Cat Stevens is one of my favorite singer/songwriters. Looking forward to you discovering more of his music. 💜
His voice still has gravitas today. Such great recordings, crisp, clean and real.
Cat Stevens, I really admire so much about his music, so poetic, so deep. Please check out Wild World or Sad Lisa, great tunes. Thanks Asia and BJ.
My two favourite albums of his are Tea For the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat. However there are wonderful songs too on his later albums like Buddha and the Chocolate, Catch Bull at Four, Numbers and Foreigner that hardly get a mention 🤔
BJ you hit the 🎯 again. It is about leaving a decent future for our children not just thinking of ourselves. Much of it has to do with the rich and powerful how they are taking away all the good on this earth so their won’t be any land or playgrounds just shopping malls and parking lots.
Yep. Coz it means money. 😔
‘You’ is you Asia. You are destroying this planet along with me and every one of us. This song was 50 years ahead of its time. If only we had listened to the poet!
From Songfacts:
In this anti-pollution song, Cat Stevens admits we've progressed a long way through technological advances, but in doing so, he protests that we have destroyed much of our environment by trucks "pumping petrol gas" and by building over and cementing our children's play areas in cities.
Stevens grew up in London, where open spaces for children to play were rare. As a schoolboy, his playground was in a basement with little exposure to the open air. When he read a story in Time Out London about how green spaces were vanishing in towns, it prompted him to write the song as a reminder that progress shouldn't come at the expense of nature.
Back when children played outside, in nature.
@@izzonj the kids in my neighborhood do- we have a 10 mph speed limit due to all the kids on scooters, bikes, roller blades, or just playing.
Also ... Not @ the expense of a child's chilhood ...
I would understand it like you but it goes farther
He's talking about us. When do we stop to think of our children and the earth we leave them
I'd expand on that...every generation creates more, bigger, better. Taking nature for BS solar and wind, subdivisions...roads more and more...where is the nature for children to play in.
Such a powerful message. Cat always makes us think.
You should really watch the cult classic movie Harold & Maude. The soundtrack is the Cat Stevens album Tea for the Tillerman. The movie is hysterical and well worth the watch!!!
Yes, it’s getting precious little attention from most reactors and it deserves better.
One of my top ten favourite movies of all time! I agree, it's essential viewing. :)
One of my all time favorite movies ! I’m sure that I’ve watched it at least 50 times. I think I will be watching it again today!
@@jdw9397 I think it showed in a Minneapolis movie theater for months back in the day.
@@maryerpenbach9517 I’ve watched it at least 50 times. It’s been awhile-time to watch again!
Great writer and singer.
Please do more Cat Stevens! He is so talantes and rich in his storytelling. Always on my playlist!
My favourite song of cat stevens . So beautiful .
You just fell into a hole kids. When you hear his other songs you will be amazed.
You pretty much got the meaning of this song. When I was a teenage boy in the early seventies, I totally understood the meaning of this song. I loved the song, but it also made me cry hearing it.
The song is about over building, and polluting to the point where there are no longer places that children can just go outside and play safely. It is about what we lose when we over build, and overuse technology, and chemicals.
So awesome and meaningful!
Tea for the Tillerman a great album
What a meaningful song.Mindblowing 😍👏
Hard headed woman, father and son or wild world are great. So many good songs!
Nearly all the songs that people comment on are from Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat albums. What about Buddha and the Chocolate Box, Catch Bull at Four, Numbers and Foreigner albums? Some wonderful songs there as well, but hardly get a mention 😒
Don't forget Morning has Broken. The most beautiful song.
All his music was big in the 70's. Check it all out. Songs like Hard headed woman and moonshadow.
Cat Stevens has amazing songs, look into him, you'll love him!!!! Peace train, father and son, morning has broken etc.....many more!!!
So many good Cat Stevens songs, The Wind, Moonshadow, Morning has broken, wild world, How can I tell you, Oh very young, How can I tell you and so many, many more. He is one of my favorite singers and has been since I first heard him in the 70's. If this is your first time hearing him then you have a long list to choose from and I am sure you will really like most of what he sang if not all.
An awesome song, one of my favorites from Cat Stevens. Dolly Parton did a great remake of it on her "Vintage" album. Another favorite of mine is Sad Lisa. Thanks for this reaction! ❤️
Do a deep dive on his early music. Nice ride.
I am happy my parents liked his music which introduced me to it way back in the early 70s. I still have some CD's of collections of his.
