      Absolutely. I love that the questions were absolutely asinine, but Margaret in all her magnanimity and presence of mind managed to actually steer them in both more relevant and interesting directions, even despite being chastised for doing so. It's almost prevaricating on behalf of the questioner, and the answers being the clarification. That's the running theme of this entire interview.

    Margaret Thatcher was quick as a whip on her responses and answered them all brilliantly! She looked at that interviewer like she had three heads when asked if she would jump up in the air! I was mortified that this girl didn’t have the sense nor decency to refrain from asking a ridiculous, childish question to such a dignified and important lady. Mrs.Thatcher looked appalled and you could tell she lost all respect for that girl in that moment!

    An amazing intellect on display by a formidable and driven leader in this almost child-like interview. The majority of the questions posed to Thatcher here are irrelevant, illogical and frankly a waste of time in the presence of someone with such a deep and profound influence on history - it’s only redeeming factor being the cutting wit of the responses that attempt to bring this shamble of an interview to some sort of congruent message. Despite your personal views on her legacy and leadership, it is undeniable that this woman had a keen political mind and a clear vision in her beliefs and actions.

    It makes me rather emotional watching this.... thinking what the United Kingdom once was, to what it is now, a kingdom divided, bitter, mean; and each man seeking to force his will, his self interest, on another in what ever way he can, no longer through the rule of law. Because the rulers we now have do not respect the rule of law themselves, and are passing often useless laws. People might hate Mrs Thatcher, but you knew where you stood with her.... A house divided will, eventually fall.

Perhaps with the purpose to show that people with a lot power also can have a sense of humour and not always have to take themselves seriously. Then Maggie came on to the show...

    Very good interview. Some of the questions may seem a bit silly, but they are in fact not. They often refer to different kinds of criticism of Thatcher at the time. About how she admittedly proved that women can achieve a lot in today's society, but how typical a woman was she really, if she was an Iron Lady at home as well, how good her negotiation skills were and ability to make compromises if necessary etc. Thatcher was of course aware of this and therefore it is very interesting to listen to her answers.

    What in hell was the interviewer thinking? She had a great chance of interviewing a historical great political leader (Thatcher is considered the best prime minister ever after Churchill), and the interviewer asks such dumb questions, and asks her to do a jump at the end. The most amusing thing was that Thatcher was actually insulting her in a very polite (and british!) way and the interviewer did not notice. The only thing this interview was useful for was to show Thatcher's intellect and how puerile was the final request of the interviewer.

      @jpnarino 10 років тому +7

      Ai Zhongguo She is the second prime minister to whose funeral went the Queen, besides Churchill. The UK is a very different place, and she turned it from being 'The Sick Man of Europe' back into a healthy economy. Sure, there were people that hated her, but that does not take away that she was very influential.

    • @aizhongguo5812
      @aizhongguo5812 10 років тому +3

      jpnarino Yes she was influential but then so was Hitler. Every British PM is influential. That didn't stop her colleagues from getting rid of her.
      She had a state funeral because she died under a Conservative government. Yes, during times of cuts when money could not be found for anything, £10,000,000 was pulled out of a hat. God only knows what public services perished in order to fund it.
      The head of state will always attend state funerals, that's kind of obvious. The Queen would have little choice on the matter, its part of her duties.
      She was removed from power by her 'friends' because she was a liability. In other words, the British public did not want her in power. That's hardly the stuff of legends.

    • @jpnarino
      @jpnarino 10 років тому +5

      Ai Zhongguo She was highly influential, more than other PMs in 20th century except Churchill.
      She did not have a state funeral by her own wish. The Queen went because she wanted, as it was not a state funeral. A big part of the funeral costs were paid by her family, and the estimate of her funeral cost for the state was more on £3,000,000, not 10 millions.
      She was removed from power due to her strong opposition to Europe, and her confrontational style with her own party. Altough she pissed some people off, in general the public in the UK liked her and voted for her, don't forget she is the only prime minister also to win 3 elections. Just get your facts straight!

    I asked my father who fought in tanks throughout WW2 whether, when Germany had occupied the whole of mainland Europe, whether he thought at any time that we might lose the war. He sat back at age 80+ and thought a short while before pursing his lips and simply saying - No.
    He was no true blue conservative. Born in the valleys of South Wales where his mother would not let him go down the mines so he joined the army as a better option.
    'I didn't know that there was going to be a bloody war did I?'
    In those days everyone fought for Britain whether you voted Labour, Liberal or Conservative. That is what made a strong but diverse society.

    Lady Thatcher didn't think twice about calling Stina out on fallacies of logic & "gotcha" questions intermixed with flaccid ones. Her reaction when asked to jump is vintage Thatcher. I think the period after she was PM & before the dementia took hold was when she was the most clever & outspoken. It's hilarious to hear her backhanded comments about some of the more juvenile questions she's asked and Stina's uncomfortable laughter. Mrs. T did NOT joke. I haven't seen this interview in a long time & it still is fascinating to watch.
