back “in stock”. JP and Hobonichi used to be a little more in line as far as pricing, but it’s quite a bit more now.

Was able to cancel my Jetpens order and order from Hobonichi (about $40 cheaper), so happy!!! This year was insane!!

No, the one is from Planner Monkey Co, I forget where the small book was from. Lots of shops have them now.
I had the exact same Hobonichi “experience”. However at 6am EST the next day, I was able to order everything that was “sold out” the night before. BUT many of the items I ordered will ship in approx 10 days vs the 1-3 day timeframe.
There were different timeframes?!

Ahhhh, this struggle happened to me tooo!! The launch was 3am UK time, usually I just get up in the morning after the launch and just buy what is left, there's so many covers so I always get one I like. - THIS YEAR however, they announce the SpyxFamily collection and as a huge fan I instantly knew it had to be that one! So I made the poor choice to be awake for this mess, also went through this madness of crashed sites and empty carts, by 4am I had to give up (found a UK stockist). Could not believe when I woke up later at 10am everything was back in stock haha! Shall not be doing this again, will just have to do the usual and see what's left next year :"D

I was saddened by free shipping moving from 250$ to 300$ 😬. My cart emptied once and I was done.

Oh wow, I had no idea all that was going on with the Hobo launch! I must have hit the right time, I happened to order early Sunday morning (also in Eastern time). I hadn’t ordered from Hobonichi in several years actually, because I’ve only been getting the weeks but I need a new 5 year planner and was shocked at the price difference, holy cow. So I did the same thing as you, ordered all I wanted (enough to get free shipping 😮) and got a few extras knowing I’ll sell them (since I’ve been on a Mercari selling/purging tear anyway). #2) Right there with you on preferring to stay home, petting my cats, just chilling 😅 #3) Seeing Twisters tomorrow, so glad to know it’s good (TLDR - husband and I had debated between Twisters and Wolverine/Deadpool last week, unfortunately decided on Deadpool 🤦♀️ I knew nothing about Deadpool - yikes - the fact it was rated R should have tipped me off. Oh mercy. Horrible. Thankfully it was the “cheap ticket” night because 3 minutes in I knew we’d made the wrong choice! Lesson learned 😅)

OMG! The exact same thing happened to me. I tried for 1 1/2 hours and watched all the things in my cart go out of stock. I finally went to Atlas Stationery and was able to get all the planners I wanted except the one Weeks I really wanted Yumi Kitagishi Beautiful Wallpaper. I woke up this morning and was able to get that one on Amazon. I was like you and had everything favorited and was ready to go, so frustrating.

This is my first time buying into the hobonichi brand. I was already a little overwhelmed with having to make planner decisions in august, so I made the conscious decision to not buy on release day. . . . however, after hearing about all the panic, I decided to avoid the website and buy my few essentials from atlas stationers instead. A bummer since the main site's prices are better, but at least there's some comfort in knowing I got the items. I also decided to hold off on getting my weeks for another month or so. Hopefully it won't feel so weird to me buying for 2025 then. I really like the chili pepper red and I'm assuming that that one won't sell out because no one seems to be excited about that color but me, lol. My one gripe is that if Hobonichi planned to build this hype around their products, along with the scarcity they created by having less inventory (presumably by how quickly certain items sold out), that they DEFINITELY should have boosted their server capacity for this launch specifically. They knew there would be a lot of traffic on their site on release day. It was poor logistics planning, in my opinion.
I agree, poor planning or something went wrong. They’ve been popular for years now, and I think they’ve honestly had better releases than this one, but the experience was much better. I’m sure they will fix whatever went wrong. And yes, it DOES feel weird to buy a planner in August/September!
Oh yeah. And all I wanted was a Paddington Weeks and pencil board. 😂 I took at as a challenge and I wasn’t going to lose. 😅 Finally got it ordered almost 4 hours after launch. 🤪

I order 2 items sometimes 4 every year. I order a A6 and a weeks . I get A weeks cover and sometimes order an A6 cover. This year it was 3 items. Everything I wanted was on AMAZON. I am a prime member so no shipping fees. I can not stand Hobonichi’s web sight. It sends my anxiety through the roof! I don’t do bright colors. So I always look for the most neutral earthy color. I got a gray Weeks this year. I did get the Dogs in the wind cover it is very cute!

