STRUMICA CARNIVAL 2024🎭 - tradition since 1670

The Strumica Carnival is an annual carnival that takes place in Strumica and is one of the most significant customs and traditions of its kind in Macedonia, which has perhaps gone the farthest in its transformation of all the traditional masked games, both in terms of the time it is held, as well as in its purpose and function. The Strumica carnival is traditionally held every year within the trimer days, i.e. at the beginning of the great Easter fast, and the very name "carnival", associates us with the beginning of a fast, and in this case it is the Easter fast.
The beginning of the fast, i.e. the first three days, are called trimer days and they always start from the Sunday evening of Prochka and last until Wednesday, and within them, that is, on Tuesday evening, is the traditional carnival evening, when masked groups walk around the city and go to the houses where that has engaged, engaged girls and where they stay until the early hours of the morning. However, as far as the association of the carnival with trimer days is concerned, a distinction should be made, i.e. it should be noted that their association is only temporal, ie. they coincide in time, but not in essence, because in its essence the trimers are a Christian custom, while the carnival is a remnant of a cult from pagan times.
The carnival in Strumica is considered to be a very long tradition. He was mentioned by the famous Ottoman travel writer Evliya Çelebija as early as 1670. He, passing through Ustrumdzha, wrote: ...I came to a town situated at the foot of a high mountain and saw how that night masked people ran from house to house, laughing, shouting and singing... which clearly indicates the possibility that it's about the trimer carnival festivities in Strumica..
