you not being allowed to film down the mine makes me want to visit that museum even more. The fella who was letting you in seems like a fella I would have a beer with. Good stuff

You guys are always so calming to watch ❤
Oooh a boat on the Caledonian canal! Now you've got me thinking...! A narrow boat trip is definitely on our bucket list.
My Grandad was a miner near Barnsley. He made my mum promise that I'd never go down a mine. I've honoured his request. So glad that the NCM Museum exists to keep stories alive.
I am sure he would bless a visit to the museum. It’s an eye opener to see how they used to work down there 👍
Great vid guys, the mining museum is well worth a visit.
Point of order for next time - Penistone is pronounced PennyStun 😉
Love your videos! My husband and I used to work in a modern underground mine here in Australia … it was at least 800 metres deep when we worked there but it is at least 1 km now. I was a cleaner and generally worked at the 420 metre level cleaning crib (lunch) rooms, offices, control rooms and toilets. My husband would work down the bottom where it was hot as hell doing hard yakka that was ad hoc most days really … cleaning rocks off rail lines, cleaning rocks off conveyer belts and many other jobs. The mine was copper, uranium, gold and silver. It is in Outback South Australia near the town of Roxby Downs. The name of the mine is Olympic Dam Mine. The underground roads are about 5 m wide x 5 m tall for dump trucks and other plant machinery plus mine vehicles to run around in. The mine has a cage (lift) to take workers to different levels of the mine. Hope that was of interest.
Yes it was of interest. My brother used to be a mine engineer in a copper mine in Zambia. Sadly I never managed to visit him there but he used to tell some hair raising stories of what it was like. 👍
Watching as per on a quiet Sunday morning with a cuppa tea 🍵 and dunking biscuits 😋, well i can see ex constable Ken being Captain Ken on a narrow boat, what say ya Carole 🤔🤔 would be good viewing on the channel 👌mines looked very interesting 😊 could you imagine what working down these places must have been really like 😨😰fair play to everyone who had to endure these type of conditions ❤🎉
I always feel so sorry for those poor pit ponies, who once lowered into the mine never came back up again, never to feel the wind and sun on their faces, never to graze or canter about, must have been torture for them. Poor things.
Life was very hard for every living thing down in those mines. We were told about the little kids who would sit in total darkness all day operating the hatch to an air vent.
great vlog seeing the pit ponies reminded of someone i used to work with he was a bevan boy during the war and he had to look after the ponies obviously being alongside them for such long periods had an effect on him and often with out realising he was doing it he would shake his head from side to side and make the noise a pony would make as it moved its bit inside its mouth ,the museum seems a fitting tribute to a way of life that we depended on so much
Carol..if I didn’t get the carrots and onions out ,you’d would forgot them too..lol ,thanks, another great video Carol n Ken.
Lovely architecture in Leeds city center. 👌
We have a bone to pick with you two, we bought a Haggis lasagne from Henderson in Castle Douglas, it was too tasty and we can feel our arteries clogging up already 🙀. Truma heating seems to cause a few Utubers issues Adz Adventure’s had to do a bit of re wiring to get his to work in Norway
The haggis lasagne was pretty good and filling. Glad we got our heater replaced. Consort were quick to sort it out 👍
Lovely video - really interesting and rather moving to see and hear about the mining museum. Thank you.
I'm loving the music in this video! Sounds very Mike Oldfield/Jean Michelle Jarre. Wonderful! Safe travels. 🙋👍🙏
Great video as always guys. Tough times working those mines. Thanks for sharing . Glad heater an all is fixed.
I think your choice of music for your videos is excellent. You always seem to get the right mood. Adrian & Jayne
Thanks for sharing such a relaxing and interesting video, the Coal Mining Museum showed us what a hard life those men led....
