As of Mary’s own notebook, you can tell how she is romaticising running with the gang, how she is running from the Duke instead of pinkertons and how she shouldn’t have ideas above her station, likely inspired by Grimshaw.
In beta you wear allowed to keep a copy of every single document in camp but in the end the only one they allowed was Dutch's speech notes and thats probably because the dev in charge of disabling that missed it. You can however get it through an exploit by picking it up, putting it down and quickly opening and closing the photo mode. You just have to be quick.
The horseshoe by Arthur's bed may also be a token from his horse that he had before the start of the game. I vaguely remember one of the gang members (maybe Charles?) offer his condolences to Arthur about a beloved mare of his that had passed and I think it was implied that it was in the blackwater incident. This comment was made at the very beginning of the game when Arthur had to borrow a horse from one of the other gang members. Many equestrians, even nowadays, often keep a horseshoe as a token of a steed that has passed. Given that the shoe is among other very sentimental tokens this makes the most sense to me.
I love how Dutch writes his note very properly, with correct-ish grammar, and great phrasing, but when he actually speaks he uses poor grammar and repetitive phrases, not what he wrote.
@Zedumbass24 in the very first mission of the game, the gang was actually having doubts, but had no choice but to stick around in the mountians....hosea, arthur, john, javier all mention as early as chapter 2 horshoe overlook how dutch is off and loosing it. how many mental declines has dutch had? Dutch was always like this.
If I remember correctly, Swanson’s “Bible” becomes an an actual Bible by the time the gang reaches Beaver Hollow as he is finally able to cut his addiction to morphine.
About the books that Dutch reads: Evelyn Miller is strongly inspired by Henry David Thoreau, a transcendentalist writer from the 19th century, the titles and the overall meaning of the books really ressemble his style. And maybe the Russian book and author are based on Dostoievsky's works?
Wow that detail of Dutch meticulously planning his speeches to gas up/gaslight 😂 the gang is awesome. He really was a cult leader. In another life he’d have made a good politician.
This game is so good I just can't stop feeling sad when I remember what happens to the gang We knew the gang was disbanded in 1899 back in Red Dead 1 but we didn't know how … how terrible this must have been to John's family before and even his former friends he grew up with We first met Javier, Bill and Dutch as his ennemies, we knew so little about their past, we knew they shared some sort of family past and memories in the gang but now, now we know they were much more than villains to John. I mean, they shared stories, secrets, mistakes, memories. They really were a family. It must have been terrible for all of them, watching the gang falling apart. It was a part of their life. And much more, the gang had members that were little by little forgotten, which adds even more pain. Heartbreaking. I love Red Dead.
Just doing the Serial killer Easter egg and before examining the knife on the ground, I noticed a zippo flip lighter beside the knife. They weren't created until the 1930s. Major time traveling element with Edmond
Wow! This is really interesting. I've always thought that Reverend Swanson was abusing morphine intravenously. However, he described the drug he was abusing as "that little, sticky, black devil" and "little lumps of Hell". Reverend Swanson wasn't talking about morphine. He wasn't talking about opium either. It is sticky, comes in lumps, but it's dark brown, not black. Since it wasn't morphine, and it wasn't opium, there's only one thing it could be, and it matches his description to a T: black tar heroin. It makes sense for the time period too.
Well, they were far too liberal with hard drugs back then. Still, it makes it all the better when you realize he got clean at the end of the game and became a preacher again.
Another nice little Easter egg you didn't mention is Pearson has a picture of the gang posing on a stagecoach hanging on the wall in the store after he takes it over. There are people in the picture that I don't recognize, so it might be Davey and Mac Callander. Jack is just a baby in it too.
I really like the character of Mary-Beth: not only do I think she is very beautiful, but also very good and kind. I thought that, as the story progressed, Arthur might fall in love with her. But his story with Mary is still very beautiful, just as she is beautiful too. In any case, I'm glad I found out those details about Mary-Beth's diary
