I am very satisfied with my WON SDS1022, user friendly, technically do the testing I need, and affordable.

I bought one for use with my curve tracer only.
Works perfect but heat a lot.
I make a hole in the back and install a 3 inch fan.
In the long run this heat can damage something.

Thanks for the update on the owom scope. I want you to teach me how to to use the scope to test transmission and reception of hand held radios and mobile radios and their watts for transceivers

Looks like they have a 4 channel version as well these days, which is the SDS1104 and it's available for around 300€ which is pretty crazy considering the other cheapest 4ch scopes are 400€ or so. This review is really helpful even if it isn't the same model, at least tells me that Owon isn't completely trying to BS people although I'm sure there's going to be some compromises to make it so cheap
Going to have to sleep on it a few days before I make a decision, there's so many different options these days and it doesn't help that as a beginner I honestly don't know what kind of performance I would need from a scope but I suspect it's going to be far less than whatever these cheap scopes are capable of

I purchased one of these OWON SDS1102 oscilloscopes a while ago to test CPUs and memory in retro computers. There's a lot of videos showing what you should or shouldn't be getting but there's not many, if any that explain how to setup the scope for testing memory and CPUs like Z80s and 6502s. Not having a background in electronics, I want to make sure I don't blow up the oscilloscope or the parts I'm testing. Is anyone able to give a quick rundown on how to setup the OWON SDS1102 for testing memory chips in those old 8 bit computers?

Hey, how are you? I'm not a pro but there are some basic things you should definitely know before even turning it on! Never put your probe or gnd on the hot side of the PCB, otherwise... "boom". Considering the scope shares the mains ground with the device you are testing. Make sure you are measuring DC signals on the cold side of the board. Just my 2 cents, hope you didn't blow it up yet xD

@@abijeetrs6522 Hot side is where AC enters the circuit, where the diode bridge, transformers and other related components are. Cold side is all DC and has a different GND, so you're safe using your probe on that side. If you are working with PSUs it's a good idea to build a current limiter using an incandescent light bulb. Look this up on the internet.

Nice little scope. I also have a low end hantek scope from China and I mostly use it not for seeing fast signals but often to monitor something over seconds or minutes. Nice little data logger for a super cap or a battery.

    • @PeterScargill
      @PeterScargill  7 років тому

Ah, good - I'm glad you wrote in Michael - because I was GOING to get a Hantek at some point. What is it like for responsiveness. One of the things I like about the OWON is, for example when you put your finger (or a signal) on the lead it responds immediately, just like an old-fashioned tube scope. Is the Hantek responsive like that? Which model do you have?

most drawback of this device is very SMALL memory, just 10k for sampling purposes. It`s not a problem for "seeing waveform" but very small for maths.

Hi Pete, and thanks so much for taking the time to make this video! I am thinking of buying this oscilliscope and was wondering when you have some time if you could give us any updates as to how it has been performing for you. I read somewhere that someone with a different Owen model oscilloscope was having problems with it freezing up 2 to 3 times per hour and several people said the software it comes with is very hard to install and most of them gave up trying to install it. Also have there been any firmware updates since you have had it, or have you noticed any bugs? Thanks so much!

      Hi there
A colleague of mine is using this on a daily basis and I think he's quite happy with it. We started moving house in January just as I was in hospital... we are still moving, so I've no access yet to some of my tech kit.

Thanks for the quick reply. So sorry to hear you were in the hospital. Is everything OK now? Moving is stressful enough so must have been extra stressful wiith a hospital visit. Hope things are better now, hope you are able to unpack your electronic gear soon and take care.

2 months in hospital to be precise... stroke in December. Just had my first proper drive today with an instructor, didn't do too badly. Spending half my days exercising, the rest at the computer working on restoring my keyboard skills.. and yes some of my kit is still in storage, we hope to complete the house move near end of May after a break in Spain.

So sorry to hear about your stroke. 2 months is a long time to have to be in a hospital. Are you feeling better? Any difficulty with speech or motion? Good that you are exercising and working on getting your typing skills back. Best of luck with all that and take care.
