    Hey Andy
    I just want to thank you for all of your videos. I just picked up my first boat (A 20' Voyager Ghia) and its not a small project. Watching your videos has made the things needed to be done look very achievable and well within my ability (Transom repair with a new core like the boston whaler police boat series you did, And various other smaller things)
    So thank you for all of your time and effort making all of your videos

    I invested in Festool several years back and it is worth every penny and the dust collection is second to none!! The way the dust collector connects to the hose has been well thought out and have had no issues. Also I paired my CT26 with a Oneida dust deputy and had the same result as you achieved.

    I've been using a Festool Rotex 150 for years and I absolutely adore it - HOWEVER a friend of mine is painting cars for a living and got himself a Mirka Deros with the cloth sand paper and Mirka handblocks etc. with dust collection. Long story longer, I've tried it and OMG that stuff is amazing. He said he uses about fifth as much paper and stopped using a mask when sanding altogether and I completely believe him! That stuff is in a class of its own. Have a look at it before getting a Festool! - Just an advice, unfortunately I'm not getting paid.

    I use the Bosch 1250DEVS dual action sander with the Fein turbo 1 vacuum. The fein hose fits on the bosch tightly and as long as I dont kink up the hose it stays attached. Much cheaper than a festool too!

  • @dondonaldson1684
    @dondonaldson1684 5 років тому

    Andy, interesting that you made two points about the Fein. The hose and the platen. I have a Rotex 150 paired to a CT32 and it is much better for the two reasons you mention. The hose attaches to a fitting that clips to the body of the sander and it comes out under the body of the tool in line with the power cord. The platen of the sander is replaceable so that you can go from soft platen to a harder one to suit the sanding task. There is also an interface pad for super soft contours. The dust extractor has a volume control on it so you can turn down the vacuum. This is important so that the sanding surface doesn't get sucked down too hard to the surface. The hose is also anti-static plus you can get one where the electrical supply is integrated into the hose to stop tangles. The Festool SYSTEM is expensive but worth every penny. I think Oneida makes a unit which clips to the top of the CT so you don't have to worry about knocking it over.

    I had the same problem with the hose falling off of my Bosch 6" RO sander. Like the Festool, it has an outlet in line with the handle. However, the outlet is hard plastic. I use a 2' section of narrow diameter hose that fits it, and pinned the hose in place by drilling a hole in both and inserting a nail. A piece of tape holds it on and the short hose stays with the sander. At the other end, I put an adapter to the larger diameter hose that fits the Dust Deputy. The large diameter hose doesn't tend to pull out of the adapter by itself. Long runs of hose work better in large diameter anyways.
    The dust deputy is also available in a DIY version that is just the cyclone for about $50. I mounted it on a 5 gallon bucket, and secured it to the top of a hand-truck style Ridgid shop vac. The whole rig moves around together. The dust deputy works great for sanding anti-fouling paint and golden retriever shedding.

    Andy, besides just putting a hose clamp on the connection , which it seems you always use together, you could also, glue a strip of male Velcro to one side of hose and the female to the other hose and just attach them that way. Like a 3/4 to a 1" strip

    Agreed on you get what you pay for sander wise. I can't count the number of times I watch people in the boat yard try and sand the bottom of their boat with a 5 inch sander from harbor frieght. I get it you don't want to spend a lot for a sander your gonna throw a bunch of bottom paint through but the job will go a lot faster with a better sander. I went and splurged on a Bosch 6.5 inch unit that has a dual gearbox so it becomes not a random orbit but a powered orbit turns it half way to a grinder. I've had that for 3 years and 4 boat paint jobs and it's still going strong. Yeah it won't last forever and it was $300 instead of the I'm sure much nicer Fein price, but it gets a lot of work done.

  • @aallwwkk
    @aallwwkk 5 років тому

    I have the Rotex RO 125. I assume you're looking at the 150. Being able to switch between grinding and RO mode is nice. It has a shorter stroke than the Fein though and weighs in a bit less. The locking dust connector works and would be an upgrade over their previous connectors for you (which worked fine). The big downside is Festool uses their own dust collection hole pattern. So you're stuck buying from them and your existing abrasives won't work unless you want to punch new holes in it or use Abranet. Check out Mirka as well.

