Hi everyone - hope this is helpful for anyone looking at buying a new camera for landscape photography. Sometimes the older ones are better 👌Thanks!
Thanks for this 🎉
Pleasure 👏
Thanks for sharing this. I’m gonna throw the Fuji X-H1 into the mix paired with the 16mm f1.4. Great combo.
Yeah, very nice!! 👌
The only camera I have used that eases my angst at having to switch away from 4x5 film is the Canon 5ds. Combined with tilt shift lenses and primes and DXO Photolab it can make perfect photos... assuming you know how to make photos.
Great list - I recommend the older DSLRs as they’re still great cameras even though, as Chris said, they’re out of fashion. Great video! 😊
Absolutely - thanks!
I was wondering if your Bronica would make the list. Glad to see it did. I've been shooting landscapes with an rb67 and an olympus om-d e-m1ii for a few years, and I love them both. The olympus is so fun to shoot with.
Lovely - I was looking at some Pentax cameras recently and considering one at the moment. Love my Bronica!
I started with Nikon, D300, then D5600, now I'm saving up for a "higher" megapixel camera (because I realized that I crop on some of my photos), and relatively lighter kit - because of my back.
Thanks for sharing your top five cameras for landscape photography.
Here are mine:
90mm f/5.6 Fujinon lens on 4x5 inch large format monorail view camera
65mm f/5.6 Fujinon lens on Fuji GSW690 medium format rangefinder
50mm f/4.5 lens on Mamiya RB67 medium format SLR
28mm f/2.8 Nikkor lens on Nikon 35mm SLR
28mm f/2.8 Zeiss Biogon lens on Contax 35mm rangefinder
14mm f/2.5 Panasonic lens on Olympus micro 4/3 digital
16-55mm f/2.8 weather-resistant auto focus Fujinon lens on weather resistant Fuji X-Pro2 digital mirrorless
Impressive list of cameras there! Haven’t yet used a Mamiya - will certainly do that one day 👍
Kinda hard to list top 5 'must haves' when you are restricted to only the ones you have owned. I had the x-t1 as well, and it is hardly a must have landscape camera. Great yes. Must have? Not even close.
Wow, we must be very different as I consider the xt1 to be one of the most influential cameras ever. I kept the list to cameras I’ve owned to keep it authentic. Cheers!
@ChrisOrange Like I said, it's a great camera. But nothing about it qualifies it as a 'must-have' for landscape as compared to most other great cameras, other than maybe it's WR. But that alone doesn't qualify it as a must-have anymore than my water-resistant phone camera. If it was so great, you wouldn't have sold it twice already.
I don’t think we’re going to agree on this one 😃
Agree - but I’d include the Pentax 67. Best travel, portrait and landscape camera!
Nice selection, Chris. For me that ultimate landscape camera would be Pentax K-1. For ergonomics, robust build, image quality and on-board GPS. I don't have one yet, but maybe one day? Who knows? 😊
I keep hearing about the K1…maybe I need to take a look 👀
Thanks for sharing Chris! Really torn between the s5ii and the x-t5. Was hoping that the latter would also be on the list 😆When you used the x-t5, how did you find the pixel shift feature? Not sure if it compares to the high res image of the s5ii 🤔
Hey, I skipped the xt3/4/5 as after the early Fujifilm cameras the GFX system was more enjoyable to use for landscapes. The xt5 is for sure the best XT camera to date and I did love using it. I didn’t try the pixel shift, does it do it all ‘in camera’?
@@ChrisOrange I think you’re restricted in using software to combine the images in post :/ Cheers for your reply! ✌️
Chris - Nikon D810 (36mp) is iconic & still exceeds Cameras 10 years _younger_
Also, the lesser megapixel D750 (24mp) is phenomenal
Nice - have never even held a Nikon camera. I must rectify that soon!
D700 is a good place to start.
@ChrisOrange
I can loan you two if your again further north Chris.
@grahamniven
I disagree, since Chris is into Landscapes, resolution, dynamic range, weight, features etc, D750 expeed 4 sensor, tilting screen etc etc. You can buy a good D750 for - £500-650. My Nikon D810 & D750 both like 5000 shutter actuations each & immaculate were very affordable.
@Stop-All-War that’s very kind of you - if I ever decide to try, I’ll certainly remember that. Thanks!
