Batman: Why the Joker Needs Punchline, Explained
    Via CBR.com
Batman writer James Tynion explains why he decided to introduce the Joker's latest sidekick, Punchline, ahead of Joker War.
One of the most talked about characters introduced to the DC Universe this year is Punchline, created by James Tynion IV and Jorge Jimenez in the pages of Batman as the Joker's latest fiendish sidekick.
Tynion explained, "Joker needed to have a lieutenant if we were going to have 'Joker War,' because Joker isn't really a general; Joker is going to do what Joker is going to do. Even though he can have a whole gang system around him, you need the person who's actually telling the different gang members what to do, because Joker is just going to say something mysterious and then shoot one of them in the head and then go off and do whatever he wants."
"Punchline represents young people getting radicalized by dark ideologies, and she has been radicalized by the dark ideology of the Joker. She's a full believer in what the Joker is and what he represents, probably even more so than the Joker actually believes anything that he says that he represents because the Joker is more of a nihilist than he claims to be when he's waxing poetic."
Batman: Clownhunter, Gotham's Newest, And Oddest, Vigilante Joins Joker War
    Via CBR.com
James Tynion IV introduces the violent, new vigilante Clownhunter, slated to debut in this summer's Batman: Joker War.
This summer sees the arrival of DC's massive Batman crossover event "Joker War," where the Clown Prince of Crime will target Gotham City and Dark Knight, more deadly than ever before.
In his latest newsletter, Batman writer James Tynion IV shared new details about the storyline's teased lethal vigilante Clownhunter.
BATMAN Writer Prepares Fans For Joker War (and Beyond)
    Via screenrant.com
The Joker War has officially begun, and Batman writer James Tynion explains how the comic event is going to make serious changes to Gotham City.
The rivalry between Batman and his greatest villain may seem destined to go on forever, but that theory is about to be tested. Now that the "Joker War" is officially under way, the landscape of Gotham City has changed in ways Bruce Wayne never expected. Batman's money is gone, his friends are incapacitated, brainwashed, or worse, and his most trusted ally was laid to rest months ago. And the war has only just begun.
Along with a handful of other outlets, Screen Rant got the chance to hear just what is coming in "Joker War" from writer James Tynion IV directly. While the full scope of the events (and the fallout it will have on other members of the Batman family) is being kept quiet for now, make no mistake: changes are coming.

Tynion’s been killing it. The energy comes right off the page with some killer art too. I can tell he’s not afraid to try new characters and I’ve liked them so far. Glad he’s having this success and he’s gonna crush it with his creator owned. He timed this perfectly

Tynion is simply falling back on smart, albeit overused tactics, but they are definitely working to reinvigorate the series. It’s been about a year and a half since I actually wanted to go to a comic shop to get Batman on release day. Tynion’s run has had me doing that since issue #91.

"Tom King's work is the same thing"
Truer words have never been spoken. I noticed this only having read Mister Miracle and his Batman run, he'd reuse the same things over and over. I'd even mention this to other readers and they'd accuse me of "not understanding what King is doing" lol
The episode where Scott and Barda are running through Apokalips and having a random discussion while fighting parademons, and Batman and Nightwing running around Gotham and Nightwing having random monologue.
This is an excellent breakdown of King, thank you for this video!
You guys are definitely not rubes :D

Honestly, what Tynion did with Clownhunter the way Joker described him in today's issue nails the character. I wasn't sure of the character, but the way Joker described him. Yep, I'm sold on Joker's plan now. The war isn't just between Joker and Batman but Gotham's soul. Clownhunter will be Joker's last laugh to Batman. Poisoning future heroes as we see with Ghost-Maker next.
But it isn't just Batman itself Tynion is fixing. Look around in the Bat umbrella comics.
Nightwing is finally getting the Ric Grayson subplot undone. Batgirl finally ends after years circling around the same plots. Jason gets a new status quo (I think Lobdell was circling the drain at this point). The only comic in the Bat Umbrella that is ending naturally seems to be Batman & the Outsiders, which until Tynion was the best Batman comic out there the last few years-- and he's barely in the freaking comic. In that regard, Cassandra is getting a new status quo-- or should we say the ultimate undoing of a past crime to her character from the prior regime?

Tynion is a good writer and injected some much needed energy into Batman after the King run. That said, it really is just your typical big action Batman vs Joker shenanigans, except now it's episodic for no good reason.
Not like they aren't an enjoyable read, but can't we get a detective story once in a while?

Didn’t people say tynions detective comics was the real Batman series during Tom Kings run? I think he’s doing a good job I just hope he doesn’t keep making big stories where the whole City gets destroyed, do some small stories where Batman does some detective work, have stories about characters and their relationships, it’s why I love Paul Dinis Batman runs because not a lot happens plot wise however it’s still a great story that’s based on the characters and relationships.

It was. Although his Detective run was ultimately a love-letter to Tim Drake fans, it was the “true” Batman title once King really started getting weird and going off the rails.

I think King’s run on Batman is the worst ever, personally so the bar was low. But Tynion did really well on Detective and it was definitely better. It was dragged out a bit and they focused on Spoiler and Batwoman a bit too much, but I love what he did with Clayface and early on with Tim.

