Super Metroid, one of my favorite SNES games. Although it was a hit game, it still had its glitches. Never knew Samus could hold over 300 energy tanks. Even in the first Metroid game, you can only have 6.
It's always the little details in these videos that I love, I had no idea about how to clear the ones at the top of the screen, nor the crash sending you back to ridley. Keep up the fantastic work.
I knew about the Spacetime beam. I've also stretched to the top of the menu with my e-tanks before. However I've always wondered the most efficient way to get a bunch! This blew my mind. Way more energy tanks than I ever farmed myself, this was incredible and informative!
Could you make a video on how the Glitch Beams (Murder, Space-time, etc.) uses in-game and in detail on why these glitches work from game's programming? I seen videos (including yours) of different in-game uses, but never an explanation how these glitch beams are able to be activated at all.
That's a great idea. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about how the glitched beams (including Chainsaw beam, which is really the only other glitched beam that "works") function at a technical level. :( I do know that it's VERY complicated, which is probably part of the reason why no one has made a video trying to explain it haha. To give you a sense of how complex it is, check out this page on the Super Metroid Speedrun Wiki and scroll down to "How It Works": wiki.supermetroid.run/Spacetime_Beam. That section was written by Total, and he knows this game inside-and-out on a technical level. He knows WAY more than I do, and even he admits "This is pretty much all I know so far, and some of it might be incorrect. I'll try to update it as I learn more." If Total doesn't fully understand it, there's a good chance no one does. :) However, if you just want to see a video that reviews the various uses of the glitched beams, I could do that. :)
@@GoldenChorizoCode Appreciate your time in responding to my comment! I can understand the difficulty regarding the glitched beams so I'll give that linked article a read in the meantime. But yea, I'm interested in seeing a video of showing off the Glitch Beams and their uses!
Great video. I wanna see how the title screen looks like with THREE save files all with 326 energy tanks. Also, what's the cap on reserve tanks? The Samus screen will probably get pretty messed up! Hell, would enough reserve tanks be able to counteract the negative HP of post 326 energy tanks?
I beat the game on Switch with over 200 etanks, 25 reserves, over 100 supers and PBs, and not a single missile. For no reason other than I could. Yeah Tourian was awful haha. I grinded out the etanks with a slower but similar method. Very detailed video explaining the limit.
Kind of odd that they used a signed value for energy. I guess they just decided it didn't need to be unsigned if no one was going to get that much energy in normal play. Actually, considering this game would have been programmed in assembly, signed and unsigned integers wouldn't have existed. Maybe they just reused existing code that already used two's complement?
I was messing around with this glitch and... Fun fact: If you do the STB Glitch in the Terminator Room, and exit to the top right, somehow it triggers the Escape Sequence without the timer, the theme song or the screen shaking. And if you do the same glitch on the door that you came from, you be back to the Terminator Room as nothing happened. Plus, if you take ANY route that leads to the ship or the tower after Tourian escape (I forgot that room's name, if it has one), the Escape Sequence will be triggered without the timer too. Actually many doors can trigger this weird escape sequence. I'm doing some tests to see which one triggers and which one crashes the game.
I'm really enjoying your videos. They're very well put together, concise and informative. Super Metroid is my favorite game of all time and it's really cool to see these things that I never even knew about before. You've earned a sub from me and I look forward to what you're going to put out next.
Having to wait for my energy to fully restore whenever I go to Samus’ ship or fight Mother Brain is why I pick up no extra energy tanks when I do the reset glitch. Having near unlimited super missiles and power bombs makes the game easy enough already. Out of curiosity, what’s the upper limit on how many reserve tanks Samus can collect?
I totally agree, haha. With regards to Reserve Tanks, I haven't actually tested it, but I think the practical limit should be 327 tanks. The range for "maximum reserve energy" (as well as current reserve energy) is also 0 to 32,767. Since you start the game with 0 possible reserve energy, it should take 328 R-Tanks for the game to consider your "maximum possible reserve energy" to be negative - at which point you 'd effectively have 0 Reserve Tanks. But, at least collecting a 328th R-Tank won't instantly kill Samus. 😂
Samus: Breaks Space and Time to gather a Huge amount of health and Ammunition. The Bosses be like I'll defeat you this time. Samus: I got all the time available and plays on Morph Ball while trolling them.

There sure is! But when the Missile count is "negative", the Missiles actually function properly, for the most part. Check out my video about getting near-infinite ammo (if you haven't seen it yet). I don't explain this technicality in the video, but just like her Energy count, Samus' ammo counts also use "two's complement." So, in that video, when the Missile count becomes "65,535", the game actually thinks of that as -1. And every Missile you shoot thereafter makes the count even more negative (until you reach -32,768, after which the value suddenly becomes +32,767 and then decreases from there). There are a couple of ways to see that the game thinks of your "near-infinite" Missiles as negative, though. For example, Crystal Flashes won't work, even when it seems like your Missile/Super Missile counts are 65,000+. Also, when Mother Brain's rainbow beam hits Samus when she has "near-infinite" ammo, her ammo counts will *instantly* become 0, rather than (quickly) draining like normal. :)
Hey Breno Moura, thanks for the comment! :) I do want to say, for both you and other viewers, that you really should *not* be using ZSNES... I don't know all of the technicalities, but check out this page on the Super Metroid Speedrun Wiki (which is written by people who REALLY know their stuff) and scroll to the bottom: wiki.supermetroid.run/Emulators. Not only is ZSNES unsafe, but it's also not a very accurate emulator, which is likely the reason why Spacetime Beam doesn't function as it does on console or on higher quality emulators. There are multiple safer and more accurate emulators such as Snes9x, bsnes, or even virtual consoles like Switch and Wii, and I would *highly* recommend using one of those instead. Cheers! :)
