For the first time in over 50 years, the U.S. Jeep Wrangler getss a diesel engine. With impressive fuel economy and 442 lb-ft of torque available at 1,400 RPM, the 3-liter EcoDiesel and Wrangler are like chocolate and peanut butter. They go great together. Tom Voelk takes it on and off-road in Utah near Zion National Park.

Tom I can't believe how much you shot and cut together as a sole operator. Particularly loved the raw footage from the event presentation for those of us who weren't there.
One would think it was a 2 man job. Maybe with the new skydio drone he could get insane shots without worrying too much.
I learned shooting and editing in TV news so there's that...
@@DrivenCarReviews amazing job indeed mate
One of the best reviewers, especially with the narration.
I own a '96 ZJ Jeep that is a project vehicle. It is incredible offroad. I plan to install a Cummins R2.8 crate engine with the ZF 8HP transmission.
I long distance commute in a '16 Ecodiesel Ram 1500 Quadcab 4wd that has over 143,000 miles. It is lifted and has larger A/T tires.
The Wrangler or the Gladiator with the 3.0L Ecodiesel will extend the joy of driving a Jeep! Overland travel will be even MORE fun!
Nice greyish-green color on that Unlimited. And completely stunning natural beauty of that area! The scale and vastness of it all seems unbelievable! The colors at sunrise must be awesome!
I want one but really gonna wait till a year or two waiting for issues and recalls.
This engine has been out and running in the Dodge Ram truck platform since 2014. They pretty much have the issues taken care of at this point. This is like the third generation now. I run one in a 2015 Ram 1500 4X4. It does very well and super quiet. Mileage is absolutely amazing!!!
more like wait 4-5 years
This will make our service departments happy for years to come. Thanks FCA.
When they put it in the Gladiator I'm all in....FCA just take my money. Great job sir!
My steering wheel is on the Right and our JL has a 4cyl 2.2D 450Nm/333ft-lb (the JK had a 2.8litre of similar output) and we can only wish for the stonking V6 if not for the steering box, even if it is 45kg/100lb heavier. Consider that the interweb takes your message beyond US shores where diesels in passages cars are prevalent and in Jeeps since the mid-1980s. In my area this 3.0 has been nicely propelling GCs since 2011 (also Chrysler 300, Voyager, Ram). VM Motori makes both, recently bought by FCA, and has been in many brands over decades.
What’s wrong with a Diesel sound? It’s one of the best sounds in the world.
snowflakes dont like anything like diesel :)
In my eyes, nothing wrong with Diesel sound at all!! It's about time, just wish, they offered the Diesel in the 2 door also!
Eeeeww diesel sound
Sounds like victory to me
at idle of course
Tom has the best reviews no question!
UT-12 is one of the greatest roads in the States. Utah seems full of awesome routes.
Why no manual transmission with the diesel?? Make it available!! Other countries have that option!
153624 other countries have had the diesel option for years too in a wrangler
Baby steps. Glad they finally did something. I’ll take one.
I owned a 2006 Liberty 2.8 diesel very impressed, a little stinky at crawl speed and the windows open , great mileage on and off road , turbo lag but hey it has torque. Looking to buy a used Grand cherokee withe 3.0 , give that one a try next. Keep building great vehicles wish I had one of each model .
Great video!! Thank you for the much needed info (MPG shot) and the beautiful backdrops. You're delivery is very refreshing and I look forward to more. New sub!
FYI, one of the writers I talked to saw 33 MPG on the highway and said he could have done better if he'd have tried.
Anything above 30 mpg is a huge win
@@makatron that's why I really hope toyota could bring their diesel engines to land cruiser ,Tacoma ,4runner and sequoia in the US
@@carholic-sz3qv here we have almost every pick up and large SUV with a diesel option. With some like the Hilux, Frontier, Colorado and Fortuner exclusively with a diesel engine.
33 MPG would be very impressive
This generation Wrangler has had 2.2 liter 4 cilinder diesel in Europe since it was introduced in the summer of 2018 (Same engine in used by Alfa Romeo in the Giulia and Stelvio)
I'm guessing the reviewer has never owned a diesel - nor does he know the great day-to-day joy of having a diesel.
Diesel in a suv/4x4 is different to a diesel in a car, in a car its about economy and in a truck its about power......this ecodiesel will be a strong seller
Well it still is about efficiency too where the Diesel gives you that too. Power and efficiency both? Sign me up!
I think you get when I’m in a larger vehicle setup. For example the ram with Cummins gets better fuel than a 1500 gasser v8
What I am getting at is that in a small car you americans prefer a petrol over a diesel because of horsepower but in a truck a diesel is preferable because of torque.....what was said in the video was that he didn't expect the diesel to sell well because of vw...but that's small cars not trucks
@Arnold Morris it's what chrysler Europe did as well.....its the vm motori 4 cylinder right?
@Arnold Morris go for a new Defender in the new year
The sting gray and the orange are so slick looking.
Very cool, and very anticipated. I give it 5 months from release and the diesel gear heads will have a delete kit for it, and will be pushing unfathomable power specs and extended fuel mileage.
All they need is the stock tune and they're off.
What was that fluid squirting out at 7:31 ?
Who's gonna buy an ecodiesel jeep?
Me me me me me!
I'll be buying one. I've been waiting for this for the last 4 or 5 years. (Am presently the owner of a 2012 JK Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon I ordered new from the factory. Great vehicle, and I'll keep it when my wife and I buy a 2021 JL Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon diesel. My wife had a 2014 Grand Cherokee Overland diesel that we sold before moving from Utah to the Island of Molokai this past March. The Rubicon diesel will replace the Grand Cherokee.) Andy McKane, Molokai, Hawaii.
@@andymckane7271 in england we had a diesel jk jeep.....it was a 2.8 vm motori 4 cylinder with 302 lbft
Hopefully the fix the loose steering currently plaguing a lot of the JL's .... mine included. :(

