He was definitely real, and his depiction as a towering muscle bound death machine is fairly accurate as well.
He was areal, and he legit was the one who led the vanguard at Patay and crushed the English.
la Hire is real, maybe the only one in that campaign who isn't real is Guy Josselyne, the beloving follower of Joan who serves as narrator and leader of the french forces in the last mission

The best thing about the Joan of Arc Campaign map is that Swizerland has been labled "Burgundy".
I remember seeing a picture from an American news cast where they had labeled Austria as Switzerland. Pretty funny.
Western Switzerland was a part of burgundy at the time.
@@scipioafricanus6417 wasn't that Savoy? Which was an imperial and not a French fief. But I'm no expert on the period. - in any case it's clearly a modern map with just the closest thing being labled burgundy. The map even lacks gascony etc, which would have been relevant.

It is pitiful how Spirit of the Law didn't see how bad are the maps in that campaign. You got eyes to compare with real maps? To not put any fortification on the bridge of Orleans while it was probably the best fortified bridge in entire history and because of that, the key of France (French historical article on Wikipedia about that bridge (doesn't exist in English: strange) fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pont_des_Tourelles ) but puting anyway ships to cross the river when just close to them the bridge is completely clear and empty: strange again!), and not understand that the cities cleaned on Loire were cities blocking the paths of ships to go in Orleans (so it was just part of the siege, taken for that and just before the first attack of the English, and it were again fortified cities made by the French blocking the bridges, not f shallows with brit forts away blocking nothing, I was born and live few km from that localities, in Angers, and i feel totally insulted by that stupidities and erasing of French defensive architectural work which were the best in the world in medieval time (never heard about the "châteaux de la Loire" ? ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ch%C3%A2teaux_of_the_Loire_Valley ) And he pretends to be Historian teacher here?)) like the reinforcement of Falstolf intercepted few km before to reach his goal, which was to take back Orleans, is f stupidity. And know that according to France, only 3 knights falled at Patay that day, not 100 (you should see French sources instead brit bad faith propaganda still current, when the british governement claims recently that the ring of Joan was English national heritage (shows how bad faith they are, if they don't believe of Joan magic, why ask for that which is obviously outrageously arrogant as Joan ennemies and filthy murderers only?). wikipedia article in French of the battle of Patay: fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bataille_de_Patay No Burgundians also in Orleans siege (why a French pretender of the throne would have starve french people 6 months? Again a bad faith brit spiting on God and France, like at that time. It will avail Spirit of the law nothing good! There are a lot of interesting comments to make here...
One point I'd suggest relates to how we categorise different groups at the time. For instance, SotL talks about both kingdoms being 'Catholic', and also talks about 'England' and 'France' as being the factions at war. However, those names are all retroactive. Spirit correctly notes that Joan didn't use a nationalistic symbol: she used a symbol of God. There's been a modern move, going back a century or more, to interpret Joan as a French patriot, but the idea of French patriotism as such would be alien to her.
Further, talking about her enemies as just 'England' is a bit misleading: half of France had been allegiant to the 'English' throne for decades or more. There's a sense in which the Hundred Years' War is a French civil war in which one side merely happened to control England as well. However, even that way of putting it is a bit misleading: in the 14th and 15th centuries, politics was not about territory, homeland, or nation - it was about people. That is, the argument was not about whether England should conquer France - it was about whether the rightful king of France is Charles VII Valois or Henry II Lancaster (better known as Henry VI in England). Joan would have been fighting for the Valois claim and for God - not for an abstract notion of France.
