  • Epiphone Les Paul Classic Worn (Affordable AND Good?)
This is a fairly affordable Les Paul by Epiphone. Gibsons are known for not being cheap, quite the opposite. So is this a good alternative to the real thing? Is it a good guitar? Let's find out.
EDIT: It turns out the weird resonance was the truss rod after all, so that was very easily fixed.

As for the buzzing/vibration issue, check the tuning machine bushing nuts on the face of the headstock. Also check the tuning machine button screws as sometimes those are loose from the factory.

I love the subtle squeal on the les paul epiphones. I think they are amazing guitars and hardly noticeable from the Gibsons (apart from the logo). And the sustains that comes with them are truly amazing.

resonance comes from the tunomatic bridge screws, I had the B string screw driving me nuts until I figured out what is was. Easy to sort out. Fantastic guitar. I play in the UK with a indie-mod band, people come to ask me what pickups I have installed, hard to believe this guitar sounds so great out of the box

Nice review. I used to have an Epiphone Les Paul Custom several years ago; it also had that buzz around the middle D (5th string 12th fret open harmonic and also open D string) and the culprit was the neck pickup. I took it to a guy to get it set up and he repaired the pickup under factory warranty. As I recall, he had to cut and resolder the pickup cover back onto the backing plate. And he did a great job with the setup, too.
Before owning that Epi, I had always thought the Les Paul = sustain thing was mostly hype. Not so. That cheap, Chinese thing with its short-tenon neck had more sustain than a U.S.-made Flying V that I also had back then. Made me a believer. (I'd still rather have a Flying V than a Les Paul, though. Cooler-looking and better access to the highest frets.)

Very nice guitar, indeed! When you played jazz, you almost played the solo from Toto's "Rosanna" and you could use your MXR Microchorus for the Zakk's riff from "No More Tears". I was expecting some heavier sounds but it was a good demo!

It's likely the bridge. The retaining bar on the saddles is loose. Either it or the saddle it is supposed to keep in place is vibrating. I've had this happen to me on an epi les paul custom before and it baffled me for a few months as well. I started with the tuners, then the truss rod... then I tightened all of the nuts on the electronics, even taped down all the wires thinking one of them might be the issue. I was about to change the toggle switch thinking that was rattling when I saw the issue with the bridge. ;)

That Sir is a flagrant violation of the Minor Pentatonic Code, and your sentence is to watch that scene in the movie Crossroads where Ralph Machio pulls out a blues phrase at the end of his classical piece during a class at Julliard? If you make a bone nut from a cow humerus your guitar will sound funny...April fools!
I have a honeyburst Epi Les Paul that had that same annoying buzz on the B and hi E open strings. I stuck a bit of cotton bed sheet under those strings at the nut and it stopped. I replaced the nut and problem fixed. I looks like the nut slots were either cut too deep or too wide.
I have a Rickenbacker 360 with the vibrato tailpiece and the guitar buzzed like that. Drove me nuts. Turns out the screws on the bridge for adjusting the intonation wore out the holes where the screw ends sit and several of the saddle screws were rattling. I think the vibrato rocking the strings back and forth caused it. The intonation has only needed adjusting a couple times in 40+ years.

Sound is the most important thing. But I can't past that terrible looking sunburst. Not the matte finish--I hate a very distinct yellow-to-dark red burst, looks cheap. I'm sure it's a nice guitar, the new Epiphones are very nice.

The buzz would be a return for me... I think it goes to show that Epiphone haven’t got it right yet.... Its a shame as I had an Epi LP Custom about 30 years ago, and that was a constant source if frustration... They just army good enough, and other companies do better copies.... If I were to do it all over I would have just saved up sooner and got the guitar I actually wanted....(I got one a few years later).
    I know thats harsh....

@@MrPolevaulter I just acquired a Harley Benton sc 550 emg pups for 335.00 English pounds inc vat and import duty.
It is made in Indonesia from thomann of course and I am shocked tbqh as it is an unbelievable instrument. Perfect build and the neck is very much on par with my les Paul custom shop and Sg standard. Rolled polished edges, ultra buzz free action. It’s sound is in between the former guitars I have mentioned. Lovely locking tuners, I just can’t believe it. I actually love the neck cut at the top it just helps on the upper register so much more than the les Paul shape, also I feel the headstock angle is a little shallower as well. How did they do it.
I do think these made in Indonesia models have gone to a level competing with guitars four times the price. Wow.