I like how the guest first inclination in reference to Punchline being a radical was that she represents 4chan or Qanon. Could she not also represent the radicalized left? I think she is a symbol of radicalization generally. Not in a partisan fashion. Radical views are dangerous regardless of the underlying ideology

    • @dapperdragonmedia2053
      @dapperdragonmedia2053 4 роки тому

That was my first inclination because the comic industry leans far left in general. I don't expect them to consider their ideology as radicalized, so if they write a character that's described that way, I naturally assume they're taking a shot at the right. Hope that helps!

I like the story so far but you can really FEEL Tynion trying to defund Bruce Wayne in this arc. For those who don’t know he did an interview recently about how he doesn’t like how rich Bruce is. That he’s supposed to be “wealthy” instead of a billionaire.
But you can’t be Batman by being just wealthy. Maybe green arrow but not Batman. And what about the rest of the BatFamily that he supplies with gadgets or the Justice League which he funds. It’s a whole domino effect on that occurs if this becomes the new status quo. I like the story so far by he’s really gonna make it hard to undo that kind of shift.

  • @Iron-Bridge

I thought his Detective Comics had some very strong parts along with parts I didn't care for. Wasn't huge on the Batwoman focus. Didn't earn her place but constantly disrespecting Bruce's approach. Don't care if she was a former soldier. I want Detective Comics to be about..detective work in a superheroic context. Tim Drake's brainy detective work was good. In comparison with Tom King's run on the main series, Tynion looks very solid. So he's not brilliant but he's certainly worth reading.

These are the type of stories that was written by the late Dennis O'Neill & Len Wein, Steve Engelhart, Alan Brennert, James Francis Moore, Neal Adams wrote. Why not get J Michael Straczynski , a Batman fan & a great writer to do some stories & have him to produce \ write Batman for movies or TV mini-series.

Also don’t think that he’s editorializing on his characters too much. Much interpretation can be left to the reader, but the writer will have his intentions for how he wants his character to come across. Him expanding on that in a newsletter doesn’t really impact how the character comes across in the book or stop people from coming to their own conclusions. And personally, I love how the relationship with Joker and Punchline isn’t romantic or serial killer groupie which is what I thought she would be. I think the character has so much more potential and is more interesting having chosen this path on her own.

Too soon for me to say if I like this run better than King’s, but Tynion has been doing a great job. All of his new characters have been hits with me. Clownhunter looks really cool, Underbroker is such a cool concept I’m surprised it’s not used more in the batbooks already. He really likes his toys though, which is where the creativity can lose me a bit with the multitude of vehicles but it did do a great job to setup the kind of arsenal Joker will be utilizing so it makes sense. I was worried he was going to write out Catwoman and gloss over the relationship but even though he’s separated them I like how Catwoman and her connections to the underworld are still so intrinsically tied to the story. Thought this run would be good, but it’s better than I expected.

I personally loved Tom King's run. He will have his ending with Bat-Cat. Currently I am subscribed to the Batman comic and all its tide-ins. I have to say that after reading Snyder, King, and Tynion. I still like King the best. Mostly because the freedom he gave to the artist. Currently I feel like there are way to many similarities to Batman Eternal, it has too many dots to follow. I did had to suspend my disbelief when it came to the different fights that Batman had to go through during "His Dark Designs", it felt a little rush for me. I have read Batman before and after new 52. Personally it felt more human during King's run. But, I'll keep picking up Joker War to see where that road ends.

I just hope all these Batman eventa end becaise it just seems like it always a Batman circle jerk at DC. It's the reason why i avoid DC comics in general for decades. The only era where he may have been worth a damn is the era where Batman was married, had a child, and was acting like a father.

Thank you. I think that’s what killed Kings run. People were pissed when he and Cat did not get married. I wanted that because it would have been something new finally. Now things are back to the same thing again. Also I’m tired of hat events books can we please push someone else in dc. Listen I’m a hardcore dc fan that loves every dc character as though they are my kids but damn I need the, to give bat a break. With games, movie, animation books. It’s the only thing I like about marvel they push multiple characters.

I’m curious, not trying to be aggressive or an asshole here, but I’m truly curious as to what exactly you want from comics. You never seem to happy with much of anything. I mean, I’ve read tons of Batman from all different eras and all different creators, and while Tynion is by no means the best ever, not even on the “Mount Rushmore”, but he’s certainly reinvigorated the title, and he’s put Batman much closer to his traditional characterization than King had after his “I am Bane” arc. The art is improved, the story is more intense than it has been in quite some time. I’m just curious as to what exactly it is that you’re looking for.

Do you remember that premise of Matt Reeves' Batman? (wich sounds the same as always)... well, It's not hard to find out where comics are heading, no matter what Joker War results are, they are restarting Batman, that's it and And what better way to do it than to crushing Gotham? in that way you can argue, do you see what happened with the city?, now he has no time at all, of course except he is in multiple series at the same time, becuase he's Batman.
But it's really nice to say goodbye to depressive simp Batman.
    Just my opinion.

Tom King's run psychological, emotional babble. They way he wrote Batman was out of character and not interesting. What Tynion IV is doing now isn't completely original, if anything he started off taking ques from Scott Snyder's run. But one thing you can say about Tynion is he can write an interesting story. Tynion gets Batman. Rather Tynion stays on the title after this or not its his or DC's choice. As long he can maintain moment its good.