Cat Stevens gonna always tell you a story so you gotta listen
Asia you are the prettiest kitten I've ever seen !
He's simply talking about the striving to make ourselves more comfortable and life easier neglects how all this progress is crowding out an essential ingredient for a child's ability to grow, to interact normally and learn from doing.
You would love his song, "Peace Train" 😉 unique vocals, gifted songwriter. He did whole soundtrack to a Good movie for your movie reactions - "Harold and Maude" a classic 🔥 he's also talking about so much concrete and material things being built and technology, there won't be any room for Parks or playgrounds.😉
I worked for Cat Stevens for nearly a decade and know his catalogue well. This has always been my favourite of all his songs. Check out some of his newer stuff, released just in the name Yusuf.
He means it literally
I actually get dewy eyed watching young people experiencing these classics for the first time .
I think he's talking about mother earth.
Listen to MILES FROM NOWHERE. Also OH VERY YOUNG
Love the Detroit hat! The D rocks!
The collective "you." 𝐔𝐬.
You need to listen to his entire repertoire...
Scientists are telling us that we are using resources like we have 1.7 planets, by 2050 it will be 2 planets. We do not really recycle, we use and create waste. The climate is changing, the ozone layer is still shrinking... Where do the children play, where will they play, how will they live?
A great song for sure ! The whole album is great one of the first I bought Tea for the Tillerman ! Try Father and Son and Hard Headed Women I think you would love
One of Cat’s best. Love his range.
They play on the internet. A dangerous playground.
Cat Stevens aka Steven Demetre Georgiou aka Yusuf Islam
U reacted to his song father and son
Progress and convenience, but at what cost? (And what are our priorities?)
the meaning seems pretty simple to me. he's not a fan of progressive-ism when the basic needs of humanity aren't being met. If children aren't embraced, tended to, cared for, then what kind of future do we have?
This song was so far ahead of it's time, imo. Think about it today and where do the children actually play. In their dark rooms with their heads buried in a technological fantasy world. They go outside and there is nothing but concrete and pavement, usually with garbage laying around. And the adults are too busy working to make ends meet so the kids don't know what it's like to actually just go out into nature and play. Most of the lakes, rivers and ponds in and around the cities are now "off limits" because of pollution and raw sewage. Kids don't even know what it's like to enjoy the simplicity of going fishing or swimming.
I just don't get why anyone would want to read a song, especially on a first listen
There have been many talented singer/songwriters, Cat Stevens was one of the best, and wrote some of the most beautiful songs.
Asia and BJ, Cat is talking about all of the spaces in our environment being taken up with other things, i.e.; cosmic trains and the like, where are the Children suppose to play and be children, (remember this was 1970 when it was safe for kids to go out and play). Hope that helps. See ya
Cat Stevens was the biggest thing in the world in the seventies, love him as he is a great singer/songwriter !!!!! Give his "Peace Train" a listen.
The word that best describes Cat's music is "earnest". Not just earnest, but EARNEST. He was very good at being very serious in a very melodious way. He wasn't really a protest singer, but he wrote a number of beautiful protest songs, this one paramount among them. In this song, at least as far as I understand it, he's speaking with the basic voice of youth speaking to the "powers that be", the adults, the ones who let things get so bad and don't seem to care how bad they are. (This is an eternal generational battle, going back a long, long time.) Another song of this type but more hopeful is "Peace Train". I think you'd like that one very much. It became something of an anthem. :)
Very well said. 💜
Yes, a great comment, there are many mentions of songs from Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat albums, which l agree are probably his best two albums. However he wrote many wonderful songs on later albums like Buddha and the Chocolate Box, Catch Bull at Four, Numbers and Foreigner that hardly get a comment, there is another beautiful track on Buddha album called King of Trees, another 'protest' song and one my favourites.
Peace Train , yes!
@@keithjones7390 Oh yes. Catch Bull at Four is one of his best, in my opinion.
Well said, I Was in high school, we were seekers then, trying to figure out What was Going On...Vietnam, Civil Rights, Women's Rights. Cat Steven's music was a Anthem to us...we would analyze His meaning...
Helpful to so many of us struggling...Bob Dylan, was like a Spiritual Leader...
Y'all wanna really experience this man?!... Hear *"Morning Has Broken"* Stunning beauty.
Lord knows I love my hard jam. But Cat Stevens music is hippy heaven. Just so peaceful and beautiful. Nothing else like it.
Cat Stevens has tons of great songs to review.
