Ken so cool to hear you love fly fishing, I’m an avid fly fisherman and this is my first year really deep diving into bass and tournaments. BAD was the first bass fishing podcast that I really enjoyed and I’ve learned so much from you guys. Knew I liked it for a reason😂
Thank you, Michael! I LOVE fly fishing ... especially in small mountain streams. Give me a 3-weight or 5-weight and a Royal Wulff, and I'm off and running. Definitely a dry fly guy here ... if I can get away with it.
All but two of my rods are Dobyns casting rods, the other two are Abu Garcia Vendetta spinning rods (bought on sale). Eleven casting and the two spinning rods. Two Colts, three Mavericks, three fury's, two Sierra's, and one Savvy micro. The Champions are just outside my budget. I love my Dobyns rods.
Mixing the retail crowd with the wholesale crowd is a bad idea. Maybe the last day of ICAST could be open to the public. Like Japan does. It could be an instant market survey environment.
@secretbassrigs The B.A.S.S. MASTER CLASSIC has both wholesale & retail going at the same time. I have been with a Dealer to the CLASSIC. A Dealer only places their order at the show to be shipped from the distribution warehouse to the tackle shop. A retail purchase is made on the floor and carried out from the show. Private Wholesale & Trade Shows are a dying breed. Open to the public is the future. I have worked in the covention & display industry since the 1980's. Dentistry, Automotive, Commercial Printing, Signs & Graphics, Outdoor Hunting & Fishing, Rodeo PBR, Horses NCHA (That show last a month) Building Materials, Newspaper Publication, of these only the open to the public have survived. Believe it or not, even the Trade Show Industry has a Trade Show promoting trade shows, booths, and displays. It's a trade show about trade shows.
I love the Ugly Stik for catfishing and beach fishing. The moderate action is perfect for circle hooks and channel cats. I’m skeptical that an Ugly Stik won best in show when there were releases from companies like Shimano, Daiwa, and St Croix.
erichardin6056, you're forgetting that wholesale and retail buyers represent half of the vote (maybe more). They're going to vote for things they can sell, and the Ugly Stik is the best selling rod of all-time. Of course, it will have lots of support, and of course it should get every consideration.
Just a comment to a few posts below. Companies bring many existing product lines to the show, not just new products. Also, if the show is open to the public, on the last day of the show many companies will sell their show product at big discounts rather than having to repack and deal with it. I've seen many bait companies simply give baits away at the end of the show. Fishing rods are a real pain as we must put each rod into a plastic sleeve and retube them all. I'd love to sell every single rod at the end of a show at a 50-60% discount rather than repacking them. The attendees get a great deal and it saves us a lot of time and work. Honestly, by the end of a show, we're tired and ready to get back home.
Thank you, Gary -- for joining us on the show and for jumping into these comments. I stopped by GSM to see you on Thursday, but you were gone! So sorry I missed you! -- Ken
It's the rub shoulders moment for anglers, the only one (angling is not like a team game, it doesn't benefit from having a team dynamic). iCast is some attempt to give angling it's superbowl. What angling does have though is something else.
There is an inter-generational aspect to angling (grandchildren and grandparents, neighbours with neighbour, people from across social divides), that doesn't exist in other sports. Quite like in the way that it does in angling. Frank Scalish explained he took folks from UK to fish in Ohio. That's not as common in other sports, those bridges made between people.
Rick Clunn summed it up once, he found himself in a boat fishing with a major world leader, and the leader of his own nation. How else is that going to happen to a former oil and gas engineer from Texas?
@@academicmailbox7798angling is one of the few sports that is universal. It's more than just because fish are universal, it's because techniques are coveted and sought after by every angler around the world. It's the difference between commercial fishermen and sports anglers. The commercial fishermen guard their secrets as a matter of survival. The personal experiences I've been lucky enough to have on both coasts is fishing in highly trafficked tourist locations; The big pond in Central Park NYC and Venice Beach California. When I was doing well, the anglers couldn't help wanting to know more. I've met people from Japan, Indonesia, and Hong Kong, to Germany, Albania, italy, and the Netherlands. The hardcore guys knew a good bite when they saw one, and always took advantage of the opportunity to make a few quick casts whenever I offered my rod to them. No matter the language barrier. The communication was always fruitful with the right effort. Cool topic dude. Keep up the writing practice. People are reading whether they respond or not.
@academicmailbox7798 Even more the reason to open it up a few days for the public. Private trade shows are a dying breed... Public trade shows are on the rise. Associations need the numbers to afford $$$ the Venues.
WHAT'S KILLING THE INDUSTRY IS THE RAMPANT COPIES, WITHOUT CREDIT BEING GIVEN TO THE ORIGINAL CREATOR. It's already Goliath without David, lol. Best of show entries need to have more provenance.
@secretbassrigs manufacturers that don't have inventory ready for a major event are not going to be around in a few years. They won't need to be at the show anyway. Times have changed and are changing even more. 🍺🎣
This was awesome!! As someone in the industry , i actually came up with some ideas due to your conversations. thanks
Thank you, Mike! We aim to please ... and provoke thought!
Ken Duke has a great point. The Media should not have a vote. Or they should have separate best of show categories.
Absolutely!
Huge Gary Dobyns fan , wished more company owners was like him . Great show Mr duke . Hope you have a great Icast show.
Thank you, Allan. I'm a huge Gary Dobyns fan, too.
Gentlemen, you definitely picked the right panel and what a treat to hear the incredible conversation.Thank you Team Bass After Dark 👏👏❤
Thank you, Ken!
That’s a good dark thoughts quote, I’ve listened to it several times. Cheers a Tonewood.

Used to be a dream of mine to get to experience icast someday...

Also, I think "bumping elbows" is the idiom you're looking for to depict the camaraderie at ICast. Hopefully you get to go some day.

👀👀👍👍👍🔥🔥🔥
Move it to Texas? Middle ground.
It'll be a long time before it leaves the fishing-est place in America ... Florida.
Crush city wins all

Icast is bohemian grove east, know nothing see nothing
Lol! Elites feeling smug and looking down on the commoners. 😂
That’s great 😂

@secretbassrigs Not true, or the tire & wheel industry would have never made it past the caveman. Every tire & wheel 🛞 had been a copy of a "O".... 🍺🎣
Would having an Open to the Public Day be a possibility... to boast the show?
An open to the public day wouldn't be helpful to the public, because the inventory often doesn't exist yet.
@secretbassrigs manufacturers that don't have inventory ready for a major event are not going to be around in a few years. They won't need to be at the show anyway. Times have changed and are changing even more. 🍺🎣

Gary I totally test rods out for ya as being apart of the pro staff👀
The Senko would still be a boring display even after knowing how effective it is...
