  • The Moroccan Plaza is one of the main hubs in the park of Aerobats of Arabia, featuring many ornate buildings filled with shops and restaurants. A good reason to make an almost hour-long video with different styles of Moroccan-inspired facades, from Moorish Revival to the houses of Fez.

    You reminded me of a quote from my old concert band director: "Music is sounds and silences." He was highlighting that in order to have music, you also needed those silences, and it very much reflects the mentality about detailing a park too.

    21:40 "I dont know if you do this as well, but when I play Planco, most of the time I'm just rotating my camera..."
    Ow you're definitely not alone. I do that waaaaay too much as well when I create stuff. It's often the reason why i have barely any progress haha xD
    Beautiful episode again Silv. I like how you added the first part as well whereafter you went for a different approach and gave the reasons why. Very insightfull.
    In addition to that, I think there is even one contribution adding to this as well. I dunno if this is actually a thing in architecture or just something personal, but I feel like beside your mentioned reasons, it also differs that the first buildings are quite 'vertical orientated'. While the new builders (especially the one with the green roofs) are much more horizontal orientated. Buildings to me that emphasis vertical lines to me gives a more 'enclosed feeling'. I experience that for example in Phantasialand where most of the facades are quite vertical and high, which makes you feel emerged into the theme area without giving the feeling of gateways towards other areas.
    The more horizontal buildings however give a more open feeling, which works better for the plaza, and gives the arch much more the feeling of a gateway towards the mosque rather than an escape door of the enclosed area. I dunno if it makes any sense but that's the feeling I get. On the other hand, the other side of the plaza also got a slightly less vertical orientation although the 2 detailed buildings are quite vertical. But especially looking at 56:00, i think there is sufficient 'undetailed' space between these 2 buildings so that the feeling is more 'horizontalized' compared to the earlier situation with the 2 buildings next to the arch.
    One little remarking following from this tho, is that the view from the plaza into the mainstreet might give a skewed impression. On the right handside you have this very gorgeous building with the as you described almost victorian style (I agree, really one of the best buildings you've done here), which is quite vertical. And opposed to that on the left handside you have the restaurant building with the red canopy, which is more horizontal orientated and much lower. Describing the above reasoning, i think this gives a bit of a skewed impression on how the area acts on your feeling while walking from the plaza into the mainstreet. I think that the restaurant building could benefit from a bit more height and vertical orientation here, to empower the closed feeling of the mainstreet created by the other building. But that's a detail which could also be influenced by the buildings created after the mainstreet (and i get you probably dont want to redo some work again xD)
    Anyway, enjoyed watching the full 56 minutes of this epsiode. Keep up the great work!

    • @Neimit
      @Neimit Місяць тому

      Upon reading this I feel like I actually kinda agree that the restaurant could benefit from a tiny bit more height, maybe like a half-floor or something

    • @Silvarret
      @Silvarret  Місяць тому +2

      Love your insight, thank you! You put to words what I was partly just 'feeling'. Good tip on the corner restaurant building of the mainstreet though. I'll think about a vertical element I can still add in there. That makes sense.

    my first thought with Morocco being the transition area was that id be a perfect opertunity to put a gibralta inspired area on the other side of the main path wich leads into a Iberian or generally Europe inspired area. Maybe even make the main path blue between the two, or add two small bridges over water between main path and the two areas.

    For the point around 24:10 I think it's not really as much about "real" vs "fake", but about having a certain authenticity. The revival styles have an authenticity because they were a (series of) major style(s) in popular use based on cultural progression and meant for everyday use. The "fake" architecture doesn't have that authenticity because it's not for everyday use (like having "fake" floors) and isn't based on a similar cultural progession.

    As someone pointed out, green is considered the color of Islam. The color are usually assigned to important buildings like the king's palace, mosque, etc, but now hotels and restaurants have adopted the green roofing too. I think one of the interesting things about Morocco is the cities have a signature color: Casablanca = white, Marrakech = red, Chefchaouen = blue, etc. The colors pertain to the history of the city, however. Just something to consider.

    Hey most clay roofs turn green over time due to the oxidation of minerals inside or them. By painting them green they make this not noticeable until it can occur naturally on their own

    • @Silvarret
      @Silvarret  Місяць тому

      I'm from an almost completely flat country so no, I don't think it matters per se. As long as your parks have visual depth. You can always add depth by adding rivers and riverwalks, raised walkways, etc.

    24:00 You can say a lot abt real and fake architecture considering things you were mentioning: revival styles, architecture used as decoration or one-use architecture. Is festival infrastructure architecture? A practical answer to the specific question "why do 'we' think the architecture at Disney is fake?": probably -mostly nurture; we learn (abt) architecture related to housing, living. Most people don't think abt architecture when they see a contemporary public building (more likely only when a more rare architectural style is used); same thing for when they see e.g. a decoration for a theatre play. Is it the art or is everything of design that we build fysically and lasts? It's probably from you I first heard about forced perspective in theme parks, and it's because of the great commentray with some architecture talk now and then I keep watching your vids ( the builds also). Good choice opting for the other filler buildings instead of the revival one. Playing some RCT3 Soaked myself rn in prep for PC2. Groetjes.
