'Fiber'cation ~ Spinning Romney Wool Yarn for the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival 2022

  • I took an entire week+ off for a 'fiber' vacation, or, a 'fiber'cation as I like to call it. I loaded up the truck with most of my fiber equipment and drove to an Airbnb in MD. I got to spin uninterrupted for 3 straight days (absolute heaven!), in between volunteering at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival (one of the best times of the year for a fiberholic, even in pouring rain!).
    This footage was filmed over 2 days and shows the spinning of the singles and plying of a skein of Romney lamb's wool, purchased as a raw fleece from Oak Creek Farm in Iowa (oakcreeksheep.com). I processed the fleece from raw and combed it for spinning.
    I figured you may enjoy just watching spinning with no chit chat from me. The regular flyer is fairly quiet with little bobbin noise, just a gentle hum, but when I got to the plying, I changed to a jumbo flyer and bobbin that were not made by the original maker of the wheel. It isn't exactly centered, so it does wobble and chatter. I figured the volume could be adjusted as desired.
    I hope you enjoy the video!

    Nice to see you! Your fiber prep is always perfection, shows in your plies. Beautiful, but I expect nothing less from you. I'm processing a corridale fleece I bought recently.

      Thank you for your kind comments! Oh, Corriedale! Corriedale is another of my favorites! As far as prep goes, it's like anything else, you get out what you put in...

      I wish I had more blocks of days like that...everyday life doesn't always lend itself to uninterrupted fiber time. It was so so calming and joyful!

    I have been watching all your videos (not nearly enough lol), you have soooo much knowledge. I am the proud owner of two sharlea fleeces, one has a micron of 14.7 and the other has 14.6. I have to say, I am scared to death to process them. I have quite a few (dozen) Romney fleeces but those are so easy to process. Would you please give me some tips on how I should process? The locks are so fine I am a wee bit intimidated. I really appreciate it and super love all you videos, I have learned so much. Thank you for all you show us.

      Thank you for all of your kind words Larae! Do you know how to wash one lock at a time? It's the Margaret Stove method. It involves a bowl of very hot water, a bar of soap and a rinse bowl or two. It's fairly easy and since that Sharlea will spin up very, very fine, it's a perfect way to wash the fleece. My advise is to take your time and enjoy the process. You can purchase a download version of Margaret's video here, shop.longthreadmedia.com/products/spinning-for-lace-download-in-hd - I have the DVD and have watched it multiple times. Worth the $15. Good luck and don't hesitate to reach out with any questions. Best to contact me through email at thenaturalspinner@yahoo.com. Good Luck!

    That looks like the perfect fiber to spin for a vacation! I turned the volume all the way up; my wheel is much noisier than yours!

      Romney in general is one of the easiest fibers to spin. That's why I generally recommend it for beginners because of it's ease of washing, combing or carding and spinning.

    Such beautiful yarn at the end, after doing all the steps so skillfully. When you are plying, why do yu pinch the strands together just after the twisted section enters the orifice? Sometimes just there and sometimes down toward your other hand for a few inches.

    • @thenaturalspinner
      @thenaturalspinner  2 роки тому +1

      I think it helps even out the twist in the plying. You need even tension on each singles to get an even angle in the ply. I don't do it all the time, but if I think it might help, I'll do it. If one is tighter than the other, the looser one will spiral around the one with more tension and your plying won't we as nice.

    You make it look so easy. I use a drop spindle. Now its time to move into a wheel.