The diesel sound matches the Jeep Wranglers look! Finally a good engine for it.
My 2010 JK is a 2.9 turbo diesel. I believe the engine came from a Fiat truck. It doesn't quite meet these performance figures, but it has done everything I have needed. It has topped 120,000km without incident, and appears to be bulletproof. You quys have been missing out.
Excellent review of the new Jeep Wrangler Unlimited diesel. This is a fabulous review. Keep up the great work!
Well... Korea has been getting diesel version since previous gen instead of gas, but jeep now added 2.0 gas for Korean market. Glad to see diesel for us market as well lol
Please be sure if you buy eco disel that you delete egr .The last thing you need to be off road and your regen show you 80% and you will need to go on the freeway to clean exhaust filter

If I could afford it I would totally get the diesel Wrangler. I think I've been awakened to the positives of diesel engines and I kind of wish there were more options for diesel engines in domestic automakers. Perhaps Americans outside the heavy duty truck segment haven't been keen on diesels in the past, but I think if more people looked at diesels they might find they would actually prefer it. Now it's just too bad the vehicles you can get them in are so expensive and that oil companies artificially inflate the price of diesel as a "premium" fuel, even though it actually requires less refining than gasoline. That said when people figure out you can run almost any kind of oil in a diesel (with a little modification and a proper tune) maybe we'll see biodiesels take off, driving conventional diesel down.
As a wish list item, Jeep should partner with Dynatrac on the diesel Rubicon and make ProRock 44s an option. Imagine buying a Wrangler from the dealer with ProRock axles already installed. Wow!
That 2 second delay when you're caught daydreaming on the job at 7:42
Utah is a stunning part of the country.
Very great idea putting the diesel in the Jeep. But the price is simply crazy!!!!
I'm not much of a Jeep fan but I am a Driven Car Rewviews fan. This video was an easy thumbs up!
why not? this video clearly shows the advantages of the Wrangler. You can be a fan or owner of a rival or competitor, even then, you should at least have respect for Jeep.
Great review. VentzP two weeks ago: I also have a Wrangler Jk with a 2.8 TD. A Wrangler diesel has been available outside North America for many years. The diesel would be my choice, especially as it is MUCH cheaper than petrol here in Ireland. They are very rare here. But I love Jeeps.
I absolutely love it.
I have a RAM with Hemi.engine, no complaints bullet proof but jeep diesel my favourite right now.
Great job, as usual, Tom.
After a full delete and tune it will be a monster.
If the MPG is good, and no lose of capability, this will sell better than the hybrid or the plugin for Jeep, unless using it as a soccer mom’s mall van.
Hey, that's Rick Pewe at 13:19 in the front row far side!
They “kinda” gave Jeep owners what they’re asking for. Still no manual/diesel combo, not available in 2dr, and still no OD green. They’re talking about a late release “sarge” green, which looked like baby diarrhea last time it was released. I purchased my jk in tank green and it was legit. Please do that instead on the jl. I’m wanting to trade in for the dreidel but I’m waiting to see what the color looks like.