    I was an HVAC tech till I retired early. I’m almost 51 years old. I worked for a latex glove and condom factory and we used TONS of talcum powder which is one of the finest powders to try and filter. I used whole building talcum powder filtration systems and maybe you could find a used one to use in your shop. SOME OF Mine was self cleaning so I would only have to clean about once a month. They make smaller versions cause I used them. I was just letting you know all this so maybe you could look for a used one to use and make your life a little easier. 👍👍

    I've been looking for a sanding machine like that fein, i've found a RUPES BR112AES that has a 12mm oscillating sanding circle. In comparison that fein has a oscillating sanding circle of 8.4mm. I think that +-3,6mm makes a huge difference in the fiberglas removal speed.

    I lived in Germany for ten years in the military and the hose look like a quick disconnect on the orange fitting like a air hose. Very common in Germany and then you can add a hose clamp to the end of the rubber hose.

    If your respirator doesn't fit properly or shifts it won't be doing you any good. That's why respirators should be the last resort, or supplemental protection, for lung protection. You might find it interesting to go to your local firehouse and talk to the firefighters on how they get their respirator fit tested. Which is something they do periodically. You might find it interesting to talk to an industrial hygienist about proper respirator fit. He or she might be willing to come on the show and explain what to look for.
    An added benefit I have found finish sanding in home and furniture projects. Dust collection reduces clean up. Also the sandpaper doesn't load up, making it last longer, and gives better finish faster. I have now idea if that would be the same with boats.

    What if you took a bolt or metal rod and made a locking mechanism for the current sander similar to the other brand? The rod may block the hose slightly but it may help alleviate the hose slipping out.

    A small line/twine/rope? between the sander and the vac hose would save you a lot of tool throwing also. Same concept as boaters use so they don't loose tools overboard.

  • @2terribletoads631

    Festool is THE way to go. The boatyard rented those to owners to do their bottom jobs to help contain the toxic dust created when sanding hulls. Dust containment when sanding boat hulls is required by law and the Festool system works great. No hose problems either. Their vacuum and sander system would be hard to improve on. You'll have to spend some green but you'll get a top-of-the-line machine.

    Stop by a bicycle shop and ask for a bad 26" tube and cut some 2" sections. Slide one or two of these over the rubber coupling on your sander to tighten it up. it won't risk cutting your hands like a hose clamp and still lets you disconnect. I've had a Fein vac going strong for a decade now. Quietest machine available I believe. Love it but I too am miffed by the rubber hose. Also, the fact that the hose doesn't fit standard North American vacuum attachments is annoying. I've also considered the Festool transition but the cost is hard to swallow. Also, the vacuum footprint is pretty big compared to my small Fein. An issue in my crowded shop.

  • @jackrabbit5047
    @jackrabbit5047 5 років тому

    In an ideal world, the vacuum would be located outdoors. The problem with most systems, even with Hepa filters, is that the most dangerous particles are the sub-micron ones that are too small to be trapped, and then all your vacuum system does is make the particles air-borne as they get distributed through the exhaust port (those dust collectors sold to hook up to your power tools are the worst, as they don't filter anything but the largest sawdust particles with those big, open-pore bags. They're ok for helping to keep the shop generally clean, but I'll bet they're monsters for spreading the microscopic particles around). However, in our northern climes the machine probably wouldn't survive being outdoors all winter. A compromise is to set the machine up in a sealed ply box next to an exterior wall or garage door with a vent duct leading the exhaust flow outdoors (i.e. like a clothes dryer). But then you need one heck of a long hose, and there you might have too much of a pressure drop. Depends on your shop configuration. Also, I recommend an air scrubber fitted with a Hepa filter, like those that you can hang from the ceiling (can be purchased on Amazon for under three hundred bucks) that runs around the clock. Every once in a while I'll open both garage doors, don a respirator, and use a leaf blower to blow as much dust as possible outside, and then leave the scrubber running overnight before going back in. Works especially well on a blustery day when the wind swirls in and displaces a lot of shop air. Helps clear the air.

    With your skills, you should work for SPACEX . Today they successfully picked up the fairing. They are basically carbon GRP. As per Elon "Falcon fairing halves missed the net, but touched down softly in the water. Mr Steven is picking them up. Plan is to dry them out & launch again. Nothing wrong with a little swim." They probably need a light sanding and new barrier coat and some paint to fly again. I think they are worth $6m or something...

But I am not a professional and only use it occasionally. Fortunately it's not that expensive and the first 3 years the warranty covered it for me.
    I hope they will launch a brushless version in time for your current sander to give up.
