Every 100th viewer liked this comment. Seriously, what is going on? I never thought, that a parker square joke gets so much attention after a year of its debut. Wow, thank you a lot.
Border patrol: whats the reason for your visit? Matt: I'm trying to see if the coriolis effect make water drain differently in different hemispheres. Just let that sink in for a while...
At around 4:23 you can clearly see the Australian side Matt adjust his ear piece, it would be completely impossible without it, and even with it, what a massive video sync this is!!
And also, there is 9 hours time difference between London and Sydney. Considering that the Big Ben shows 15:35 at the beginning, it should be about midnight in Sydney. As Sydney is north from the Antarctic Circle, this video should be impossible.
Exactly when Matt brought in the other Matt my video flipped upside down. I thought this was a cheap joke, but when it had still not switched back after a minute, I realized that lying in bed with your phone to your side can sometimes lead to things like this.
I have always thought that this experiment needed to be done, so I am very glad to see this! Excellent timing and video editing to make the two Matts work so well together. Wonderful!
_Airport security:_ "Excuse me sir what is that in your baggage it seems heavy." _Matt:_ "Oh this? Before I answer that, did you ever think about how today is the olders you ever been and youngest you'll ever bee again?" _Airport security:_ "oh.. no I've never thought about that... I will let that sink in." _Matt:_ "Thank you bye.."
So many puns and the banter while talking to yourself messes substantially with my head. I absolutely must see a making of/behind the scenes of working this one out :)
Scripting, rehearsals, timing. The only unpredictable result in this video was the final "pouring from the middle" experiment, where the discussion about the result was very small, since past Matt couldn't know what future Matt got. The rest of this was most likely closely timed during multiple attempts at conducting this experiment and rehearsing the lines. It is still super impressive though. A lot of work, time, and effort went into this, and the execution is, as far as I could tell, flawless.
The Thames used to be used for sewage, now, however it is cleaner than its ever been, I want to say it's drinkable but I don't have the facts behind that
2:00 - Australian Matt is excited like a British person getting to have a Doctor Who adventure in real life, which is, amusingly, not quite far from the actual video.
I just realized: the coriolis effect works in the exact same direction on relative to the equator. It's just a matter of which side you view it from. British Matt is flushing the water North- to South Pole whilst Australian Matt is flushing the water South to North pole. .
After this, I went and rewatch a video of the same experiment used to amuse the tourist visiting Equador. Now I realised that the water is poured with the adecuate initial angular mometum depending on which side of the equator they are in. (srr bad english and srr almost a year late)
At the start, about 3 seconds in I was thinking of the Veritasium and Smarter Every Day videos, and Ironically when I came to New Zealand in 1988 one of the first things my father did was fill up the bathtub with water, leave it to sit for 2 days, pour in some food colouring and watch it drain out. Seemed really weird to me but he was quite excited. Must be a Parker thing...
Actually loled the whole video. It is so dumb, but so hillarious! And I'm really glad you put it up, not only because of the jokes nor because of all the effort (and such great sync (pun intended as well)) but because you're not afraid to show that data sometimes doesn't go according to theory. You Matt, are an inteligently fun person. Thanks for your videos.
It is completely logical that the UK version is going clockwise. There is a big clock in the background! What would you expect, of course it follows. Nice work! Speaking of the Coriolis effect, I was kind of curious if you could measure the circumference of the earth given the rotation rate in Derek and Destin's videos.
Awesome video! Finally someone taking a scientific approach to this controversial topic. People claiming the water spins according to the hemisphere they're on always irritate me...I'm going to start sending them this video now :D
London is in the Western Hemisphere and Sidney in the Eastern Hemisphere. And London is in the Eastern Hemisphere and Sidney in the Western Hemisphere. And they are both in the same hemisphere. Longitude is all relative, man.
How can London be in the western and the eastern hemisphere when the video clearly stated that it is in the northern hemisphere? Is London exactly in the center of the four hemispheres, touching each of it? And is Sidney in the other center on the backside of the earth? That would be a coincidence that's hard to believe for me!
The point is west/east is relative. While the earth has a clear rotation around an axis, there is a clear middle to the sphere. However, any longitude on earth could be the same as any other as far as rotation is concerned. The way we defined longitude was pretty much arbitrary. 0 degrees longitude could have just as well been somewhere in Russia, America, or through your back yard.
Australia was probably shot after while the England shot was playing in your earphone but how did you sync your England shot? Was there a script that you go through since the beginning? Anyway, great work as always.
+Faruk Eren ÇIRACIOĞLU Yes, Australia was shot after UK, as understood by our time-limited mortal brains. The Aust-to-UK audio link-up required some very advanced physics.
While travelling in Kenya I crossed the Equator. There was guy with a metal bowl and a bottle of water. For 5 dollars he showed me the Coriolis effect live. We walked 100 meters north and the water spinned anticlockwise, then 100 meters south and it spinned clockwise, then back to the centre and it went down without spinning. No trick there. I was holding the bowl and pouring the water myself.
Britain used to make homes with hot water tanks to store hot water, but they were usually left open to the air, so things could end up inside the tanks. The two taps separate water from the mains, and water from the tank, so you don't get ill by drinking the hot water with potentially rats/mice/whatever can get in there, in there.
I'm from Canada, I've never seen separate hot/cold taps. I don't really get why. I even seen Tom Scott's explanation on it, and I still don't see why they would need to now, other than tradition.
Low Pressure systems rotate anti-clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and High Pressure systems rotate clockwise. The air is moving downward in a High Pressure system, which is analogous to the sink drain model. Your experiments behaved as expected. I believe you demonstrated the Coriolis effect and also showed that it is weaker as you get closer to the equator, which is why the Australia results were not as consistent. Love your videos.
Okay, I'm convinced it's the same sink, but how do we know it's the same Matt? Matt was never marked like the sink was.
Brandon Francey Why are you convinved it's the same sink?
I can tell it's the same Matt from the identical ways they hold the container for left, right or center.
Don't be silly they are clearly talking live to each other
It’s definitely not the same Matt. I mean... duh... they wear different T-shirts!
Brandon Francey, it is NOT the same Matt I am convinced. The antipode Matt hasn’t’ much to say. which is untypical.
I really enjoyed the boats in the background. I also respect how difficult this was to make.
Yes i have watched your video too it was also difficult to make
I think the boats where just passing by...
*_Oh wow-_*_ Hello there_

Getting a sink in sync on both hemisphere. A parker proof method.
Pretty sure the pun is the only reason for this entire excercise in futility ... and i approve to the highest measure!

Dear London, that's not the colour of water, love from Australia
lol I know it is actually disgusting but to be fair it is a river and not a harbor so it's bound to have a lot of suspended sediment
It's just very muddy in London, it's more blue the further along you go and perfectly swimmable

11:55 - be honest Matt, you came up with the "Draining Montage" pun first, and worked backwards towards a video in which you could use it, right?

Simon: As opposed to a "training montage".
Still totally worth it.

First he had draining montages and then syncing up sinks.
And he even had a "small plug" for his channel (for those of us committed enough to watch the end screen)!
When the airport staff saw the size of your suitcase they must have thought you brought everything but the kitchen sink... Well they were close.
