I love this tank, simple design, easy to care for and absolutely stunning. I honestly hate a lot of reef tanks because most people just try and collect as many different strains of corals as they can, which doesn't look natural and ends up being a cluttered mess when the frags start to grow in, compared to this tank that has 4-5 different types of corals grown into big, natural looking colonies. I also think soft corals are very, very under appreciated in the hobby, a soft coral dominant display can easily rival or look better than a SPS display.
His store and knowledge is well worth going out of your way to stop by. Getting to know Ali over the last couple of years is what kept me in the hobby. Awesome guy, Awesome store.
Really enjoying your videos Jake! This is Reefahholic. I just got back in the game again. I love this guys approach. Simple, easy, effective, beautiful, stable. He’s a master for sure. Well done videos bro!
I love this guy's set ups. Simple and awesome looking. I do the same with my tank. Can't believe I haven't been to his shop. Going to have to check it out.
I love the garden eel!! More vids on how to properly prepare for and care for other unique species like that? I want one, but I wanna be ready so I don't cause heartache for myself
Beautiful reef, the garden eels were a real nice surprise. I kept them for several years and had to give them away when I moved. I know he mentions they are hard to keep, and while I'd agree they are hard to keep in a reef if you build the tank around them they are relatively easy to keep. The grandis colony is really what's super impressive. I was surprised to hear he's only had them about 8 years. I've probably had mine about 8 years and even counting the many times I fragged them they've never grown half the amount of polyps in this tank. I guess I need to resurrect a MH.
Great video you posted I walked into that store just the other day looking for help for my 29gal biocube he gave me some basic info to try first. he said like he knows his stuff. I will come back for more info. GOOD JOB
Thanks for the update on this I saw this video of this tank years ago and I always held it in high regard stunning tank so great to here more about it .if u could I would love to see more in-depth videos of the tanks in this store
I find this FAR more appealing then an SPS tank. Nothing against SPS corals but this to me reminds me of natural reefs I haves snorkel in when I went to the GBR.
OMG I love those file fish. I thought you couldn't put them with any coral. They don't bother those corals there? I know he said they took out one type.
Hi Feroz, I dose B-ionic part 1 and part 2 manually in this aquarium. About 20-30ml once or twice a week. I'll add a few drops of Lugol's iodine once every few weeks as well. Honestly most of the time I end up forgetting. I'm more strict on my calcium/alk dosing regiment on aquariums that contain more stony coral.
I'm afraid I've covered everything Ali has to offer for the immediate future. But be sure to check the links in the description for videos of his pico reef and the entire store.
Is he only running a protein skimmer down there ? No carbon? No poly filter ? I would love to run a simple system like that on my 40 gallon long . Would love a video of what he doses and basics like that
There's an inner plastic tube connected to the outer shroud. If you cut that inside tube out the flow increases tremendously while simultaneously only pulling about 3 watts of energy.
Love everything except those clove polyps. I have a similar pink clove and it just destroys everything it grows so fast and I can't kill it off 100%. It's made out of the same stuff as Wolverine.
Hmmm a decade or more ago I remember "Japanese style" involved a bunch of various spot lights to highlight areas of the tank, wondering what is "Japanese" about this reef (please don't say because he's Japanese it makes it one)
Bacteria have no problem finding surface area to grow on - not just the live rock and sand but every nook and cranny of your sump, plumbing, even the impeller of your pumps is coated with bacteria. Having TONS of surface area is more crucial in tanks heavily populated with fish, but doesn't *really* apply to reef tanks.
Two reasons that I don't like having too much rock: 1) I don't enjoy the look of having too much live rock inside of an aquarium. I like to have open sand and an 'island feel'. 2) Too much rock can inhibit water flow and cause lots of detritus and gunk to build up in hard to reach areas.
I met this guy once maybe 8-9 years ago. The entire time I was at his shop he kept telling the customers about this conspiracy he’d been reading about regarding Wuhan China. It’s been a while so I can’t remember the details.
After many years of watching reef thank videos, this one is still my favorite.