Thank you so much excellent video, have you been to big pit in south Wales , it’s similar and worth a visit .I got caught too with my mobile and I sought of knew as I’m a sparky and worked on flame proof equipment . It was all free as most museums are in Wales , well they were when we went . You’re not that far from Aberfan when at big pit , but it’s pretty narrow around that area but worth a pilgrimage. My dad worked in the mine , and there were two which crossed one above the other out in the estuary ,so they closed my dad’s mine and knocked them into one ,and took the coal out the other . Can’t imagine working in a mine underneath another under an estuary 😟🤷♂️ your right there was great camaraderie like you 2 really. well done both good luck 👍👍👍🏴🏴🇬🇧🇨🇦🦢
Thanks for the lovely comment. We have marked Big Pit on our todo list for next time we are down that way. Sounds good 🙂👍
After a hectic day I was so pleased to see your video. They never get old and always what I need to escape for a little while. Thanks for another great one. Glad you got your heater fixed and the alley you travelled looks like some of our city streets.
Very interesting Ken and Carol, we’re you in the job at the time of the miners strike? I was and remember being at the big K kellingley when there was a big to do between us, Thatchers boot boys and the striking miners, that day started very peacefully but a huge number of miners eventually turned up and a lot of pushing and shoving started. A sergeant in front of me got shoved back and broke both legs and it turned into quite a memorable day. Sadly kellingley closed not too long afterwards. Bitterness still exists nearly 40 years later between strikers families, police and those that chose to work. Great videos, keep them up, very enjoyable.
I did one tour in Kent which was pretty uneventful to be honest. Soon after that I transferred into CID at Brighton. It was a terrible time for many and there was wrong doing on both sides of the fence. I wish we still had the steel, ships and coal though. Relying on other parts of the world is crazy.
The coal mine looked great! So inexpensive too. And another piece of time and way of life thats gone forever! Great video peeps. Cheers me dears! Safe travels. X🙋👍🙏
Up around the hills above me in this episode. Some desolate spots. Nice views during the day from the higher ground. And you are right about the muddy spots at Pugney's Water Park - was very wet a few months back.
Thanks for taking us to the Mining Museum. We didn't know there actually was one. Shame you couldn't film underground but totally understandable and free too. A rare thing indeed these days. 👍😊🐕🚙
What a fantastic visit to the miners museum. I don’t think I would’ve been able to go underground though 😊 The horses 🐎 were so beautiful 😍 Glad you got the DH sorted ✅ Thank you for sharing. Em, G & Charlie 💜
Lovely video, great to see you around my neck of the woods 😊
Great vlog. And thank you for showing us Leeds (never been there). This shopping centre looked beautiful. It looks Italian. Have a great week 🙏
Enjoyed the video. Lovely ponies. Was it claustrophobic down in the mine tour . The view at the back window of your camper looked so nice. Thankyou.
It looks like several successful days on the road. The museum looked so interesting, disappointing you can’t film , yet I completely understand why! Good old Snoopy is proving to be a good choice for you. Take care, Mary
The section covering your visit to the National Coal Mining Museum brought back mostly happy memories of my time working underground in one of the nearby coal mines as an Electrician. You are spot on with your comments about the banter that went on in the showers and clean/dirty lockers area too! Most not repeatable on a ‘family’ channel tho. 😊
The city architecture was really stunning. Really enjoyed the visit to the mine too. Looking forward to the next one😀👍
Great thank you as always. Loving the new van too. Home from home perfect!

Lovely video as always very calming 😊😊
Did hire a narrowboat with some friends ten years ago. One of my best holidays! We hired it at Stoke and was out for a week on the canals.
Three OMG moments there. Number 1 Penistone is where our van was built and that spot is exactly where Claud stays the night when she needs any after sales service the next morning. Number 2 we have the exact same conversation about once a week - Claud, “do you fancy living in a narrow boat?” Me, “no.” End of conversation. Number 3 watching you chilling in the van and we suddenly thought, blimey, we’ve been in that van. Made us feel famous lol.
Once again a great vlog - interesting seeing the coal mine museum and the ponies. Enjoyed the variety you film. Thank you for sharing from Australia.
Those diesel heaters are a bit troublesome. People living in their vans, here in Canada, dread problems with them. Because if they stop working in winter, they are in trouble. They have to keep a spare and learn how to service them.
