- BLACK CRUSADER sound playing at 'Hillfields Happening' Carnival - Coventry, UK - 1991.........
This sound was started in Coventry, UK in the 1970s by Briggy (owner & manager) and was known as ''KING ALPHA'' - but changed its name around 1989 when it also started clashing dubplate style with all the big sounds in the UK......
The roll call of djs on this video includes : Trixie Banton from Killamantaurus sound, Manchester, UK (in the red & black tracksuit & baseball cap) and also Black Crusader's wicked local Coventry DJ 'Daddy Coconut' (in the light blue T - shirt)..... with Tippa Ranks as the main micman/MC on the sound .....
Great video. This is the Hillfields I remember. It's funny to think a lot of people in this Video are now in their late 50's and probably left the city years ago. The Caribbean community in Coventry was probably at its strongest at this point. There was a thriving Nightlife and there appeared to be more unity. Don't get me wrong, people were not angels in those days, but I think the high concentration of Carribbean people was not desirable to the council and police. It's a shame that no one captured the period with more photographs and footage. It was a very unique time that will never occur again
Do you think they were moved out purposely? Comments like this are what UA-cam is about. History.
@@TOITN Yes. I believe it's was done purposely. It was a sort of gentrification with flats being knocked down and venues like the pool hall and Vine Street being shut down. At the time, the Caribbean heritage population was high. The demographics in the city have completed changed now so those times will never return
Absolutely it was on purpose! They hated the fact the community would get together and congregate. I mean where else do you see police wagons parked up on the main shopping strip and randomly stopping people, piling in the back of a van and strip searching them. It was horrendous behaviour by the authorities……..but it was my home. Our home! Love this video and it’s so nice to see some people, that are no no longer with us. I see myself and my little girl and my two best mates in this video and I can even remember what I was pointing at at one part of the video. Beautiful people, beautiful music and beautiful atmosphere and community. God bless all who made it what it was. 🙏🏼Your kids were always safe as any single man and woman would get involved should they see someone acting wrong in any way. Safest place I ever lived.
@@shannaboobettyboo love that, Sharon!!! This is the same program that was run on a lot of communities. God bless you and your family, if only these days could return!!
Every time I hear Lisa Stansfield's All Around The World, takes me back to Crusader playing it out across Vine St.
