If we consider that Westerosian lions died out about a century later than the dragons (which were introduced there by the Targaryens roughly 200 years before the event of HotD), it seems to be a mere coincidence that lions died out in the same time period, after being a deteminating part of the local ecosystem as an apex predator for probably _several hundred thousand_ years.

At this point House Targaryen was basically unchallengeable, Maegor literally wreaked havoc across all of Westeros just straight up committing the most horrible things and it was only when his nephew Jaeharys started to act that the other houses began to rise up to challenge him

He aint dumb. He never prepared or imagined himself king. He inherited a great and peaceful kingdom and he was obssesed with keeping that way. Unfortunately sometimes you have to commit vile acts to maintain order, Viserys never had the stomach for those type of things.

Viserys was indecisive as a king and let his emotions make his decisions when it came to it, but ultimately his kindness to his family and love for his queen, and especially his brother were his greatest attributes
Though portrayed as weak - his rule was peaceful and it was Indeed his death and absence is what divides the kingdom not his life and rule .

I believe initially he named her heir out of fear but he began to truly see that Rhaenyra had the potential to be good ruler. That is why he stood firm in his decision. He could be swayed about a lot of things but never that once his mind was made up and didn’t stand for anyone questioning it.
