Hello man! I'm one of your most recent subscribers: I've been really enjoying your content and your honesty (something lots of audiophiles really lack!). Rewatching all your videos about the K702 has reminded me why I decided to pick the K702 instead of the HD600 after comparing them side by side for weeks years ago. HD600 has excellent tonal balance and timbre accuracy, but K702 is just a special headphone: its spacious sound and surgical instrument separation is making me fall in love with it each time I use it. I also read your "Top 5 headphones" article and I agree with everything except for one small thing: I truly believe that K702 is great for all music genres, as much as both the HD600 and the Sundara. Yeah, both the Sundara and the HD600 may have more "body" and warmth (although some measurements of the K702 frequency response seem to tell otherwise) which might give them the edge for bassier recordings, but I found and I still find myself enjoying every kind of music on the K702, ranging from old school electronic music and dance to more acoustic genre, where the K702 truly shines and overshadows the other competitors. One more thing I agree with you is the misconception about the K702 being power hungry: I've always used a simple E10K on low gain with no bass boost and I've never felt like I lacked anything. I'm looking forward to your next videos. Cheers!
Hey man Thank you! Me too! I love the K702 and use it every day. You're so right there's just something about it that keeps you coming back. The separation, detail, Soundstage, and timbre are all excellent. I don't use my HD600 nearly as much anymore but I want to compare the 702 and 400se. I think the 702 is really really close to having timbre as good as a planar which is why it will always be relevant to me. So nice to hear someone else point out the fact that the 702 is fairly easy to drive! I'm also going to be shuffling that list soon so stay tuned :)
I sold my k712 Pro a year ago in the quest for a new favourite set. Now I'm circling back to k702 for some more bass. If they are close, which rtings says... Fantastic pair. Nothing is perfect, but these are really really great if you want neutral sounds with a big open soundstage.
I just tried out the K712 Pro and... it's not to my taste (to summarize: too much mids and too much treble and just overall sounds "weird" to me). I'm taking a look at the K702 and hearing from Stu that they sound kinda like a planar is encouraging since I like how a lot of planars sound but dislike the added weight of all those magnets.
@@PastafarianLemur Yeah it's an aquired taste :) Compared to DT for instance they are a lot more mid and treble heavy for sure. I love that. Not too big a fan of the overly bassy ones. These feel more balanced. Also, I wear glasses with thick frames. These do not hurt with glasses on. Most cans do.
@@godzoo18 Are u using an amp tho? I had the same experience with my PC38X before, and I was like there is no way this well-known headphone sounded like this after a get my topping dx3 pro+ then I feel like I was so stupid not to get one earlier
Great video yet again! I have the Austrian K701 with the bumps , I've gone through many many headphones including all the usual suspects from Sennheiser, Beyer, hifi man, etc etc and the one constant in my collection is the 701. But you're right this need AMPING! I drive mine with the K5 pro (ESS) on medium gain and juicing these up with an amp like that is a night and day difference! Don't judge these on an underpowered amp , they'll simply sound lifeless The bass is tight detailed and solid, mids are sublimely detailed , smooth highs and that incredible soundstage and instrument separation...end game for me personally Yes they can get loud underamped but that's not the point , amping them correctly solidifies the sound, adds texture and warmth , just a different headphone entirely
bought it a month ago off amazon, wiring solder came off within a month, returned them since i got them from amazon. The sound to me sounded amazing, not thin or shouty. It sounded right. Probably will order again. Ah and people wont tell you this in reviews the pads are hard, harder than you would expect, i got used to them even though i ordered memory foam replacements.
LOTS of recent Amazon reviews complain about horrid quality of the newer Made-in-China model. So much so that I'm completely scared off buying them, even at the ~$150 price point. (If it looks too good to be true....)
