I have a sub 16610V (Kermit) that my parents bought me for graduation around the time you were buying yours. It was my daily driver until Rolex started making the 6 digit subs a few years latter. It was too special, both sentimentally and as a piece of watch history (40th anniversary for the sub) to risk damaging it beyond repair. My Mom is gone now but shortly before she passed she asked me why I didn't wear the Rolex she bought me any more. I explained to her that they don't make it anymore and that it was too sentimental to me. Then I mentioned that it is also the 40th special edition and that's why it has the green bezel. She smiled and said "your father wanted to get the black one" but that she "picked the green" because the green power ranger was my favorite when I was a little boy. She didn't choose that watch because it was special and figured it would be worth more than the other someday, she picked it because it reminded her of something I loved when I was a little boy. As I write this I have to dab the tears away from my eyes recalling that. I've owned many watches, some more expensive, some more rare, some more coveted but none as iconic as my "Kermit" sub.

Contrarian take, I kinda feel like the fluted bezel Rolex’s are the most iconic ie: the date-just & day-date. Imo while a lot of watch people might not be able to spot a sub or speedy, the DJ & DD are unmistakably Rolex’s

Marc, you are spot on! These two watches are 100% icons. Most people will recognize the significance, if nothing else, of these pieces. I own 15 watches, 14 automatics and one solar, which include two Omegas (no Speedmasters), and zero Rolexes. The entire collection (as do most probably) ranges from luxury to affordable pieces, including three Islanders. Other than serious watch enthusiasts, NO ONE would consider any of my watches iconic, even my Zenith Chronomaster El Primero A384 Revival which I consider iconic as hell because of the history it represents. I think iconic is overused in watch collecting--Buy what speaks to YOU, not what people say you should buy because it's an "icon".
My Submariner was a gift to me when I was 17. A 1973 model. In those days I could lay it away and pay on it from my after school job. It took over a year. I think now you have to pay the total up front and wait.. And wait.
I absolutely 100% agree! These two watches in my opinion are the two best watches of all time. If I could only have two watches in my collection, these would be the two. Oh, the Sub would be the no-date though. 😊😊
The center piece of my small but growing collection is my 1971 Rolex Submariner, second is my newly acquired Omega Speed Master Heritage. Also, my ISL-2 and ISL-214 are my go to’s for everyday.
Sold both of my Rolexs at the height of the bubble. I bought a bunch of watches w/ the proceeds and still had thousands to invest in the stock market. I will not do business w/ a company that conducts business in the manner that Rolex does. I did buy a Cronos homage of an Explorer as the dimensions are identical. Their logo disappears under most lighting conditions. My 10yo son loved it and it’s become his daily.

I like how you're just offering us your experience and opinions without trying to sell us Tiege Hanley. ;) I'm planning on getting a Speedy 38mm. Already have a 37.5mm Planet Ocean. My Islanders are often more of a daily driver as usual. I could see getting a Tudor Black Bay 54 with a Bond strap. The Yachtmaster might fit me better. Not a fan of the bi-directional bevel.
I have the 124060 Submariner and the latest Hesalite speedmaster moonwatch 310.30.42.50.01.001 and I have them because they are my favorite watches, the history of each and the iconic design just made me want one ever since I was a kid. but the 16710 GMT master II pepsi is also one of my favorites to wear and is equally iconic.

Interesting; especially the explanation of vertical integration (loved the hat tip to Milton Friedman). I noticed stamped steel clasps on the bracelets. Today we denigrate many Japanese brands for the same bracelet construction. 😊
I think denigrate is a strong word lol but its fair to say that a stamped clasp on a modern production watch is just not aligned with modern standards of watch design and production. I will also note that in my experience as an owner of a sub of a similar vintage equipped with that stamped clasp it is still a better execution than the modern stamped clasps from the brands to which you refer.
I find the Speedy to be the most perfectly realized tool watch. The balance of the sundials, index ring, just everything about it is clean and balanced. I have one on a leather bund strap and it gives a great 70s vibe, like something Redford or McQueen might wear. I love it.

