The indignity of being taken to the scrap yards instead of under their own power for these proud beasts of burden that served us so well for so long is just too heartbreaking. Thanks for documenting this last chapter.
Sad to see so many of these old work horses end up at the scrappers, I guess that's what happens when you reach the end of your economic life. Thanks for sharing Bevan.
Thanks so much for sharing mate. As the others have said it's a very sad sight indeed. This was at a time i mistakenly had other interests as my priority, so i never even knew it was happening. Thanks again dude.

19:42 really disturbed me… the silence of it all, the crap condition and the stripping and the broken glass windows, and then the zooming into the sea of dead ALCo locomotives made me tear up a bit…
Very detailed footage of their last moments, thanks for sharing.Just curious, was there any particular reason why so few of the Mk 1 44's survived? I guess it was a matter of just being in worse condition than the mk 2's? Interesting to note a few of the survivors at the Cardiff auctions namely, 4458, 4468, 4473, 4502, 4464 (i think). Just curious though, anyone know what became of 4468 after the Canberra ARHS Liquidation sale?
NSWGR Alco's hated and begrudged by the GM fanatics.Yet they carried the bulk of the heavy lifting with in some cases lack of maintenance without a whinge or a whine❤
at 1:26 4824 judging by the picture looks like she have had a recent paint job, but even been a Mk 1 of the 48 class she went would've got the chop straight away (and she did!), it does make you wonder if she was parked healthy or not
We've had two locomotive scrapings in a few years in Victoria. The first one was former branchline loco's Y122, T374 and T396. This was carried out in Geelong. The second was a few months ago which was the saddest one. Former V/Line and Pacific National loco's A73, 77, 81 and 85 were chopped up at the broad gauge turntable in Dynon (Melbourne).
Thank you for your details video as sad lost nsw locomotive cut off scrap metal as some just have full refund and rebuild to run on new operation round nsw. Less got some money out locomotives As burn all of nsw passages cars in big fire down south only few safe from fire
Hey Bevan , many thanks for getting these clips , this IS the sadest video of yours that I've seen so far , I shed tears as these once were great loco's & it's so sad to see them end up like this after all of those many years of great work , I wish that I had plenty of money to save quite a few of these loco's for preservation. Visit my website ( Kev's Workshop ) & contact me via my "Contacts" page. Kevin.
So late to the comment section, as I can see the vid was uploaded in 2014. Absolutely heartbreaking. Does anyone know what the cost to purchase a 48 class loco would be approx?
A sad sight to see indeed........considering the many years of great service these old Alco loco put in, thanks heaps for sharing this clip bwDVD. BTW, I don't suppose you know roughly, how many trips they did moving them all to auction and scrap yards?
The locos were moved to Cardiff over in numerous trips and light engine movements in the months before the auction. All the trips after the auction are shown in the video.
Sadly the same thing is happening in Victoria. For example three first generation loco's; T396, T374 and Y122 got cut up for scrap last year. At this stage some of the remaining stored loco's are looking at a similar fate.
Just wondering are they flogged out, top ends flogged out? Valves loose? Generators worn?does anyone know when asiano may auction or sell 48 and 81 class loco's to within Australia?many thanks, grant
If you buy one of these how do you get it home??? I watched these things arrive and their predecessors the 40 and 41 class. They were green I think? Stephan, eternally a schoolboy!
All good things come to an end I guess....... it's a bloody shame though and especially sad more weren't saved considering almost all of them still ran perfectly & could be bought for around 20 k .
This is the first time I've seen this video, and it makes me mad that such wonderful old workhorses like these could be just scrapped without a blink of an eye. Surely there must have been a few preservation societies willing to take on the task of restoration, because it is truly a sad sight.

Thanks Bevan. Who gets to see the demise of great locos...but so sad. Your videos are priceless.
I was lucky enough to be working on site at the workshops before, during and after these locos came in for this auction. Sad to see them end like that.

they with never ever die out
So sad, hard not to get emotional. Thank you for sharing.

4520 was in the group at 12:45 which is now owned by the nsw rail transport museum and is currently getting an overhaul
19:42 really disturbed me… the silence of it all, the crap condition and the stripping and the broken glass windows, and then the zooming into the sea of dead ALCo locomotives made me tear up a bit…
This is my favourite clip of yours.
I guess Sims Metal got most of them.. they were like vultures around this stuff... A sad sight to see... I love those old 44's.
Yes Sims Metal chewed them all up and a lot more since then including a lot of stream trains we were busy and still are.
Ironic that they are now restoring all the locomotives they can get for private operators,,,, what a waste

Beautiful locomotiv!!!!
What is the reason for cabs in both ends.of some of these Ausi loco's
... a train only needs one cab ??
Easier to switch ends and give the driver better view and control.
very sad video does anyone know how many 44 class r left today?
Surely the cost of Upgrading a loco has got to be more economical than building new ones from scratch It common practice in USA
If you buy one of these how do you get it home???
I watched these things arrive and their predecessors the 40 and 41 class. They were green I think?
Stephan, eternally a schoolboy!
Why bother with HO gauge when you can get the real thing so cheap!
:-)
Very sad that day remember it immensely
Well. 4451's not going back into service anytime soon.
Gracias por el video
a sad day indeed
What a sad day this was!
All good things come to an end I guess....... it's a bloody shame though and especially sad more weren't saved considering almost all of them still ran perfectly & could be bought for around 20 k .
poor things :(
its the dinosaures going extinct all over again scenario only with diesels

just an opinion, just like a$$(0Les-they all have one. when you turn 40 we can scrap you too!!
It is the coal used to produce electrical power that is the deadly culprit.
