When I was learning to fly whenever cleared to land I put engine to idle, carb heat on and glided to the runway. After a while figured could set that little Cessna down on a dime. They teach you to arbitrarily use more flaps, I used flaps to control the decent angle. Overshoot, more flaps, Undershoot, leave them where they are.