I have the Speedmaster white dial, it's a beautiful watch, and I wouldn't exchange it for any Rolex. Last year I bought my son a Islander Northport which he absolutely loves.
So my buddy had a speedmaster reset like that too. Watch maker said to all ways stop the timer hand and then reset. Never to reset while the timer is moving.
Thanks for sharing! I can probably never afford either one of these, but I appreciate them for their horological significance. Ironically I feel the only other truly iconic watch is the Casio F91W which I definitely can afford. Maybe that’s why my current favorite watch in my collection is an A168 with a SKXMOD Kit on it. Great to see you also have a Speedmaster Reduced. I bought mine in 1992 with an inheritance from my grandmother. It has the albino dial as I preferred the white and the lack of roman numerals makes the dial look cleaner. Wore it everyday for 30+ years as my only watch before I tumbled down the black hole of watch collecting! I’ve had it serviced 3 times and it still works perfectly. I only wear it every 6 weeks these days as I have 4 watches and wear each of them in rotation for 2 weeks at a time. I like that it doesn’t have a screw down crown so it’s easier to set the time and wind up. How accurate is yours? I deliberately asked Omega to set mine to run fast as I prefer to gain time than lose it. My only Rolex is an Explorer 1 which loses exactly 2 seconds a day. Pisses me off!
The two belong together, if harmony is good then go for it. I personally own a GMT master 2 ( green and black)and a smp 300 no wave I love them both ☺️❤️
Own both, although its the 14060m sub, which has beautiful proportions, and the modern sapphire sandwiche Speedmaster. They are both strap monsters, comfortable and reliable. I like the aesthetic of both, two lovely stables in my collection.