I can understand why. At the same time we were having issues we were watching another channel Adz Adventures having the same issues. He was in Norway in very cold weather and was lucky his didn’t finally lock him out 👍
Brilliant video. Fantastic architecture. ❤
Loved the car park attendant's accent. Sounded so friendly and happy. Your meals looked yummy and gourmet. We have a bumper-pull camper and my meals never look that tasty. I need to up my game. We are headed to Kentucky and Tennessee at the end of June. Going to husband's archery tournament in Metropolis. Illinois, the home of 🦸♂️ Superman.
Another great video! It was nice to visit Leeds with beautiful architecture.
Been a couple of times took hubby and dad who both worked in the mines. It was a fab place to see
Hello Carol & Ken, loved your video, it's funny I want to do what you are doing in your camper van and I live on the Canal,.on the grand union.
Your food looks lovely 😍😍😍.
Take care until next time. X X X
Thanks Susan. We will have to try a narrowboat on the canals one day 🙂
I'm new to your channel, but I'm all in, I love your content and how peaceful your life is (I know it does come with some stress) but thank you for sharing.
That was a very interesting museum. Quite a tour. That modern machinery sure looked enormous.
@@LifeistooshortCK Going ok. I had another biopsy Thursday and should have response soon. Hopefully everything is ok. Thanks for asking.
Glad the heater is sorted 🔥
Fantastic video, as usual, I can't believe John Lewis no longer sell cameras, what a shame. The mining museum looks wonderful, will go there one day. The architecture of the shopping arcade in Leeds looks amazing. So glad Snoopy's heating and hot water system has been replaced. Looking forward to your next series 🚐❤️
Apparently you can still buy cameras online from John Lewis just not in store. Mobile phones have had a drastic impact on that market. We can recommend the mining museum. Thanks for watching 🙂
Thanks guys lovely video 👍
Very interesting episode. Thank's!
Quick point of order if I may, John Lewis have stopped selling cameras instore, but you can order online for next day delivery to your chosen store or to many other shops and supermarkets. I work in a John Lewis and weeks would go by between camera sales, blame mobile phones :-)
I was told this by a member of staff in the store. The whole point of John Lewis is it was one of the few remaining places other than specialist stores (very rare now) where you used to be able to pick up and feel the cameras before purchase. I don’t blame the store as I am very aware that mobile phones have almost killed the camera market. Truth is though camera manufacturers have killed themselves by constantly producing kit that is pretty useless for the travel vlogger. 👍
Aw - I got lost in that market when I was little. Terrifying (like in that song, 'I've lost my mummy ...'). That was before my parents moved us back to t'other side o't' Pennines! I still have a soft spot for Leeds - and wasn't the poor rough sleeper's bridge amazing? Had no idea about the museum. Will add it to the list. Thanks, as always. Laura
❤❤❤
I would have loved to see that mine and I'll bet the banter in the lockers would have been unrepeatable!! I've lived in mining villages and gone to school with miners kids and you couldn't meet a nicer group of people.Family were very important and the devastation caused by the then incumbent was sickening.(Getting off my high horse now).
That lamb stew looked delicious even without the peas😁!I'm glad the heating got sorted.Nothing worse at our age that being cold! Enjoyed this one Carol and Ken see you on the next.Safe travels.
Thanks Barbara. We can only imagine the camaraderie of those mining families having watched films like “Brassed Off”👍
@@LifeistooshortCK I've also seen it in the Forces and I suspect in your previous job Ken.If a job's got any kind of danger or risk you need your co workers to have your back.
Nice vid trip, that was a surprise all those parts to fix van.
Another great video me and my partner will be copying this layout in our next van it looks perfect! We are also watching some of you 'little red camper' videos. Your Channel is so calming and joyful to watch. ❤
That was a very interesting video. I was brought up in a mining village but will save you from another of my trips down memory lane! We used to own a narrowboat and kept it on the Grand Union canal just past Napton Junction. I think you would enjoy a holiday on the canals but at 2 or 3 miles an hour progress is slow. Mind mooring up in an isolated spot is beautiful and I loved the boat. I love our van too. Thanks for sharing another great video.