Hey man, thanks for the information about the K702. As usual great review, nice funny touch in it. People like you stay helpful, thanks for being part of the home studio community. Many greetings from the Nehterlands, Alex
Hi , I just want to say thank you!!!!! I have bought them after your reply to one of my comments. I bought them mainly for watching movies and music. Just got them now ( I know they need some burn in )and I am trying them with some movies and I am shocked by how good they are!! How can they be so much better than my hd660s costing 1/4 of the price??? The sonstage is amazing , the vocals super clear and the details :0 I might be doing the bass mod everyone is talking about. Again thank you so much for making this video and for recommending them to me in the comments section!!
I’ve fixed my mdr v6’s so now they use a removable 3.5mm wire on each earcup. I also have sheepskin pads and used a couple types of fabric to dampen them behind the driver and in front (the different pads and damping behind make them sibilant at times, but improve them in other ways). Thought you might be interested. Fairly pleasant sound, though quite picky about what you play. With a good recording it’s a well extended somewhat v shaped sound with decently wide soundstage. A decent sized peak at 10k, but not intolerable. Doesn’t necessarily actually sound like a closed back to me, but still just as isolating.
@@HomeStudioBasics after listening a while, my impressions are that the sound is extremely detailed with boosted bass and treble. Good for some genres like acoustic and electronic but not some others like rock. The dampening I used was 2 sheets of fabric maybe a little over millimeter thick, one slightly denser than the other. I put a circle of lighter fabric behind the driver, then in front I put a denser one, a lighter one, a denser one, and two lighter ones under the pads. Pads are brainwavz sheepskin.
My new headphones arrived yesterday! PLANARS BABY! Monolith M570 for $200. Wow.It is amazing how deeply I can "see" into the music. I can clearly hear the vibration of not only base strings but even the brass. If only I enjoyed listening to music. 😳
Hi Home Studio Basics, hope you are doing well! I replied to you on facebook 3 weeks ago, eagerly awaiting your reply :) I have had my Hifiman 400i 2020 version for a couple of weeks now, and I really enjoy them. Compared to the Sennheiser 6XX, they sound more clear and with a much bigger soundstage. I also enjoy their thumping bass. Overall I would say they are a very fun sounding pair of headphones. The only downside is I can't wear them for long. I get a hotspot on the top of my head from the headband. One day I wrapped a woolen scarf around the headband, and that solved the comfort issue.
I just bought the K702 to replace my BD DT 770 Pro, and i am more than happy..the Beyerdynamics sound quite muffled and unbalanced in comparison. The sound stage and resolution of the K702 is simply amazing..i will never get back to Beyerdynamic for sure!
bought this headphone in May brand new for $58 they sounded flat and kinda lame but after 2 month of usage they startet to "warm up" and the comfort is great !
I have had K702 for more than 3 years, initially I used it without an amplifier by plugging it straight into my computer, a few months ago I started using them with a new desktop I bought that has a built in DAC/amplifier and the sound that comes out of it now is on new level. Richer in every possible way with more bass,
hey man, I know it’s late but did you find the volume acceptable? I found a deal for 70€ for these and I would use these for my Xbox Series X and iPhone 8. Will the volume be good without an amp?
@@carinnnx7734 hi Regarding iPhone 8 I am not sure. Unlikely that iPhone 8 has a good enough inbuilt DAC to support these headphones. I know one the Sony phones recently released has a good amplifier built into it. Regarding your Xbox series X all I can say is from my own experience. I have a ps5 and I have tried plugging the headphones into the controller but the audio is crap and not even stereo. Then I plugged these K702's into the TV's 3.5mm headphone jack and the sound was much better and stereo. Games usually require 3D sound so that was very much needed. I guess it depends on the TV you have and if it has a good audio jack that provided enough power to the headphones. My TV is Sony A8G.