I have a large collection like you and it contains at least half affordable watches. There are however twelve Rolex and five Omega watches, and I don't regret a penny spent on them. If I had to pick just one watch it would be my classic two hand, hand wind Reverso. I don't play Polo and I haven't been to the Moon. I did some diving during my military service.
l tried buying a Rolex recently. Things have changed! Retailers don’t carry any Rolex inventory these days. Gone are the days of gazing at a display case full of new Rolex watches. These days you make an appointment, place and order. Then wait over a year for your new watch.
Marc, on that misaligned minute counter, have you tried pulling out the crown, then pushing one of the pushers to align it? That's how it works with cheaper watches. Not sure about omega.
Re. Rolex. Fantastic you correctly called it advertising and not specifically marketing ; ) I would say they spend a lot because of the type of advertising they do, rather than the amount. It seems a reasonable amount for the brand to spend (a percentage v sales v competitors would be more useful) and I hardly ever see any apart from a naff clock at Wimbledon and the odd F1 that they no longer do anyway. Most people moaning about the 'marketing' never see it either. I only know of one ambassador and that's only because of UA-cam.
I think the most iconic watches are the Submariner, Speedmaster, Tank, Monaco, and Gshock. Non-watch people recognize them even if they don't know what they're called.
Love them or hate them, Rolex is an Icon. Theirs people who love them and people who hate them, people who know nothing about watches buy them. It's the only item in the world where that happens. Well, maybe you can say the same of Iphone and BMW. 😅
Its really sad that I am resigned to the fact that I will never own a Rolex. I really dont want to pay over retail, and I dont have - and wont build - a 'relationship' with my Rolex AD. I put my name on a list for a Skydweller last Summer and heard nothing, and the clear indication is that they wont sell me one. I am neither a Rolex fanboy nor hater, but it would be nice to add the iconic brand to my collection. Maybe one day in the future.....
Not a Speedmaster fan, but I have an Aquaterra Worldtimer and a Seamaster 300M. Although I don't care enough for any of them to go through the hassle or overpay for it to acquire a Rolex, it was very enlightening to learn of the level of their vertical integration. Too bad that they don't spend some of that advertising $ on R&D and design, but I imagine they prefer things just like way they are.
I agree these are two most iconic watches made. I love the Speedmaster but I can’t stand the manual movement. I wear a few homages from time to time, PD AirKing, Steeldive Sub, and a PD-1701 Speedy. The Pagani Design Speedy is sweet with the Seiko VK63 movt, but the new Snoopy MoonSwatch looks pretty amazing as well. I prefer quartz movements, and only have NH35 powered automatics. 🤷🏻♂️
Love the neutral perspective you bring. I feel the iconic status of Rolex comes down to masterful marketing. And the sub is by far their most recognizable flagship model, but I do feel that the Rolex we knew has morphed into a brand that appeals to a more superficial demographic, models are bigger, flashier, polished. And I don’t think I want to walk into a dealer and be treated like a second class citizen or be convinced that they’re doing me a favor allowing me to be be part of a waitlist for a novelty that I’m willing to invest a few thousand dollars on. It’s become ridiculous. Love the speedy, I have a blue reduced Schumacher edition. Super fun, but they are threading a fine line of almost overplaying the legendary status with the swatch collabs.
I own a Rolex (not a sub) and a speedy sapphire sandwich. Yes the speedy is iconic, but the bracelet is a hair puller and it feels a little dainty on the wrist. I would sell my speedy to pay for a fluted bezel DateJust all day. Yes, my casioak is more accurate but that’s missing the point.
I think the nicest automatics that I have come from Island watch, except for the Bulova Astronaut, I just wouldn’t pay Omega or Rolex money for a wrist watch. Casio or Island for me!
I have a Rolex and Omega, but I prefer Islanders and Spinnaker over both of them, because both of those brands are willing to do something fun and take risks with dial colors and lume etc
I'm not sure why I am fascinated and want a chronograph. Thinking of the new white dial speedy potentially. Personally, I think the Speedmaster looks better than the Daytona. I am on the fence. I will need to think it over some more. Maybe there will be a new chronograph that will catch my eye.
I’d love a Rolex Sub, & back in 1995 whilst on my honeymoon in Singapore, I almost bought one. The price was manageable but at a stretch. Hindsight is a wonderful gift to have. Anyway I didn’t. Just on 5 years ago I bought a beautiful 2004 Omega Speedmaster in immaculate condition from Japan. I have never wanted a Rolex since.
I get that from outsiders the Submariner is probably the most recognizable. I dig your Yachtmater more than those two. I still think for me, I would rather have a Tudor Pelagos, but I get appeal of the bigger brands.