Hello Chris! interesting content! Can I ask you what you mean by also putting the Leica SL (601) and SL 2 in this list of the best cameras for landscape?!? Thank you in advance for your answer. Best regards from Switzerland.
Hi there, I didn’t put any Leica cameras in the list. The list was: Fujifilm GfX, Panasonic LUMIX S5ii, canon 5DSR, Fujifilm xt1, Bronica medium format film. I didn’t put any Leica because I didn’t find them great for landscapes, compared to these others.
@@ChrisOrange OK I understand. I asked the question because in your previous videos you praised the qualities of Leicas for nature outings. In any case, I thank you very much for your kind response!
@jean-lucbarmaverain8519 they are fantastic cameras and I would certainly recommend Leica cameras for sure. They’re just not my favourite for the money and value compared to the others I listed. Thanks!
Thanks for the interesting list. In fact, my list has two cameras in common with your list, namely the Canon 5DSR and the FujiFilm GFX 100S (I still own both of them). I am not sure about the X-T1. I have it already and gave it to my little daughter to enjoy photography. My current list of the best landscape cameras would be:
1) FujiFilm GFX 100S
2) Canon EOS R5
3) Nikon Z9
4) Leica M11-P
5) FujiFilm X-T5
Nice - I think the X-T1 is there as I love the images I took with it back then. Still very capable I think.
Well the best for Landscape photography are the 33x44mm sensor cameras with 100 megapixels, next up are the 24x36mm sensor cameras with 61 megapixels, I do care about my back and my shoulders, so I have 24x36mm sensor cameras with 61 megapixels, though I dream of more... Film should not be used any more because of the chemicals needed !
Nikon D850 is the best DSLR ever made!!
Im predominantly digital user. Id say 70% to 30% film but personally the best landscape camera is large format film.
Seeing the image on such a large screen is magical and the ability to use movements liberating but of course, they require effort.
Yeah, large format for sure, but not very practical. I find medium format film a good balance for landscapes
I have used 4 cameras in 12 years of digital photography
Nikon D7500
Nikon D850
Fujifilm XT5
Fujifilm GFX50S ii
I love them all! Still own them except the Nikon D7500
For landscapes the GFX50S ii is perfect 👌...meduim format with "Only" 51 megapixels
Next camera is GFX100s ii (black Friday sales in November)
Once you've shot GFX you won't go back 😮..nope!
I think the GFX 50 cameras actually make more sense for most people. Files are more manageable and they look stunning.
How do you get your film processed / scanned?
I scan them myself on an Epson scanner, but I get them processed at a lab
@@ChrisOrange would you recommend a particular lab? Would you consider doing a video on the scanning? its got to a point that I've stopped using film because I;ve lost the skills to home process
@TheLooville hey, I did do a short video on how I scan - here you go: How I scan 35mm and 120mm film at home and get great colours - with film borders

I had a 7D when they first came out. At the time there were so many arguments between the 7D owners, versus the 5Dii owners, the latter always claiming a night and day difference in IQ when they upgraded. When asked to show the results they were claiming they never could. Excuse after excuse would follow. Then, the Sony A7r dropped, and that 37mp sensor blew me away, it was clearly superior to anything else on the market at that time, and any image would demonstrate it.
I remember those arguments very well - I had the 5D cameras and was always impressed with the 7D for its speedy fps. The 5D DSLR days were good days!
@@ChrisOrange It was on Photography On The Net. I remember saying early on that the Fuji sensor was 5D quality and got laughed at. Then, the XT-2 was released and all of a sudden people were listing their 5D3’s and going full Fuji. When they created a separate section for Fuji, the previous Canon FF fanboys were now like a pack of rabid dogs. If you didn’t wake up in the morning and sing the Fuji company song, you were hated. Anyone with a different opinion wouldn’t be tolerated, and I saw some vicious pile ons. In the end I just came off it. I went from being on there daily to never, and it was all down to the Fuji inner circle.
Fujifilm X-T1 is amazing I converted on 720nm infrared
I will never sell this camera body it is old school
And it’s going up in value too!
@ChrisOrange yes, maybe Chris, but sell one of the best camera from Fujifilm. It is not a point, you know, because you have used this camera long time for landscape.