Our trip on the Caledonian Canal scared us to death when we got caught in a storm on Loch Lochy. I wish I had filmed it but it was before GoPro’s existed 😁👍
Oh I love that museum and I bet you experienced real darkness whilst down there. I drive those roads regularly and not that you were aware but after you had been through middlestown and on to the road towards pugneys you drove passed another colliery site, that colliery was actually linked by tunnels to the museum once upon a time and other collieries too. The tunnels were extensive and of course one of the reasons for subsidence in the area. Until recently I worked with a gentleman that took a lot of the photos on display at the museum. We are just going through 40th anniversary’s of some of the darkest moments of the minors strike.
I wish I had known you were in the area I would’ve pointed you in the direction of some beautiful and interesting places to visit.
Thanks for all those interesting insights. There’s a lot of history in those mine shafts for sure 👍
Great 👍
I'm from near the mining museum, glad you visited my neck of the woods.
Oooh we call that welfare stew. I hated it growing up but now I love it lol ❤. Aaah Morecombe and Wise they were the days. 😊😊
Wow Leeds seems to have gone 'all posh' since I was a student there in the 80's - but I always loved those arcades and the market.
Talking of which, we had a student trip down Grimethorpe colliery (one of the deepest in the country) - the only thing was it was during the miners strike, and the protesters thought we were 'scabs' so our bus got attacked. It was an absolutely terrifying experience for us greenhorn students - but really brought home just how elevated tensions had become (rather than what you read in the press). Fortunately nobody got hurt, and after that going underground all the way to the coal face was far less scary. But kudos to the miners, as the confined space and conditions brought home just how tough a job it was for them.
I just remember how sad those times were, with so many communities devastated...😔
Anyway thanks for a trip down memory lane, and I am please to hear you got a new heater 👍
Not sure i would want to be heading for a parkup in the dark, you are braver than us!
Been doing it quite some time now and we actually enjoy the buzz. Had an interesting encounter recently that will be coming up the series after next 😁👍
Brilliant
So very sorry to you both for getting the comments to the vlogs mixed up. I sent yours to Linda. That’s what happens when one’s trying to talk on the phone at the same time of commenting on vlogs, anyway, thanks for another very informative vlog. Glad your heating is sorted for you now xx❤️❤️❤️

Such a shame all our industry from the north has gone. The communities were very different I am sure. Glad you got the diesel heater changed. Interested to see how reliable they are, but definitely don’t want to be a Smokey Joe 😮 Very enjoyable video. 🚐👍🏻💙 Trev
So far so good with the new one Trev but time will tell on how reliable it is. The first one ran into issues quite quickly so fingers crossed. I agree with you about our industry. How I wish we could bring it all back.
I just bought the DJ I pocket 3 too. It’s really good
Very relaxed video would you believe it we went to wales and visited the big pit coal mine as well. They are the only two museum mines in the UK so we have been told. That pulled pork chips and coleslaw looked lovely. Glad you got the heater fixed. Stay safe guys keep on trucking see you again soon
We’ve not been to the Big Pit museum. Will have to go there one day 🙂👍
Hello you two, very interesting story. We had the same in Limburg in those days. Day 27 for you Guys, mine first day and arrived on the coast of Belgium.
See you next time 👍.
You two are always triggering memories for me ,,,,,the picture of your dinner in the pot reminded me that on one of our first camping trips with the boys I made a very similar meal except I used hamburger and added snowpeas and celery, I served it over rice and our youngest (then about 6) loved it , I loved the easy prep and he loved the taste . A couple months later ,at home after a rather hectic week I slumped down into a chair and told all I had no idea what was for supper as I was exhausted . Toby chimed in and suggested I make that ""lazy little meat"",,,I hadn't a clue what he was talking about , so on he went on about the camping meal i had made when I was LAZY and that it had that LITTLE MEAT in it.....and that affectionately became the moniker for this much loved meal . It is still a go to meal but not as frequently so thanks for sharing and triggering a funny memory ! Stay safe !!