I’m a fan of both. But in direct comparison the Omega looks a bit cheap next to the Rolex here. And I’ve traditionally been more of an Omega fanboy than a Rolex one. And this is one of the earlier Sub’s too, that doesn’t have the sheer build quality of the newer ceramic bezeled versions. Oh, the Omega is the reduced! I knew something looked off, the sub-dials look way too far apart. Where they’re more bunched together on the actual Moonwatch…phew 😅
I don't understand Omega pricing either. Except putting a little imprint of Snoopy on the dial doesn't add ten thousand worth of value, no matter how many idiots are willing to pay it. But look at the Speedy Racing. Can be had, new, for $3k-$4k.
I found the traditional Speedy with the black dial and white markings to be boring, so I got a 38mm Orbis Edition Speedy. I like the dark blue dial, light blue subdials, and teddy bear counterweight. Yeah, I'm a woman, but if someone finds teddy bears too cutesy, there are other colours of Speedys available and other styles, such as the Racing models, that look unique and interesting.
Everytime I mention I like watches,almost without exception, i will inevitably get asked ( especially by women) if I have a rolex! ( I dont)- so there's no question to me they have a tremendous brand recognition. Personally i dont like them, partially because of way they treat customers, but mainly because i just find them boring.☺️..however Their value retention also cant be questioned! . On the other hand every vague " watch person" knows the speedmaster & , especially of a certain age ......probably also wants to own one ( also me 😀)
If we go by actual achievement then hands down I think it’s the Speedy. The Submariner managed to find its way onto Hollywood wrists which boosted its status as an icon. I think Omega as a whole has a better pedigree of actual achievement than Rolex. However, it’s tough to beat pop culture.
As I have gotten older, I have come to realize that having more really feels like having less. Been thru several dozen cars (Mercedes AMG's, Jaguars, ect..,) cameras (many Leica's), and countless watches (Breguet, Blancpain, Zenith, Grand Seiko, Omega, Breitling, Independents...). Alot of which have sold or given away (but more should go). Frankly, these days, I find going on a hike with my dog or watching a movie with my girlfriend offers more joy and fulfillment than all the things I have ever owned (will give a nod to one 900HP GT500 for years of thrills and enjoyment- not all legal). So, when I hear about 300 watch collection, I chuckle a little but also offer a bit of sympathy and hope for enlightenment as the years progress. Happy New Year and hope everyone stays healthy and in good spirits.
How ironic that the Omega can withstand massive G forces, micro gravity, and the extreme temperature differential of the lunar surface, but one Long Island dog bite and it’s in pieces.
I feel Omega has lacked creativity in the past decades and have not branched the brand out. The model lineup has become stagnant. The dropping of the Prince and lack of expansion from the DeVille line has shrunk the company.
I think you could argue that both brands are almost devoid of ethics when it comes to their marketing. Whilst you may argue that the Speedtimer has been all about the Moon landing (where it failed and was replaced by a Bulova) the Submariner likes to ride the coat tails of things it ever had a hand in, like eluding to being the first watch warn on Everest (Which was a Smiths). Thats just one of may examples - but hey - what do you expect from the Swiss that have a long history of profiting from others and not really caring about Ethics?
Valid points, of course. So I'll flip it. . . do you think if Smith's had millions to blow on advertising, they would push that angle? Probably not, so I guess it's in the company.

They are worth what people think they are worth, and the majority of people still admire these. So, to answer your question, yes. However, for me, if I did it over again, would I have these? Not sure.

You cannot reset it while it is moving.
You need a flyback chronograph to be able to safely reset the stopwatch while it's running.
If it doesn't have it, don't try it.

Great to see you also have a Speedmaster Reduced. I bought mine in 1992 with an inheritance from my grandmother. It has the albino dial as I preferred the white and the lack of roman numerals makes the dial look cleaner. Wore it everyday for 30+ years as my only watch before I tumbled down the black hole of watch collecting! I’ve had it serviced 3 times and it still works perfectly.
I only wear it every 6 weeks these days as I have 4 watches and wear each of them in rotation for 2 weeks at a time. I like that it doesn’t have a screw down crown so it’s easier to set the time and wind up. How accurate is yours? I deliberately asked Omega to set mine to run fast as I prefer to gain time than lose it. My only Rolex is an Explorer 1 which loses exactly 2 seconds a day. Pisses me off!

They brought the speedmaster reduced back recently but it's thicker now.

Own both, although its the 14060m sub, which has beautiful proportions, and the modern sapphire sandwiche Speedmaster. They are both strap monsters, comfortable and reliable. I like the aesthetic of both, two lovely stables in my collection.

I have a large collection like you and it contains at least half affordable watches. There are however twelve Rolex and five Omega watches, and I don't regret a penny spent on them. If I had to pick just one watch it would be my classic two hand, hand wind Reverso. I don't play Polo and I haven't been to the Moon. I did some diving during my military service.

Retailers don’t carry any Rolex inventory these days. Gone are the days of gazing at a display case full of new Rolex watches. These days you make an appointment, place and order. Then wait over a year for your new watch.