The 'English' part of France at the time, then, should not necessarily be viewed as under occupation, but rather as French people who had a different view about who the king of France was. Juliet Barker's book 'Conquest: The English Kingdom of France' tries to thread this needle pretty well. Nationalistic sentiments do start to arise near to the end of the Hundred Years' War and Joan plays a role in the birth of a notion of specifically French national identity, but we shouldn't read that too far back.
Similarly, I always feel that capital-C Catholicism is a misleading term when applied to the Middle Ages. When we hear 'Catholic' today we think of the Roman Catholic Church in its modern form, as distinct from Protestants. But in the 15th century, the Reformation had not happened yet. The medieval church had not split into Catholics and Protestants yet. Speaking of medieval Christians as 'Catholics' means putting them on one side of a dispute that hadn't happened yet. Joan and priests of her day would have described themselves as 'catholic', and as good Christian men and women, but the Catholic/Protestant division was alien to them. Frankly we don't know which sides any of them might have taken in the Reformation, had they lived that long.
Now a few more points...
One element that always interested me, in contrast to this campaign and most depictions of Joan, is that according to Joan herself at her trial, she never killed anyone. She was not above occasionally beating someone with the flat of her sword, but as Spirit said, her primary role in combat was to run around waving a banner - more like a regimental mascot than a soldier. It always feels a bit wrong when the game unit depicts Joan with a sword fighting and killing enemy units: something that by her own admission she never did! This might have been for the best - a seventeen year old girl with minimal military training, however courageous, is unlikely to have stacked up that well against veteran soldiers.
Spirit emphasised Joan's aggressive approach, and I think that's important. Kelly DeVries' 'Joan of Arc: A Military Leader' analyses Joan as a general or captain, and he suggests that Joan's major strength was that she was, for lack of a better term, a fanatic. French commanders in the 1410s and 20s had adopted an overly careful, methodical approach to warfare, and could be quite casualty-averse - perhaps an understandable move after they were slaughtered at Agincourt! However, Joan believed that God was on her side and therefore she could not lose - so her policy was to always attack, even in the teeth of seemingly-impossible odds. This repeatedly allowed her troops to surprise enemy commanders. Patay is a good example - while Joan herself wasn't there, a rapid, fierce attack allowed a small French force to overwhelm the English, whereas if the French had been more cautious and allowed the English to entrench, the battle might have gone the other way.
It's worth also thinking a bit more about the politics here. Why would Charles' advisors, or even Charles himself, be opposed to Joan? The role of Burgundy is very important. In brief, before Joan came along, the Valois strategy was diplomatic: the aim was to flip Burgundy to the Valois side through negotiation and then hit the English with a combined force. From the perspective of the most prominent advocates of this strategy, notably Georges de la Tremoille, Joan was a dangerous wild card. When you're engaging in extremely delicate negotiations to try to woo a recalcitrant third faction, the last thing you need is this fanatic, aggressive, and honestly almost psycho young woman hurling French troops into every single obstacle in her way. So after the Siege of Orleans and Charles' coronation, Tremoille tried very hard to stop Joan from leading an army against Paris, deep within the English Kingdom of France.
People like Tremoille often end up the villains when we retell the story of Joan of Arc. Some of that is reasonable - he certainly doesn't seem to have liked her very much, and he fell from favour after some dodgy military shenanigans in the early 1430s - but in hindsight the diplomatic strategy was not fruitless. Joan makes for a better story, but Charles VII successfully flipped Burgundy to his side at the Congress of Arras in 1435, and there's a decent argument to be made that it was this victory, not any of Joan's, that turned the tide and sealed the French victory in the Hundred Years' War.
Anyway, nitpicking and writing small essays aside, thank you for the fun video! I enjoyed it and look forward to part 2. :)