@@LifeistooshortCK He's well blessed but could always use some extra ! Toby was struck by a car at 12 , many broken widgets and a traumatic brain injury , then at 20 his first ever ride on a dirt bike landed him in hospital again with multiple life threatening injuries including another traumatic brain injury bleed that left him learning to walk , talk and feed himself again ,,,,during the monitoring of this they found he had a congenital heart defect for which he had heart surgery ,,,,miraculously through faith , prayer and many blessings he has made a complete recovery ,,,, works full time , drives a hot red standard Mustang and still loves Lazy Little Meat.....and I'm a thankful mom ! Loved the mining tour my sort of thing shame couldn’t film but understandable to be honest. Sad with all industry like that going as it was good honest hard work
Jane loves the knife angel as I think it was made for the ironworks near Oswestry
Ooh, I had bookmarked the coal mining museum as a maybe to visit, but didn't go in the end. I spotted the wheelchairs in the back of the shot when you went into the underground bit. Were they for people with electric chairs to transfer into for underground or was that bit not really wheelchair accessible. I'd assume not but curious about those wheelchairs they had. 😄
Looks like the rest of it'd be well worth a visit another time though, thank you for sharing!
They do allow wheelchair users to go on the underground tour which is accessed via a cage lift. There is information on their website or you can give them a ring if you have any questions. Well worth a visit 🙂👍
So last episode you were driving around fairly near where I live (Holmfirth), and this one you started driving around where I was born - (Stockport), before staying a couple of miles from my house in Penistone. 😂 There are much better places to stay round here than that scruffy alleyway though!
One day we'll bump into each other I hope.
Say hello if you see us. We really don’t mind where we stop to sleep 😁👍
I'm guessing you didn't enjoy your sausage cobs, then 😄
It's interesting to hear you've had a boating holiday on the Caledonian canal. It would be great to see you holidaying on a narrowboat. No quick getaways, though 😉 x
I watched this in a campsite in France, and my brain didn’t cope very well, to begin with, seeing you driving on the wrong side of the road!

Great spots and interesting activities. Loved the Coal Mining Museum, though cannot but feel sad at what happened in the mid 1980s strike driven by Margaret Thatchers Govt. Used to have a friend who was a policeman based at Portman Square in London, that was despised by many and his friends until he left the force later. The emotive feelings still there are visible in so many places (like the highland clearances, some still have bitter reactions & memories today). Looked like there was a lot of still useable and expensive gear at the Museum. Our current govt are looking to reopen some coal mines and also create new ones, as we currently import coal from Indonesia, that seems false economy when you have unlimited coal at home!! Great you have a new heater, fingers crossed it works!! Great and tasty catering options, you have shown this week. A 'Flight List' sounds a great idea, perhaps also a 'Crew List' for catering and any other reminders (chalk board or clipboard maybe)? Take care & stay safe. Kia Ora from New Zealand. 💜💜
Hi carol and ken my son and his wife have lived on a narrow boat for eight years now , they work as artists and have a new UA-cam channel called art in the corridor, i think you'd be great on the canals 😊😊😊
Xx
I'm wondering how you like the maneuverability of the Big Puppy compared to Little Red. Specifically, adjustments you are having to make because of the size of it. Are you having to avoid small roads and use more camper parks? I'd love to see how you do in Ireland. What about a travel expense comparison? I'm trying to make the big vs small van decision myself and would love to hear your pro/con opinions. Thanks!
It’s a lot more expensive on fuel which is no surprise. It took me about 6 weeks to feel as comfortable driving it as I did Little Red. Yes we are back to some rather narrow roads as you will see in the series after next. Width is a real consideration. Little red you never had to think about anything. With Snoopy the first thing we have to check for is height barriers. So far though (in 10 weeks) that has hardly been an issue at all. Fuel is the biggest expense for us as wild camping is mostly free. I practice reversing every chance I get and that is serving me well. Carol still does not like driving it other than on major roads but is slowly doing more.
@@LifeistooshortCK I really appreciate your response. Y'all are the best! Thank You SO Much!