Sorry you had such a hard time! I wanna say I went through a smaller version of what you're mentioning last year, where it happened a couple times, and then my card wouldn't working, so I had to use my husband's, and then I ended up ordering again when they restocked the little things cover. Too much money spent on planners and accessories last year with too little use to justify getting anything this year (there were 2 of the weeks that ALMOST got me, but I stayed strong, lol)
Now if you can make it through the unboxings. 😅

Happened to me also. I gave up after 30 min of struggle. The next morning, like 12 hours later, I logged on to see how much was out of stock after so much had been in the first 30 minutes. And all the stuff I wanted that was out of stock was available. I made an order...not even sure what I ordered as I was so confused and felt like I had to go fast to not lose items. Hopefully, it will actually come. I feel like it could not actually be a real order??!!!
I felt so unsure and hurried the next morning as well, although it was 4 am…so that may have been part of it.

I was there with you with my husband was also trying to do emotional support … I thought it was going to go so smooth favorited everything done 5 minutes in and went to check-out and nope :( after over an hour I was almost in tears (I know over dramatic) I finally at around 11:30 once all the cousins showed out of stock I was able to get an order yoseca and then getting up this morning the Hobonichi store appeared to have everything again I didn’t know what to think. I wish they would have done a better job communicating with everyone, I feel like tells us more would have helped the panic.
Yes!! Unfortunately I couldn’t stay up any longer, and was thankful Yoseka had something in stock for me. I just felt so sad going to bed without an order. 😩

I ended up not being able to get anything that I wanted to order as I sat at the Hobonichi store trying to get through for an hour and a half with most everything in my cart going out of stock while I tried to get through. And then they just closed access to the store entirely. I had wanted to get a cousin with one of the 2025 covers but ended up having to go to a US reseller store and buying what was left over and available, a HON, just to have a planner for next year and I had to pay a $40 up-charge for that HON. This whole experience has really soured me on Hobonichi as a whole and I may look for another companies planner as an alternative in the future just to not have to deal with this same mess next year.
Hopefully whatever was broken gets fixed. I hope you don’t give up on Hobonichi!
ughhhh I stayed for the launch, it was my first time buying tbh. I was so angry LOL It was like 4am in Poland, so I was half asleep for staying all night. Then I was like nahhh, and went to buy from our polish retailer (Escribo - if someone wants to check it out, they ship international, so maybe they have some things you wanted :D) And yeah, I got hobo original a6, weeks, some pencil boards and stickers and the package was in my hands like in 2 days. Thats the plus, mayybe it was overpriced, but it ended up to be the same cuz the shipping was free :)

i had the same it was 3am here in the UK when it opened up i stayed up till 5.30am then gave up as half of the stuff i wanted went out off stock so i had to get my last choices at 5pm that day as i got so upset which isnt like them so will have to wait till they get stock in

All the hobonichi FB groups went crazy. I was only going to get 1 weeks so going through hobonichi website did not make sense with shipping. I was logged in jetpens like right before 10pm. Grabbed the Through the purple night weeks. Checked out by 10:01pm. I was lucky because of the hobonichi website crash turned people to rush like a frenzy to US retailers. And jetpens sold out for that one within minutes. Then yoseka sold out. It was insane. People were so frustrated. They missed out on the one they wanted especially that yellow cover and the bear weeks.
I saw things were sold out on JetPens and immediately ran to Yoseka. I was after the animal condo pencil board.
So sad I think everyone was having the same problem. I believe most of the shopping was all the stores in the USA were able to shop. I had to keep filling my cart many times. The only one planner I was not able to get was a Weeks that was sold out on every site. Hope in Oct 1 it will be like years ago. Thank you for your video hugs from me

Same to me. When I realize the Hobo website is too busy, I immediately went to Yoseka to buy the covers I want although it’s more expensive than original price.
I almost did the same thing but every item I wanted was marked up $20 more than Hobonichi’s prices. I do get that they have to make a profit and all of the US retailers have about the same prices. But my shipping from Hobonichi was very reasonable so I save money.

I did the same for the core items I felt would sell out. At least we’re supporting a great small business. I’m ordering a couple of One Piece 10/1 items so I’ll get some other items then.
Omg! Glad to know I wasn’t the only one! This was my first time ordering from Hobonichi and it kept losing connection with the server! I ended up ordering the Techo and Avec from Jet Pens. I waited until the morning to order a couple more small things from Hobonichi on Amazon because they wouldn’t be enough to justify spending for shipping from Hononichi, Jet Pens, or anywhere else.