I have been watching headphone reviews for the last 3 weeks and most reviews I have listened reading and whatced in regards to these 702 headphones are wrong in my opinion regarding the sound signature. I really appreciate your take on these headphones as I can't disagree with anything you said in regards to the sound of these cans. Most of the reviews say the bass is weak but I think the bass is very accurate, and as you stated these are well worth owning. I appreciate your opinion on these cans and I have purchased them and I really like the sound. I wonder what you think of the Sennheiser 6xx ? If you would send me a comment that would be much appreciated as I trust your opinion! Ps I also purchased the Koss HP you recommended I am positive I will like them as well.
K702 is compelling, very compelling, enough for me to reconsider buying a Sundara. They do have QC issues and the pads are really expensive and wear rather quickly, these however I've heard don't have those issues plus they are almost 135 dollars cheaper than a Sundara in India.....AND I think I might enjoy movies and games more on these. hmmm.... What's your take on this Stu? I want to own an open-back as well. Personally I already have a DT770 Pro 80ohm and I use Oratory1990's EQ that I always end up tweaking, to have more mids and body/warmth (350 to 2k region, I like good detailed bass but too much bass isn't my jam, the bass when tamed on the 770 pros is very tastefully textured and impactful, I want that but not in such quantity with my next headphone). These are more compelling to me for those reasons and you say they have planar like timbre as well....honestly it's hard to justify buying a Sundara over these to me right now as I could get a Zen Dac if I add a little more to that 135 that I may save if I go with the k702.
Yeah the Sundara is high on my list sound wise but everything you said is certainly true and still a concern. I'll tell you this: you won't have to worry about that stuff with the 702 that's for sure. HIFIMAN has improved a lot but they still have some work to do on the QC side of things (and those ridiculous pads). It's a shame a company like Dekoni has to manufacture the pads that HIFIMAN should make. I feel bad for people paying all that money just to get the proper pads. Movies and games yes the 702 is better for me. Great all-around headphone and one you'll keep around for a long time. I think you should go for it: homestudiobasics.com/before-you-buy-an-akg-k702-read-this/
some people on reddit say this headset is very good for first person shooter gaming becouse of the wide range and how accuracte can place sounds so you can hear enemy footsteps and know exacly what direction they comming from any experience whith this? becouse they are same price as some gaming headsets wonder if this is a better choice
I love them for gaming and yes that is my experience in COD Warzone. Definitely skip the headsets and go for the 702. homestudiobasics.com/before-you-buy-an-akg-k702-read-this/
My man Stu, I love your videos and I need your wise council pleaseeee!! Two questions: 1) The K702 has a mini-XLR connection which is a 3 pin, are you able to get a balanced STEREO signal out of this to say a Fiio K3, which is a 2.5mm Balanced TRRS port?? So basically what Im asking is how do you do a balanced output signal on the K702 with its 3 pin mini-XLR and what cables would you need because these are very difficult to find, even your adapter link below does not exist anymore. I have read that you cannot get a balanced stereo signal out of a 3 pin mini-XLR, only mono signal?? Is this true, please elaborate. This will be for gaming. 2) When are you going to review the new 2021 Fiio K3? To see how this compares to the K5 Pro, ifi Zen V2, and even the DragonFly Red, etc considering it uses the ES9038Q2M dac chip, same as Dragonfly Cobalt.... Hardly anyone has reviewed this yet, wonder why....
Since it uses a 3 pin mini xlr you can’t use it with balanced outputs. You can try to mod it and replace it with a 4 pin mini xlr to be able to use it with balanced outputs but I wouldn’t want to risk damaging it and modding the k702 would more than likely void the warranty
when you directly plug headphones into a computer what sample rate should you be selecting? 24 bit, 48000 hz? or something higher like 24 bit 192000 hz?
Great video. I listen to Metal and techno as well as play fps games. Which is better 702 or 712 also love huge sound stage. My dac stac sh6 su6 smsl and sound blaster g6
Hey man! More bass roll off in K240, less treble. Definitely a flatter, leaner sound. I don't like the 612 at all but I'd go with 702. I like the K240 and still have a 600 Ohm version here (M), but don't use it much because of comfort. 702 all the way! homestudiobasics.com/before-you-buy-an-akg-k702-read-this/
Any recommendations for cable replacement? The short one still works great but the long one is 3m and I need at least 4 or 5m. It's the Austrian one. Thank you!
