We should all care. Better quality audio at no extra cost benefits us all (even if you don't listen to loseless audio yourself). Apple should've embraced loseless audio earlier like Tidal and Amazon did

Thank you for explaining the fact that Bluetooth has its deficiencies which is why I honestly cannot hear any difference when comparing lossless with compressed music for the most part. I guess it’s time to go back to wiring up my equipment. Again!

I couldn’t agree more. As a music producer I’m used to work with high resolution audio. I’m glad Apple included lossless audio in Apple Music for no extra charge! This is a real game changer when it comes to music streaming services. Bluetooth is lovely but cannot provide lossless audio. Transmitting such large files within the range Bluetooth operates is not possible (yet). It’s hard to tell if this will be available in the future. Nevertheless I prefer listening with a wired headphone. That’s where the real magic happens even on lossy codec. I listen on my iPad and iPhone with a good wired headphone from Sennheiser, AKG etcetera. My Mac is hooked up to my audio interface which outputs the balanced channels to my Adam Audio studio monitors. It’s really incredible what Apple pulled of here. The level of detail is astonishing with a setup like this. I definitely want to see you do a video about hearing the difference between lossy and lossless audio formats. There are people, *kuch Rick Beato, kuch, who ‘prove’ that even a well trained musician can’t hear any difference… That statement is false. A well trained ear, especially anyone in the music industry, can tell the difference between a shitty MP3 and a 24-bit/96kHz wave file. Even 48 and 44.1. (Sorry for my cursing in the former sentence). I have nothing against Rick Beato, I respect him for his great knowledge and experience in the music industry, but making such a bold statement within a video with only one person to validate his opinion is far from professional imho. I can go on and on about this but I won’t. Great video!

You forgot to mention the main paradigm shift presented by losses music: Its never been available before! Ever! High-end hifi gear, vinyl etc all coloured and essentially altered the music musicians committed to tape (or disk) in the studio. For the first time in history, on suitably-wired headphones, you will hear EXACTLY what the artist created. Thats huge 👍

just using the 3.5 jack on my M1 Mac mini through a Yamaha receiver and Polk speakers. I was pretty happy with the quality off ACC. I have to say I am surprised how much better lossless sounds. I was not expecting such a noticeable difference. I'm waiting for a Fosi ($80) DAC so I can try 24/192

Lossless Audio may be beneficial to a small part of the population. I don't think most people will actually be able to appreciate it. There have been a couple studies (double blind and randomized) where 90% of those tested could not tell whether music samples were from streaming UA-cam (256Kbps) vs the same samples from a CD (1411 Kbps @ 16 bit). ~90% of people (including some audiophiles) were flipping a coin as to which one had the better sound. Guessed right about 50% of the time. They could describe in detail why sample A was better (more airy, more open, spatial placement of instruments, etc). But then 10 minutes later would say the same exact thing about sample B. There are a few golden ears out there. ~10% tested could pick out the CD sample 85% of the time. I would postulate that anyone over age 40 would have a difficult time due to normal age related hearing loss. But being an audiophile is a hobby with many fun biases. Lossless audio is part of this fun hobby. If you know you are listening to lossless audio you WILL DEFINITELY hear a sound improvement (after central processing.) As human beings our minds work that way. Nothing wrong with it.

I'm over 40 (technically still 40 for the a few weeks) and can tell the difference but generally only on certain music genres and with tracks I'm very familiar with. You have to know what to listen for when comparing most of the time. It's more noticeable on music with instruments rather than Pop music, Hip Hop and Dance music that use less instrumentation