This song off his "Tea For the Tillerman" record, his best effort I think. Inducted into the Rock and Roll HOF in 2014. His most well-known song was Father and Son, but he wrote many hits. Must listens: Hard Headed Woman, Wild World, Moonshadow, and Peace Train. Saw him live in Memhis, TN in 1975 when he was very young and vibrant. His voice has always captivated me. Thanks for reacting.
You neglected one of his best and best known "must listen" songs: Morning Has Broken.
Peace Train! Wild World! Morning Has Broken! and many many many many more!
So many great songs as well on albums Buddha and the Chocolate Box, Catch Bull at Four, Numbers and Foreigner. They hardly get a mention, l too think Tea For the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat are probably his best two albums, but some great stuff on his later albums as well!
Cat Stevens is a forgotten jem in the singer songwriter era.
Sooo many wonderful songs to try from him! Some of my favorites are "Father and Son" "Hard Headed Woman" "Oh Very Young" "On The Road To Find Out" "The First Cut is the Deepest" "If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out" and "Miles From Nowhere"🎶 That should get you started but be sure to keep your eyes open for "Longer Boats" "Morning Has Broken" and "Moonshadow" too.😊
You've mentioned some great songs there! Two albums that l love of his don't get as many comments, they are Buddha and the Chocolate Box and Catch Bull at Four, some wonderful songs on those two as well. Sun/C79, King of Trees and Oh Very Young as you mentioned, one of my favourite songs of his. The Boy With a Moon and Star on His Head and 18th Avenue from Catch Bull at Four two more favourites. Some lovely music on Numbers and Foreigner albums too that hardly get a mention 😏
And my favourite of his: Morning Has Broken
Have always love Cat Steven's music. He is a great singer songwriter with a very unique sounding voice. One of my first albums I ever bought was his "Tea For The Tillerman". The whole album is great. So is the album "Teaser & The Firecat". He has had so many great songs in his career such as "Matthew & Son", "The First Cut Is The Deepest", "Father & Son", "Wild World", "Moonshadow", "Peace Train", "Morning Has Broken" etc. He is still recording & performing live & his voice still sounds great.
The first Cat Stevens album l bought was Buddha and the Chocolate Box, still one of my favourites of his. That album, Catch Bull at Four, Numbers and Foreigner hardly get a mention, but contain many more wonderful songs that hardly anyone comments on.
Do you notice what the songs did back in the 70's? They were not about the high notes or the endless runs, It was about the story and the journey. The songs took you to a special place that only lived inside of you and nowhere else.
Absolutly.
My sister and I played his "Greatest Hits" album from the 70's over and over again. I can't wait for you to do more from him. He is a lyrical genius!
Every song on "Tea For The Tillerman" is excellent. This one is a favorite of mine. My 7th grade home room teacher (would have been 1973) had a poster in our classroom with the lyrics to this song on it. I'm a Cat fan from very far back!
He is a legend!!
He's got such a great voice , this was an album track.
Yes, and though many beautiful songs from Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat are mentioned, how about Buddha and the Chocolate, Catch Bull at Four, Numbers and Foreigner albums? Some wonderful songs on those albums too that hardly get a comment!😒
OMG...! Tea For The Tillerman is such a great great album...
Yes, and Teaser and the Firecat too. Not many mentions though for Buddha and the Chocolate, Catch Bull at Four, Foreigner and Numbers, some wonderful songs on those albums as well!
@@keithjones7390 Keith, I think I might have to get those CD's again. My regret is that I had Cat Steven's Live-1976... My ex took that one...
This is a dig on over development and industrialization. After all the progress, where do the children play?
Two excellent Cat Stevens songs for your reactions might be Two Fine People, and Father and Son. : )
Listen to more of Cat. So talented. Great reaction!
Such a great old song...
Hes saying "you can do and get anything you want." You the listener. You are free.
Not "the powers that be."
You literally flipped the song on its head with some class warfare crap.
You are free!
Hes telling you youre free!
But now that you are free, take care of the earth.
It's really depressing to see people totally missing the point of a song, especially when the message is so crystal clear. It's about the harm people do to the environment in the name of progress. And yes, he is being literal. Airports, highways, skyscrapers...etc. leave nowhere for children to play. Traffic fumes pollute the atmosphere. The "you" of the song means the people who are responsible for damaging and polluting - that includes all of us to varying degrees. Again, it's depressing and disturbing that this needs to be spelt out.
