  • In the middle of acquiring a new bike I wondered, "Why ARE road bikes/TT bikes so expensive?" Are they actually pricy to manufacture, or just marked-up to a ridiculous premium and we're willing to pay the price? I review the reasons why road/TT bikes are expensive, and the costs that go into creating these high end bicycles.

The real question is why are entry level mtbs cheaper than entey level roadbikes when entry level mtbs come with shimano deore, rockshox judy, and hydraulic brakes and on the other hand, you have alloy frame roadbikes slapping claris and sora on themselves and calling it a day. And then these roadbikes are just as expensive as an mtb

Give me an example where a mtb with rockshox and deore is cheaper than a road bike with sora

But then how come they can make entry level mountain bikes so cheap? Whereas a road bike with Shimano 105 or Sram Apex starts at $1000.

Shipping companies charge by volume, not weight, so reducing weight is of no benefit for shipping costs. Whatever you can fit into one standard shipping container is what the shipping companies will transport.

    great video.
I don't see segment where people can get light aluminium/alloy road bikes. without more fuss about being aerodynamic. and generic. which can be mas produced. solving issues for beginners. who are forced to choose hybrid / mountain bikes.
just my thoughts. I maybe wrong. if you feel so do feel free to correct me.

No bike 🚴 is worth over $2500 after that you are paying for the name, a model & etc. kind of like good average pair of Nikes valued around $80 verses the $450 pair of Jordans. Cost them a little over $5 to make at a Chinese factory and also the very same factory they make $15 pair of shoes. Lol

i bought a China fat bike at only US$148 with shock absorbers at front and back wheels and with 21 speeds and 4 inch tyres ,
and also bought a mountain bike at only US$ 148 with shock absorbers at front and back wheels and with 21 speeds,
and i am very happy with my purchase,
as my China bikes are so stable and i can now ride down low level staircases,
and a great value for my money ,
and i am very amused when i see others spending a few thousand dollars for similar mainstream bikes,
and i wont be surprised that most mainstream branded bikes are made in China,
but marked up by a few tens of thousands percent profit margins by mainstream brands ,
just because of the mainstream brand
    hahahahaha :)
China bikes are wonderful value for money ,
and wonderful for those who dont want to over pay for bikes .
    Some people are so silly,
to pay a huge profit margin to mainstream brands,
Who simply paint on a mainstream brand,
for bikes which are actually made in China ,
and then collect huge profits from naive gullible people who over pay just because of the western brands .

I just bought a trek Domane SL6 and a Checkpoint SL5 - both carbon with better than 105 gears eta. Worth every damn penny. You mentioned cost fo materials and that all carbon bikes are of different quality levels - that’s true bu the real reason carbon bikes are so expensive is the manual layup process done by hand.

You're absolutely right, thanks for further clarifying! There's a few videos out there to show how meticulous this process can be.

The price of bikes have gone up tremendously since the pandemic. I hope it is due to the labor shortage & production slow downs and not just bicycle manufacturers taking advantage of the situation. A good aluminum bike with decent components is getting hard to come by for a fair price. I would advise anyone getting (back) into riding to maybe consider a used bike. The push towards carbon fiber bikes is pushing the price higher & higher. Go back to using steel for the frame material. I have a Breezer Venturi that I got for almost half price because it was a new six year old bike that nobody wanted - with Shimano Ultegra components!