Get the most comprehensive, longest, extended warranty they offer regardless of how much it costs.
I imagine 50 grand for these Jeep wranglers. All the manufacturers are building some awesome vehicles these days but it has gotten to the point that the manufacturers don't even think about what the final consumer cost of the vehicle will be when they design them and decide to go ahead and put them into production. They don't care. When and where will all this new vehicle price insanity slow way down or get to the point where no one will buy or even lease a new vehicle? I for one have bought my last new vehicle because of that "it is what it is" price attitude of all manufacturers these days. I bought a stripped to the gills 2017 Ram P/U 4x4 for 29 grand plus 3 grand for a lifetime bumper to bumper warranty so i will never have to pay more than $100 for any repair...minus the normal wear stuff of course...for as long as I own it. I figure this truck will have to last me 25 years or so by then I will be to old to drive. Won't be putting any more than 10K mi. a year on it, if that, so as long as the body doesn't rot off I might make it. You can keep your 50 grand Jeep. I paid 40 grand for my 2000 Sq. ft house brand new....
7:30 What was that spraying thing at the bottom of the jeep?
sand spilling/being blown by the wind out of the lower control arm axle mount...
It's definitely some kind of liquid. If you go frame by frame it's easy it tell it's coming from a hose/tube.
Ivelin Evtimov It’s probably water from the air conditioner
good catch
About time... It'll sell like crazy
$50k is a lot for a Jeep Wrangler. I can only imagine what a fully loaded 4 door Rubicon.
Please tell the engineers to keep crate motors in mind. Would love this EcoDiesel motor in my AMC Grand Wagoneer!
$4000 more than standard engine, plus diesel costs more at the pump, plus have to change that fluid every 10,000 miles. seems to take away from the fact that it gets better fuel economy
healthyamerican you don’t have to change the def fluid, you just have to add to it as it is used up. A tank of def will last aprox 10,000 miles.
Another great review...
But the idea of spending $50K or more on a first-gen Italian-designed diesel makes me nervous.
I wouldn't exactly call this design first gen. It's an evolution of an existing engine. Not to mention that FCA has plenty of experience with Diesels. Both Fiat and Jeep/Chrysler who have used VM Diesels in Europe for quite some time. Also, Italian-designed is not a bad thing in this case - the Italian Diesel industry is well established and their products are in use all over the world.
Is this particular Diesel good? I don't know but I wouldn't dismiss it more than any other new engine. Wait a few years and see...
And yes, 50k is a lot indeed but Wranglers aren't exactly known to be cheap. And they sell. So that won't change in the foreseeable future.
All true. And even if it's junk, Wranglers hold their resale value very well.
Technically it's the third gen
Run away, run away!!
VM Motori makes great diesel engines
This motor will be amazing in a few years
Is the diesel available with selec-trac ?
Can you get the diesel with the manual?
No