Love cat Stevens music. Maybe consider playing his song The first cut is the deepest.
He was masterful story teller with a rather unique voice. A great rabbit hole to go down
When looking for " Foreigner Suite " look for the orig version 18 minutes long 🤙🤙🤙
Now you have to watch Harold and Maude. You won't regret doing so.
May I deeply suggest Morning has broken
Please react to "When the Children Cry", by White Lion
Cat Stevens has many fine songs for you to explore.
Cat has endless great songs. Usually, every song on his album is top notch.
"Tea for the Tiller Man" is an amazing album, you won't be disappointed!!! 😃
A great story teller.
Love his song "Father and Son"
I've grown up listening to Cat Stevens, great singer/songwriter. His lyrics are still, if not more, relevant today. His performance at Glastonbury last year was so emotional, had me in tears ❤
He's got alot of songs : Wild World - My Lady D'arbanville - Morning Has Broken - Father And Son - Peace Train - Moonshadow - How Can I Tell You - On The Road To Find Out - I Love My Dog - Miles From Nowhere - If You Want To Sing Out , Sing out -Hard Headed Woman - Oh Very Young - The Wind - The First Cut Is The Deepest - Can't Keep It In - Into The White - Foreigner Suite " enjoy the list !! 🤙🎸
Most comments on Cat Stevens' albums refer to Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat albums. So many wonderful songs on later albums like Buddha and the Chocolate Box, Catch Bull at Four, Numbers and Foreigner.
This song comes from his Tea For The Tillerman album. It was 1 of 2 different albums I had that I absolutely wore out & had to buy a 2nd copy. Great stuff!
Tea For the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat l think are his two best albums. However Buddha and the Chocolate Box, Catch Bull at Four, Numbers and Foreigner are wonderful too, but get very little mention 😒
A lot of the lyrics to his songs still resonate to this day. More Cat, please.
There are better songs to introduce you to Cat Stevens. Songs like Wild World and Father and Son are better introductions.
There are so many comments on songs from Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat albums which are two wonderful records. However not many comments on Buddha and the Chocolate Box, Catch Bull at Four, Numbers and Foreigner albums which also contain some absolutely beautiful songs, Oh Very Young, King of Trees, The Boy With the Moon and Star on His Head, 18th Avenue, Novim's Nightmare, How Many Times, The Hurt, just to name a few. 😏
Cat make me cry
Love his music
OMG I love you dears! .. how did you find this? this is where my heart dwells... i do notice that everyone is to afraid to react to 'longer boats' ... just saying
This song was released in 1972 and back then as the song state's "I know we've come a long way,we're changing Day to Day" seems like everything is changing even faster these days. And still yet, where do the children play.🎶
Another song in this vein is Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell. Both songs talk about the increasing industrialization that is taking over peoples lives.
Try "I Love My Dog", "Angelsea" &
"Freezin' Steel" also by Cat Stevens you won't be disappointed I promise.
Oh He is talking literally.
As a Grandma, I'll tell you where the childreplay, in non natural spaces created by adults.
They are talking about how progress, planes, cars, buildings- pollution, paving over all the grass, damaging earth- where will the children play, when everything's gone?
Cat Steven's was always searching, always wondering, trying to figure IT out. Check out about his life.
Should check out "Morning has Broken", "Peace Train", "Sad Lisa"
I think he's referring to The Man, and society's striving for more and more modernization -- cutting down trees, paving over the fields and parks, more roads, more smog, but rendering the world less natural, less pleasant, and with much less space for the children to play! He starts off talking about building hi-speed transport, then mentions getting heat by the flip of a switch. But all that takes a toll on our livable space.
If you like a more lively, reggae style, listen to Big Mountain's cover of "Where Do the Children Play?"
I will say this very few acknowledge comments from their subscribers. Don't care how y'all do it but you do acknowledge your subscribers. And that little thing goes along way in telling something about y'all. One of my favorites open minded and fun loving Augusta Ga
As civilization paves over the world, there's' fewer places for the children to play...my thought here..
yes, please more Cat Stevens and keep in mind his songs are from a different time and place. Always love you guys.
It's kind of interesting to see some confusion of what is meant. I think that hearing this song in 1970, the thought of "where do the children play" was immediately recognized as where are the open, outdoor places for children to play and explore. Contrasted with jumbo planes, long roads and skyscrapers we knew this was about urban development vs nature.
Today, I'm not sure that people's first thoughts are of outdoor spaces when they think of children playing.