@@franklingoodwin With vision, most approaching 40 y.o. could start benefiting from some optical correction, especially for reading. There is a wide range of visual acuity among the population. A countless variety of prescriptions for glasses is possible. From no correction needed to severe visual impairment. Hearing is no different. There is a wide range of hearing acuity in the population, that sadly begins to worsen as we get older. Unfortunately we cannot correct auditory deficiencies as well as we can visual ones. Hearing aids are designed to help people understand language. They can boost a narrow range of frequency to help words be more clear. Say 500Hz to 4,000Hz. With typical hearing loss 2,000 Hz and above are the frequencies that are effected. Music has a range 20Hz to 20,000 Hz. (Only children can hear anything around the 20K mark.) When you start trying to boost frequencies above 5 or 6KHz with hearing aids feed back occurs (squealing.) You can cheat a little by taking sound above 6000Hz and moving it down to below 4,000Hz before amplifying it, but of course that distorts the sound of the music. My stereo system includes two 30-band graphic equalizers and a pink noise generator with calibrated microphone so I can balance the room to my seating position. The room may be balanced but since I have normal age related hearing loss (I am 67) I still have to adjust the mids and highs with my preamplifier which has an 8-band parametric equalizer. This allows me to shift frequency so the music sounds better to my ears. All very unscientific, and just a rough accommodation to a more complex problem. There is still a lot of detail I am missing in the upper range. The air around cymbals is gone for example. Maybe some day an audiologist will be able to write a subscription for "ear glasses" that will bring us back to auditory 20/20. Do a little experiment. When you are sitting and listening to your favorite music, cup both ears with your hands like you are trying to hear better (creating bigger ears in essence.) See what happens. If nothing, then you have great hearing. But if all of a sudden you can appreciate more upper range detail and "air" then you will get my point.

The web site named Bandcamp is a place you can buy digital downloads (and sometimes CD's, DVD's, and other merchandise). Music buyers can select FLAC for download format, and for most albums that is supposed to be CD-quality lossless. *SOME* artists also release albums on Bandcamp which are higher that CD-quality, such as: 24 bit 96khz hi-resolution Studio Master version

Or is the music better even if I do not get the "full benefit" of lossless as it sounds improved to me. Would appreciate your opinion / answer. Thanks!

About freaking time. This is a topic I've been passionate about for some time ... almost like when I hit pause on the youtube video to write this comment and then an add miraculously starts playing (yep just happened)- it's disrespectful. For DECADES we've been ROBBED of what the artist intended. I'll never forget the 1st time I purchased music off iTunes. 256kbps. What?? I paid full price for a fraction of the file?? Disrespect. And then the removal of headphone jacks was insult to injury (a bit melodramatic) but I know you understand. I still buy CDs and then rip them in lossless to my laptop, then whatever I love I compress to 320kbps and throw on the iPhone, which still hurts my soul. My car no longer has a CD player, which also hurts. Yes, until this year I still had a CD binder in the car. I haven't been able to make the transition to streaming indefinitely because I feel like once I purchase the CD, I have the full quality forever, without having to pay $15/month every months for the next 50 years. Yea I do the regular Spotify for casual listening or exploring new music, but when there's an album that is special I have to buy the CD. Maybe someday I'll turn, but I'm not there yet. Yes I can hear the difference. Music sounds more full across the board, lows, mids, highs. More fullness and tone; more air and space; more dynamics.

The reason everyone is talking about Apple music going lossless is because they beat Spotify to the punch at a competitive price point. Spotify announced their HiFi service, which will be launched at the end of 2021. Apple just one-upped them by launching now AND keeping the same price point for now. I believe, as hardware improves, 2, 3, maybe 5 years down the line they will change their price point. Me personally, I'll wait until Spotify launches HiFi to see what's what. I'm just very disappointed that smartphone manufacturers don't give a shit about this since most don't even have a headphone jack and the ones that do have crappy DACs and amps built in to them. LG was the only one that used a Quad-DAC setup, with a robust headphone jack amp, that gave you superior sound but they didn't include that on their last flagship the Velvet and are now out of the phone business for good. Who knows, maybe all this attention will be a wake up call for the others. I do not want to buy a $300-500 dedicated player for hi-res music. That's like when I had to carry a flip phone and iPod at the same time. So annoying!