Very informative and useful review. Great job and thanks for sharing.
Jeep has had a diesel engine it or it is available in the Philippines since I have been here in 2012 but it is very expensive because of import taxes. I found a new one that was acspecial package for $100,000 n it was a 3 door n had a slide back soft top. A typical new one loaded w/diesel will cost $80,000 give or take 10k. I found one used and a 3 door with around 20k miles and 2016 selling for over $60,000 and has some extras added to it and they will get that price eventually. God Bless n love my 2009 4x4 Strada.
i will seriously consider oneof these if they come to NZ
With the crap show that was the ram ecodiesel and jeeps horrible warranty coverage (already fought and got denied a claim because they saw some mud underneath)... I'll stick with my 3.6 and hope nothing else kicks the bucket or I might be checking out the Bronco when it gets here. A 2019 Rubicon should trade in nice...
They won't have a problem selling them. The Cummins in the HDs sell for 10K over the 6.4 and they sell them like candy.
That is very true, but this is not a Cummins Diesel. It's the one from Fiat...
Not sure how this is the first diesel wrangler I have a 2007 Jeep Wrangler sahara 2.8L diesel turbo 4 door??
Better highway mpg than the gas versions? I'm skeptical but also hopeful.
Jeep has always had a Manual Transmission for the Die-Hard Fans!
Why would they put this Diesel-Jeep on the market without a Manual Transmission?
J P
Agree, can you get the eco-diesel in a 2 door Sport?
James wingert,
In the USA the Diesel jeep only comes in a 4 door jeep automatic Transmission.
Maybe the future will bring more...
J P....
They are probably having trouble designing a 5-6 speed manual that will handle the shock load of 400+ ft/lbs of torque ... and fit between the engine and transfer case
@@johntaylor7969 hahahahahaha Bro. Manual transmissions have been the king of torque for literally forever. The reason you can't get a manual diesel is because it's not worth them designing the interfacing if the transmission won't sell beyond a certain amount, and it plain wont sell. At this point manuals only exist in the USA for people who want the cheapest possible product or high-end sports cars, neither of which is a diesel Jeep. I absolutely hate how lazy my fellow Americans are when it comes to driving, and am legitimately depressed when I think about the death of the manual transmission in the next 10 years. I can't even find a 2014 or older manual JK for less than 85% of MSRP, never mind the 80k+ miles on those vehicles nor the fact they don't have power windows or door locks...
Manual can’t match the fuel economy.... even us die-hard manual guys don’t want to row 8 gears. It’s all about fleet fuel consumption averages now.
Thanks Tom for the review, nice people nice diesel suv and nice places, what else...
I love the fact that jeep put a diesel in the Wrangler and the Gladiator. People have only been asking for this for 20 years but I'm not going to disparage the fact they've done it now so thank you Fiat.
One question I do have, why does Jeep still have the mirrors on the doors when it is the only vehicle sold in America that has removable doors by design?
You said only rated to tow 3500, that seems awfully low. I believe that number is for a gas powered Wrangler, not a diesel. I have read online that the Gladiator with the diesel engine will have a tow rating of around 7k which make more sense. I have an 05 Jeep Liberty 2.8 VM diesel and it is rated to tow 7k and it is a smaller platform and weighs much less than the Jeep Wrangler.
Gladiator sport with the 3.6L V6 can tow 7600. The diesel JL is still rated at 3500lb. It’s more about the spring rates, suspension as well, which has not been changed for the diesel JL
This is an awsum option ! This ups the anti on the chevy / gmc Bison . Does this this unit offer locking difs ?

Rock crawling is all good and dandy, but how does it perform in deep snow and icy conditions?
"Reasonably priced"? Hahahah! For the price of an aforementioned optioned-out Rubicon, I can pick up a mint-condition FZJ80 Land Cruiser, swap in the new Cummins R2.8, upgrade the suspension, do a full interior refit/sound-system, AND STILL have money left over for a nice vacation. Decades later, the Land Cruiser will still be rolling while the Wrangler sits in a landfill.

They better come with Dana 60s for that 442ft lbs or have a full set of spare parts for the trail.
It's a shame you were not allowed to try it in the sand at Sand Hollow. Would have been interesting to see how the heavier diesel did in the soft sand. Not everyone drives on rocks. Here in the southeast, its mud and sand, not rocks.