Marc, on that misaligned minute counter, have you tried pulling out the crown, then pushing one of the pushers to align it? That's how it works with cheaper watches. Not sure about omega.

Fantastic you correctly called it advertising and not specifically marketing ; )
I would say they spend a lot because of the type of advertising they do, rather than the amount.
It seems a reasonable amount for the brand to spend (a percentage v sales v competitors would be more useful) and I hardly ever see any apart from a naff clock at Wimbledon and the odd F1 that they no longer do anyway.
Most people moaning about the 'marketing' never see it either.
I only know of one ambassador and that's only because of UA-cam.
I think the most iconic watches are the Submariner, Speedmaster, Tank, Monaco, and Gshock. Non-watch people recognize them even if they don't know what they're called.
Not sure about the Monaco - surely a Swatch watch or a Timex Mickey need inclusion?
Some might say that's a perfect 5 piece collection.

Love them or hate them, Rolex is an Icon. Theirs people who love them and people who hate them, people who know nothing about watches buy them. It's the only item in the world where that happens. Well, maybe you can say the same of Iphone and BMW. 😅
Its really sad that I am resigned to the fact that I will never own a Rolex. I really dont want to pay over retail, and I dont have - and wont build - a 'relationship' with my Rolex AD. I put my name on a list for a Skydweller last Summer and heard nothing, and the clear indication is that they wont sell me one. I am neither a Rolex fanboy nor hater, but it would be nice to add the iconic brand to my collection. Maybe one day in the future.....

Not a Speedmaster fan, but I have an Aquaterra Worldtimer and a Seamaster 300M. Although I don't care enough for any of them to go through the hassle or overpay for it to acquire a Rolex, it was very enlightening to learn of the level of their vertical integration. Too bad that they don't spend some of that advertising $ on R&D and design, but I imagine they prefer things just like way they are.

I agree these are two most iconic watches made. I love the Speedmaster but I can’t stand the manual movement. I wear a few homages from time to time, PD AirKing, Steeldive Sub, and a PD-1701 Speedy. The Pagani Design Speedy is sweet with the Seiko VK63 movt, but the new Snoopy MoonSwatch looks pretty amazing as well. I prefer quartz movements, and only have NH35 powered automatics. 🤷🏻♂️

Love the neutral perspective you bring. I feel the iconic status of Rolex comes down to masterful marketing. And the sub is by far their most recognizable flagship model, but I do feel that the Rolex we knew has morphed into a brand that appeals to a more superficial demographic, models are bigger, flashier, polished. And I don’t think I want to walk into a dealer and be treated like a second class citizen or be convinced that they’re doing me a favor allowing me to be be part of a waitlist for a novelty that I’m willing to invest a few thousand dollars on. It’s become ridiculous. Love the speedy, I have a blue reduced Schumacher edition. Super fun, but they are threading a fine line of almost overplaying the legendary status with the swatch collabs.

I own a Rolex (not a sub) and a speedy sapphire sandwich. Yes the speedy is iconic, but the bracelet is a hair puller and it feels a little dainty on the wrist. I would sell my speedy to pay for a fluted bezel DateJust all day. Yes, my casioak is more accurate but that’s missing the point.

I think the nicest automatics that I have come from Island watch, except for the Bulova Astronaut, I just wouldn’t pay Omega or Rolex money for a wrist watch. Casio or Island for me!

I have a Rolex and Omega, but I prefer Islanders and Spinnaker over both of them, because both of those brands are willing to do something fun and take risks with dial colors and lume etc

I'm not sure why I am fascinated and want a chronograph. Thinking of the new white dial speedy potentially. Personally, I think the Speedmaster looks better than the Daytona. I am on the fence. I will need to think it over some more. Maybe there will be a new chronograph that will catch my eye.

