Great work. Could you install the barrel “fingers” directly through the barrel wall?
You could. I would probably used small sections of threaded rod for the fingers and secure each one with a nut on the inside and outside of the barrel.

The forms are less heavy duty than those used for rammed earth but similar.

I am curious what the cob in the bermed sections of the walls is supposed to do. It obviously has no structural function. Is it just thermal mass?
Yes, thermal mass. There is layer of continuous insulation on the exterior side of the wall that isolates it from the outside. I go into more detail in this video:

Do termites not live in your area?
Borax?
Termite mitigation is a consideration in our area. I put borax in the clay slip the straw is coated with. Later I also applied a lime plaster over the light clay straw.