Stulichnaya my vodka lovin bro.. personal question.... akg 712, meze classic 99s OR Dan Clark Aeon flow for GENERAL all purpose listening into a receiver, headphone amp for general movie , music listening?? thank you reference listening is already taken care of via RAAL headphones, but just general purpose.. what would be your choice of my 3 listed...
Wow what a tough decision! I think it comes down to Meze or Dan Clark. And THAT'S tough. I demoed the 99's a few weeks ago and they were fantastic. I may lean towards those as they're a bit more affordable but the Aeon is def the best closed back I've heard but the 99 is challenging it for that spot. I will be demoing the 99 more as I haven't gotten quite enough time with it for a review yet.

Great video and info, as I’m planning to buy one! But have you had the chance (or someone reading this) to conpare it with the Q701? How does the K702 compares with the Q701? I’ve read contraditory reviews: some say the Q has more bass, some say they sound exactly the same...
I still prefer K702 actually and plan on selling my K612. homestudiobasics.com/before-you-buy-an-akg-k702-read-this/ Here's my explanation of why I don't like the 612: homestudiobasics.com/before-you-buy-a-k612-read-this/
@@HomeStudioBasics I actually read the showdown you did of the 600-700 series AKG headphones and I ordered the K702. They should be here Monday. I appreciate your help and great content btw
@@HomeStudioBasics so I got my headphones yesterday and they are super super quite connected directly into my mobo which has the "ALC1220-VB" in it. I've never bought a Amp or anything so it's new to me
Come on man. Steve was selling Advent speakers when your dad was in grade school. Okay, he does hate powered speakers on principal. I hate ice cream trucks.
What a crazy timing! I was just researching these and was watching your old video comparing these with k612 and others ! Watching this video now , I currently own hd660s and dt770pro + dt990pro as main 3 and I am trying to talk myself if adding k702 makes any sense haha I did own k612 but didn’t find them good enough to keep in addition to the 3 I own already . It almost sounds like maybe k702 is worth adding still … hmm 🤔
Hey man yeah! I do think the 702 would complement those nicely if you listen to softer genres like Jazz, Classical, Folk, Acoustic, and stuff like that. :)
What is your opinion of DT990Pro? I have been stalking those a while at now and im thinking to buy a set just for gaming and etc. Are those so good what ppl are saying or should i just skip those and get the T1 gen1/gen2 somewhere?
Idk you should ask this guy xD ua-cam.com/users/Nouvraught He lovveeeesssss the 990. They are good! I would get one, but check this article first: homestudiobasics.com/beyerdynamic-dt770-vs-880-vs-990/

Akg 702, Akg 712, hd560s, dt 900 pro x are some choices I have come up with based on research. I will be using a sounblasterx g6 plus I have a bit of a bigger head so comfort is king. Thanks👍
Thanks man! Much appreciated. I would probably stick with DEVA, but it's close and I still use a K702 every day when I'm not demoing other stuff. Hey man it's about medium. I noticed recently that if I'm laying down on the couch about to pass out watching a movie they tend to move around but that's kind of to be expected. When you're just listening to music or watching film they don't clamp hard but they're also not loose.
Have you had the opportunity to listen to the planar Monoprice Monolith M1070 or the vilified but great sounding Verum 1 Mk II? Both reviewed as giving the LCD-2 a run for the money. this headphone has a downside tho. the adjustable headband thing. If u hang your headphones. hang on the plastic and not the leather. it will stretch the elastic string and it will not be able to pull it back. Also the string dont last very long. Luckily it still has decent clamp force but it wont sit on yr head very well. So becareful how u hang it

Thank you so much man and you're welcome! Keep me posted!