Also finally a decent Diesle engine for the wrangler... about 10years to late where everyone's going electric.
I have a 19 Wrangler Unlimited Sahara 6cyl. Auto. I ordered it. I would love the Diesel BUT I'm not sure why Select Trac 4wd. is not available and that is a deal breaker for me. I love the set it and forget it 4wd. It's like driving an Audi Syncro. Works flawlessly. The 400 plus LB torque is amazing though. I've had Honda's, Toyotas, Ford, Chevy's, pickups and SUV's, but I LOVE my Wrangler JL more then anything I've ever had. Including the Kia Sorrento SXL V6 that I traded in for it and my Range Rover before that. Range Rover's, I don't care what anyone says, is the most unreliable brand and always seems to be unreliable year after year. my 8 Jeeps were ALL pretty reliable even though Consumer Reports continuously downs it. They are even better now, my 19 is perfect. Just hit 1 year and 13K miles and not so much as a single rattle.
I know a shop that does engine swaps for jeeps and puts tdi engines in them
About time Jeep, finally shove a diesel n there, the torque will make these amazing for fuel and fun
Here’s my question, if I go rock climbing for a weekend or even a week, is this engine good enough to protect from low mileage driving and protect from egr and carbon soot buildup? This is still an issue with diesels today when they come from Vw-Volkswagen
You're a good driver Tom 👍
Only thing its missing is a manual transmission with overdrive in 6th gear.. any manual would be a improvement
Australian & European JK's had 2.8L turbo diesels.. as well as appalling reliablilty & after sales 'service'. Chrysler/Jeep is one of the most critisized brands in Oz.
I wish Dodge would bring back the Raider, with straight axles and the Cummings 4 cyl. Get back into the off road market.
What is the wading depth of this eco diesel?
Oen Laksono same as the gas models. They moved the alternator on the eco diesel to accommodate the same water fording as the 3.6 and the 2.0
I rem in the Army I got to drive a diesel track vehicle (tank). The early gas models were a disaster for the hard work they had to do. Anyway, I don’t understand why Jeep bothered with a mere 2.0 turbo as it is not a big torque improvement over the V-6. Finally, I suppose the diesel will cost $5,000.
Stephen Powdexter it’s a 3 liter
I like the idea of a diesel Wrangler. I just wish they were not so unsafe. Wrangler earned 1 star crash test scores in Europe, Australia, New Zealand. Unacceptable in the modern era.
with all the diesel engines to pick from why this one.. crazy
VM Motori is owned by Fiat
Do eco-diesels require less frequent maintenance (things like an oil change) than a regular diesel??
Oil change intervals are about the same as a car. This particular diesel does not take the vast quantity of oil the larger ones do so the cost is not a big factor. The oil and fuel filters are fairly easy to change as well.
Takes 9 quarts of oil (special euro spec oil). About 7-8 bucks per quart plus filter.
This engine would be awesome with a manual transmission. It is merely great with the automatic.
Generally speaking automatics are better for off road. More control going over obstacles.
Rick & Zack Explore Offroad , I drove a manual transmission Jeep through a lot of trails, obstacles, and at least one Easter Jeep Safari so I respectfully disagree. It may be a lot easier to use an automatic transmission but I don’t think it is better.
4:04 Man, those must be some rugged trails up there! Wait, is that a Pacifica?
Diego Montoya it’s called a trailhead, but someone who’s never been off-road wouldn’t know that
@@g496r500t I would normally agree completely with you, but Tom literally hosts the Northwest Automotive Journalists annual off-road vehicle comparison event at the Dirt-Fish Rally school in Washington State. This was a press event however..
Why not in manual transmission??
Most people don't really learn how to drive a diesel engine. And end up burning the clutch. I seen it with drivers on rigs. That why all 2020 truck are going to be automatics and so called fuel economy.😭

Will this engine go to the Grand Cherokee as well?
Should have kept the Iveco diesel for the Jeep and put this engine for the commercial Ram.
If the diesels come standard with Dana 44 axles in the front and back
Why not just buy a sport or overland over the rubicon? Your gonna lift this beast regardless. Opinions?
Lockers and quick disconnects. The cost to install lockers exceed the cost difference. I've been deliberating this same question for a while and really I can't find a good reason to not get a Rubi.
