Thailand not only has a great manufacturing manpower and resources but also has a massive Harley culture.
In fact, probably it comes second right after USA when it comes to cruisers, custom bikes and everything is Harley.

What are you talking about? Harley sales are very poor in Thailand, they don't even get in the top 10 bike brands sold in the country which is ruled by Japanese and Euro bikes. Even when looking at the custom culture it's dominated fully by Yamaha's and Triumphs.

I'm in Thailand. It cost crazy money to get a used Harley here. The import tax is crazy. Not everyone can have a Harley. The big baggers have to be imported. Any of those smaller cruisers are what they ride here. This I think is to get into the bike market in Thailand. I'm sure the government is cutting them a deal. Also, the bike market in Southeast Asia is huge. Crazy money to be made. It's 75-85% scooters and motorcycles here. Kids are riding scooters here at 6 years old.. People tour on scooters over here. Remember the labor is so cheap here. Look at the currency rate.

IMO Harley should design something like the new Triumph 400 for the Asian market. I'd buy that or a new design Royal Enfield Classic 350 over a Harley here.

Thailand is often referred to as the "Detroit of Asia" due to its strong presence in the automotive and motorcycle manufacturing industries. Major Chinese EV brands and Japanese car manufacturers have established significant operations in the country. Thailand's plants are highly efficient in vehicle assembly and meet the Board of Investment (BOI) requirements. To take advantage of tax benefits, many parts are produced locally.
For motorcycles, all major Japanese brands have production plants in Thailand, along with Triumph and Ducati, which manufacture bikes for export to Asian and European markets. Companies choose Thailand for its favorable tax incentives, low labor costs, and an efficient supply chain with locally sourced parts.

Here in Thailand HD is saying it is permanent. The 100% tariff on anything built in America is their decision. Thailand has removed the tariff from all Chinese vehicles alone. Honda, Subaru, Suzuki cars have all left (or are leaving) Thailand because the have decided that China is the partner. • @Motoramblings

The company is moving production of certain products, that sell better there, to another country. This is to lower manufacturing costs, and eliminate the need to pay the high costs of exporting products to that country. The production of the products that sell better here, than elsewhere, will remain here. Harley Davidson is doing what so many companies have already been doing for decades, looking at the $$, and trying to keep as much in their pockets as possible. Short term gain? Long term failure? Only time will tell, but one of the biggest selling points of HD has always been the fact it is an American company, it will be interesting to see how it develops from here….unfortunately, the human cost to employees will be much more immediate…

It’s true also to include knockoff bikes from China is as good as the bikes from Japan to say better quality than the original.
For an example of certain Harley riders are switching to Indian as they know on the future Harley-Davidson will no longer be made in the USA after they see the cost and yet foreign motorcycle manufacturers are taking notice to built motorcycles in the USA, that probably BMW end up making motorcycles in South Carolina, Yamaha, Suzuki, or Kawasaki making motorcycles in Alabama and Honda making motorcycles in Texas just taking note of Harley-Davidson plans to move all their production to Thailand, this also give notice for South Koreans making motorcycles in Iowa on where is going on rebranding Hyosung into Indian.

Young people who want to ride a motorcycle shop around and find that they can buy a metric bike much cheaper than a Harley.
The metric has more horsepower and will outrun any Harley on the road. The big problem is the price. Metrics cost far less in the U.S. than a Harley. Harley says they build a "Premium" motorcycle. That does not mean it is better, it just means it costs more. I have seen this change coming for the last 20 years, as Harley has not had a good relationship with their Union workers. This is the first step in moving all production out of this country. They want to break the Union. Like the "first baby," this is coming, I just don't know when. Oh, and if you think a Harley made in Thailand is going to cost you less money when they ship it back on the boat to be sold in the U.S. then you are smoking something you hold in your left hand.

So, the new school liquid cooled rev max motors and all bikes they go into go overseas while the old school old tech air-cooled bikes stay stateside. Brilliant. With emission compliance issues in the EU for the air-cooled bikes and an aging population of us on big American ass touring bikes, what is their 10-year plan then?
This is what I would like to see.
    1) Develop a touring bike that is 2/3 sized for the Asian market that can be also available in the USA market. Alot of people don't want to rustle around a 900lb. bike but want a fairing and bags of one.
    2) A 400-600cc class bike.
    3) A fully liquid cooled motor. No more of the B.S. 60k or more = high mileage on trade in and the value is cut in 1/2.
    4) Better headlight and seat. They are the first things replaced after purchase.
    5) Stand by their extended warranty even if a rally is going on. My bike blew the Auto compression valve out of the rear head when I was less than 8 miles from exit 55 HD the day before rally in 2022, but they wouldn't honor the warranty " sorry, only doing oil changes and tire replacement during the rally".

To protect jobs a company has to stay in business. Management or bad incompetent management may use the make it off shore threat as a bargaining tool or to entice investors predicting lower costs. When they lose focus on the customer and the product like in the AMF years it is short term gain for long term pain. On any day the US government could impose import taxes on motorcycles made off shore. To win with this strategy long term is impossible.

Harley-Davidson lost its luster for me a few years ago with their insane pricing on outdated bikes. I'm keeping my 2020 Iron 883 because it's the last of the air cooled Evo Sportsters. I had high hopes for the RevMax engine models, but the styling of the new Sportsters is hideous, and the Pan America has been fraught with problems. I was holding out for a Pan America 975, but I got tired of waiting and bought a Triumph Tiger 900 GT Pro, which was made in Thailand (I think the engines are made in the UK). The bike runs flawlessly and the fit and finish is excellent. So HD said young riders aren't buying Harley's but they keep making the same boomer bikes that they made forever and expect Gen X, Y, Z to buy into grandpa's and grandma's touring bikes. Sales keep declining, boomers are riding off into the sunset, and Harley continues not to target younger riders. Given declining sales (dealers showrooms are over supplied with bikes) and high cost of US productions, it makes perfect sense to make the small displacement bikes overseas. However, the Revolution Max motor was designed for the next generation HD rider, high performance and water cooled, for a 975 Bronx line and 975 ADV bikes. But HD has no idea on how to target the next generation riders. As to the IAM union statement, its so full of BS and misinformation it could be a FOX news feature.