I like this. People love to try and back-project and misappropriate history, but things were very different back then and even talking about "the french people" as we understand it today would be a stretch, all having distinct regional languages and cultures that hadn't yet been crushed by Napoleon to try and create a common "french" identity.
Heh, sorry, I was really into Joan of Arc for a few years and read a lot.
I think the main takeaway here is that AoE2's Joan of Arc campaign is very much about patriotism, complete with the narrator at the end talking about his commitment to France. This is, for what it's worth, not an unreasonable take: in 1337, you wouldn't find much sense of 'French' or 'English' identity, but by 1453 you would. The Hundred Years' War was one of the causes of the rift between those nations.
Notably, for instance, it's in the 15th century that English becomes the dominant noble language in England. Before that, English nobility would mostly be speaking French, or hybrid dialects called Anglo-French or Anglo-Norman. But the Pleading Act of 1362 established that law courts would conduct their business in English, and in the 1430s you find the Chancery Standard developing: that is, the use of English in legal documents, rather than French or Latin.
If you're like me, you might have done Geoffrey Chaucer in high school English. He was writing in the late 14th century as well, in the middle of the Hundred Years' War, and he also played a significant role in spreading the idea that English could be a language of literature. It's fair to say that this was also related to the Hundred Years' War, the ongoing struggle with France, and the development of distinct French and English identities.
So, at any rate - in Joan's life in the 1420s, there *was* the growth of a notion of France or Frenchness, as opposed to Englishness. Joan herself sometimes put it in terms of expelling the English. (e.g. at her trial she was asked if God hates the English, and she replied "Of the love or hatred God has for the English, I know nothing, but I do know that they will all be thrown out of France, except those who die there.")
Even so, a general or universal French identity took much longer to develop, and I think it's important to bear in mind that the Hundred Years' War was primarily a dynastic struggle. The issue at hand was who had a rightful claim to the throne of France, and, well, it gets very complicated and the English claim isn't *that* bad. It's probably best to think of the Hundred Years' War as a stage in the development of distinct French and English national identities.
tl;dr AoE2 portrays a rise in French pride and nationalism and attributes this to Joan of Arc, this is reasonable in some ways, but also a simplification. It makes for a good campaign, though!

During the Battle of Patay, there was a brief discussion among cavalry vanguard commanders La Hire, Ambroise de Loré, Jean Poton de Xaintrailles, Arthur de Richemont, to wait for the rest of the forces to catch up, a common procedure,
or charge in the face of overwhelming enemy numbers, no doubt influenced by Jeanne's fierce battle tactics they decided to charge which allowed the famous Frankish cavalry charge to work as intended resulting in what is known as the "Reverse Agincourt" - Battle of Patay. The enemy lost most of the longbow troops which would not be replaced for a significant period due to long time it takes to learn its use. Besides that the French would debut field artillery at Battle of Castillon luring the English into its fire for devastating effect finally crushing English ambitions on the Continent. They would be so traumatized by this defeat they would not dare attack France one-one-one again.

The mission select map is quite awful. Modern borders (while some of eastern modern France was in the HRE), with Burgundy being portrayed as Switzerland and England holding nothing in France.

When i played the Loire mission, i used my monks to convert Fastolf just after he taunted the french and used him to fight the english.
I like to imagine it as a sort of alternative history scenario in which he was convinced of the Maid's mission and joined the french.

I am Spanish, and Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar is my favourite historic character. His life as it is foretold was shrouded with feats and myth. I recommend you to read "Cantar de Mio Cid". Though its reading could be difficult, it is worthful.
The AoE wiki states that he was kinda overplayed in most media. While I dont think he was as moral as Joan of Arc, he still might've been close enough for his rep. Hoping to see any of my favorite history channels cover him properly.

When I was a kid, I played through the Age of Empires campaigns and learned about many of the events depicted before even entering Elementary School. I can't thank my dad enough for introducing the game to me. Now as an adult, I am playing through the campaigns and feeling a completely refreshed urge to learn history. After beating a campaign, its fascinating fleshing out the true events through reading and research. It makes me wish more games like this exist.

side note, if you do some scouting before moving any troops (in 'the Maid of Orleans'), you can actually stumble over some unclaimed transports and dock. even more interesting is that upon discovering them, your instantly given the 'careening' tech, thus doubling your troop space. so its not forgotten, just hidden as an easter egg, of sorts.

The Wallace campaign is one of the most inaccurate, though that’s more understandable due to it being a series of tutorial missions. Most notably, though, the Scots lost the Battle of Falkirk.
