    NOTE: At 6:30, I listed a few changes made to the Saturn port but forgot to mention they were also on the PS1 port. The PS1 port also had a voiced intro, parallax backgrounds and non-MIDI music tracks. Sorry guys.
    Float on over to this look at a 2D platforming classic on the console known for its wonderful sprites. Rayman is a bestselling game of the 5th gen, but how does it fare on the Saturn?
    Welcome to the series where I review every single Sega Saturn game released in North America by order of release date. I made a spreadsheet with all the games satakore.com has as American releases, listing them off by order of release date, including sources. All the games are narrowed down to the month they came out in the U.S.

    I have to confess, I was among the "3D only" crowd in those early 32-bit days. Rayman did look beautiful in the magazines though (and as pointed out in the video, did receive a big marketing push). I didn't get into 32-bit 2D until I rented the amazing Guardian Heroes from Blockbuster. I loved Rayman Origins and regret not playing the original when it first came out.

    A quick note on if I think the Saturn’s Rayman is the best port: Because of personal bias, yes. But it does look and play like the PS1 version. As I mentioned, there are a lot of subtle changes to the game among all ports. Since the Saturn hardware uses ”real” sprites, I think Rayman is very much at home here. But you won’t really lose anything by playing it on the PS1. They’re similar in terms of performance and play really well.

      I think any version would be fine. It all depends if the player can deal with the heavy difficulty this game has.

    The Saturn version also has those super cool end of level transitions with crazy effects that the PS1 version lacks IIRC. Surely that was a hardware limitation of Sony's 3D machine. Great video though!

    Rewatched this tonight. I loved Rayman and I advertised it wherever possible. I recently read that Michel Ancel has retired from working on video games. Ancel's Rayman and BG&E were favorites of mine.

    I remember finishing this game back then as a kid. Games like this one, Pandemonium!, Croc and Sonic Jam were among my favorites from the 16-bit transition. Back then, I never thought a game was better or worse than the other for it being 3D or not, they were each their own thing. It helped that, by being a kid, I was OK with almost anything as long as I was playing something enjoyable.
    It's interesting to know the subtle differences from each console and I also think the PS version is just as good, but I wonder how both compares control-wise. The PC has a very nice port too and with expanded content, today, a Rayman fan game based on this original one is available for free, it's a great time to enjoy this game and the fan content.

  • @wyleFTW

    The fog is a subtle and also huge difference, it's a shame they wouldn't even publish their best attempt of it for the Saturn version, I heard ubisoft had a good reputatuon for transparency tricks regarding the saturn so it's just a big missed opportunity in hindsight. Rayman is my favorite game

    I find that a lot of modern reviewers really exaggerate Rayman's difficulty. Maybe if you play it casually today it is, but if you were a kid back then and didn't have access to an unlimited amount of games, the difficulty and length were just right. It was a lot easier and less punishing than many 8 and 16 bit games designed to be cleared in one sitting after much practice.
    I was very disappointed when I bought Rayman 2 and blew through it in a couple of days; it didn't feel like an adventure like the original.

    • @PandaMoniumReviews
      @PandaMoniumReviews  4 роки тому +3

      Gurriato If gets pretty punishing in the second half but it definitely isn’t impossible. Any platformer fan can beat it if they put the time in.

      I found getting all the electoons to be one of the most challenging platformer experiences ever. Mostly because finding secret paths is trial and error (and death). There was a cheat code (hard to pull off!) that gave 20 lives or 20 continues, I forget. I needed that.

  • @williammcguire130
    @williammcguire130 3 місяці тому +1

    Rayman from a Sega perspective is fascinating because the original game always felt like a SNES platformer taken to the next level: like if Yoshi's Island had been an Amiga game.
    Sega always saw platform games as an arcade genre transported and there's very few Sega platform games (SONIC CD being the exception that proves the rule here as that was acknowledged by everyone working on it as a really special game) that incorporated the kind of long form adventure elements that the Big N started experimenting with in their SNES Mario games.
    RAYMAN should have been a sign post to support deeper game play experiences in the 32 bit generation but it remains an outlier

    I've played both the PS1 and Saturn versions of Rayman. I think the Saturn version was actually a little bit superior. The difficulty is what held it back a little, but it was still an awesome game!

    Great find on the 32X version in the other vid, and then this video makes me want to hunt down the Saturn version. I've found the platforming difficulty to be Super GnG levels of insane in previous attempts.
    On another note, while I knew one person with a Saturn in summer of 1995, we considered it's limited May release not a true launch but more of a test market while we waited for the Fall. You can see the Saturn's May release referred to as a pre-launch on Usenet as well. Criticising the May launch as a "failed" launch is the anachronistic tendancy of the internet. The internet lets test market releases of the NES, TG16, Genesis and other consoles slide, but suddently when the Saturn does it gets all arm chair CEO about it. I suspect this points to the intense levels of megacorp bias on the Net more than anything else. I find it more accurate to refer to September as the true Saturn launch, as this was when it would have been available at all retailers. The fact that Kaybee and Circuit City then chose to never carry Saturn, or they were paid to never carry it, is the only hole in this view.
    With the Sega CD going strong that year I almost waited, if the 32X had a couple of more Virtua Fighter quality releases that Fall as well I definitely would have waited. I played Saturn and Playstation at friend's houses and tried all of the uber hyped Sony platform stuff in particular but just wasn't as impressed as everybody said I should have been. Virtua Fighter 2 and Daytona had been in Arcades for a while by then, so I guess Wipeout and Toshinden just didn't have the "hot new" look most gamers thought they saw.
    Anybody who was actually into Arcades and Sega at the time had their hands full with Sega CD, 32X and Genesis releases while they tried out the slew of new Arcade games, 3DO and Jaguar games, not to mention some great Action games were finally coming out for SNES. I wanted to own it all, and saw the Saturn and PS1 as too early and too expensive until November of 1995 when VF2 and Sega Rally convinced me to buy a Saturn. The internet also tends to forget that Saturn was $299 from mid September on as well.

    This is seriously one of my favorite games of all time and I'm proud to have several versions of it. Except the Jaguar. I just can't convince myself to shell out for one game. Hoping I can emulate it someday instead.
    Rayman 2 similarly has various releases across various systems, all different in their own way. It's fascinating how Ubisoft spent time giving each version of these games their own personality.

    Love Rayman, I only own the PS1 version, so its interesting that the Saturn version is just as great. The fact that the Saturn version of Rayman didn't get nearly as much attention as the PS1's version is really telling to me though. Was the writing on the wall for the Saturn really there in September of 95?

    There are people out there who actually prefer the Jaguar version over the CD based versions. If you've played the Jag version, you know what I'm talking about: the sound effects and music are HORRID and absolutely ruin the game if you've played the CD ports. These people have VOTING RIGHTS. It's terrifying.

    I talk about how the game’s industry is hella sexist and I get told to get back into my slippers and take a nap, grandad. But then you show how the fairy differs from 1995 to 2011. In the 2011 one the has exposed midriff, tiny waste and large hips, lots of makeup and huge exposed breasts.
    Right up until 2020 women have become increasingly sexualised and objectified (simplified and diminished). I feel this trend MAY be reversing...

    • @PandaMoniumReviews
      @PandaMoniumReviews  3 роки тому +1

      It very well may be reversing, certainly modern devs are making an effort to lessen the use of sexualized characters. I think they will always be around on all ends of the gender spectrum, but its certainly better than how these things were before. Even though Ubisoft pulled this number in Rayman, you can still play through Assassins Creed Odyssey as a woman without DOA jiggle physics. It varies I guess. The sexism (with female characters) is still around, Depends on the game.