Nice! I've been wanting to do that mod for awhile now! I was planning on getting a 7506 (as I don't own the V6 anymore and it's been discontinued).
Just purchased these based on your recommendation! Thank you
Hey man keep me posted on your impressions and thanks a bunch! :)
My new headphones arrived yesterday! PLANARS BABY! Monolith M570 for $200. Wow.It is amazing how deeply I can "see" into the music. I can clearly hear the vibration of not only base strings but even the brass. If only I enjoyed listening to music. 😳
HAHA. Enjoy music? Who does THAT anymore?
Hi Home Studio Basics, hope you are doing well!
I replied to you on facebook 3 weeks ago, eagerly awaiting your reply :)
I have had my Hifiman 400i 2020 version for a couple of weeks now, and I really enjoy them.
I'm on it! Hope you're well too man!
How reassuring, I bought a pair of these in a Black Friday sale, I love them!
Yeah def one of my favorites! Glad you're enjoying them :)
how to wear original ear pads correctly? thick at the back, thin at the front?
I just bought the K702 to replace my BD DT 770 Pro, and i am more than happy..the Beyerdynamics sound quite muffled and unbalanced in comparison. The sound stage and resolution of the K702 is simply amazing..i will never get back to Beyerdynamic for sure!
How do the AKG K702 compare to Hifiman edition XS?
bought this headphone in May brand new for $58 they sounded flat and kinda lame but after 2 month of usage they startet to "warm up" and the comfort is great !
I have had K702 for more than 3 years, initially I used it without an amplifier by plugging it straight into my computer, a few months ago I started using them with a new desktop I bought that has a built in DAC/amplifier and the sound that comes out of it now is on new level. Richer in every possible way with more bass,
Nice! I def want to get a dedicated Amp for mine like maybe the Heed can amp :)
hey man, I know it’s late but did you find the volume acceptable? I found a deal for 70€ for these and I would use these for my Xbox Series X and iPhone 8. Will the volume be good without an amp?
@@carinnnx7734 hi
Regarding iPhone 8 I am not sure.
@@OmerAbdulahChowdhary ok thank you. The sound in the Ps5 was crap? can you explain please? I’d appreciate it so much thank you
@@carinnnx7734 the sound coming from the headphone jack in the controller. Otherwise ps5 console itself has no headphone jack.
This was an excellent descriptive review. I just purchased a pair. Thanks very much!!
Hi, just a quick question..Are the ones that you are reviewing made in Austria or China? Thanks.
They are the one made in China cause they have detachable cable and they are black. Made in Austria were blue with no detachable cable.
I think you should go for it: homestudiobasics.com/before-you-buy-an-akg-k702-read-this/
@@HomeStudioBasics Thank you my man. I did want one that would last me a while, it's one of the reasons why I went with the beyers.

My man Stu, I love your videos and I need your wise council pleaseeee!! Two questions:
1) The K702 has a mini-XLR connection which is a 3 pin, are you able to get a balanced STEREO signal out of this to say a Fiio K3, which is a 2.5mm Balanced TRRS port??
HI,
a stupid question, is worth using them (for gaming) without equalizer/amplifier?
I wish my phone and dongle DAC would drive these. I’d love a pair. Excellent review
How do they sound
I'm considering switching from my M50x's to a pair of these. How would you say they compare?
when you directly plug headphones into a computer what sample rate should you be selecting? 24 bit, 48000 hz? or something higher like 24 bit 192000 hz?
Hey man 24/44 or 24/48 is more than enough. homestudiobasics.com/what-is-dsd-in-audio/

New camera coming sometime this century lol. Thanks man!
Hi Stu, I doubt between 701 or 702. Which one do you recommend on your own experience? Thanks
both are the same.
Greetings friend. What can you say about the K240 MK II in comparison with these headphones, how much do they lose to the 612 and 702?
Thank you!
I haven't actually replaced mine as it's super long and I can easily use it for gaming. :) I don't know how long mine is but I can measure it.