I was planning to go for Sony XM4. I didn't. Instead I got HD569 and HD560s. Also got FiiO k3 and xDuuo Link2 (to pick one and send back the other). 560s is my first open back. So I don't know if it's the lossless audio or the fact that I've never used open back before, but I love the experience!
However, I'm still trying to understand the impact of these DAC/amps on the audio quality, details, etc. The increased volume is obvious. Though not sure if needed as my macbook seem to be driving them quite alright for the volume. I feel like noticing more clarity and better insturment seperation at times, but can't be sure. I'll try harder :)

I had to EQ my 560s to boost the low end and get rid of the "Shoutiness" at certain higher freqs, then they were good. But just for giggles I bought some Focal Clears and the 560s just sit now. Im not sure the diff was worth $800 though. I have a dragonfly red on my PC with Amazon HD, and I'm not sure it sounds any better than the headphone jack on the puter with the Realtek HD music sound card.! But I do think the CDs on my computer sound better than the "Lossless" online files. Just a smidge fuller. Have fun!

In comparison with the ones I tried so far, I thought having the flexibility to not be tied to the desk would be nice. I think it also offers EQ settings so I may play with that a bit as well. We’ll see. I also tried AKG K361 in the meantime as I wasn’t so sure with HD569’s comfort. But 569 sounds a bit better to me and more importantly, provided a better isolation which is important for me for the closed back pair. K361 is also nice though. Very easy to listen. The real earth-shaking part of Apple's announcement is that they're providing the lossless versions for *Free* (or at least, "no extra cost over what they already charge"). There have been many other sources over the last 10 years, but always selling lossless-audio music at a premium price. And if a music retailer as huge as Apple is going to supply lossless audio for no extra cost, then everyone else who sells music has to at least *say* what they're doing with lossless.
This is all somewhat frustrating for me. I definitely want lossless versions of my music, and I've been ripping my CD's into ALAC format for at least 10 years now. However, I also want to listen using wireless headphones, and there's simply no way that bluetooth headphones can deliver the full quality of lossless audio.

I use a program called "dBpoweramp Music Converter", which does an excellent job (IMO). Not only does it rip the CD's, but it calculates some checksums of the data it read in off the CD, and compares the checksums of the music data from your CD to checksums collected from other people who have ripped the same CD.
And it automatically connects to multiple crowd-sourced databases which know the song-titles for each CD. You can compare the titles found at each service and decide which title you prefer for each song. This saves a lot of typing!
I run it on macOS, but it's also available for Windows. => dbpowerapp .com

I use a Mac Mini to stream my Apple Music to my components.
I have a desktop audio setup that has spread out the space of my desk.
Unfortunately, I have no room for my computer set-up. I do have room nearby to setup my computer that relegates me to go cable-less and use Bluetooth.
My MX-01 and BluDento has been able to upgrade my components’ inputs from aptX only to aptX-HD and aptX-LL.

When I was listening to a track on Amazon Music Unlimited, it did a breakdown of the quality of the track quality of the track from the recording quality, the source device and what the listening device was capable of and most of the time it displayed the quality as 16bit/44KHz to the headphones -
would this be correct? Also I read someone’s comment on another YT channel that Bluetooth 5.2 is capable of 24bit/48KHz. Is this correct? Also when listening to Lossless and Hi-Res Lossless on Apple Music through my Liberty 3 Pro earbuds, I can hear a difference. "Is it worth it?" Worth what? It doesn't cost anything if you're an Apple Music subscriber.
"Should you care?" Not if you mostly listen with bluetooth headphones, HomePods, AirPlay, CarPlay, or bluetooth speakers.
But if you have a good stereo and DAC, Apple Lossless lets you enjoy the massive Apple Music catalog in CD-quality sound--or better. It's definitely worth it.
There are already millions of folks who subscribe to TIDAL, Qobuz, or other lossless/hi-res streaming service and already know about this stuff.

Amazon lossless sounds better than Apple's lossless. Apple sounds ok at lower volume but gets harsh with volume level at same level as Amazon. Amazon sounds fuller without the harshness. I'm using a M1 Mac air with ipodpros. Wish Apple's sound was better cause I use all their hardware. I choose Amazon for now. Actually comparing "I guess that's why they call it the blues" Apple sounds better more clarity and space. But sometimes it just sounds too harsh

That’s because Tidal uses a lot of MQA stuff instead of FLAC which is comparable to ALAC. MQA has been catching a lot of ire lately because I guess it isn’t “true lossless.” I can’t personally say whether that’s true or not because I’ve tried Tidal only a couple times whereas I’ve had Apple Music for forever, but that’s where the argument is probably coming from.