Styles: it’s either packing a tank with coral or selecting a few and growing out.
All are fun, but different options.
Very nice tank.
Simply the best.
I'm amazed he keeps those Radions and those other pieces of equipment near the door like that ahah
That's amazing simple and Nice tank! Congrats.
I love soft corals/leather coral
Absolutely stunning. Beautiful file fish
God I love this tank. So simple and so beatifull.
Thanks for the update on this I saw this video of this tank years ago and I always held it in high regard stunning tank so great to here more about it .if u could I would love to see more in-depth videos of the tanks in this store
Beautiful!
Every simple and beautiful tank nice 👌
I like simplicity👍🏻👍🏻. I like the fish selection and the brittle star. Isn’t this the system that originally house chalk basslets?
This is one of my all the time favorit reef tank.. i love shallow cubes. and this reef scape is soo damn minimal
I find this FAR more appealing then an SPS tank. Nothing against SPS corals but this to me reminds me of natural reefs I haves snorkel in when I went to the GBR.
Nice tank, omg. What kind of bulb is this? Phoenix 14k?
Nice update Jake!!!!
OMG I love those file fish. I thought you couldn't put them with any coral. They don't bother those corals there? I know he said they took out one type.
~4min and 2 seconds in there is a sea star? in the background. Any idea of the specific type?
Aly’s shop is the best
man so happy😁to see the old school way of doing things im still old school. i use t5 and i dont have an apex😁😁
Nice fixture!!
Great info !
Beautiful.
Jake you should ask him what and how often he dose ?
He talks about his general dosing approach in the video tour of his store: ua-cam.com/video/6h-LkLHmxYo/v-deo.html
Reef Builders thank you so much 😊

ali atapour Thank you so much Ali.
I will fellow as you said.
Have a good one.
What do you do ? Your sinularia looks much nicer than mine;-( you have low flow?
What type of light is he using?
I like simple too.thank you.
Hello Mr. Adams, do you know what he feeds his filefish
Super nice tank.
Can you cover more on this guy
I'm afraid I've covered everything Ali has to offer for the immediate future. But be sure to check the links in the description for videos of his pico reef and the entire store.

boring
+Reef Builders why do you not want to have too much rock in the tank. I heard you two mention this both of the last two videos. Thanks!
where you located now- are u till in Tustin? I cant remember.
Bro can u tell me what cm hace your tank pls???
Where can I buy a gell filter for my camera?
What size tank?
What filter do you need on a dslr camera to take picture with blue light?
I don't use any filter, just white balance
Am I right saying that a japanese style aquascape = few rocks and the corals are the aquascape?
Does anyone know the tank manufacturer?
What is the name on the other "eel" at 4:41? The one in the down left corner?
Very nice tank! What is this Tunze 6015 mod he talks about? Thanks
There's an inner plastic tube connected to the outer shroud. If you cut that inside tube out the flow increases tremendously while simultaneously only pulling about 3 watts of energy.
I will try that on my pump. Thank you . Love your shop!
Love everything except those clove polyps. I have a similar pink clove and it just destroys everything it grows so fast and I can't kill it off 100%. It's made out of the same stuff as Wolverine.
How long has he had the filefish

Japanese Style! More like KISS Style Love it
OldTinRacing Bab
There was a dragonet in there too.
Question- were in Southern California is this fish shop at? Do you have a name and location please I would really like to go see in person
Amazing Aquariums & Reefs in Tustin
That green leather coral is like a bonsai . EDIT: all of dem dislikes be dem SPS dominant geeks heheh
Nice tank, I think I have about 50 lbs of live rock for sale...
Did I hear that right ? No heater
Wow....
?
Love the nuclear green Nethea...have a couple big myself
A little MH or HPS aint that bad ?? Led all good ???
Hmmm a decade or more ago I remember "Japanese style" involved a bunch of various spot lights to highlight areas of the tank, wondering what is "Japanese" about this reef (please don't say because he's Japanese it makes it one)
You're right it was more 'Japanese' in its aquascape and aesthetic back then and the name just stuck since this tank has been around for so long.
Mike B fewer larger colonies instead of a clusterfuck hoard of frags like a lot of people have.
I'n both videos he said "only use a little live rock". Why is that?
I thought that more surface area the better?
Bacteria have no problem finding surface area to grow on - not just the live rock and sand but every nook and cranny of your sump, plumbing, even the impeller of your pumps is coated with bacteria. Having TONS of surface area is more crucial in tanks heavily populated with fish, but doesn't *really* apply to reef tanks.
But why is it important to not have too much LR - as he said?
Two reasons that I don't like having too much rock: 1) I don't enjoy the look of having too much live rock inside of an aquarium. I like to have open sand and an 'island feel'. 2) Too much rock can inhibit water flow and cause lots of detritus and gunk to build up in hard to reach areas.
What is a Japanese style reefscape? :O
I met this guy once maybe 8-9 years ago. The entire time I was at his shop he kept telling the customers about this conspiracy he’d been reading about regarding Wuhan China. It’s been a while so I can’t remember the details.
yeah I remember this,.,oh painful little guitar
For anyone watching this now, in 2024, this tanks equipment is the SAME
It's a great looking tank , but not a single word about ALF........ ....
Top👍
Ali's tank look better in person
What is Japanese about it?🤔. Little rock?
I think Ali is Japanese.
the fish don't speak english.
Gene Yuyiboy Jimenez shallow and more surface area, I think.
Hi. FYI, the above Ali's Pico Reef link is a dead end. No content.
Thanks for the heads up, the link has been fixed.
Japanese??? better in 08
