- Butterworth's Cycle repair shop is one of Sheffield's little gems little gems. Opened in 1930 and still going strong handed down from father to son to grandson. It has a loyal following of cycle enthusiasts.
This mini-documentary is really just a window into what goes on, made by Lee Furness
I actually used to work there in 1969 to 1973 for Dave Butterworth (Matthew's Dad) to support my racing habit and the place looks almost exactly the same inside which is great. I'm writing my life's story and I'd just got to this bit and decided to Google Butterworth's . I'm delighted to see that it's still going but sad to learn of Dave's passing.
That as great to hear George
Hello George, it's Stuart Sidebottom here: saw your response to Butterworth's cycle shop: thought you might like a word, email: cicistuart@hotmail.com
Hi George yes the shop is a real gem and loved by literally1000s cyclist
I want to give a shout out to Aladdin's Bikes in Nottingham. Honest, hardworking people. Amazing place.
So good to capture the essence of such old bike shops, cos when they're gone and everything is being sold online, we're finished!
I too grew up in the seventies, in s. London, and the bike shop there that has passed into history was Wilson's of Peckham. RIP, all old bike shops....😚
Only just came across this Lee - lovely video - I found it because I was googling Matthew’s opening times - am heading down today - he is a lovely guy and great at repairing bikes … has kept mine on the road for years!
great nostalgic video , enjoyed it thank you , id love my business to be around in 90 years
Very good.
great video. love these types of bike shops
Thanks shem
Well done Lee great video x
Thanks Sophie
My uncle, who is 80 this year, has shopped at Butterworth's for many years. Wondering if he may have been served by the original Mr Butterworth!! I will show him this video and ask the question.
That's great, do let me know his memories.
I remember Clyde Tunnel Cycles in Govan as a youngster. This video reminds me of it,Bikes and parts etc everywhere BUT you went asking for some obscure part you can bet they knew where it was! Also I recall the smell of rubber from all the tyres. These wee shops must be supported because they are the lifeblood of cycling.I was reminded of this after a miserable trip to Halfords to get my sons bike fixed and they failed abysmally......What a super video though! Thanks for posting it.
Thanks for your comments Paul
I love this as I was a kid who grew up working in bike shops and experienced that simple life from the perspective of the repair bay. I treasured that time and really feel fortunate I had that experience. I am in California for it's interesting to see the same in a different part of the world. Thanks for sharing.
the problem with old bike shops is how messy and cluttered the place always is
truth
Cluttered yes but they knew where everything was !.
Great video good and simple
Many thanks Simo
Last minute of the film from 5m15 is blank.

Hi Israel, where are you based?
There WAS a bicycle shop on Peel St West Melbourne called City Edge Bicycles in 1999/2000 see a bunch of stoners from 1990's Melbourne bicycle courier whirled actually believed even without rudimentary thinking City Edge Laundromat on Errol St Nth Melbourne could leap into the future with "Kiwi" at the helm and "Chipper" as bicycle mechanic both of whom were always out the back getting stoned saying 2 each other "They won't know" while "Mick" really "Lendgra" a Satan who needed spare cash did all the selling, Mick said to me "You have a $350 bike, a $700 bike and a $1000 bike that's the shiniest AND you offer finance" aehy quizzed Mick "Which one sells?" Mick said "The shiniest".
I know bicycle mechanics work in this job
Yes they work hard Md
Gosh, I didn't know that Jeff Bezos even owns a bike shop
