  • Blake and I recently headed up to the incredibly beautiful Riding Mountain National Park in search of the numerous Whitefish that are found in Clear Lake. A fun morning of ice fishing with the Aquaview HD10i Pro underwater camera as well as the Garmin Panoptix Livescope landed us with a bunch of fish that were released to live a full healthy life and hopefully be caught again one day.
    I truly appreciate you taking the time to watch the video and leaving a comment!

    Great you got with Blake Morken out on Clear Lake chasing whites. The lake is so much fun to fish, In early January the water will be clearer. The north side takes longer settle out from the fall turn over, then seeing the bottom in 20 f.o.w. would make a nice video. Also cluster holes from a hut and you don't need a flasher. You were set up in the exact location were my husband caught a 24 15/16 whitefish. Excellent choice by Blake to made a video.

      Yeah I’m hoping to go there again a little later on this winter, I’ll try out your suggestion. Maybe I’ll finally get a big one.

      And yeah I actually kept two off camera and smoked em up the other day, just didn’t want people to think it’s ok to take a ton of fish out of a relatively small lake like this one.

    You gotta watch whitefish and cisco if they flop around too much once you land them. They can and will headbang themselves to death surprisingly quick. Awesome vid, fellow!

    • @darrensnorthernlife1184
      @darrensnorthernlife1184  3 роки тому

      Yeah I don’t have much experience with them but I noticed that they do headbang a lot, I think I’ll make a little livewell for them next time so they go straight into there as soon as they are landed.
      Thanks bud🙏

    Great tip about using Google Maps to find reefs! I've done that before as well, then I usually check them on the lake map as well to see what the bottom content has - sand, clay, muck, rocks, stones, or wood. They all have their times where they're good. But you can't go wrong with being on the edge of a reef to catch whitefish!

    • @darrensnorthernlife1184
      @darrensnorthernlife1184  3 роки тому

      Yeah google maps is a great tool, unfortunately a lot of our lakes here don't have mapping so can't really fall back on that.

    • @fishlovme
      @fishlovme 3 роки тому

      @@darrensnorthernlife1184 That's why Google Maps is great. You can see the reef on the aerial image and you can even get GPS coordinates of it (if you're using Google Earth, not Google Maps), and can get pretty close to that point by navigating to it. From there, having a good mapping system on your locator is great. Humminbird has an option where you can create your own contour map just by driving all over the lake. I know some people who do that on some of our up north lakes that aren't mapped. But our DNR has most lakes mapped. Problem is, some of them (actually most) are from the 1950's and 60's, so a lot has changed on some of those lakes, but you can easily pinpoint reefs and flats on them.

  • @fishlovme
    @fishlovme 3 роки тому

    Gotta love those whitefish! They sit there and circle the bait sometimes for several minutes before they commit! Other times, when there's several around, they'll come right in and grab it! Cameras are neat to watch them, but I've read that in the clear water like you have and we have out on Green Bay it can spook them, or they at least become more lethargic.

    • @darrensnorthernlife1184

    Nice catches Darren! I’ve never been ice fishing before but it looks like it has a lot of overhead. How much do those fish camera doohickeys and ice drills cost? I’m guessing newbies probably use their friend’s gear or just cut a hole with a saw. You guys are pretty professional.

    • @darrensnorthernlife1184
      @darrensnorthernlife1184  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you! Yeah the gear i'm running costs a bit, but you really don't need much to get started.
