I was a driver and then gunner in in Stalwarts between 1972 to 1974. Really enjoyed the vehicle. One problem was if the hydraulic system failed. You lost steering assistance and brakes. I had a very interesting drive back to base over three hours and had to engage first gear as an emergency brake when a vehicle overtook a parked vehicle in front of me. The silencer on the rear of the vehicle exploded when the engine backfired. According to the vehicle behind me I sent shrapnel all over the village. I was then stopped twice by the police because I was then throwing a severe smoke screen behind me. Funnily enough it was in the workshops for a while after that.
I was a tat surprised when there was a german audiotrack :) Thank you for the effort. There are enough german Tank fans who dont speak any german. Which is why my channel works :)
Quality! The Saladin certainly was one of the best armoured cars out there. They should've kept the production line open and carried on updating it. It's a pity Britain went out of the armoured car business.
So glad you got rid of the incessant music from a few years back. Amusingly, whilst the presentation of the inside evokes things like the Tank Museum's own videos, the presentation of the outside really had me thinking Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear. :)
There are not many but you can own and drive them in the USA. At least in Texas. Many states also allow Ferrets and other armour made by different nations. Unless you have the space and the workshop, I'd recommend the Ferret. Smaller and 'slightly' easier to work on. Great fun to drive.
Sort of. The difference is, when selecting forward or reverse, the driver has a simple lever which merely changes driving direction. If you want to go forward in a Saracen you pull the lever to the rear, push it forward in a Saladin. The pre selector was the same in both vehicles. I preferred the Saracen as the handle was there when you dropped your hand while you were driving, no fumbling about in an emergency. You have the full range in forward or reverse. I was trained on Saladin/Saracen in 1974 in Cyprus.
Fun thing about the B series engines, they were designed to run on poor quality fuel, to the point where they can (allegedly) run on Polish vodka. But not Russian, the russian stuff isn't good enough to burn. They can also be hand cranked. Yes, I've done it on my ferret, Yes, it's hard work and I wouldn't want to do it if someone was shooting at me.
Its a shame he didn't mention the HESH rounds that the short 76 was famous for, and the really clever 4 wheel steering, which gave it a tight turning circle, making it surprisingly agile.
@SuperErikRoss yep, it had amazing HESH rounds. It was chosen as its primary anti tank round due to its armour penetration not being affected by the relitively low velocity of the short barrel 76, it was an awesome armoured car in general, I loved driving it, although when buttoned down, the vision wasn't great, still perfectly acceptable for its time period though. . Selecting a gear in advance is also a bit odd, I kept trying to find a clutch that it didn't have. . . Wargaming really done this tank a diservice with the atrocious in-game version, almost all british armoured cars were designed to be able to turn around fast, it was the French armoured that had a wider turning circle, but they often had a 2nd driver facing backwards, no idea how WG got everything so backwards.
I was never a great fan of the Saladin but that's only because the British government never spent any money on it's modernisation 💷 🤔 it had more potential than was finally realised in practice.....
I'm nearly 70 and have had a love affair with this vehicle since I was a small child. What a great vehicle.
Aussies put the Saladin turret on the M113 chassis as a Fire Support Vehicle, used it in Vietnam. Tamiya made a kit of it.

Loved driving the old Saladin when I served weather in the Malaysian jungle or the desert sands of the Middle East, great fun.

Well narrated and produced video. Sweet, simple and short without skimping on necessary details.
I did some modelbuilding when I was a kid. The Saladin was the very first kit I ever did.
Not my first but for sure one of my favorites !!! 🙂
Glad the Saladin could bring some of that childhood nostalgia ☺ -Ser_Remseldorf
@@WorldOfTanksOfficialChannel Thank you for putting it in the game, now I get to drive that memory 😉
Great to see Mr Cutland again!
Excellent presentation. Good job!
WOT! You freaking ROCK for putting all this stuff together. Mad respect, and much appreciation!
Neat piece of Equpment. Looks like it was well thought out and very practical. Hard to find such things in the military sometimes.
Nice to see WG referring to the Saladin as an armoured car and not a “wheeled tank”. So they do know the difference! 😊
Very good video. Very informative. I have always liked the look/design of the Salidan.
Another top-of-the-class presentation! More please!!!!!!! Maybe a Staghound?
It was really worth to watch
Fantastic coverage sir, thank you.

Props to the UK for respecting Saladin.
That was really grateful. Thank you. Looking forward for more contents like this. Keep it up❤
Muy buen video, soy de Honduras y aquí aun están en servicio por lo que es especial para mi!!

I was thinking the same thing, imagine an updated version. However there wouldn't be as much profit in it as with Ajax etc.

Thanks! Great video
6:05 The driver is just happy to be there... with all those shells next to his head
There'd be a market for it currently in the states as an urban commuter vehicle.

Love it ! Just grinding thru this one right now, in the game its a good anti-light.
surprising armament for an armoured car.
I'll buy it
I just built a model of the Salidin. Before Google as now there is not a lot of information about it.
Very cool Armored Car.
The Saladin should have been kept and upgraded.
Well nice to see a old picture of 3 troop F sqn not sure where dogger peppy and I was when this was taken. Also a canister round holds 799 pellets lol
Digs, that raises the number of people that i know the full name of the BCF...the other being Bruce Austin!
wow great job... I have it equiped for Sniping and just scout with works good.
yeah my nation still use this armoured car XD
They are good vehicles :) Does your nation use Ferrets too?
I did hear that the Saracen, because of the front mounted engine, the driver had to operate the gearbox in 'reverse order' to the Saladin.

It is an armored vehicle like other tanks but of a different nature, NOT a car