Sorry to hear the launch was so crazy. I'm glad in the end you were able to get the items you wanted. I tried ordering from hobonichi years ago and had issues with my card not working because it was an international purchase and I had to talk with someone at the credit card company. Then my order was held up for weeks because I had to pay import fees. I decided I didn't want to go through that again so I just paid more and went through jet pens and plant paper to get what I wanted. I look forward to your unboxing. AAlso I'm jealous you are able to do HRT i can't because I'm a breast cancer survivor. I've had hot flashes and other symptoms going on 20 years now due to being put into menopause at age 35.

Yessss! It happened to me as well! Last year I had no problem! Sooo I’m wondering what happened as well! I’m on the east coast also and by 11:00 I just went to Yoseka and just bought everything… and a few extra things lol!!

Idk if this is frowned in the hobonichi world but I only wanted one of the weeks and an A6HON so I ordered from Amazon. Both of them. I didn’t have any issues and I know shipping from hobonichi can be expensive which is part of the reason why I did this. The other reason is my credit card gets cash back from Amazon so I have been trying to buy most things from Amazon if I can. I’m sorry you and everyone else had such a rough time with this. I guess it’s expected when you’re buying from a brand that’s so popular on release day. Also, I bought my stuff September 2 and not the 1st so that could also be why I had no issues.
If I had a small order I would have 100% done the same!! This is only the second year, if memory serves, that other shops have had stock on release day. It makes Hobonichi much more accessible!!
I went to Paper Mouse after about 90 min of frustration. Got everything I wanted. No hassle.

I wanted to secure gifts for my boyfriend and a friend at launch with the freebies (I'm using an older edition Weeks for next year. I wasn't a big fan of this year's lineup). 😢 Ended up ordering from Jetpens and some exclusive stuff directly from Hobonichi later. I wasn't taking any chances. I was at the cart 10PM-4AM. Soooo shocked how awful this year's launch was handled!! In light of this, at least it made me rethink how much I should get each year. 😅
If it goes this way next year, I’m giving up sooner and coming back after some sleep. 😅

Same sentiment about the launch. Wound up getting my items from Yoseka (which is local to me b/ seeing my cousin Avec for double the price was heartbreaking). I wanted the freebies so I placed 301.95 worth of items in my cart at hobonichi. I was bummed the server was down & my cart got emptied multiple times BUT hours later, I'm content w/ getting my items sans freebies- I spent less & put it towards my Kokuyo order this afternoon. All in all, money saved & I'm gonna get stationary storage on Amazon 😅

The same thing happened to me 😢 I wound-up purchasing at Yoseka and JetPens and then went to Hobonichi yesterday to get the rest. The only thing I missed out on was the Paddington Weeks. I’ll try again when they have the One Piece release in October 🥰

I just avoided the whole hobonichi launch this year. I didn’t even peek because I know I would have FOMO. I purchased my 2025 cousin from Jenni Blick. I purchased a couple of accessories from jet pens. And I’ll probably just buy my weeks from Amazon. I don’t have the time, patience or desire for these marketing frenzies trying to shop online at the same time everyone else does. And from what I’ve seen so far, I’m so glad I avoided all of that because there’s really nothing in the lineup that I feel I missed out on. I’m also getting heavy duty marketing emails, like sometimes several a day., from a planner brand that I purchased last year. I don’t know if I’m purchasing it this year, but man are they hounding me. And actually last year I didn’t buy the planner until halfway through the year when it was on sale and I wanted to just give the layout a try. So even though they keep sending me marketing mail saying, if you don’t purchase now, you’re gonna lose out on your favorite color, I know that’s not really true because there were plenty left in 2024 halfway through the year. And if I don’t get my preferred planner cover color, it is not the end of the world. Over on the Sterling Ink Facebook group I cannot believe the people whining because at the launch they didn’t score their favorite color cover. OK I get it. She launched a burgundy cover this year that is just stunning, especially if paired with the gold edges. But my goodness the way people are carrying on over a $35 passport size planner that they couldn’t get in burgundy when there were three or four other beautiful color choices, it’s just beyond me. Don’t people realize that these launches and limited, or so-called limited items are meant to create a marketing frenzy. I’m just over it lol
I’ve unsubscribed from almost every single company. The marketing emails are out of control for many of them. What makes them think that an email multiple times a day is acceptable?! I’m glad you only got what you wanted for 2025!! My order will finally be here in a couple of days. I’m excited to finally make my final choice for which Weeks will be the one.