I’d love a Rolex Sub, & back in 1995 whilst on my honeymoon in Singapore, I almost bought one. The price was manageable but at a stretch. Hindsight is a wonderful gift to have. Anyway I didn’t. Just on 5 years ago I bought a beautiful 2004 Omega Speedmaster in immaculate condition from Japan. I have never wanted a Rolex since.

I get that from outsiders the Submariner is probably the most recognizable. I dig your Yachtmater more than those two. I still think for me, I would rather have a Tudor Pelagos, but I get appeal of the bigger brands.

I’m a fan of both. But in direct comparison the Omega looks a bit cheap next to the Rolex here. And I’ve traditionally been more of an Omega fanboy than a Rolex one. And this is one of the earlier Sub’s too, that doesn’t have the sheer build quality of the newer ceramic bezeled versions. Oh, the Omega is the reduced! I knew something looked off, the sub-dials look way too far apart. Where they’re more bunched together on the actual Moonwatch…phew 😅
The acrylic doesn't help!

Speedmaster is very overpriced now. 7.5 to 8k for a cam chrono. No doubt it is an iconic design though, which makes it tempting.
I don't understand Omega pricing either. Except putting a little imprint of Snoopy on the dial doesn't add ten thousand worth of value, no matter how many idiots are willing to pay it. But look at the Speedy Racing. Can be had, new, for $3k-$4k.

I found the traditional Speedy with the black dial and white markings to be boring, so I got a 38mm Orbis Edition Speedy. I like the dark blue dial, light blue subdials, and teddy bear counterweight. Yeah, I'm a woman, but if someone finds teddy bears too cutesy, there are other colours of Speedys available and other styles, such as the Racing models, that look unique and interesting.

Everytime I mention I like watches,almost without exception, i will inevitably get asked ( especially by women) if I have a rolex! ( I dont)- so there's no question to me they have a tremendous brand recognition. Personally i dont like them, partially because of way they treat customers, but mainly because i just find them boring.☺️..however Their value retention also cant be questioned! . On the other hand every vague " watch person" knows the speedmaster & , especially of a certain age ......probably also wants to own one ( also me 😀)

If we go by actual achievement then hands down I think it’s the Speedy. The Submariner managed to find its way onto Hollywood wrists which boosted its status as an icon.
I think Omega as a whole has a better pedigree of actual achievement than Rolex. However, it’s tough to beat pop culture.
I like em both but im more into chronographs. So the Omega is a little more appealing.
As I have gotten older, I have come to realize that having more really feels like having less. Been thru several dozen cars (Mercedes AMG's, Jaguars, ect..,) cameras (many Leica's), and countless watches (Breguet, Blancpain, Zenith, Grand Seiko, Omega, Breitling, Independents...). Alot of which have sold or given away (but more should go).
Frankly, these days, I find going on a hike with my dog or watching a movie with my girlfriend offers more joy and fulfillment than all the things I have ever owned (will give a nod to one 900HP GT500 for years of thrills and enjoyment- not all legal). So, when I hear about 300 watch collection, I chuckle a little but also offer a bit of sympathy and hope for enlightenment as the years progress.

I feel Omega has lacked creativity in the past decades and have not branched the brand out. The model lineup has become stagnant. The dropping of the Prince and lack of expansion from the DeVille line has shrunk the company.
Most of my watches are gifts from me to me - for shady but justifying reasons 😂
So annoying to me that these two watches from these brands with the price tags they have, both have stamped clasps and not milled.

I think you could argue that both brands are almost devoid of ethics when it comes to their marketing. Whilst you may argue that the Speedtimer has been all about the Moon landing (where it failed and was replaced by a Bulova) the Submariner likes to ride the coat tails of things it ever had a hand in, like eluding to being the first watch warn on Everest (Which was a Smiths). Thats just one of may examples - but hey - what do you expect from the Swiss that have a long history of profiting from others and not really caring about Ethics?

They are worth what people think they are worth, and the majority of people still admire these. So, to answer your question, yes.
However, for me, if I did it over again, would I have these? Not sure.
